Creek Audio Home Theater System Evolution 2 User Manual

EVOLUTION 2
INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER
DESIGNED AND ENGINEERED
IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Thank you for purchasing the Creek EVOLUTION 2. You are now in possession of a State of the Art
integrated amplifier. The functions and operation of the EVOLUTION 2 are very simple. However, the
following notes are provided to explain all aspects of its design and use.
MAINS CONNECTION
When unpacking the amplifier please keep the packing material in a safe place for possible future use. In
the pack there is a separate mains cable suitable for connecting to the mains supply in the country of use.
The IEC socket end of the cable should be firmly inserted into the connector on the rear panel marked
"Mains Input".
Before switching on the amplifier check the voltage selector switch on the rear panel to ensure it is set
correctly to the voltage of the country in which the amplifier is being used. Remember, do not overload
the mains wall socket with too many plugs or adaptors. The high quality performance of the amplifier
will be impaired if the electrical supply to it is in poor condition. If in doubt, consult a qualified electrician
or your dealer.
The ‘Mains Input’ connection is also fitted with a fuse. The value is clearly stated on the rear panel.
INPUT CONNECTION AND SWITCHING
The rotary selector switch on the left-hand side of the amplifier is used to select and listen to any of the
desired inputs. There are four inputs plus tape, which is selected by the button marked tape. The
selected input will appear in the display.
All line level inputs have the same sensitivity. It is not absolutely necessary to use the precise inputs as
designated, with the exception of the AV Direct. You may, for example, plug a CD player into the Tuner
input and obtain exactly the same result or performance as the dedicated CD input. However, you need
to be aware that the front panel display will always reflect the input as designated on the rear panel.
Therefore our recommendation would always be to connect to the designated input.
The AV Direct input is for use with a surround sound processor. This input caters specifically for those
people who are more than happy with their AV solution, but not happy with the stereo option. To
connect from a processor, it is necessary to run an interconnect from the front pre-outs to the AV Direct
input. The Evolution 2 amplifier then becomes a standalone amplifier for front speaker use in 5.1 mode.
When the AV Direct input is selected in this configuration, the Evolution 2’s signal level is not controlled
by its volume knob.
The pre-amp output and the power amp input is available through RCA sockets on the rear panel.
However, when using an external device, such as a sub-woofer to extend the lower frequencies of your
stereo speakers for example, the sub-woofer should be connected to the pre-amp output.
For added flexibility, the first input on the EVOLUTION 2 can be used either for vinyl disc or auxiliary line.
To connect your turntable, it is necessary to have the optional Sequel phono plug-in board fitted.
Alternatively Creek Audio produces a separate range of phono pre-amplifers, which should be connected
to the Aux input.

EVOLUTION 2 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
POWER CONSUMPTION
It is appreciated by hi-fi enthusiasts that leaving equipment powered up continuously can improve the
performance. However, this small improvement in sound quality comes at the expense of higher power
consumption from the mains, which will cost more for your electricity and also reduced working life of the
product.
We recommend that if the equipment is not being used for a period of time, it would be better to switch it off from
the mains switch on the front panel. Normal performance can be achieved in a short period of time.
OPERATING THE EVOLUTION 2
Make sure that the amplifier is on a suitable table, shelf or hi-fi equipment cabinet.
It is important to allow adequate ventilation to the heat-sink in the centre of the unit. Avoid obstruction of the
ventilation slots on the top and bottom of the amplifier. It may be necessary to place the amplifier on the top of
other equipment, or a separate shelf to allow for this.
Switch on the amplifier by pressing the push button marked Power on the right hand side of the front panel. The
power button on the remote handset does not turn on the amplifier. You will note that once switched on, the
amplifier shows a pre-set moderate turn on volume level.
Select the desired input from either the rotary selector or remote handset. Adjust the volume and settle down to
listen. To switch off the amplifier, press the power button.
Your EVOLUTION 2 amplifier is designed to give you years of reliable use. If you need more assistance, it is always
advisable to go back to the supplying dealer for his expert help. If you are unfortunate enough to need service
work to be carried out on your amplifier, it should be returned to your dealer in the original packing material if
possible.
REMOTE CONTROL
Creek’s SRC 3 remote control handset allows the user to operate the volume control, input selection and mute by
an infra-red signal using NEC codes. It should be noted that the Creek SRC3 remote handset will operate both
Creek’s EVOLUTION and DESTINY range of products as well as some older Creek products. It transmits both NEC
and RC5 codes concurrently. In the case of Evolution 2 the SRC3 is not able to power up the mains.
The input button (on the left hand side of the handset beneath the numeric keys) will sequence through all
available inputs.
To mute the sound, press the mute button in the centre of the main control buttons. Pressing it a second time
returns the amplifier to the previous level at which it was playing.
Volume down and volume up buttons are on the left and right of the centre controls of the handset.
The display button found on the top right hand side of the remote dims/brightens the display. The remaining
buttons are for use with other source products.
RADIO INTERFERENCE
The Creek EVOLUTION 2 amplifier is designed to work properly in normal domestic operating conditions.
However, the amplifier's performance could be affected if sited near to a radio transmitter such as a mobile
phone etc.
