When Working Inside a Computer
Before taking covers off a computer, perform the following steps:
1. Turn off the computer and any peripherals
2. Disconnect the computer and peripherals from their power
sources to prevent electric shock or system board damage.
3. Disconnect any telephone or telecommunications lines from
the computer.
In addition, take note of these safety guidelines when appropriate:
To help avoid possible damage to systems boards, wait five
seconds after turning off the computer before removing a
component, removing a system board, or disconnecting a
peripheral device from the computer.
When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its
strain-relief loop, not on the cable itself. Some cables have a
connector with locking tabs. If you are disconnecting this type
of cable, press in on the locking tabs before disconnecting the
cable. As you pull connectors apart, keep them evenly aligned
to avoid bending any connector pins. Also, before connecting a
cable, make sure both connectors are correctly oriented and
aligned.
CAUTION
Do not attempt to service the system yourself except as explained in
this manual. Follow installation instructions closely.

Protecting Against Electrostatic Discharge
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Warning
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) is the enemy of semiconductor
devices. You should always take precautions to eliminate any
electrostatic charge from your body and clothing before touching any
semiconductor device or card by using an electrostatic wrist strap
and/or conductive mat.
Static electricity can harm system boards. Perform service at an ESD
workstation and follow proper ESD procedure to reduce the risk of
damage to components. Magma strongly encourages you to follow
proper ESD procedure, which can include wrist straps and smocks,
when servicing equipment.
You can also take the following steps to prevent damage from
electrostatic discharge (ESD):
When unpacking a static-sensitive component from its shipping
carton, do not remove the component’s anti-static packaging
material until you are ready to install the component in a
computer. Just before unwrapping the anti-static packaging,
be sure you are at an ESD workstation or grounded.
When transporting a sensitive component, first place it in an
anti-static container or packaging.
Handle all sensitive components at an ESD workstation. If
possible, use anti-static floor pads and workbench pads.
Handle components and boards with care. Don’t touch the
components or contacts on a board. Hold a board by its edges
or by its metal mounting bracket.

Chapter 2 Hardware Installation
The following steps will guide you in completing the hardware
installation of your Magma ExpressBox1.
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Warning
Computer add-in cards are susceptible to electrostatic discharge.
When moving cards, it is best to carry the cards in anti-static
packaging. If you need to set a card down, be sure to place it inside
or on top of an anti-static surface. For more information, see
“Protecting Against Electrostatic Discharge” in the Preface.
WARNING
High voltages are present inside the expansion unit when the unit’s
power cord is plugged into an electrical outlet. Disconnect the power
cord from its source before opening the enclosure cover. Turning the
system power off at the power on/off switch does not remove power
to components. High voltage is still present.
CAUTION
Before touching anything inside the enclosure, move to an ESD
station and follow proper ESD procedure. Failure to do so may result
in electrostatic discharge damaging the computer or its components.
For more information, see “Protecting Against Electrostatic
Discharge” in the Preface.
STOP
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE
PLASTIC COVER CONTAINING THE
MARKINGS SHOWN HERE. The cover
protects the power supply which could
electrocute if touched.
STOP
If your Magma product was not purchased directly from Magma, you
must check to ensure that it doesn’t contain any pre-installed PCI
Express cards.
Check the rear side of the chassis to see if a PCI Express card is
visible in the slot. If you see a PCI Express card, you should continue
installation using instructions provided by your dealer. If no separate
instructions are available, remove the cover by following instructions
included in this manual. Then remove the card as normal. If no PCI
Express card is visible, then continue with the installation.

M A G M A
This chapter provides information only on how to install 3rd Party PCI
Express cards into your Magma ExpressBox1. More details on the
installation of individual cards are provided by the card’s manufacturer.
For the purpose of installation, Magma ExpressBox1 functions exactly
as
a
standard desktop computer chassis. Always follow the
manufacturer’s instructions for installing their card on a desktop
computer.
IMPORTANT
We will provide reasonable technical support for 3rd Party cards
installed in your Magma expansion product. However, if you have
verified a successful installation of Magma ExpressBox1 (as
defined in the Verify Installation section), but experience difficulty
installing your 3rd Party cards, the card manufacturer should be
able to provide the best support.
Open Cover
Two thumbscrews retain the cover on ExpressBox. The screws are
located on the corners of the unit, on the left and right side of the cover's
back edge. Loosen these screws by turning them counterclockwise to
open the enclosure.
Once the screws are removed, simply lift the lid to gain access to the
available x16 PCI Express slot. Although the slot will accommodate x1,
x4, x8, and x16 PCI Express cards, the connection to the computer is
limited to x1 PCI Express speed.

Install 3rd Party PCI Express Card
Install PCI Express cards following PCI Express card manufacturer’s
recommendations. Some PCI Express card manufacturers recommend
that you install their software driver(s), if required, prior to installing the
hardware. If this is the case, you should install their driver before you
connect and power up your Magma ExpressBox1.
Make sure that the PCI Express card is fully seated in the connectors.
When correctly seated in the connector, you will notice a firm resistance
when you pull up gently on the card. To keep the card in place, secure it
in the enclosure with its retaining screw (supplied with the Magma
ExpressBox1).
WARNING
Magma ExpressBox1 provides up to 55 watts of power for the 3rd
Party card. Installing a card requiring more than 55 watts of power
will damage the power supply inside Magma ExpressBox11. It is
common for high-end graphics cards to require more than 55
watts. Contact the PCI Express card manufacture to determine the
power requirements for your card. Magma ExpressBox1 is not
intended to be used with “double-wide” graphics cards.

M A G M A
IMPORTANT
The sheer number of PCI Express cards and device drivers
available makes it impossible for Magma to fully test and certify all
available PCI Express cards for use in Magma ExpressBox1. Our
best advice to you in this regard is to insist on full PCI Express
Specification compliance from your card and system vendors.
Cards and systems should be at least PCI Express Specification
Revision 1.1 compliant or better. Compliance in your system
motherboard, PCI Express cards, and console firmware (or BIOS)
is your best assurance that everything will install and operate
smoothly.
DANGER
Do not attempt to remove the
protective covering over the high-
voltage power supply. There are no
user-serviceable parts inside.
Attach Cables
CAUTION
Before connecting the power cord, check that the On/Off switch is
set to the OFF position (o = OFF, | = ON). This switch is located
directly above the 18-pin connector.
Laptop Installation
Attach one end of the PCI Express cable to the Magma ExpressCard
module and the other end to the connector on the back of the Magma
unit. The cable connects to using thumbscrews; therefore no tools are
required.

Before inserting the Magma ExpressCard, power down your laptop
computer. Use the procedures for shutting down your operating system
and shutting off power to your system provided in your owner’s manual
or system documentation.
Insert the Magma ExpressCard/34 module with the logo side up, into
the ExpressCard slot on your computer. Gently push the card until it is
firmly seated.
NOTE
The Magma ExpressCard module can only be used in a computer
system that contains an ExpressCard slot. It will not function in
CardBus or PCMCIA slots.
NOTE
If your laptop’s ExpressCard slot is “spring-loaded”, be sure that your
ExpressCard is inserted correctly. It is very easy for this style slot to
partially release a card if touched slightly.
For more information on using ExpressCard modules, please refer to
your computer’s user manual or system documentation.
Desktop or Server Installation
Power down your computer. Use the procedures for shutting down your
operating system and shutting off power to your system provided in your
owner’s manual or system documentation.
After the host computer is off and all power cords disconnected, remove
the cover and insert the Magma PCIe host card (EEX1) into a vacant
PCI Express (PCIe) slot by gently pushing the card until it is firmly
seated. Be sure to secure the card with a retaining screw.

M A G M A
STOP
YOU MUST ONLY INSTALL THE MAGMA EEX1 INTO A PCI
EXPRESS SLOT.
Only use cards WITH brackets. This will ensure that your PCIe host
card can only be inserted into a PCIe slot. Although PCI Express
cards without brackets may fit into conventional PCI slots, you run the
risk of damaging the PCI Express host card if you insert it into a PCI
slot. Please ensure that your host computer has PCI Express slots
and install the host card only into a PCI Express slot.
Notice that the PCI Express slots are located at a greater distance from
the edge of the computer’s motherboard than are the standard PCI
slots.
It’s important to make sure you are installing the Magma EEX1 into a
PCI Express slot.

Attach one end of the PCI Express cable to the Magma EEX1 card in
the host computer and the other end to the connector on the back of the
Magma unit. The cable connects to the using thumbscrews; therefore
no tools are required for the cable connection.
Although this x1 Host Card will work correctly in any x1, x4, x8, or x16
slot, using a higher rated slot will not increase the speed beyond the
rated x1 speeds.
The Magma EEX1 is a “half-height” x1 PCIe card attached to a “full-
height” bracket for convenient mounting in most desktop computers. It is
also shipped with a low profile card bracket to allow mounting on low
profile computer systems.
For low profile case applications, you may need to change the mounting
bracket to the low profile bracket that shipped with your system. This is
done by removing the screws that hold the card to the bracket. Be sure
you are using proper ESD procedures when completing this action.
For more information on installing PCIe Cards, please refer to your
computer’s user manual or system documentation.
NOTE
If at all possible, plug all power cords from Magma ExpressBox1
and your computer into a shared power strip, preferably one that
has surge and noise suppression circuitry built into it.
Recheck Installation
Check your installation before powering up Magma ExpressBox1 for the
first time.

M A G M A
CAUTION
If you are using a power source other than 110V US Standard, you
will need a different power cord to connect your source power to the
power adapter, or a power cord adapter so you can plug the 110V
US Standard power cord directly into your source power.
Fortunately, the power supply is auto-switching, so the only thing you
will need is the correct power cord connector.
Applying Power Correctly
You must apply power to Magma ExpressBox1 BEFORE you power up
your computer. This allows the computer BIOS to identify and assign
resources appropriately.
Check the front of the enclosure to be sure there is a glowing red LED in
a ‘steady state’. If the LED is flickering turn power off and on until a
‘steady state’ is reached.
IMPORTANT
When powering up, pay close attention to LEDs on that
shines through the front panel. The red light must be solid red
before the system will function properly. If the red LED is
flickering, there may be a power problem occurring during
start-up.
This problem may be resolved by turning
ExpressBox off and on again until the LED remains on at a
steady state.
