Read the instructions carefully. Be familiar with the
controls and proper use of the unit.
Do not operate this unit when tired, ill, or under the
influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
Children and teens under the age of 15 must not
use the unit, except for teens guided by an adult.
Inspect the unit before use. Replace damaged parts.
Check for fuel leaks. Make sure all fasteners are in
place and secure. Replace cutting head parts that are
cracked, chipped, or damaged in any way. Make sure
the cutting head is properly installed and securely
fastened. Be sure the cutting head guard is properly
attached, and positioned as recommended. Failure to
do so can result in personal injury to the operator and
bystanders, as well as damage to the unit.
Use only 2.41 mm (0.095 inch) diameter original
equipment replacement line. Never use metal-
reinforced line, wire, or rope, etc. These can break
off and become a dangerous projectile.
SAFETY WARNINGS FOR PETROL TRIMMERS
WARNING: Petrol (gasoline) is highly flammable,
and its vapors can explode if ignited. Take the
following precautions:
Store fuel only in containers specifically designed
and approved for the storage of such materials.
Always stop the engine and allow it to cool before
filling the fuel tank. Never remove the cap of the fuel tank,
or add fuel, when the engine is hot. Never operate the unit
without the fuel cap securely in place. Loosen the fuel tank
cap slowly to relieve any pressure in the tank.
Add fuel in a clean, well-ventilated area outdoors where there
are no sparks or flames. Slowly remove the fuel cap only
after stopping engine. Do not smoke while fueling or mixing
fuel. Wipe up any spilled fuel from the unit immediately.
Avoid creating a source of ignition for spilled fuel.
Do not start the engine until fuel vapors dissipate.
Move the unit at least 9.1 m (30 feet) from the fueling
source and site before starting the engine. Do not
smoke, keep sparks and open flames from the area
while adding fuel or operating the unit.
Be aware of risk of injury to head, hands, and feet.
Clear the area to be cut before each use. Remove
all objects such as rocks, broken glass, nails, wire,
or string which can be thrown or become entangled
in the cutting head.
WHILE OPERATING
Clear the area of children, bystanders, and pets. At
a minimum, keep all children, bystanders and pets
outside a 15 meters (50 ft.) radius; there still may be
a risk to bystanders from thrown objects.
Bystanders should be encouraged to wear eye
protection. If you are approached, stop the engine
and cutting head immediately.
Never start or run the unit inside a closed room or
building. Breathing exhaust fumes can kill. Operate this
unit only in a well-ventilated area outdoors.
Wear safety glasses or goggles and ear/hearing protection
when operating this unit. Wear a face or dust mask if the
operation is dusty. Long sleeve shirts are recommended.

Wear heavy, long pants, boots and gloves. Do not
wear loose clothing, jewelry, short pants, sandals or
go barefoot. Secure hair above shoulder level.
The cutting guard must always be in place while operating
the unit as a trimmer. Do not operate unit without both
trimming lines extended, and the proper line installed. Do
not extend the trimming line beyond the length of the guard.
This unit has a clutch. The cutting head remains
stationary when the engine is idling. If it does not, have
the unit adjusted by an authorized service technician.
Always use the shoulder harness when using the
brush blade accessory.
Keep the handle between the operator and cutting
head or cutting blade at all times.
NEVER cut with the cutting blade located over 76
cm (30 in.) or more above the ground level.
Kick back may occur when the spinning brush blade
contacts an object that it does not immediately cut. Kick
back can be violent enough to cause the unit and/or
operator to be propelled in any direction, and possibly lose
control of the unit. Kick back can occur without warning if
the blade snags, stalls or binds. This is more likely to occur
in areas where it is difficult to see the material being cut.
Adjust the J-Handle to your size to provide the best grip.
Be sure the cutting head is not in contact with
anything before starting the unit.
For operation with the cutting blade, do not cut
anything thicker than 12.7mm (1/2-in.) or a violent
kick back could occur.
Before each use, check that the cutting head is in good
condition and correctly installed, that the trigger returns
automatically to the idle position.
Do not attempt to touch or stop the cutting blade
when it is rotating.
A coasting cutting blade can cause injury while it
continues to spin after the engine is stopped or the
throttle trigger is released. Maintain proper control
until the blade has completely stopped rotating.
Use the unit only in daylight or good artificial light.
Avoid accidental starting. Be in the starting position
whenever pulling the starter rope. The operator and
unit must be in a stable position while starting. See
Starting/Stopping Instructions.
Use the right tool. Only use the tool for the purpose
intended.
Do not run unit at high speed when not cutting.
I
f you strike or become entangled with a foreign object,
Do not overreach. Always keep proper footing and balance.
stop the engine immediately and check for damage. Have
any damage repaired before attempting further operations.
Do not operate with a bent, cracked, or dull cutting blade.
Discard blades that are bent, warped, cracked, or broken.
Always hold the unit with both hands when
operating. Keep a firm grip on both the front and
rear handles or grips.
Always use the shoulder harness when using this unit.
Do not sharpen the cutting blade. Sharpening the
blade can cause the blade tip to break off while in
use. This can result in severe personal injury.
Replace the cutting blade.
Stop the engine IMMEDIATELY if you feel excessive
vibration. Vibration is a sign of trouble. Inspect thoroughly
for loose nuts, bolts, or damage before continuing. Repair
or replace affected parts as necessary.
Keep hands, face, and feet at a distance from all
moving parts. Do not touch or try to stop the cutting
head when it is rotating.
Do not touch the engine or muffler. These parts get
extremely hot from operation. When turned off they
remain hot for a short time.
Do not operate the engine faster than the speed
needed to cut, trim or edge. Do not run the engine
at high speed when not cutting.
Always stop the engine when cutting is delayed or
when walking from one cutting location to another.
AFTER USE
Clean cutting blades with a household cleaner to remove
any gum build-up. Oil the blade with machine oil to
prevent rust.
Lock up and store the cutting blade in an appropriate area
to protect the blade from unauthorized use or damage.
If you strike or become entangled with a foreign
object, stop the engine immediately and check for
damage. Do not operate before repairing damage.
Do not operate the unit with loose or damaged parts.

SECTION 4: OPERATING YOUR TRIMMER
RECOMMENDED OIL TYPE
Use a high quality oil formulated for use in 2-cycle,
air-cooled engines.
Old and/or improperly mixed fuel are usually the main
reasons for the unit not running properly. Be sure to use
fresh, clean fuel and follow the instructions carefully for
the proper fuel/oil mixture.
RECOMMENDED FUEL TYPE
NOTE: Alcohol-blended fuel absorbs moisture (water).
As little as 1% moisture in the fuel can cause
fuel and oil to separate and form acids when
stored. If alcohol - blended fuel must be used,
use fresh fuel (less than 60 days old), and mix
according to the mixing instructions.
Always use clean, fresh, unleaded petrol (gasoline) that
is less than 60 days old.
WARNING: Petrol (gasoline) is extremely
flammable and its vapors can explode if they
are ignited. Always stop the engine and allow
it to cool before filling the fuel tank. Do not
smoke while filling the tank. Keep sparks and
open flames away from the area.
DEFINITION OF BLENDED FUELS
Today's fuels are often a blend of petrol (gasoline) and
one or more oxygenates such as ethanol, methanol or
MTBE (ether).
WARNING: Remove fuel cap slowly to avoid
injury from fuel spray.
USE OF BLENDED FUELS
If you choose to use a blended fuel or its use is
unavoidable, the following precautions are
recommended:
1. Always use the fresh fuel mix explained in your
operator's manual.
DANGER: Combustible mixture contains
petroleum distillate. Store away from heat or
open flame. Harmful or fatal if swallowed. If
swallowed, do not induce vomiting, call a
physician immediately. Avoid prolong contact
with skin. Wash thoroughly after handling.
2. Use the fuel additive STA-BIL® or an equivalent.
3. Always agitate the fuel mix before fueling the unit.
4. Drain the tank and run the engine dry before storing
the unit.
OIL AND FUEL MIXING INSTRUCTIONS
USE OF FUEL ADDITIVES
Thoroughly mix 3.8 liters of unleaded petrol (gasoline)
with 120 ml. of 2 cycle engine oil in a separate fuel can,
32:1. Do not mix them directly in the engine fuel tank.
The use of fuel additive, such as STA-BIL® Fuel
Stabilizer or an equivalent, will inhibit corrosion and
minimize the formation of gum deposits. Add 23 ml. (0.8
oz.) per gallon of fuel per instructions on container.
NEVER add fuel additives directly to the unit's fuel tank.
Using a fuel additive can keep fuel fresh for up to six (6)
months.
+
CAUTION: For proper engine operation and
maximum reliability, pay strict attention to the
oil and fuel mixing instructions on the
UNLEADED GAS
2 CYCLE OIL
2-cycle oil container. Use a 25:1 fuel/oil ratio.

Before operating the unit, stand in the operating position,
Figure 19. Check for the following:
while the unit is running.
The operator is wearing eye protection and proper
clothing
CAUTION: Do not remove or alter the line
cutting blade assembly. Excessive line length
will make the unit overheat. This may lead to
serious personal injury or damage to the unit.
With a slightly-bent right arm, the operator’s hand is
holding the shaft grip
The operator’s left arm is straight, his hand holding
the J-handle
Some line breakage will occur from:
Entanglement with foreign matter
Normal line fatigue
Attempting to cut thick, stalky weeds
Forcing the line into objects such as walls or fence
posts
The unit is at waist level
The cutting attachment is parallel to the ground and
easily contacts the grass without the need to bend
over
TIPS FOR BEST TRIMMING RESULTS
Keep the cutting head parallel to the ground.
Do not force the cutting head. Allow the tip of the
line to do the cutting, especially along walls. Cutting
with more than the tip will reduce cutting
efficiency and may overload the engine.
Cut grass over 200 mm (8 inches) by working from
top to bottom in small increments to avoid
premature line wear or engine drag.
Cut from left to right whenever possible. Cutting to
the right improves the unit's cutting efficiency.
Clippings are thrown away from the operator.
Slowly move the trimmer into and out of the cutting
area at the desired height. Move either in a forward-
backward or side-to-side motion. Cutting shorter
lengths produces the best results.
FIGURE 19
ADJUSTING TRIMMING LINE LENGTH
Trim only when grass and weeds are dry.
The life of your cutting line is dependent upon:
The Bump Head™ cutting head allows you to release
trimming line without stopping the engine. To release
more line, lightly tap the cutting head on the ground
while operating the trimmer at high speed, Figure 20.
Following the previous trimming techniques
What vegetation is being cut
Where it’s being cut
NOTE: Always keep the trimming line fully extended.
Line release becomes more difficult as cutting
line becomes shorter.
FIGURE 21
For example, the line will wear faster when trimming against
a foundation wall as opposed to trimming around a tree.
FIGURE 20
Each time the head is bumped, about 25.4 mm (1 inch) of
trimming line releases. A blade in the cutting head guard will
cut the line to the proper length if excess line is released.
DECORATIVE TRIMMING
Decorative trimming is accomplished by removing all
vegetation around trees, posts, fences, etc.
Rotate the whole unit so that the cutting head is at a
30° angle to the ground, Figure 10.

USING THE CUTTING BLADE
WARNING: The blade continues to spin after
the engine is turned off. The coasting blade
can seriously cut you if accidentally touched.
WARNING: Always wear eye, hearing, foot,
body protection and the strap to reduce the
risk of injury when operating this unit.
Swing the unit in the same direction as the blade
spins, which increases the cutting action.
Move forward to the next area to be cut after the
return swing and plant feet again.
The cutting blade is designed with a second cutting
edge, which can be used by removing the blade,
turning it upside down, and reinstalling it.
WARNING: Do not use the cutting blade for
edging or as an edger, severe personal injury
to yourself or others can occur.
Before operating the unit with the cutting blade stand in
the operating position, Figure 22. Refer to Holding the
Trimmer.
WARNING: Do not sharpen the cutting blade.
Sharpening the blade can cause the blade tip
to break off while in use. This can result in
severe personal injury to yourself or others.
Replace the blade.
Cutting Blade Operating Tips:
To establish a rhythmic cutting procedure:
Plant feet firmly, comfortably apart.
Bring the engine to full throttle before entering the
material to be cut. The blade has maximum cutting
power at full throttle and is less likely to bind, stall,
or cause blade thrust, which can result in serious
personal injury to the operator or others.
To reduce the chance of material wrapping
around the blade, follow these steps:
Cut at full throttle.
Swing the unit into material to be cut from your right
to your left, Figure 23.
Avoid the material just cut as you make the return
swing.
FIGURE 23
WARNING: Do not clear away cut material
with the engine running or blade turning. To
avoid serious personal injury, turn off engine.
Allow the blade to stop before removing
materials wrapped around the blade shaft.
FIGURE 22
WARNING: Kick back may occur when the
spinning blade contacts an object that it does
not immediately cut. Kick back can be violent
enough to cause the unit and/or operator to be
propelled in any direction, and possibly lose
control of the unit. Kick back can occur without
warning if the blade snags, stalls, or binds.
This is more likely to occur in areas where it is
difficult to see the material being cut.
Cut while swinging the upper part of your body from
right to left.
Always release the throttle trigger and allow the
engine to return to idle speed when not cutting.
When done always unsnap unit from harness before
taking harness off.

SECTION 5: MAINTAINING YOUR TRIMMER
NOTE: Some maintenance procedures may require
special tools or skills. If you are unsure about
these procedures take your unit to an
authorized service dealer.
NOTE: Emission control device and system repair,
maintenance or replacement may be performed
by any non-road engine repair establishment,
individual or authorized service dealer.
In order to assure peak performance of your engine,
inspection of the engine exhaust port may be necessary
after 50 hours of operation. If you notice lost RPM, poor
performance or general lack of acceleration, this service
may be required. If you feel your engine is need of this
inspection, refer service to an authorized servicing dealer, or
establishment for repair. DO NOT attempt to perform this
process yourself as engine damage may result from
contaminants involved in the cleaning process for the port.
MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
These required maintenance procedures should be

Checking the fuel mixture, cleaning the air filter, and
adjusting the idle speed should solve most engine
problems.
CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT
The idle speed of the engine is adjustable through the
air filter/muffler cover, Figure 38.
If not and:
NOTE: Careless adjustments can seriously damage
your unit. An authorized service dealer should
make carburetor adjustments.
The engine will not idle
The engine hesitates or stalls on acceleration
There is a loss of engine power
Check Fuel Mixture
Have the carburetor adjusted by an authorized service
dealer.
Old and/or improperly mixed fuel is usually the reason
for the unit not running properly. Drain and refill the tank
with fresh, properly mixed fuel prior to making any
adjustments. Refer to Oil and Fuel Information.
WARNING: When the unit is turned off make
sure the cutting head has stopped before the
unit is set down to prevent serious personal
injury.
Idle Speed Screw
REPLACING THE SPARK PLUG
Use a Champion RDJ7Y spark plug (or equivalent). The
correct air gap is 0.5 mm (0.020 in.). Remove the plug
after every 25 hours of operation and check its condition.
1. Stop the engine and allow it to cool. Grasp the plug
wire firmly and pull the cap from the spark plug.
2. Clean dirt from around the spark plug. Remove the
spark plug from the cylinder head by turning a
5/8 in. socket counterclockwise.
NOTE: Replace cracked, fouled or dirty spark plug.
3. Set the air gap at 0.5 mm (0.020 in.) using a feeler
FIGURE 38
gauge, Figure 39.
Clean Air Filter
The condition of the air filter is important to the
operation of the unit. A dirty air filter will restrict air flow
and change the air/fuel mixture. This is often mistaken
for an out-of-adjustment carburetor. Check the condition
of the air filter before adjusting the idle speed screw.
Refer to Air Filter Maintenance.
0.5 mm
(0.020 in.)
Adjusting the Idle Speed
WARNING: The cutting head will spin during
idle speed adjustments. Wear protective
clothing and observe all safety instructions to
prevent serious personal injury.
FIGURE 39
CAUTION: Do not sand blast, scrape, or clean
electrodes. Grit in the engine could damage the
cylinder.
If after checking the fuel mixture and cleaning the
air filter the engine still will not idle, adjust the idle speed
as follows.
1. Start the engine and let it run at a high idle for a
minute to warm up. See Starting/Stopping
Instructions.
4. Install a correctly gapped spark plug in the cylinder
head. Tighten by turning the 5/8 in. socket clockwise
until snug.
If using a torque wrench torque to:
12.3-13.5 Nm (110-120 in.lb.)
Do not over tighten.
2. Release the throttle trigger and let the engine idle. If
the engine stops, insert a small phillips or flat blade
screwdriver into the hole in the air filter/muffler
cover, Figure 38. Turn the idle speed screw in,
clockwise, 1/8 of a turn at a time (as needed) until
the engine idles smoothly.
3. If the engine appears to be idling too fast, turn the
idle speed screw out, counterclockwise, 1/8 of a
turn at a time (as needed) to reduce idle speed.
NOTE: If a tachometer is available, set idle speed to
RPM specifications in Specifications section.
