1. IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS  
CAUTION: Please read all of these instructions before you operate  
your projector. Save these instructions for future  
S
reference.  
Electric energy can perform many useful functions.  
This projector has been engineered and manufactured to meet  
applicable safety standards. IMPROPER USE CAN RESULT IN  
POTENTIAL ELECTRICAL SHOCK OR FIRE HAZARDS. In order  
not to defeat the safeguards incorporated into this projector,  
observe the following basic rules for its installation, use and  
servicing.  
12. As a safety feature, this projector is equipped with  
powercord with a 3-pin grounded plug (for USA-versions  
only) or a 2-pin grounded plug (for European versions only).  
The 3-pin/2-pin grounded plug will fit only into a grounding  
type power outlet. If the plug does not fit, use an adapter  
that is properly grounded or have an electrician install a  
grounded type outlet. Do not attempt to modify this AC  
plug.  
13. For added protection of the projector during a lightning  
storm, or when it is left unattended or not in use for long  
periods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet and  
disconnect any cable systems. This will prevent damage to  
the projector due to lightning and power-line surges.  
14. Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords with too  
many products, because this can cause a fire or electric  
shock.  
15. Never push objects of any kind into the projector through  
cabinet slots as they may touch dangerous voltage points  
or short cut parts, which could result in a fire or electric  
shock.  
16. Do not attempt to service the projector yourself other than  
maintenance issues presented in chapter ADDITIONAL  
INFORMATION/Maintenance. Opening or removing covers  
may expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards.  
Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.  
1. Unplug the projector from the wall outlet before cleaning or  
lamp replacement.  
2. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Use a soft  
dry cloth to clean the projector unit. If the unit is very dirty,  
wet a cloth with neutral detergent, squeeze it tight, wipe  
the unit with it, and finish by wiping with a dry cloth.  
Do not use a chemical duster or polisher-cleaner because it  
can adversely affect the unit and peel the paint.  
3. Do not use attachments not recommended by PHILIPS, as  
they may cause hazards.  
4. Do not use the projector near water- for example, near a  
bathtub, washbowl, kitchen sink, or laundry tub, in a wet  
basement, near a swimming pool, etc. Never spill liquid  
into the projector.  
5. Do not place the projector on an unstable cart, stand, or  
table. The projector may fall, which may cause serious  
injury to a child or an adult and/or serious damage to the  
unit. Use only with a cart or stand recommended by its  
manufacturer as being suitable for use with a projector.  
6. Ceiling, wall or shelf mounting should be done with a  
mounting kit approved by the manufacturer for use with a  
projector and should follow the manufacturers instructions.  
7. Projector equipment and cart combinations should be  
moved with care. Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven  
surfaces may cause the equipment and cart combination to  
overturn.  
8. Slots and openings in the sides and bottom of the cabinet  
are provided for ventilation. To ensure reliable operation of  
the projector and to protect it from overheating, these  
openings must not be blocked or covered. These openings  
should never be covered with cloth or other material. The  
bottom opening should not be blocked by placing the  
projector on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similar surface. The  
projector should not be placed near or over a radiator or  
heating vent. The projector should not be placed in a built-  
in installation such as a bookcase unless proper ventilation  
is provided.  
17. Unplug the projector from the wall outlet and refer  
servicing to qualified service personnel under the following  
conditions:  
A. When the powercord or plug is damaged or frayed.  
B. If liquid has been spilled into the projector.  
C. If the projector has been exposed to rain or water.  
D. If the projector does not operate normally when you  
follow the operating instructions. Adjust only those  
controls that are covered by the operating instructions;  
improper adjustment of other controls may cause  
damage and will often require extensive work by a  
qualified technician to restore the projector to normal  
operation.  
E. If the projector has been dropped or the cabinet has  
been damaged.  
F. When the projector exhibits a distinct change in  
performance (this indicates a need for service).  
18. Upon completion of any service or repairs to the projector,  
ask the service technician to perform a routine safety check  
to check that the projector is in safe operating condition.  
19. When replacement parts are required, be sure the service  
technician has used replacement parts specified by the  
manufacturer that have the same characteristics as the  
original parts. Unauthorized substitutions may result in fire,  
electric shock, or other hazards.  
20. It is recommended to clean the air filter after every 100  
lamp hours. The projector may become too hot if the filter  
is not cleaned when required.  
9. The projector should be operated only from the type of  
power source indicated on the back of the projector or in  
the specifications and with the appropriate powercord. If  
you are not sure of the type of power supplied to your  
business or the right type of powercord, consult your  
projector dealer or local power company.  
10. Do not allow anything to rest on the powercord. Do not  
place the projector where the cord will be walked on.

4. PROJECTOR FEATURES  
CAUTIONS CONCERNING THE SETUP OF THE  
PROJECTOR  
For minimal servicing and to maintain high image quality,  
PHILIPS recommends that this projector be installed in an area  
TEMPERATURE MONITOR FUNCTION  
If the projector starts to overheat due to setup problems or a  
dirty air filter,TEMP.and ‘ ’ will flash in the lower-left corner  
of the picture. If the temperature continues to rise,the lamp  
free from humidity, dust and cigarettesmoke. If the projector is will turn off,the Temperature warning indicator (Temp.) on the  
used in these environments, the lens and filter will need to be  
cleaned (or the filter replaced) more often, and internal  
cleaning may become necessary. As long as the projector is  
regularly cleaned, use in these environments will not reduce  
the overall operation life of the unit. Internal cleaning should  
only be performed by a Philips Authorised LCD Projector  
Dealer or Service Centre.  
projector will flash,and after a 90-second cooling-off period the  
power will shut off. Refer to Lamp / Maintenance Indicators’  
on pages 29-31 for details.  
Note:  
The cooling fan regulates the internal temperature, and its  
performance is automatically controlled. The sound of the fan  
may change during projector operation due to changes in the  
fan speed.  
NOTES ON OPERATION  
The exhaust vent, the lamp cage cover and adjacent areas  
may be extremely hot during projector operation. To prevent  
injury, do not touch these areas until they have sufficiently  
cooled.  
LAMP MONITOR FUNCTION  
When the projector is turned on after the lamp has been used  
for 900 hours, LAMPand ‘ ’ will flash in the lower-left  
corner of the picture to advise you to replace the lamp.  
See pages 30 and 31 for lamp replacement. If the lamp has  
been used for 1,000 hours, the projector power will  
automatically turn off and the projector will enter the standby  
mode. Refer to Lamp/Maintenance Indicatorson page 29-31  
for further details.  
Allow at least 10 cm (4 inches) of space between the cooling  
fan (exhaust vent) and the nearest wall or obstruction.  
If the cooling fan becomes obstructed, a protection device  
will automatically turn off the projector lamp. This does not  
indicate a malfunction. Remove the projector powercord from  
the wall outlet and wait at least 10 minutes.

equipment equipped with a Video output socket. (PAL, NTSC,

6. SET UP  
POSITIONING THE PROJECTOR AND SCREEN  
POWER SUPPLY  
Position the projector perpendicular to the screen with all  
feet flat and level to achieve an optimal image. Move the  
projector forward or backward if the edges of the image are  
distorted.  
The projector lens should be centred in the middle of the  
screen. If the lens centre is not perpendicular to the screen,  
the image will be distorted, making viewing difficult.  
Position the screen so that it is not in direct sunlight or room  
light. Light falling directly onto the screen washes out  
colours, making viewing difficult. Close the curtains and dim  
the lights when setting up the screen in a sunny or bright  
room.  
A polarising screen cannot be used with this projector.  
Place the projector at the required distance from the screen  
according to the desired picture size (see the table below).  
Optional wide and telephoto lenses from Philips are available  
for specialised application. Please see your local Philips  
Authorised LCD Projector Dealer for details on the optional  
lenses.  
1. Insert the powercord into the projectors AC socket and  
connect it to the wall socket.  
Note:  
The Power indicator lights up red, the projector is now in the  
Power/Standby mode.  
2. Remove the lens cap.  
3. Press Power On.  
The power indicator lights up green and the flashing green  
Lamp indicator shows that the lamp is warming up. Wait  
until the indicator stops flashing before operating the  
projector. The image shown is the Philips start-up screen  
(default setting).  
If the power is turned off and then immediately turned on  
again, it may take a short while before the lamp turns on.  
After the projector is unpacked and turned on for the first  
time, a slight odour may be emitted from the exhaust vent.  
This odour will soon disappear with use.

LENS ADJUSTMENT  
Digital Shift (16:9 mode)  
When a WIDE or NORMAL (WIDE) image is projected, this  
function can be used to shift the image up or down.  
Focus, Zoom, Digital Keystone correction and  
Digital Image Shift (see Digital Shift)  
1. Press Lens to select mode.  
Each time Lens is pressed, the screen changes in the  
following order.  
1. Press Lens to select DIGITAL SHIFT.  
2. Press OK to display test pattern.

CONNECTING TO A COMPUTER  
General  
The data input (Data 1 and 2) is suitable for both Apple Macintosh computers (Power Book and Power Mac) as well as for IBM  
compatible PCs.  
The data output of IBM compatible PCs can be connected directly to the projector using standard computer VGA cable.  
Apple Macintosh computers may need a conversion plug (optional) added to the standard computer VGA cable.  
The figures in brackets (1) correspond to the figures in the diagram on page 11, the characters in brackets (A) correspond to the  
characters in fig. 3 on page 4.  
Caution: Always switch off the projector and computer before making any connections!  
After making all connections, turn the projector on first. The computer should always be turned on last.

1. To use the Standard 15-pin connector, slide the 15 pin/BNC  
switch (M) on the rear terminals to the 15 pin position.  
2. Connect one end of the supplied computer cable (1) to the  
Computer-RGB Input Data 1 (A) or 2 port on the projector.  
3. Connect the other end to the Monitor output port on the  
computer. Secure the connectors by tightening the thumb  
screws.  
4. To use the built-in audio system, connect one end of the  
supplied computer audio cable (3) to the Audio 1 (B) or 2  
terminal on the projector.  
When connecting this projector to a computer, select  
Computer-RGBfor Signal Typeon the GUI Picturemenu.

1. To use the 5 BNC connectors, slide the 15 pin/BNC switch (M)

3. Connect the R (Pr), G/G sync (Y), B (Pb), HD (C sync) and VD  
cables to the correct input terminals on the projector and an  
RGB switcher (optional) connected to the computer, or  
connect a 5 BNC cable (optional) directly from the input  
terminals on the projector to the computer.  
4. To use the built-in audio system, connect one end of the  
supplied computer audio cable (3) to the Audio Input 1 terminal  
(B) on the projector.  
5. Connect the other end to the Audio output terminal on the  
computer.  
Notes:  
A Macintosh adapter may be required for use with some  
Macintosh computers. Contact your nearest Philips Authorised  
LCD Projector Dealer or Service Centre.  
Audio Input 1 accepts Data 1 port input, Audio Input 2 accepts  
Data 2 port input.  
A 3.5 mm minijack to RCA audio cable adapter may be  
necessary.  
When connecting the projector to a compatible computer other

Plug and Playfunction (when connecting to a 15 pin  
terminal)  
This projector is compatible with VESA-standard DDC 1/DDC 2B.  
The projector and a VESA DDC compatible computer will  
communicate their setting requirements, allowing for quick and  
easy setup.  
Connecting computers other than the recommended types may  
result in damage to the projector, the computer, or both.  
Before using the Plug and Playfunction, be sure to turn on the  
projector first and the connected computer last.  
The DDC, Plug and Play function of this projector operates only  
when used in conjunction with a VESA DDC compatible  
computer.

1.Connect the yellow RCA connector (K) to the corresponding  
yellow Video Input terminal on the projector and the Video  
output terminal on the video source.  
2.To use the built-in audio system, connect the red and white

2. Plug the video/audio connection cable (2) supplied into both  
the adapter and the Video in (K) and Audio in(L/R) sockets  
(L) of the projector.  
When connecting the projector to a DVD player or a DTV  
decoder equipped with Component video outputs, select  
Componentfor Signal Typein the GUI Picture’  
menu (see page 20).  
In case your Audiovisual equipment is equipped with a S-  
Video connector:  
The S-Video Input terminal uses a video signal system in which  
the picture is separated into a color and a luminance signal to  
realize a higher-quality image.  
Note:  
After the use of Component, when connecting to a computer  
again, select Computer/RGBfor Signal Typein the GUI  
Picturemenu (see page 20).  
1. Plug the S-Video connection cable supplied (5) into the  
Audiovisual equipment and the S-Video in socket (I) of the  
projector.  
2. Plug an audio connection cable (optional) or the video/audio  
connection cable (2) supplied into both the Audio in L/R  
sockets (L) of the projector and the Audio out L/R sockets  
of the Audiovisual equipment.  
Insert the white plug into the L socket and the red plug into  
the R socket.  
Note:  
If your video equipment does not have an S-video output  
terminal, use the Composite video output terminal.

CAUTION!  
When the RS-232C port on the projector is connected to a

components, the volume can be amplified for better sound.

Turning on/off the power  
Wait until the cooling fan stops (about 2 minutes after the  
projector has been switched off) before disconnecting the  
powercord.  
1. Make the necessary connections before proceeding.  
Connect the powercord to a wall outlet.  
The Power indicator lights up red and the projector enters  
standby mode.  
The power can be turned on again by pressing Power ON.  
When the power is turned on, the Power indicator and the  
Lamp indicator light green.  
2. Press Power ON.  
The power indicator lights up green and the flashing green  
Lamp indicator shows that the lamp is warming up. Wait  
until the indicator stops flashing before operating the  
projector.  
If the power is turned off and then immediately turned on  
again, it may take a short while before the lamp turns on.  
USING THE REMOTE CONTROL  
(fig. 2)  
The remote control has the following two functions:

Slide the remote control power ON/OFF switch into the ON  
position for switching the projector and the Remote Control

If the bottom filter cover is not securely installed, the Power

8. OPERATION  
PICTURE CONTROL  
The projectors picture is set to standard specifications at the factory. However, you can adjust the image to suit your own  
preferences by using the Data or Video ADJUST feature.  
The projector will store the last used settings for every source. So when you switch from one source to another, the settings  
of the source switched from will be stored and the settings of the source switched to will be recalled.  
When the projector is switched off and on again the settings for the selected source will be recalled again.  
Three memory modes allow you to adjust and save up to three sets of settings (see Personal Preferences).

Ordinarily, the type of input signal is detected and the correct  
resolution mode is automatically selected. However, for some

system mode is not compatible with the connected audiovisual

DATA MODE DISPLAY  
Auto Sync Adjustment  
Used to automatically adjust a computer image.  
Auto Sync adjustment can be made manually by pressing  
Auto sync (either on local keyboard and remote control), or  
automatically by setting Auto Syncto ONin the  
projectors GUI menu.  
Data display Fine Sync adjustments  
When displaying computer patterns which are very detailed  
(tiling, vertical stripes, etc.), interference may occur between  
the LCD pixels, causing flickering, vertical stripes, or contrast  
irregularities in portions of the screen. Should this occur, adjust  
Clock, Phase, H-Posand V-Posfor optimum computer  
image (Fine Sync adjustment).  
When Auto Syncis set to ON:  
The sync adjustment is automatically made each time the  
projector is turned on while connected to a computer or the  
input selection is changed.  
1. Select the desired computer input mode by pressing either  
Data 1 or Data 2 at the projector local keyboard or toggling  
the Input button on the Remote Control unit.  
2. Press Menu. Menu bar and Picturemenu screen appear.  
GUI operation guide is also displayed.  
3. Press 1 / 2 to select Fine Sync.  
The Auto Sync adjustment setting previously made is  
cleared when the projectors setting is changed.

Bright - adjusts the picture brightness;  
Color - adjusts the colour saturation of the projected image;  
Tint - for more purplish/greenish skin tones (NTSC only);  
Sharpness - adjusts the overall picture sharpness;  
Red - for weaker/stronger red images;  
Blue - for weaker/stronger blue images;  
Color Temperature adjusts the colour temperature of the  
projected image;  
Description of Color Temperature:

This function allows you to select the input signal type

Projection using a mirror  
Place a mirror (normal flat type) in front of the lens.  
The image reflected from the mirror is projected onto the  
screen.  
This projector is equipped with a reverse/invert image function  
which allows you to reverse or invert the projected image for  
various applications.  
Optimal image quality is produced with the projector  
positioned perpendicular to the screen with all feet flat and  
level.

number, and then press 2 to select the next digit. Continue  
this procedure for the remaining three digits, and then press  
OK.  
5. Enter the password again (Reconfirm) using 1/2/3/4, and  
then press OK

Note:  
After setting the password, be sure to write it down in a secure  
location so as not to forget it.  
It is recommended that the lamp be replaced after  
approximately 900 hours of usage. See page 29-30 for

CONNECTING RS-232C PORT  
When the RS-232C port on the projector is connected to a  
computer with an RS-232C cable (cross type, sold separately),  
the computer can be used to control the projector and check  
the status of the projector.  
1. Connect the supplied DIN-D-sub RS-232C cable to the RS-  
232C port on the projector.  
2. Connect a RS-232C cable (sold separately) to the other end  
of DIN-D-sub RS-232C cable and to the serial port on the  
computer. See page 14 for details.  
4. Clean the air filter. Clean the dust off the air filter and cover  
with a vacuum cleaner extension hose.  
5. Replace the air filter. Place the air filter underneath the tabs  
on the filter frame.  
CAUTION!  
Do not connect or remove RS-232C cable to or from the  
computer while it is on. This may damage your computer.  
The wireless mouse or RS-232C function may not operate if  
your computer port is not correctly set up. Please refer to  
the operation manual of the computer for details on setting  
up/installing the correct mouse driver.  
A Macintosh adapter may be required for use with some  
Macintosh computers. Contact your nearest Philips  
Authorised LCD Projector Dealer or Service Centre.  
For more details on specification of the use of the RS-232C  
please contact your nearest Philips Authorised LCD projector  
Dealer or Service Centre.  
6. Replace the filter cover. Insert the tab on the end of the  
filter cover into the filter cover opening and press the filter  
cover into position.  
AIR FILTER MAINTENANCE  
This projector is equipped with two air filters to ensure the  
optimal operating condition of the projector.  
The air filters should be cleaned every 100 hours of use.  
Clean the filters more often when the projector is used in a  
dusty or smoky location.  
Have your nearest Philips Authorised LCD Projector Dealer  
or Service Centre exchange the filter when it is no longer  
possible to clean it.

Cleaning and replacing the bottom air filter  
1. Unplug the powercord.  
2. Remove the bottom filter cover.  
Be sure the filter cover is securely installed. The power will not  
turn on unless it is correctly installed.  
Turn over the projector. Press the tab and lift open the filter  
cover in the direction of the arrow.  
Cleaning the side air filter (not removable)  
If dust or dirt has collected inside the air filter, clean the filter  
with a vacuum cleaner extension hose.

LAMP MAINTENANCE  
Lamp/Maintenance Indicators  
The warning lights on the projector indicate problems inside  
the projector.  
There are two warning lights: a temperature warning  
indicator (Temp.) which warns that the projector is too hot,  
and a Lamp indicator (Lamp) which lets you know when to  
change the lamp.  
3. Remove the air filter.  
Grasp the air filter between your fingers and lift it out of the  
filter cover.  
If a problem occurs, either the Temperature warning  
indicator or the Lamp indicator will light up red. After turning  
off the power, follow the procedures given in the next table.

Replacing the lamp  
If the Temperature warning indicator lights up, follow the  
above possible solutions and then wait until the projector  
has cooled down completely before turning the power back  
on. (At least 5 minutes.)  
1. Turn off the power.  
Press Power OFF. Wait until the cooling fan stops.  
2. Disconnect the powercord.  
Unplug the powercord from the AC socket and unplug all  
the other cables.  
3. Slide the lamp cage cover out.  
Turn over the projector and unfasten the user service screw  
that secures the lamp cage cover. Then slide the cover in  
the direction of the arrow.  
If the power is turned off and then turned on again, as during  
a brief rest, the Lamp indicator may be triggered, preventing  
the power from going on. Should this occur, take the  
powercord out of the wall outlet and put it back in again.  
Lamp (LCA 3112; 8670 931 12009)  
The lamp in this projector operates for approximately 1,000  
cumulative hours, depending on the usage environment. It is  
recommended that the lamp be replaced after 900 cumulative  
hours of use or when you notice a significant deterioration of  
the picture and color quality. The lamp usage time can be  
checked with the On-screen Display (see page 26). Carefully  
change the lamp by following the steps under Replacing the  
lamp.  
If the new lamp does not light after replacement, take your  
projector to the nearest Philips Authorized LCD Projector  
Dealer or Service Center for repair. Purchase a replacement  
lamp unit (lamp/cage module) of the current type  
LCA 3112; 8670 931 12009 from your nearest Philips  
Authorized LCD Products Dealer or Service Center.  
Then carefully change the lamp by following the instructions  
below. If you wish, you may have the lamp replaced at your  
nearest Philips Authorized LCD Projector Dealer or Service  
Center.  
4. Remove the lamp cage.  
Remove the securing screws from the lamp cage.  
Hold the lamp cage by the handle and pull it towards you.

Intense light hazard. Do not attempt to look into the aperture  
and lens while the projector is operating.  
As the usage environment can vary significantly, the  
projector lamp may not operate for 1000 hours.  
5. Replace the lamp cage.  
Press the lamp cage firmly into the lamp cage  
compartment. Fasten the securing screws.

To avoid injury to yourself and damage to the lamp, be sure  
to carefully follow each steps under Replacing the lamp.  
Before or after replacing the lamp, be sure to clean the air  
filters. See page 29 for cleaning the air filters.  
Resetting the lamp timer  
1. Connect the powercord.  
Plug the powercord into the AC socket of the projector.  
2. While pressing 4, 2 and OK on the projector, press Power  
ON on the projector.  
– ‘Lamp 0000His displayed, indicating that the lamp timer is  
reset.  
6. Slide the lamp cage cover in.  
Slide the lamp cage cover in the direcrtion of the arrow.  
Then fasten the user service screw.  
Note:  
Be sure the lamp timer is reset after replacing the lamp.  
If not reset, the projector does not recognize the lamp  
replacement and the previous status remains unchanged.  
KENSINGTON LOCK  
This projector has a Kensington Security Standard slot for use  
with a Kensington Micro Saver Security System. Refer to the  
information that came with the system for instructions on how  
to use it to secure the projector.  
CAUTION!  
Do not remove the lamp cage directly after operation of the  
projector. The lamp may be extremely hot. Wait at least one  
hour after the powercord is disconnected to allow the  
surface of the lamp cage to fully cool before removing the  
lamp cage.  
Be sure to remove the lamp cage by the handle. Be sure not  
to touch the glass surface of the lamp cage or the inside of  
the projector.

12. TROUBLESHOOTING  
If a fault occurs, first check the points listed below before taking the projector for repair.  
If you are unable to remedy a problem by following these hints, consult your dealer or service organisation.  
WARNING  
Under no circumstances should you try to repair the projector yourself as this could invalidate the warranty.
