Wireless LAN terms and concepts
There are two types of Wireless networks: Infrastructure mode and
Ad-hoc
Infrastructure Mode
Infrastructure mode networks have a central Access point/Base
station at the heart of the network. The Access point/Base station
can also act as a bridge or a gateway to a wired network. When the
Brother wireless device is set in this mode, it receives all print jobs
via an access point.
2 - 4 NC-2200W WIRELESS SETTING
Download from Www.Somanuals.com. All Manuals Search And Download.

Ad-hoc Mode
Ad-hoc networks (also sometimes referred to as peer-to-peer
networks) do not have a central Access point. Each Wireless client
communicates directly with each other. When the Brother wireless
device is set in this mode, it receives all print/scan jobs directly from
the computer sending the print data.
Channels
Wireless networks use Channels. There are up to 14 channels that
can be used. However, in many countries the number of channels
available are restricted. For more information, see NC-2200w Print/
Scan server Specifications on page A-4.
Network Name (SSID/ESSID)
Each wireless network has its own unique network name (technically
referred to as SSID/ESSID). The network name is assigned on the
Access Point or the ad-hoc network devices and should match the
Access Point or the ad-hoc network devices you want to associate.
Download from Www.SomanualsN.coCm-.2Al2l M0a0nWualsWSeIaRrcEhLAEndSDSowSnloEaTd.TING 2 - 5

Authentication and Encryption
Most Wireless networks use some kind of security settings. These
security settings define the authentication (how the device identifies
itself to the network) and encryption (how the data is encrypted as it
is sent on the network). If you do not correctly specify these options
when you are configuring your Brother wireless device, it will not be
able to connect to the Wireless network. Therefore care must be
taken when configuring these options. Please refer to the information
below to see which authentication and encryption methods your
Brother wireless device supports. For more information on Wireless
Authentication Methods
The Brother NC-2200w supports the following methods:
Open System
Wireless devices are allowed access to the network without any
authentication.
Shared Key (Infrastructure mode only)
A secret pre-determined key is shared by all devices that will
access the wireless network.
The NC-2200w uses following WEP key as pre-determined key.
Encryption Methods
Encryption is used to secure the data itself. The NC-2200w supports
WEP encryption.
None
No encryption method is used.
WEP
By using WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy), the data is transmitted
and received with a secure key.
2 - 6 NC-2200W WIRELESS SETTING

Network Key (WEP Key)
This key is a 64-bit or 128-bit value that must be entered in an ASCII
or HEXADECIMAL format.
64 (40) bit ASCII:

name of the NC-2200w over the setup procedure. The default
node name for the NC-2200w is usually BRN_xxxxxx(where
xxxxxxis the last six digits of the Ethernet address of the NC-
2200w). You can see this information from the Network
Configuration Page. To learn how to print the Network
Configuration Page, see Test Button on page 1-4.

Error during printing
If you try to print while other users are printing large amounts of data
(e.g. many pages or color pages with high resolution), the NC-2200w
and printer is unable to accept your print job until the ongoing printing
is finished. If the waiting time of your print job exceeds a certain limit,
a time out situation occurs, which causes the error message. In such
situations, execute the print job again after the other jobs are
completed.
Windows NT®4.0 Troubleshooting
Trouble printing with Windows NT®4.0
If you are having trouble printing with Windows NT®4.0, check the
following:
1
Make sure that TCP/IP and TCP/IP print service are installed
and running on the Windows NT®4.0 system or the LAN Server
file server.
2
If you are using DHCP and you have not created a reservation

Windows® 2000/XP IPP Troubleshooting
Want to use a different Port number other than 631
If you are using Port 631 for IPP printing, you may find that your
firewall may not let the print data through. If this is the case, use a
different port number (port 80), or configure your Firewall to allow
Port 631 data through.
To send a print job using IPP to a Printer/MFC/DCP using Port 80
(the standard HTTP port) enter the following when configuring your
Windows® 2000/XP system.
Web Browser Troubleshooting (TCP/IP)

If you cannot connect to the NC-2200w using your web browser
it may be worth checking the Proxy Settings of your browser.
Look in the Exceptions setting and if necessary, type in the IP
address of the NC-2200w. This will stop your PC from trying to
connect to your ISP or proxy server every time you wish to look
at the NC-2200w.
Make sure that you are using the proper Web Browser, we
recommend Netscape Navigator version 4.0 or later/ Microsoft
Internet Explorer version 5.0 or later.

General Information
Protocols
Protocols are the standardized sets of rules for transmitting data on
a network. Predetermined protocols allow the users to gain access
to the network-connected resources. The NC-2200w uses TC/IP
protocols to communicate and print.
TCP/IP
This is the most popular set of protocols used for communication
such as Internet and E-mail. This protocol can be used in almost
all the operation systems such as Windows®, Macintosh® and
Linux.
Protocol Configuration Items
TCP/IP Configuration
• IP Address
• Gateway (when routers exist on your network)
IP Address
An IP address is a series of numbers that identifies each computer
connected to the Internet. An IP address consists of four numbers
separated by dots. Each number is between 0 and 255. You must
allocate a unique IP address that is correct for the attached
network.
Example) In a small network, set the IP addresses by changing
the final number.

Subnet mask
Subnet masks restrict network communication and an example of
one follows...
- 255.255.0.0
Here is an example of an IP address and a subnet mask.
IP Address
Subnet Mask
193. 1.
255. 255. 0.
2.
3
0
0 means this part of the address is not limited for communication.
Example) PC1 can talk to PC2
PC1 IP Address
Subnet Mask
193. 1.
255. 255. 0.
2.
3
0
PC2 IP Address
Subnet Mask
193. 1.
255. 255. 0.
3.
4
0
In the above example, we can communicate with anything that has
an IP address that begins with 193.1.X.X
Gateway (Router)
A Gateway is the transfer device that passes data between
networks. A gateway is a network point that acts as an entrance to
another network and sends data transmitted via the network to an
exact destination. The router knows where to direct data that
arrives at the gateway. If a destination is located at an external
network, the router transmits data to the external network. If your
network communicates with other networks, you may need to
configure the Gateway IP address. If you do not know the Gateway
IP address then contact your Network Administrator.
Node name
Node name appears in current BRAdmin Professional or Network
configuration page. Default Node name of the NC-2200w is
"BRN_xxxxxx" ("xxxxxx" is the last six digits of Ethernet
address.)
Node name is also referred to as Windows computer name
(NetBIOS name) or a DNS host name.

Reloading firmware using BRAdmin Professional
Utility
General
The firmware on the NC-2200w is stored in flash memory. This
means that you can upgrade the firmware by downloading the
appropriate update file. To get the latest firmware update, visit the
Brother Solutions web site at http://solutions.brother.com/
Some software versions that we provide will automatically
factory reset your print server parameters. We try to avoid
doing this. However, if we add a significant new feature to our
NC-2200w, it can result in the print server being factory reset.
Because of this, we STRONGLY recommend that you make a note
of the current print server configuration before you upgrade. To do
this, print out a Network configuration page. To learn how to print the
Network Configuration Page, see Test Button on page 1-4.
Reloading firmware
1
Select the appropriate device on the list.
2
3
Select Load Firmware from Control.
Enter the Firmware File name and the password and then click
Load. Reloading process will start.
4
Status LED of the NC-2200w blinks. Don’t turn off the NC-
2200w power switch until the NC-2200w returns to ready.
Only Link LED lights when the NC-2200w returns to ready.
