PRACTICES AND LAWS
Practice usual and customary safe working
precautions, for the benefit of yourself and others.
Understand and follow all safety messages. Be alert to
unsafe conditions and the possibility of minor,

engine governor settings or over-speed engine. Slow
down and turn corners slowly.
Sharp edges can cut. Moving parts can cut off fingers

When engine is running and speed control lever is
forward, holding only one steering lever will cause unit
to circle around one drive wheel.
When practical, remove gas-powered equipment from
the truck or trailer and refuel it on the ground. If this is
not possible, then refuel such equipment on a trailer
with a portable container, rather than from a gasoline
dispenser nozzle.

Operator Presence Control (988105, 106, 107,
108, 109, 113)
The operator presence control lever must be
depressed to operate the PTO.When the speed control
levers are in forward position, the parking brake is off,
or the PTO is engaged, releasing the operator
presence control lever stops the engine.
WARNING: AVOID INJURY. Read and
understand the entire Safety section before
proceeding.
CONTROLS AND FEATURES
Safety Interlock System
NOTE: Moving the speed control levers out of neutral
with the parking brake engaged will shut down the
engine. PTO must be off and parking brake must be on
to keep engine running when operator presence con-
trol is released.
DANGER: SAFETY INTERLOCK SYSTEM
FAILURE and improper operation of unit can
result in death or serious injury. ALWAYS
know the safety interlock system is operating
Operator Presence Control
(988116, 117, 120, 314)
The operator presence control levers must be
depressed to operate the PTO. When the PTO is
engaged, releasing the operator presence control
levers stops the mower blades.
The engine will only start with the PTO disengaged, the
speed control levers in neutral and the parking brake
on.

CHECK TIRE PRESSURE
To test:
Check tires for proper inflation, excessive wear or
damage before each use. The correct air pressure is
8 to 16 psi (55 to 110 kPa).
1. With engine off, set controls as listed in line A of
the table below.
CHECK HYDRAULIC FLUID LEVEL
IMPORTANT: If the system does not function properly,
do not operate the unit until repairs are made.
WARNING: HYDRAULIC FLUID UNDER
PRESSURE can penetrate skin and cause
severe burns that can result in death or
serious injury.
3. Repeat steps 1-2 for lines B-C of the table below.
4. Shut off the unit, if necessary. See Shut Off and
"To stop mowing."
ALWAYS keep body and hands away from
pin holes or nozzles which eject hydraulic
fluid under pressure. ALWAYS use paper or
cardboard and not hands to search for leaks.
5. With the engine running, set controls as listed in
lines D -G of the table below.
IMPORTANT: If the system does not function properly,
do not operate the unit until repairs are made.
KNOW that all hydraulic fluid connections
are tight and all hydraulic hoses and lines
are in good condition BEFORE applying
pressure to system.
Foreign fluid injected into skin must be
surgically removed within a few hours by a
doctor familiar with this form of injury or
gangrene may result.
Check the hydraulic fluid level with the dipstick before
each use (more often if leaks are observed). Stop the
engine before servicing any hydraulic parts.

of operation. They both should be changed every 500
hours thereafter.
MOWER BLADES
To change the filter:
Check mower blades for wear every 25 hours of
operation. Ensure blade hardware is tightened to
115-125 lbf-ft (156-169.5 N•m) of torque.
1. Place open container under tank. The container
should be able to hold at least 4 quarts of oil.
2. Remove tank from frame and allow tank to tip
rearward to allow oil to drain from system
CLEAN AIR CLEANER FOAM ELEMENT

CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT
If clutch fails to engage or disengage properly or
begins to make abnormal noise, check the air gap
adjustment at the three inspection slots.
REMOVE SINGLE LEVER PLATE (988105,
106, 107, 108, 109, 113)
Without the single lever plate, the speed control levers
can work separately to adjust tracking on uneven
terrain.
To check:
1. Stop engine, remove key and wait for all hot parts
to cool.
To remove:
2. Measure the air gap between the armature and
the rotor.
1. Remove knobs from speed control levers.
2. Remove and keep single lever plate.
3. Remove and keep nuts.
Minimum: A .005" feeler gauge should slide
between armature and rotor with slight contact.
Maximum: A .023" feeler gauge should slide
between armature and rotor with slight contact.
4. Apply Loc-Tite 495 (or equivalent) to knob
threads.
3. Repeat for each inspection slot.
To adjust:
5. Replace knobs on speed control levers.
REPLACING THE HYDRO PUMP BELT
1. If necessary, loosen gap adjustment nuts until a
.005" feeler gauge fits between armature and
rotor.
1. Place speed control levers in neutral position
(988105, 106, 107, 108, 109, 113).
2. Remove mower belt from mower clutch sheave
2. Slide a .012" feeler gauge between armature and
rotor.
3. Remove pump belt idler spring from eye bolt.
3. Tighten gap adjustment nut until there is slight
contact on feeler gauge.
WARNING: An extension spring, when
extended, stores energy and can be
dangerous. Always use tools specifically
designed for installing or removing an
extension spring. Always compress or
extend springs slowly.
4. Repeat steps 1 – 3 at each inspection slot.
NOTE: Adjust air gap as evenly as possible.
5. Start unit, engage and disengage PTO.
6. Shut off unit.
7. Recheck air gap and adjust if needed.

Jump Start
WARNING: FROZEN BATTERIES CAN
EXPLODE and result in death or serious
injury.
The unit used for jump starting should have a 12-volt
battery with at least 500 cold cranking amperes, and a
negatively grounded system.
DO NOT charge a frozen battery. Let the
battery thaw before charging.
1. Ensure battery is not frozen. If the fluid is frozen,
remove battery from unit and allow it to thaw
before charging.

2. Connect the positive (+) jumper cable to the
positive terminal of the discharged battery.
•
External Contact: Flush with water.
•
Eyes: Flush with water for at least 15 minutes
and get medical attention immediately!
3. Connect the other end of the same jumper cable
to the positive (+) terminal of the booster battery.
•
Internal Contact: Drink large quantities of water.
Follow with Milk of Magnesia, beaten egg or

DO NOT induce vomiting!
4. Connect one end of the second jumper cable to
the negative (–) terminal of the booster battery.
5. Make the final jumper cable connection to the
engine block or the furthest ground point away
from the discharged battery.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT fast charge. Charging at a
higher rate will damage or destroy battery.
IMPORTANT: ONLY use an automatic charger
designed for use with your battery. ALWAYS follow
information provided on battery and battery charger.
Contact battery and charger manufacturers for detailed
instructions.
