lost. Temporary settings (for example,  
Contrast) will be lost. During a power failure  
the machine will retain the date and time for  
approximately 60 hours.

You can set the machine to change  
automatically for Daylight Saving Time. It will  
set itself forward one hour in the Spring, and  
back one hour in the Fall.  
You can save toner using this feature. When  
you set Toner Save to On, print appears  
lighter. The default setting is Off.

General Setup  
Sleep Time

Quiet mode feature

The Sleep mode Setting can reduce power  
consumption. When the machine is in Sleep  
mode (Power Save mode) it acts as though it  
is turned off. The machine will wake up and  
start printing when it receives a print job.  
Quiet mode

The Quiet mode setting can reduce noise  
while printing. When Quiet Mode is turned On,  
the print speed becomes slower. The default  
setting is Off.  
You can choose how long the machine must  
be idle before it goes into Sleep mode. When  
the machine receives a print job or makes a  
copy, the timer will be reset. The default  
setting is 3 minutes.

Access to restricted operations can be  
enabled by creating a restricted user.  
Restricted users must enter a password to  
use the machine.  
Make a careful note of your password. If you  
forget it, you will have to reset the password

user login name, through Web Based

features made available through this setting.  
You can set up one Public user.

After a restricted user has finished using the  
machine, it will return to the Public setting  
within one minute.  
This setting allows you to switch between  
registered restricted users or Public mode  
when Secure Function Lock is turned on.  
You can exit from the restricted user mode by  
pressing the following keys:  
Changing to the restricted user mode  
Clear when you are in the copy mode.  
(SCAN) when you are in the scan mode.  
Then LCD will ask you Go to Public?.  
Press 1 to choose 1.Yes.

press OK. Enter your four-digit password  
and press OK.  
• If your User ID has a page limit restriction  
and you have already reached the  
maximum number of pages, the LCD will  
show Limit Exceededwhen you try to  
print data. Contact your administrator to  
check your Secure Function Lock

You can sort multiple copies. Pages will be  
stacked in the order 1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2 3, and so  
on.  
You can choose from a range of quality  
settings. The default setting is Auto.  
Auto  
a Load your document.  
Auto is the recommended mode for  
ordinary printouts. Suitable for documents  
that contain both text and photographs.  
b Use the numeric keys to enter the  
number of copies (up to 99).

Suitable for documents containing only

Cleaning and checking  
the machine  
Important  
Use neutral detergents. Cleaning with  
volatile liquids such as thinner or benzine  
will damage the surface of the machine.  
A
Clean the outside and inside of the machine  
regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth. When you  
replace the toner cartridge or the drum unit,  
make sure that you clean the inside of the  
machine. If printed pages are stained with  
toner, clean the inside of the machine with a  
dry, lint-free cloth.  
WARNING  
• DO NOT put a toner cartridge or a toner  
cartridge and drum unit assembly into a  
fire. It could explode, resulting in  
injuries.  
• DO NOT use flammable substances,  
any type of spray, or an organic  
solvent/liquid containing alcohol or  
ammonia to clean the inside or outside  
of the product. Doing so could cause a  
fire or electrical shock. Instead, use only  
a dry, lint-free cloth.

Cleaning the scanner

Clean the white plastic surface (2) and  
scanner glass (3) underneath it with a  
soft lint-free cloth moistened with water.  
Note  
In addition to cleaning the scanner glass  
and glass strip with a soft lint-free cloth  
moistened with water, run your finger tip  
over the glass to see if you can feel  
anything on it. If you feel dirt or debris,  
clean the glass again concentrating on  
that area. You may need to repeat the  
cleaning process three or four times. To  
test, make a copy after each cleaning.  
f Close the document cover.

Cleaning the corona wire  
A
If you have print quality problems or the LCD  
shows Drum Error, clean the corona wire  
as follows:  
h Turn on the machine’s power switch.  
a Leave the machine turned on for 10  
minutes for the internal fan to cool the  
extremely hot parts inside the machine.  
b Press the front cover release button and  
then open the front cover.

c Take out the drum unit and toner  
cartridge assembly.

• We recommend that you put the drum unit  
and toner cartridge assembly on a piece of  
disposable paper or cloth in case you  
accidentally spill or scatter toner.  
HOT SURFACE  
After you have just used the machine, some  
internal parts of the machine will be  
extremely hot. Wait for the machine to cool  
down before you touch the internal parts of  
the machine.  
• Handle the drum unit and toner cartridge  
assembly carefully. If toner scatters on  
your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off  
with cold water.  
• To prevent damage to the machine from  
static electricity, DO NOT touch the  
electrodes shown in the illustration.  
d Clean the corona wire inside the drum  
unit by gently sliding the green tab from  
left to right and right to left several times.

Cleaning the drum unit

Note  
Be sure to return the tab to the home  
position (a) (1). If you do not, printed  
pages may have a vertical stripe.  
If your printout has black or white dots or  
other repeating marks at 3.7 in. (94 mm)  
intervals, the drum may have foreign  
material, such as glue from a label stuck on  
the drum surface. Follow the steps below to  
solve the problem.  
e Put the drum unit and toner cartridge  
assembly back into the machine.  
a Make sure that the machine is in the  
Ready mode.  
Press Menu, 6, 6, then press Start to  
print the drum dot check sheet.

drum roller to find the mark. For

example, a dot in column 2 on the check  
sheet would mean that there is a mark in  
the “2” region of the drum.

g Turn the drum unit as shown in the  
illustration. Make sure that the drum unit  
gear (1) is on the left hand side.

i Turn the drum unit gear toward you by  
hand while checking the surface of the  
suspected area.  
l Put the toner cartridge back into the  
drum unit until you hear it lock into place.  
If you put the cartridge in correctly, the  
green lock lever will lift automatically.  
j When you have found the mark on the  
drum that matches the drum dot check  
sheet, wipe the surface of the drum  
gently with a cotton swab until the mark  
on the surface comes off.  
Note  
Make sure that you put in the toner  
cartridge correctly or it may separate from  
the drum unit.  
Important  
DO NOT clean the surface of the  
photosensitive drum with a sharp object or  
any liquids.  
k Turn the drum unit back over.

Cleaning the paper pick-up roller periodically  
may prevent paper jams by ensuring the  
proper feeding of the paper.  
If you have paper feed problems, clean the  
pick-up rollers as follows:  
a Turn off the machine’s power switch.

b Disconnect all cables, and then unplug  
the power cord from the AC power  
outlet.  
c Pull the paper tray completely out of the  
machine.  
n Close the front cover of the machine.  
o Turn on the machine's power switch.

d Tightly wring out a lint-free cloth soaked  
in lukewarm water, and then wipe the  
separator pad (1) of the paper tray with  
it to remove dust.

machine, carefully repack the machine in  
the original packaging to avoid any  
damage during transit. The machine  
should be adequately insured with the

injuries at least two people should lift the
