QUICK REFERENCE
This sec tion serves a s a referenc e guide, identifying the key opera tiona l a spec ts of using the
Regiona l BG AN system, the Controls and Indicators on the Sa tellite IP Modem a nd the func tions
of the Launch Pad softwa re.
G
LOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM OPERATION
Your Sa tellite IP Modem c onta ins a n integra ted G loba l Positioning System (G PS) rec eiver tha t is
used to provide loc a tion informa tion to the Regiona l BG AN system. G PS loc a tion informa tion is
required for system a c c ess a nd the rec eption of a new G PS loc a tion is a ttempted a utoma tic a lly
every time the Sa tellite IP Modem is powered on.
For optimum G PS signa l rec eption, ma ke sure the Sa tellite IP Modem is positioned in a roughly
horizonta l pla c ement with the lid c losed. Sinc e G PS rec eivers must “see” a la rge pa rt of the sky
without obstruc tions from buildings, mounta ins or trees, it ma y be nec essa ry to ta ke your Sa tellite
IP Modem out to a c lea r spa c e to obta in a new G PS loc a tion. It ma y be possible to obta in a
new G PS loc a tion in a less fa voura ble c irc umsta nc e, but the time to c ompletion ma y be longer.
Onc e upda ted, the Sa tellite IP Modem remembers your loc a tion so the unit c a n be reloc a ted to
a more c onvenient working a rea , suc h a s inside a building by a window fa c ing towa rd the
sa tellite.
Onc e you ha ve esta blished a session on the Regiona l BG AN system you will not need a nother
G PS loc a tion while you rema in c onnec ted in the “Alwa ys On” c ondition. This is c onvenient if you
intend to opera te from one loc a tion for a n extended period of time sinc e there is no need to
move the Sa tellite IP Modem to refresh the G PS rec eiver. Also, your stored G PS loc a tion rema ins
good for a period of time (c onsult with your servic e provider for this informa tion) even if you
power down a nd move a short dista nc e between sessions. When you believe this is the c a se,
simply skip the G PS loc a tion step a nd c omplete the Regiona l BG AN sa tellite pointing opera tion
prior to going direc tly onto the network. Be sure to c a refully point your unit a fter every time it is
moved.
STORED GPS LOCATION
The most rec ent G PS loc a tion is stored in the Sa tellite IP Modem even when powered down.
Upon power up, if this stored G PS loc a tion is a va ila ble the displa y indic a tes “Using Stored
Loc a tion.” Even so, the Sa tellite IP Modem will a ttempt to upda te this G PS loc a tion sinc e the
Regiona l BG AN system will only a llow a c c ess if your G PS loc a tion is not too old. If the Sa tellite IP
Modem is a ble to upda te the G PS loc a tion, the sta tus c ha nges from “Stored” to “Va lid.” G PS
loc a tion is shown a s “Inva lid” only under spec ia l c irc umsta nc es when the stored informa tion ha s
been era sed. In a ny c a se, you ma y wish to a ttempt network a c c ess to see if servic e will be
gra nted.

ANTENNA POINTING
Esta blishing a new c onnec tion requires the c a reful orienta tion of the Sa tellite IP Modem towa rds
the Regiona l BG AN Sa tellite. The more prec ise this a lignment, the fa ster your da ta will be a ble to
tra vel over the network. To ensure prec ise a lignment, the pointing opera tion is divided into a
rough pointing opera tion followed by a fine pointing opera tion.
To a ssist in rough Sa tellite IP Modem orienta tion, the stored G PS loc a tion is used to obta in your
loc a tion rela tive to the sa tellite. Using this geogra phic loc a tion da ta , direc tion a nd eleva tion
a ngle informa tion is supplied to you on your c omputer’s displa y. You c a n use this informa tion in
c onjunc tion with the Sa tellite IP Modem’s c ompa ss a nd eleva tion a ngle sc a le to obta in a n initia l
orienta tion towa rds the sa tellite.
Onc e you ha ve done this, sta tion yourself with your Sa tellite IP Modem’s “lid” (the a ntenna )
opened a wa y from you (like the displa y sc reen of a la ptop c omputer) a nd look out a nd over it
to ensure tha t nothing but open sky is between the Modem’s lid a nd the Regiona l BG AN
Sa tellite. If the view is bloc ked by trees, mounta ins, buildings or simila r objec ts then you must
reloc a te the Sa tellite IP Modem. This ma nipula tion is c a lled the Rough
Pointing proc edure.
Do not stand in front of the Antenna
The Sa tellite IP Modem emits ra dio frequenc y energy when in
the tra nsmit mode. To a void injury, do not pla c e hea d or
other body pa rts in front of the a ntenna when system is
opera tiona l.
Onc e you ha ve c ompleted rough pointing, the c onnec tion c a n be “tuned” using the fine
pointing proc edure. The tuning c onsists of sma ll c ha nges in direc tion (rota tion of the modem)
a nd sma ll c ha nges in eleva tion a ngle (sma ll up a nd down movement of the modem’s lid).
Signa l meters a re loc a ted on the modem a nd c omputer displa y; you c a n use either one to
ma ximize your signa l strength. Finding the ma ximum for both the direc tion a nd eleva tion a ngle
settings ensures the best performa nc e from your modem.

strength) to green (best signa l strength) a s the a ntenna is ma nipula ted to get the optimum
signa l.
BATTERY LIGHT
The Ba ttery Light is off when the Sa tellite IP Modem is powered down.
Normal Operational Mode: If the Ba ttery Light is flashing amber, the Sa tellite IP Modem is

c onnec ted to AC ma ins power a nd the ba ttery is c ha rging. If the Light is green, the Modem is
c onnec ted to AC ma ins power a nd the ba ttery is fully c ha rged. If the Light is flashing red, the
ba ttery is low a nd is not c ha rging.
Pointing Mode: In this mode, the Ba ttery Light is lit a long with the interfa c e lights to be used a s a
