Preparing the KC-120ST for use
Flip the unit upside down, remove the battery
cover, and install two AAA batteries (not
supplied). Follow the polarity markings inside
the battery compartment. Replace the cover.
These batteries maintain clock operation and
settings during power outages. They do not
power the radio or the display. Yearly
replacement is recommended.
Install the CR2025 “coin” battery in the remote control.
To open the battery compartment, use a fingernail
to depress the release clip while pulling to the
right on the battery holder.
Your battery may be pre-installed. If it is pre-
installed there will be a small insulating tab
protruding from the battery compartment at the
back edge of the remote. This tab (if present)
must be removed prior to use.
Replace the battery when the remote’s operating
range deteriorates.
Antenna preparation
Unpack the AM antenna and snap it’s cylindrical end onto the base/mounting
plate. Stretch out the twisted cord and Insert the small rectangular plug at the
end into the socket located at (19) on the back of the radio. Note, this plug is
keyed and only fits one way. Orient the AM antenna for best reception of your
favorite AM station.
Unroll the FM wire antenna (20) and stretch it out. This antenna is permanently
attached to the back of the radio. Position this antenna for best reception of your
favorite FM station.
Select a location for your radio
Because the radio generates heat during operation it is necessary to provide
open space around it for proper cooling. Failure to do so can significantly reduce
the service life.
Do not place the radio near a heater or in direct sunlight. In addition, the radio
should not be placed atop electronic devices that generate heat.
In most situations the best radio reception will be had when the KC-120ST and
its antennas are near a window. This is particularly true for the “Atomic Clock”
radio receiver.
For proper remote control operation there must be an unobstructed path between
the remote and the radio face.
The KC-120ST includes an auxiliary input allowing sound from computers, TV
sets, MP3 players, portable tape players, or other device with a headphone
output to play through the KC-120ST. If this feature will be used, keep in mind
the length of the interconnect cable needed when selecting the location.
Connecting power
Connect the supplied power adapter to the jack (22) on the back of the radio.
Plug the adapter into an un-switched AC outlet. Turn on the radio and verify
operation. Use only the supplied adapter. Damage resulting from the use of
adapters supplying the wrong voltage or polarity is not covered by the warranty.

select your time zone. The Illustration to the right shows
Mountain Time Zone setting. From left to right, the blocks represent West,
Mountain, Central, and East.
Examine the upper left corner of the main display window (12). If the
radio tower icon is visible and showing 2 or 3 strength marks, the
built-in clock should synchronize itself to the government Atomic
Clock broadcast within an hour. If the time standard signal is weak,
auto-setting may take up to 24 hours. If the clock does not auto-set
after 24 hours reposition the radio for better signal strength or set the clock
manually as described below.
Note: The “Atomic Clock” receiver ONLY operates when the KC-120ST is in
standby mode. The clock will NOT set itself while the radio is playing.
The Atomic Clock receiver inside the KC-120ST picks up and decodes the U.S.
National Institute of Standards and Technology broadcast from Long Wave radio
station WWVB located near Ft. Collins Colorado. The time information in the
data stream from WWVB is controlled by several atomic clocks located at the
station’s site. These clocks are for all practical purposes the US time standard.
WWVB is not a conventional radio station, as it does not broadcast entertainment
or human understandable information. The frequency used by this station is 60
kHz, which is well below the lower end of the AM radio band. As such, it is
subject to significant interference from power lines, fluorescent lights, light
dimmers etc. Usually the signal from WWVB is strongest at night. The power
level used by the station is such that it can be received over most of the
continental US and southern Canada for at least a few hours out of each 24-hour
period.
Because the signal from WWVB must travel more than a thousand miles to the
largest population centers and is subject to propagation conditions plus
interference, we cannot guarantee that the user will always be able to find a
location where the KC-120ST will consistently set itself.
The time display will flash 12:00 until the clock automatically synchronizes with
WWVB or until it is manually set. If you notice the display flashing 12:00 after a
power failure, replace the two AAA batteries located in the compartment on the
bottom of the KC-120ST.
