PRODUCT WARRANTY STATEMENT  
Printers  
General information  
All Zebra Card Printers are warranted against defects in m aterial or  
workm anship for twelve (12) m onths from the purchase date.  
Proof of purchase or shipm ent date is required to validate the warranty  
period. The warranty becom es void if the equipm ent is m odified,  
im properly installed or used, dam aged by accident or neglect, or if any  
parts are im properly installed or replaced by the user.

com parable packing and shipping container. In the event equipm ent is  
n o t s o p a cka g e d , o r if s h ip p in g d a m a g e is e vid e n t, it w ill n o t b e  
accepted for service under warranty. Surface transportation charges  
for return to custom ers in the continental United States is paid by  
Zebra. Otherwise, Zebra pays CPT (carriage paid to) nearest airport,  
custom er pays custom ers, duties, taxes, and freight from airport to  
destination. If Zebra determ ines that the product returned for warranty  
service or replacem ent is not defective as herein defined, the custom er  
will pay all handling and transportation costs.

Printheads  
Since printhead wear is part of norm al operation, the original printhead  
is covered by a twelve (12) m onth warranty. Warranty period begins on  
purchase date.  
To qualify for this warranty, the printhead m ust be returned to the  
factory or to an authorized service center. Custom ers are not required  
to p u rch a s e Ze b ra s u p p lie s (m e d ia a n d /o r rib b o n s ) fo r w a rra n ty  
q u a lifica tio n . Ho w e ve r, if it is d e te rm in e d th a t th e u s e o f o th e r  
m anufacturer supplies has caused any defect in the printhead for which  
a warranty claim is m ade, the user is responsible for Zebras labor and  
m aterial charges required to repair the defect. The warranty becom es  
vo id if th e p rin th e a d is p h ys ica lly w o rn o r d a m a g e d ; a ls o if it is  
determ ined that failure to follow the preventive m aintenance schedule  
listed in the Users Guide has causes defect in the therm al printhead for  
which a warranty claim is m ade.  
Spare Parts  
All parts, m aintenance kits, options kits, and accessories are warranted  
to be free of defects in m aterial and workm anship for 90 days (except  
w h e re o th e rw is e d e n o te d ) fro m d a te o f p u rch a s e . Th is w a rra n ty

11 Unpacking your card printer  
Your P420i printer ships in a carton and protective anti-static bag. Keep all  
packing m aterial in case you need to m ove or re-ship the printer.  
While unpacking, inspect the carton to ensure that no dam age occurred  
during shipping.  
Please ensure that you have a clean and nearly dust free environm ent for  
proper operation and storage of the printer.

13 Printer Installation  
The following will guide you through the installation of your P420i printer.

CAUTION: Lim it AC p o w e r s u p p lie d to th e P420i  
Printer to 110 - 230 V AC, 60 - 50 Hz for an associated  
680 m A - 310 m A. Lim it excess current draw to 16  
am ps or less, using an associated circuit breaker or  
o th e r s u ch d e vice . Ne ve r o p e ra te th e p rin te r in a  
location where operator, com puter, or printer can get  
wet. Personal injury could result. The printer m ust be  
connected to an earthed electrical power supply and  
p ro p e rly p ro te cte d a g a in s t e le ctrica l s u rg e s a n d  
grounding faults.

1.·Pla ce th e p rin te r in a lo ca tio n th a t a llo w s e a s y

The P420i Printer requires approved ribbons (see Appendix C). The Resin Therm al  
Transfer and Dye Sublim ation ribbons and Lam ination are specifically designed for  
your P420i Printer. i Series printers require the use of i Series ribbons for full color  
printing

electrostatic energy that accum ulates on the surface of  
the hum an body or other surfaces can dam age the

head carriage) and em pty core (with tape attached)  
onto the take-up spindle. Make sure the ribbon com es  
off of the top of the supply spindle and feeds to the  
top of the take-up spindle.

audible 'click' signals the locked-down position.

whenever the print head lock down occurs.  
With i Series ribbons, the printer autom atically detects  
the ribbon type inserted.  
The card flipper will not operate and an error will be

open.

possible. If cards stick together, carefully shuffle them .

24 Rejected Card Box  
General information  
The P420i Printer is equipped with a Rejected card Box. When an encoding can not be  
com pleted, the card is ejected into the Rejected Card Box. The P420i Printer counts  
the num ber of cards which go into the Reject Card Box. After 20 cards the printer  
stops, the Am ber LED Flashes and a LCD Message is displayed indicating the need to  
em pty the reject box.

shown. Allow the door to swing down and open.

The P420i Card Printer can be used with any Windows 95/98/ME/XP/Win 2000,

B.·MAGNETIC ENCODER CLEANING  
There exists two different processes to clean the Magnetic Stripe Encoder.  
The first process consists of a standard cleaning of the printer. This cleans the m ost  
im p o rta n t p a rts o f th e p rin te r; in clu d in g th e Prin t h e a d , Tra n s p o rt Ro lle r a n d  
Magnetic Stripe Encoder (refer to chapter 4 "Cleaning" for m ore instructions).

Sm art Cards can have a built-in m icrocom puter and a battery. Card Mem ory can  
store fingerprints, voice recognition patterns, m edical records and other such data.  
The P420i printer m ay be equipped with an optional contact station for program m ing  
Sm art Cards (ISO 7816). This printer m odel responds to com m ands that position the  
cards at the contact station, where the printer connects to the contacts on the Sm art
