Ab o u t Vid e o CDs a n d Su p e r VCDs
A compact disc that contains moving pictures.
The picture data uses the MPEG 1 format
(Video CD) or MPEG 2 format (Super VCD),
worldwide standards of digital compression
technology.
Video CDs and Super VCDs also contain
compact audio data. Sounds outside the range
of human hearing are compressed while the
sounds we can hear are not compressed.
Super VCD is recognized as the superior
standard and this format includes many of the
features of DVD-Video.
There are 2 versions of Video CDs.
• Version 1.1:
You can play only moving pictures and
sounds.
• Version 2.0:
You can play hi-resolution still pictures and
enjoy PBC (Playback Control) functions.
This unit conforms to both versions.

Notes on CDs
A dirty or defective disc may cause sound
dropouts while playing. To enjoy optimum
sound, handle the disc as follows.
Handle the disc by its edge. To keep the disc
clean, do not touch the surface.
If you use the discs explained below, the sticky
residue can cause the CD to stop spinning and
may cause malfunction or ruin your discs.
Do not use second-hand or rental CDs that
have a sticky residue on the surface (for
example, from peeled-off stickers or from ink,
or glue leaking from under the stickers).
There are paste residue.
Ink is sticky.
Do not stick paper or tape on the disc.
Do not use rental CDs with old labels that are
beginning to peel off.
Stickers that are
beginning to peel aw ay,
leaving a sticky residue.
Do not use your CDs with labels or stickers
attached.
Do not expose the discs to direct sunlight or
heat sources such as hot air-ducts, or leave
them in a car parked in direct sunlight where
there can be a considerable rise in temperature
inside the car.

No t e s o n CD-Rs a n d CD-RWs
• You can play CD-Rs (recordable CDs) and
CD-RWs (rewritable CDs) on this unit.
However, depending on the conditions of the
recording equipment or the disc itself, some
discs may not be playable on this unit.
• You cannot play a CD-R/ CD-RW disc if it is
not finalized (finalization is necessary for a
recorded disc to be played on the audio CD
player).
Before playing, clean the discs with an optional
cleaning cloth. Wipe each disc from the centre
out.
Wh e n yo u p la y 8 cm CDs
Use the optional Sony compact disc single
adaptor (CSA-8) to protect the CD player from
damage.
Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner,
commercially available cleaners, or antistatic
spray intended for analog discs.

Be sure to press (OFF) on the unit for tw o
seconds to turn off the clock display after
turning off the engine.
When you press (OFF) only momentarily,
the clock display does not turn off and this
causes battery wear.

Note
A unit turned off by pressing (OFF) for two
seconds cannot be operated with the card remote
commander unless (SOURCE) on the unit is
pressed or a disc is inserted to activate the unit
first.

When the battery becomes weak, the range of
the card remote commander becomes shorter.
Replace the battery with a new CR2025 lithium
battery.
• Keep the lithium battery out of the reach of
children. Should the battery be swallowed,
immediately consult a doctor.
• Wipe the battery with a dry cloth to assure a
good contact.
• Be sure to observe the correct polarity when
installing the battery.
• Do not hold the battery with metallic
tweezers, otherwise a short-circuit may
occur.
WARNING
Battery may explode if mistreated.
Do not recharge, disassemble, or dispose of
in fire.

Place the hole A in the front panel onto the
spindle B on the unit as illustrated, then push
the left side in.
Getting Started
Resetting the unit
Before operating the unit for the first time or
after replacing the car battery, you must reset
the unit.

Remove the front panel and press the RESET
button with a pointed object, such as a
ballpoint pen.

Note
Pressing the RESET button will erase the clock
setting and some memorised functions.
Detaching the front panel
You can detach the front panel of this unit to
protect the unit from being stolen.
Notes
• Be careful not to attach the front panel upside
down.
1 Press (OFF).
• Do not press the front panel too hard against the
unit when attaching it.
2 Press (OPEN), then slide the front panel
to the right side, and pull out the left
side of the front panel.
• Do not press too hard or put excessive pressure
on the display window of the front panel.
• Do not expose the front panel to direct sunlight
or heat sources such as hot air ducts, and do not
leave it in a humid place. Never leave it on the
dashboard of a car parked in direct sunlight or
where there may be a considerable rise in
temperature.

If you turn the ignition key switch to the OFF
position without removing the front panel, the
caution alarm will beep for a few seconds.
If you connect an optional power amplifier and
do not use the built-in amplifier, the beep
sound will be deactivated.
Notes
• Do not put anything on the inner surface of the
front panel.
• Be sure not to drop the panel when detaching it
from the unit.
• If you detach the panel while the unit is still
turned on, the power will turn off automatically
to prevent the speakers from being damaged.
• When carrying the front panel with you, use the
supplied front panel case.

Turning the unit on/off
Setting the clock
The clock uses a 12-hour digital indication.

Press (SOURCE) or insert a CD in the unit. For
details on operation, refer to page 10 (CD ),
page 13 (Video CD/ Super VCD), and page 18
(radio).
Example: To set the clock to 10:08
1 Press (MENU), then press either side of
(PRST) repeatedly until “CLOCK”
appears.

Press (OFF) to stop CD playback or FM/ AM
reception (the key illumination and display
remain on).
Press (OFF) for two seconds to completely
turn the unit off.

Note
If your car has no ACC position on the ignition key
switch, be sure to turn the unit off by pressing
(OFF) for two seconds to avoid car battery wear.
The hour indication flashes.
2 Press either side of (PRST) to set the
hour.
How to use the menu
This unit is operated by selecting items from a
menu.
To select, first enter the menu mode and
choose up/ down ((+)/ (–) of (PRST)), or
choose left/ right ((–)/ (+) of (SEEK/AMS)).
3 Press the (+) side of (SEEK/AMS).

scrolled in the display one by one in order.
Listening to a CD
Tip
The Motion Display mode can be turned off. (See
“Changing the sound and display settings” on

— Automatic Music Sensor (AMS)
When playing Video CDs (Ver. 2.0)/ Super
VCDs with PBC functions, you can enjoy
simple interactive operations, operations with
search functions, etc.
PBC playback allows you to play Video CDs/
Super VCDs interactively, following the menu
on the TV screen.
During playback, press either side of
(SEEK/AMS) momentarily for each track
you w ant to skip.

With Super VCDs on which bilingual sounds
are recorded, you can select the language you
want while playing the Super VCD.
Some discs are recorded in Multiplex
Broadcast with different sounds recorded on
the left and right channels. For these discs,
select the channel that plays the sound you
want to hear. The selected sound will be
played from both speakers.

subtitles whenever you want while playing the

Memorising only the
desired stations
Radio
You can preset up to 18 FM stations (6 each for
FM1, FM2, and FM3), up to 12 AM stations (6
each for AM1 and AM2) in the order of your
choice.
Memorising stations
automatically
— Best Tuning Memory (BTM)
1 Press (SOURCE) repeatedly to select the
tuner.
The unit selects the stations with the strongest
signals and memorises them in the order of
their frequencies. You can store up to 6 stations
on each band (FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and
AM2).
2 Press (MODE) repeatedly to select the
band.
3 Press either side of (SEEK/AMS) to tune
in the station that you w ant to store on
the number button.

When tuning in stations while driving, use
Best Tuning Memory to prevent accidents.

• If a CD is not in the unit, only the tuner band
appears even if you press (SOURCE).

repeatedly until “LOCAL” (local seek mode) is
displayed. Then press the (+) side of (SEEK/AMS) to
select “LOCAL-ON.” Press (ENTER).
Only the stations with relatively strong signals will
be tuned in.
Tips
• When you select the “LOCAL-ON” setting,
“L.SEEK” appears while the unit is searching for
a station.
• If you know the frequency of the station you
want to listen to, press and hold either side of
(SEEK/AMS) until the desired frequency appears
(manual tuning).

Changing the sound and
display settings
You can adjust the bass, treble, balance, and
fader.
You can store the bass and treble levels
independently for each source.
The following items can be set:

• BEEP — to turn the beeps on or off.
• RM (Rotary Commander) — to change the
operative direction of the controls of the
rotary commander.
— Select “NORM” to use the rotary
commander as the factory-set position.
— Select “REV” when you mount the rotary

steering column.

Attenuating the sound
1 Press (MENU).
Press (ATT) on the rotary commander or
card remote commander.
2 Press either side of (PRST) repeatedly
until the desired item appears.
“ATT-ON” lights up for a while.
To restore the previous volume level, press
(ATT) again.
Each time you press the (–) side of
(PRST), the item changes as follows:

Tip
t PAL/NTSC*
When the interface cable of a car telephone is
connected to the ATT lead, the unit decreases the
volume automatically when a telephone call comes
in (Telephone ATT function).

Tip
You can easily switch among categories (“SET”,
“DIS”, “EDT” (edit mode), and “P/M” (play
mode)) by pressing either side of (PRST) for

Information
The unit may not function properly if the
connectors between the unit and the front
panel are not clean. In order to prevent this,
open the front panel by pressing (OPEN), then
detach it and clean the connectors with a
cotton swab dipped in alcohol. Do not apply
too much force. Otherwise, the connectors may
be damaged.
Maintenance

When replacing the fuse, be sure to use one
matching the amperage rating stated on the
original fuse. If the fuse blows, check the
power connection and replace the fuse. If the
fuse blows again after replacement, there may
be an internal malfunction. In such a case,
consult your nearest Sony dealer.

Dismounting the unit
1 Press the clip inside the front cover w ith
a thin screw driver, and gently pry the
front cover free.
2 Repeat step 1 on the left side.
The front cover is removed.
3 Use a thin screw driver to push in the clip
on the left side of the unit, then pull out
the left side of the unit until the catch
clears the mounting.
4 Repeat step 3 on the right side.
5 Slide the unit out of the mounting.

Troubleshooting guide
The following checklist will help you remedy the problems you may encounter with your unit.
Before going through the checklist below, check the connection and operating procedures.

Un disco sucio o defectuoso puede causar
pérdidas de sonido durante su reproducción.
Para obtener un sonido óptimo, agarre el disco
de la siguiente forma.
Si emplea los discos descritos a continuación,
el residuo adherente puede causar que el CD
deje de girar y producir fallos de
funcionamiento o dañar los discos.
No utilice discos compactos de segunda mano
o de alquiler que tengan residuos adherentes
en la superficie (por ejemplo, de adhesivos
despegados o tinta, o de restos de pegamento
de los adhesivos).
Agarre el disco por los bordes y no toque la
superficie para mantenerlo limpio.

la posición OFF sin haber extraído el panel

Si conecta un amplificador opcional de
potencia y no utiliza el incorporado, los pitidos
se desactivarán.

• Procure no dejar caer el panel al extraerlo de la

Es posible memorizar hasta 18 emisoras en FM
(6 en FM1, 6 en FM2 y 6 en FM3) y hasta 12 de
AM (6 en AM1 y 6 en AM2) en el orden que
desee.
Memorización automática
de emisoras
— Memorización de la mejor sintonía (BTM)
1 Presione (SOURCE) varias veces para
seleccionar el sintonizador.
Esta unidad selecciona las emisoras de señal
más intensa y las memoriza por orden de
frecuencia. Es posible almacenar hasta 6
emisoras de cada banda (FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1
y AM2).
2 Presione (MODE) varias veces para
seleccionar la banda.
3 Presione cualquier lado de (SEEK/AMS)
para sintonizar la emisora que desee
almacenar en el botón numérico.

demasiada frecuencia, presione (MENU) y, a
continuación, cualquier lado de (PRST) varias
veces hasta que aparezca “LOCAL” (modo de
búsqueda local). A continuación, presione el lado
(+) de (SEEK/AMS) para seleccionar “LOCAL-ON”.
Presione (ENTER).
Sólo se sintonizarán las emisoras de señal
relativamente intensa.
Consejos
• Si selecciona el ajuste “LOCAL-ON”, aparecerá
“L.SEEK” mientras la unidad busca las emisoras.
• Si conoce la frecuencia de la emisora que desea

Es posible ajustar los graves, los agudos, el
balance y el equilibrio entre altavoces e,
igualmente, almacenar para cada fuente un
nivel de graves y agudos de forma
independiente.
Cambio de los ajustes de
sonido y visualización
Es posible ajustar los siguientes elementos:

Es posible disfrutar de graves nítidos e
intensos.
La función D-bass refuerza las señales de baja
y alta frecuencia con una curva más marcada
que la del refuerzo de graves convencional.
Es posible escuchar la línea de graves con
mayor nitidez aunque el sonido vocal se
encuentre al mismo nivel. Igualmente, es
posible enfatizar y ajustar los graves
fácilmente con el botón D-BASS.

La unidad puede no funcionar correctamente
si los conectores de la misma y del panel
frontal están sucios. Con el fin de evitarlo, abra
el panel frontal presionando (OPEN), a
continuación, sepárelo y limpie los conectores
con un bastoncillo humedecido en alcohol. No
aplique demasiada presión, ya que los
conectores podrían dañarse.
Mantenimiento

Cuando sustituya el fusible, compruebe que
utiliza uno con el amperaje especificado en el
fusible original. Si éste se funde, compruebe la
conexión de alimentación y sustitúyalo. Si una
vez sustituido vuelve a fundirse, es posible
que exista un funcionamiento defectuoso
interno. En este caso, póngase en contacto con
el proveedor Sony más próximo.

libere dicha cubierta con suavidad.
2 Repita el paso 1 en el lado izquierdo.
