This Application Memory Card guide includes information on the Application
Memory Card for Nokia 9110 and 9110i communicators. On the memory card
there are three pre-installed applications: WAP services, Find, and Quick
imaging.
This Application Memory Card guide includes information on:
inserting and using the application memory card,
installing new applications to your communicator and on the memory
card, and
information on how to use the new applications: WAP services, Find, and
Quick imaging.
You can find these applications on the memory card and on the CD-ROM.
WARNING! Do not try to format the
extra application memory card as this will
destroy all data, including the pre-
installed applications, on your memory
card.
To insert the memory card
First follow these steps to insert the memory card into the communicator:
1 Close the device cover and make sure that the phone is switched off. If it is
on, press

2 Remove the communicator battery (if there is an existing card, ensure all
memory card applications are closed from the communicator interface be-
fore removal).
3 Open the hatch at the back of the communicator: carefully open the lid by
easing it up from the ridges on both sides.
4 Insert card into the slot with label facing up and bevelled corner as shown

sure to close all memory card applications before removing the card.
If you are installing an application to the memory card and you need
to reboot the communicator, do not remove the card until the reboot
is complete. Otherwise the application files may be lost.
If you have an application on both the memory card and the
communicator, the one in the communicator is used.

you install the WAP services
application on the memory card and
not into the memory of the
communicator.
The WAP services, Find, and Quick imaging applications can be found on the
CD-ROM under the directory d:\\9110_sw (substitute dwith the letter of
your CD drive).
If you need to re-install, for example, WAP services, or if you want to install
new applications onto the memory card, follow either of these two steps:
Connect the communicator to your PC with the PC Suite for Nokia 9110
Communicator program. Then click on the Install/Remove icon and select
Memory card as Install Location. Proceed to install software.

2. WAP services
The WAP services application can be used to access Internet services which
are based on the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). These services can
contain news, weather reports, flight times, dictionaries, etc.
Note: The content of each service
depends on the content provider of that
service. To use such a service, follow the
instructions provided by the content
provider.
To obtain access to WAP services, you need:
to be in a network which supports data calls,
to have a data service in your SIM card,
a WAP access point from a WAP service provider, and
to enter the proper WAP service settings.
Your WAP service provider will give you instructions on how to configure the
WAP service settings. Follow the instructions carefully.
To start the WAP services application
Open the Internet application and scroll down to WAP services, and press
Select.
To close the WAP services application press Close, see figure 1.
To disconnect from the WAP services, press Hang up. The Disconnecting”
note will be shown on the display and the data call will end.

Differences between the WWW and WAP services applications
The WAP services application is similar to the WWW application in the Nokia
9110 Communicator but there are two significant differences:
The WAP services application uses a data call to access the WAP access
points. However, the WAP access points are not the same as the ones
defined in the Internet settings of your communicator. For the WAP
services to function, you need to define WAP access points. Go to the WAP
services application and select Settings.
Certain WAP services bookmarks can be accessed through a specific access
point, for example, banking services may have to be accessed through the
banks own access point. The easiest way to use these kinds of services, is
to define an altogether new bookmark which uses the correct WAP access
point.
Note: The WAP services
application cannot be used at
the same time with other
applications.
WAP services settings
Before being able to use WAP services, you need to store the required
connection settings.
1 Open the Internet application, go to WAP services and press Select.
2 When you are in the WAP services main view, select Settings.
Information concerning the settings can be obtained from your WAP service
provider. Your service provider may be able to send some or all of the required
settings to you via a special short message, an Over The Air (OTA) message.
After you have accepted these settings, you can start using the WAP services
application or you can edit the settings as described below.
To define WAP access points manually
1 Press Settings in the WAP services main view.
2 Choose Access points and press Change.
3 Press New. If you have already defined WAP access points, choose the one
you want to modify and press Edit.
4 Scroll to the setting you want to modify and press Change, see figure 2.

require a user name for connection authentication.
Prompt password: Yes/No Select No, if you want your password to be saved.
Select Yes, if you must enter a new password every time you connect to the
service. For example, banking services and other services which need
connection security may require you to fill in a password every time you
connect to the service.
Password Enter the password which you have received from your service
provider. Filling the password field may be optional, some services do not
require a password for connection authentication. Password characters are
shown as asterisks (*).

also effects the data call speed. When ISDN is selected, the data call speed
includes only the options 9600 and 14400 b/s. The speed of the data call
depends on the service provider.
Data call speed: Autobauding/9600/14400 Autobauding selects the data
call speed automatically. Check which speed your service provider uses.
Autobauding is not possible, if ISDN has been selected as the Data call type.

3. Find
With the Find application you are able to search for different kinds of
documents and files which have been saved either in the memory of the
communicator or on the memory card. Find application is able to search for:
Calendar events, To-do list items and Memos,
contact cards,
short messages,
mail messages,
notes,
faxes,
tones (tunes and .WAV files),
images (.GIF, .JPEG and .UPF files),
WWW bookmarks, and
folder names.
The Find application searches for specific words occurring in document names
or in the contents of a file. You can also search for certain types of documents
without any specific search words. The Find application allows you to set
different search criteria to make the search more specific. It is also possible to
save your search criteria and results.
To start the Find application
1 Press the System application button.
2 Scroll to the Find application and press Select.
Search criteria
Use the arrow keys to move from one field to another. You can modify the
search settings by pressing Change. Limiting your search to just a few criteria
may make searching quicker but does not necessarily offer the best results.
To change the data type
1 Press Change. A pop-up box opens, listing the available fields: Calendar
event, Calendar memo, Contact, SMS, Mail, Note, Fax, Tone, Image, URL,
and Folder (see figure 1). Find application will search through your own
texts as well as texts you have received as short messages, faxes, or e-mail.

2 Use the arrow keys to scroll to the data type you want to remove from the
selection and press Toggle.
Note: To allow for the widest possible
search, the default setting is that all data
types are selected. To remove the
selection, press None. To return to the
default setting, press All.
3 Press OK to close the window.
Note: If the OK button is
dimmed, you have not chosen
any items. Select an item or
press All and then press OK.
You can go through the rest of the settings in the similar way.
Modified allows you to search for files or documents which have been
created at a certain time or within a certain time limit. The available options
are: Any time, Today, Yesterday, Last week, Last month, Tomorrow, Next week,
Next month, and Other. Other lets you define your own time limit. Fill in the
from and to fields.
Note: When you use Other, the date
format should be dd.mm.yy. Otherwise
the search result is not reliable. You can
change the date format in the System
application, select Settings, Preferences.

16
Location allows you to choose whether you want to search for the
document or file from the communicators memory, from the memory card, or
both memories.
Search text in you can search for text which appears in the Document name,
Document content, Document name or content, or Document name and
content. The most restricting search criterion is the last, Document name and
content. If you choose this criteria, the text you are searching for must appear
in both the documents name and in its content.
Partial word allows you to search for partial words. Options are: Yes/No. For
example, if you search for the word communicator and you have selected Yes,
writing communicwill find the word communicatoras well as the word
communication.
Case sensitive If it is important to your search whether the word has been
written with upper or lower case lettering, select Yes for this option. This way
you can make your search case sensitive and Find application will search for
the exact match to what you have written.
Note: When you open the Find
application for the first time, you can see
the default settings. You can always
return to these settings by pressing Clear
in the settings view.

Troubleshooting
1. A connection cannot be established between the digital camera and
the communicator.
Make sure that the digital camera supports the IrTran-P protocol. You can
verify this from the manual of your digital camera.
Check that the infrared ports of the camera and the communicator face
each other and that the link is unobstructed.
Check that you have activated both devices, the camera to send and the
communicator to receive images.
2. Images have been received but cannot be found.
Check the Quick imaging settings:
If Use memory card is set to Yes, you can find the images in the Notes
application in the memory card folder.
If Use memory card is set to No, you can find the images in the Notes
application in the Downloaded files folder.
3. The recipient is unable to open UPF attachments
The recipients device probably does not support the UPF format. Try
setting Convert to JPEG to Yes in the Quick imaging settings view, as JPEG
is a more widely supported image format.
4. How to convert UPF pictures to JPEG format after they have been
received to the communicator?
You can convert images between UPF and JPEG formats in the Digital
camera connectivity application, which can be found in the System
application. Press the Menu button in the Image list view and select
Convert to JPEG.
5. There is not enough memory to send images as mail attachments
Sending many or very large images at once via mail requires a lot of free
memory. It is recommended that you set Use memory card to Yes. To free
memory from your communicator, delete unnecessary documents or move
documents to the memory card, or use the PC Suite to move documents
from your communicator to a PC.

5. Careand
maintenance
Your Nokia 9110i Communicator is a product of superior design and
craftsmanship and should be treated with care. The suggestions below will
help you to fulfil any warranty obligations and to enjoy this product for many
years.
When using your communicator, battery, charger OR any accessory:
Keep it and all its parts and accessories out of small childrens reach.
Keep it dry. Precipitation, humidity and liquids contain minerals that will
corrode electronic circuits.
Do not use or store it in dusty, dirty areas. Its moving parts can be damaged.
Do not store it in hot areas. High temperatures can shorten the life of
electronic devices, damage batteries, and warp or melt certain plastics.
Do not store it in cold areas. When the communicator warms up (to its normal
temperature), moisture can form inside the communicator, which may
damage electronic circuit boards.
Do not attempt to open it. Non-expert handling of the device may damage it.
Do not drop, knock or shake it. Rough handling can break internal circuit
boards.
Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to clean
it. Wipe it with a soft cloth slightly dampened in a mild soap-and-water
solution.
Do not paint it. Paint can clog the devices moving parts and prevent proper
operation.
Use only the supplied or an approved replacement antenna. Unauthorised
antennas, modifications or attachments could damage the communicator and
may violate regulations governing radio devices.
If the communicator, battery, charger or any accessory is not working properly,
take it to your nearest qualified service facility. The personnel there will assist
you and, if necessary, arrange for service.

23
Important
The data on the memory card does not have password protection. When the
system is locked, the memory card data can not be accessed until the lock code
of the communicator is entered (see the Users manual). If the card is removed
from your communicator and used in another device, the data can be read by
any user. As with computer floppy disks, take care of sensitive information.
Keep all memory cards out of small childrens reach.
Formatting the card will erase all data. To avoid losing data or damaging your
memory card:
1 Do not remove the battery from the communicator in the middle of a
memory card operation (see the Users manual for more information).
2 Be sure to close all memory card applications before removing the battery.
3 Do not bend the card.
4 Do not use or store the product in high temperatures, direct sunlight or
high humidity. Avoid conditions that will cause condensation on the card.
5 Keep the card away from corrosive materials.
6 Avoid touching the electrical contact area of the card.
7 Do not insert the memory card to another device such as a digital camera
as this may cause loss of data.
When not in use, return the card to the carrying case. Keep the card out of
direct sunlight.
When the battery is empty, the communicator will shut down. Before this
happens a low battery warning is given on the communicator display. If the
shutdown happens during a data transfer operation, the system will attempt
to close all files. If a file is in the process of being transferred, then the
complete file may not be transferred in full. It is recommended for correct
memory card operation that you charge a low battery before use.
Important! See the
communicator Users
manual for more
information on safety.
