See“TO LEVEL MOWER HOUSING”in the   Service and Adjustments section of this manual.   NOTE: If at a high altitude (above 3000 feet) or in cold   temperatures (below 32 F) the carburetor fuel mixture may   need to be adjusted for best engine performance. See “TO   ADJUST CARBURETOR” in the Service and Adjustments   section of this manual.   • • The left hand side of mower should be used for trim-   ming.   Drive so that clippings are discharged onto the area   that has been cut. Have the cut area to the right of the   machine. This will result in a more even distribution of   clippings and more uniform cutting.   PURGE TRANSMISSION   CAUTION: Never engage or disengage   freewheel lever while the engine is run-   ning.   • Whenmowinglargeareas, startbyturningtotherightso   that clippings will discharge away from shrubs, fences,   driveways, etc. After one or two rounds, mow in the   opposite direction making left hand turns until finished   (See Fig. 10).   To ensure proper operation and performance, it is recom-   mended that the transmission be purged before operating   tractor for the first time. This procedure will remove any   trapped air inside the transmission which may have de-   veloped during shipping of your tractor.   IMPORTANT: SHOULD YOUR TRANSMISSION REQUIRE   REMOVAL FOR SERVICE OR REPLACEMENT, IT SHOULD   BE PURGED AFTER REINSTALLATION BEFORE OPERATING   THE TRACTOR.   • Place tractor safely on level surface with engine off and   parking brake set.   • Disengage transmission by placing freewheel control   infreewheelingposition(See“TOTRANSPORT”inthis   section of manual).   00272   FIG. 10   • • Sitting in the tractor seat, start engine. After the engine   is running, move throttle control to slow position. With   motion control lever in neutral (N) position, slowly dis-   engage clutch/brake pedal.   Move motion control lever to full forward position and   hold for five (5) seconds. Move lever to full reverse   position and hold for five (5) seconds. Repeat this   procedure three (3) times.   • If grass is extremely tall, it should be mowed twice to   reduce load and possible fire hazard from dried clip-   pings. Make first cut relatively high; the second to the   desired height.   Do not mow grass when it is wet. Wet grass will plug   mower and leave undesirable clumps. Allow grass to   dry before mowing.   Always operate engine at full throttle when mow-   ing to assure better mowing performance and proper   discharge of material. Regulate ground speed by se-   lecting a low enough gear to give the mower cutting   performance as well as the quality of cut desired.   When operating attachments, select a ground speed   that will suit the terrain and give best performance of   the attachment being used.   • • NOTE: During this procedure there will be no movement   of drive wheels. The air is being removed from hydraulic   drive system.   • Move motion control lever to neutral (N) position.Shut-   off engine and set parking brake.   Engage transmission by placing freewheel control in   driving position (See“TOTRANSPORT”in this section   of manual).   Sitting in the tractor seat, start engine. After the engine   is running, move throttle control to half (1/2) speed.   With motion control lever in neutral (N) position, slowly   disengage clutch/brake pedal.   • • • 14   Download from Www.Somanuals.com. Also, the mulched grass will biode-   grade quickly to provide nutrients for the lawn. Always   mulch with your highest engine (blade) speed as this   will provide the best recutting action of the blades.   • Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet. Wet grass tends   to form clumps and interferes with the mulching action.   The best time to mow your lawn is the early afternoon.   At this time the grass has dried and the newly cut area   will not be exposed to the direct sun.   FIG. 11   • • Certaintypesofgrassandgrassconditionsmayrequire   that an area be mulched a second time to completely   hide the clippings. When doing a second cut, mow   across or perpendicular to the first cut path.   Change your cutting pattern from week to week. Mow   northtosouthoneweekthenchangetoeasttowestthe   next week. This will help prevent matting and graining   of the lawn.   • For best results, adjust the mower cutting height so   that the mower cuts off only the top one-third of the   grassblades(SeeFig.11).Forextremelyheavymulch-   ing, reduce your width of cut on each pass and mow   slowly.   15   Download from Www.Somanuals.com. Readjust if necessary.   ACCELERATION TEST -   • Move throttle control lever from slow to fast position. If   engine hesitates or dies, turn idle fuel adjusting needle   out (counterclockwise) 1/8 turn. Repeat test and con-   tinue to adjust, if necessary, until engine accelerates   smoothly.   TO ADJUST THROTTLE CONTROL CABLE   (See Fig. 32)   The throttle control has been preset at the factory and   adjustment should not be necessary. Check adjustment   as described below before loosening cable. If adjustment   is necessary, proceed as follows:   High speed stop is factory adjusted. Do not adjust - dam-   age may result.   • With engine not running, move throttle control lever   from slow to choke position. Slowly move lever from   choke to fast position.   Check to see if hole in throttle lever and hole in speed   control bracket are aligned.   If holes are not aligned, loosen cable clamp screw and   align the holes by inserting a pencil or a 1/4" drill bit   through both holes.   Pull throttle cable up to remove slack and tighten cable   clamp screw. Remove alignment pencil or drill bit.   IMPORTANT:   NEVER TAMPER WITH THE ENGINE   GOVERNOR,WHICHISFACTORYSETFORPROPERENGINE   SPEED.OVERSPEEDINGTHEENGINEABOVETHEFACTORY   HIGH SPEED SETTING CAN BE DANGEROUS. If the carburetor does need adjustment,   proceed as follows:   In general, turning the adjusting needles in (clockwise)   decreases the supply of fuel to the engine giving a leaner   fuel/air mixture. Turning the adjusting needles out (coun-   terclockwise) increases the supply of fuel to the engine   giving a richer fuel/air mixture.   THROTTLE   LEVER   IMPORTANT:   DAMAGETOTHENEEDLESANDTHESEATS   IN CARBURETOR MAY RESULT IF NEEDLE IS TURNED IN   TOO TIGHT.   FIG. 32   NOTE: The carburetor on this engine is low emission.   It is equipped with an idle fuel adjusting needle with a   limiter cap, which allows some adjustment within the limits   allowed by the cap. Do not attempt to remove the limiter   cap. The limiter cap cannot be removed without breaking   the adjusting needle.   IDLE SPEED   ADJUSTING   SCREW   • Besureyouhaveacleanairfilterandthethrottlecontrol   cable is adjusted properly (see above).   • Start engine and allow to warm for five minutes. Make   adjustments with engine running and shift/motion   control lever in neutral (N) position.   • Idle speed setting - With throttle control lever in slow   position, engine should idle at 1750 RPM. If engine   idles too slow or fast, turn idle speed adjusting screw   in or out until correct idle is attained.   IDLE FUEL   ADJUSTING   NEEDLE   FIG. 33   25   Download from Www.Somanuals.com.
