Precautions
On safety
On placement
• If anything falls into the cabinet, unplug the unit
and have it checked by qualified personnel before
operating it any further.
• Do not install the appliance in a confined space,
such as a bookcase or built-in cabinet.
• Allow adequate air circulation to prevent internal
heat buildup.
• The unit is not disconnected from the AC power
source as long as it is connected to the mains outlet,
even if the unit itself has been turned off.
• Unplug the unit from the wall outlet if you do not
intend to use it for an extended period of time. To
disconnect the cord, pull it out by the plug, never
by the cord.
• Do not place the unit on surfaces (rugs, blankets,
etc.) that may block the ventilation slots.
• Do not install the unit near heat sources such as
radiators, or air ducts, or in a place subject to direct
sunlight, excessive dust, mechanical vibration, or
shock.
• Caution – The use of optical instruments with this
product will increase eye hazard.
• Do not install the unit in an inclined position. It is
designed to be operated in a horizontal position
only.
• Should any solid object or liquid fall into the
cabinet, unplug the recorder and have it checked by
qualified personnel before operating it any further.
• AC power cord must be changed only at a qualified
service shop.
• Keep the unit and discs away from equipment with
strong magnets, such as microwave ovens, or large
loudspeakers.
• Do not place heavy objects on the unit.
• Place the recorder in a location with adequate
ventilation to prevent heat build-up in the recorder.
• Do not block the ventilation slots by putting
anything on the recorder. If the ventilation slots on
the bottom surface are blocked, the unit can
overheat and malfunction.
On cleaning
Clean the cabinet, panel, and controls with a soft
cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent
solution. Do not use any type of abrasive pad,
scouring powder or solvent such as alcohol or
benzine.
• Do not place the recorder on a soft surface such as
a rug that might block the ventilation holes on the
bottom.
On your TVs color
If the speakers should cause the TV screen to
have color irregularity, turn off the TV at once
then turn it on after 15 to 30 minutes. If color
irregularity should persist, place the speakers
further away from the set.
• Do not place the recorder in a location near heat
sources, or in a place subject to direct sunlight,
excessive dust, or mechanical shock.
On operation
• If the recorder is brought directly from a cold to a
warm location, or is placed in a very damp room,
moisture may condense on the lenses inside the
recorder. Should this occur, the recorder may not
operate properly. In this case, remove the disc and
leave the recorder turned on for about half an hour
until the moisture evaporates.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Caution: This recorder is capable of holding a
still video image or on-screen display image on
your television screen indefinitely. If you leave
the still video image or on-screen display image
displayed on your TV for an extended period of
time you risk permanent damage to your
television screen. Projection televisions are
especially susceptible to this.
• When you move the player, take out any discs. If
you don’t, the discs may be damaged.
• If you have any questions or problems concerning
your recorder, please consult your nearest Sony
dealer.

Region code
Note on playback operations of DVDs
Your recorder has a region code printed on the
back of the unit and will only play DVDs labelled
with the same region code.
Some playback operations of DVDs may be
intentionally set by software producers. Since this
recorder plays DVDs according to the disc
contents the software producers designed, some
playback features may not be available. Also,
refer to the instructions supplied with the DVDs.
ALL
DVDs labelled
will also play on this recorder.
If you try to play any other DVD, the message
“Check Regional Code” will appear on the TV
screen. Depending on the DVD, no region code
indication may be labelled even though playing
the DVD is prohibited by area restrictions.

Note on High-Speed CD to CD-R or
CD-RW Synchro-Recording
Notes about the Discs
Certain CD conditions may cause sound
dropout or noise in the recording results,
or even create unwanted tracks on the
CD-R or CD-RW. If this happens, clean
the CD as instructed in “On cleaning”
(page 8), and record material to the CD-
R or CD-RW using normal-speed CD to
CD-R or CD-RW Synchro-Recording
only.
On handling discs
• To keep the disc clean, handle the disc by its
edge. Do not touch the surface.
• Do not expose the disc to direct sunlight or heat
sources such as hot air ducts, or leave it in a car
parked in direct sunlight as the temperature may
rise considerably inside the car.
Note on CD-R or CD-RW playback
When you playback a CD-R or CD-RW
recorded by a CD-R or CD-RW recorder,
you may not be able to playback,
depending on the recording conditions
(e.g., dirty disc, etc.). Also, you should
note that you need to finalize a CD-R or
CD-RW before playing back on another
system other than the one used to make
the recording. (Finalizing is a process to
complete the recording.)
• After playing, store the disc in its case.
On cleaning
• Before playing, clean the disc with a cleaning
cloth.
Wipe the disc from the center out.
After finalizing a CD-R disc, you can
play it in any conventional CD player.
However, depending on the state of the
recording, there may be sound skips
during playback.
After finalizing a CD-RW disc, you can
play it in a CD-RW compatible player
only.
• Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner,
commercially available cleaners, or anti-static
spray intended for vinyl LPs.

Changing the Angles
3D Surround
If various angles (multi-angles) for a scene
are recorded on the DVD, “ANGLE”
appears in the front panel display. This
means that you can change the viewing
angle.
For example, while playing a scene of a
train in motion, you can display the view
from either the front of the train, the left
window of the train, or from the right
window without having the train’s
movement interrupted.
This unit can produce a 3D Surround effect,
which simulates multi-channel audio
playback from two stereo speakers, instead
of the five or more speakers normally
required to listen to multi-channel audio
from a home theater system.

Tips on recording MP3
Playing MP3 Discs
• To enjoy high quality sound, convert to
MP3 files with a sampling frequency of
44.1kHz and a fixed bit rate of 128 kbps.
The DVD Player can play MP3 format
recordings on CD-ROM, CD-R or CD-RW
discs.
Before playing MP3 recordings, read the
following notes.
To play MP3 files in the order that you
recorded them
• Writing software that is capable of
recording MP3 files in numerical and
alphabetical order is required.
Notes on MP3
• Include a two or three digit number at the
beginning of each file name. (e.g. “01,”
“02,” ... or “001,” “002,” ...)
• It’s recommended that you use only the
root folder (do not create a child folder
under the root folder).
About MP3
• An MP3 file is audio data compressed by
using MPEG1, the audio layer-3 file-
coding scheme. We call files that have the
“.mp3” file extension “MP3 files.”
• The player can not read an MP3 file that
has a file extension other than “.mp3.”
• Noises may be heard if you play a non-
MP3 file that has the “.mp3” extension.
Note
During MP3 playing back, the recorder does not
output the audio signal via the DIGITAL OPTICAL
OUT jack so the audio signal is outputted only via
the ANALOG OUT (L/R) jacks.
The restriction of playing MP3
• This unit can play up to 255 files per disc.
A disc having more than 255 files cannot
be played files.
• This unit can also display up to 255 folders
per disc on the TV screen. A disc having
more than 255 folders cannot be displayed
folders on the TV screen .
• The unit may not play MP3 files in the
order that you recorded them on the disc.
• With a multi-session disc, the player plays
the all session.
• It may take over 30 seconds to read the
MP3 files, depending on the contents of
the disc.
Glossary
Extension:
An extension is the last three characters that
divide a file name by a period. The
extension shows the attribution of the file or
the software in which the file was created.
Session:
A session is one section on a disc between
the beginning of data and the end of written
data.
A multi-session disc has more than two
sessions.
The limitation of indications
Note
• Up to eight characters are displayed for the
name of a track.
• Characters other than uppercase letters
(“A” to “Z”), numericals (“0” to “9”) and
underscore (“_”) may not be displayed, or
may be displayed in different characters.
Depending on the state of MP3 recording, there may
be sound skips and noise during playback.
The elapsed playing time on the display may
not be correct when playing MP3 files.

Dolby Pro Logic Surround
Glossary
As one method of decoding Dolby
Surround, Dolby Pro Logic Surround
produces four channels from two-channel
sound. Compared with the former Dolby
Surround system, Dolby Pro Logic Surround
reproduces left-to-right panning more
naturally and localizes sounds more
precisely. To take full advantage of Dolby
Pro Logic Surround, you should have one
pair of rear speakers and a center speaker.
The rear speakers output monaural sound.
Bit rate
Value indicating the amount of video data
compressed in a DVD per second. The unit
is Mbps (Mega bit per second). 1 Mbps
indicates that the data per second is
1,000,000 bits. The higher the bit rate is, the
larger the amount of data. However, this
does not always mean that you can get
higher quality pictures.
Chapter
DTS
Sections of a picture or a music piece on a
DVD that are smaller than titles. A title is
composed of several chapters. Each chapter
is assigned a chapter number enabling you
to locate the chapter you want.
Digital audio compression technology that
the Digital Theater Systems, Inc. developed.
This technology conforms to 5.1-channel
surround. The rear channel is stereo and
there is discrete subwoofer channel in this
format. DTS provides the same 5.1 discrete
channels of high quality digital audio. The
good channel separation is realized because
the all channel data is recorded discrete and
processed in digital.
Dolby Digital
This sound format for movie theaters is
more advanced than Dolby Pro Logic
Surround. In this format, the rear speakers
output stereo sound with an expanded
frequency range and a subwoofer channel
for deep bass is independently provided.
This format is also called “5.1” because the
subwoofer channel is counted as 0.1 channel
(since it functions only when a deep bass
effect is needed). All six channels in this
format are recorded separately to realize
superior channel separation. Furthermore,
since all the signals are processed digitally,
less signal degradation occurs.
DVD
A disc that contains up to 8 hours of moving
pictures even though its diameter is the same
as a CD.
The data capacity of a single-layer and
single-sided DVD, at 4.7 GB (Giga Byte), is
7 times that of a CD. Furthermore, the data
capacity of a dual-layer and single-sided
DVD is 8.5 GB, a single-layer and double-
sided DVD 9.4 GB, and a dual-layer and
double-sided DVD 17 GB.
The picture data uses the MPEG 2 format,
one of the worldwide standards of digital
compression technology. The picture data is
compressed to about 1/40 of its original size.
The DVD also uses the variable rate coding
technology that changes the data to be
allocated according to the status of the
picture.
The audio data is recorded in Dolby Digital
as well as in PCM, allowing you to enjoy
more real audio presence.

Furthermore, various advanced functions
such as the multi-angle, multilingual, and
Parental Control functions are provided with
the DVD.
Title
The longest sections of a picture or a music
piece on a DVD; a movie, etc., for a picture
piece on video software; or an album, etc.,
for a music piece on an audio software.
Each title is assigned a title number enabling
you to locate the title you want.
Multi-angle function
Various angles, or viewpoints of the video
camera, for a scene are recorded on some
DVDs.
Track
Sections of a picture or a music piece on a
CD. Each track is assigned a track number
enabling you to locate the track you want.
Multilingual function
Several languages for the sound or subtitles
in a picture are recorded on some DVDs.
Parental Control
A function of the DVD to limit playback of
the disc by the age of the users according to
the limitation level in each country. The
limitation varies from disc to disc; when it is
activated, playback is completely prohibited,
violent scenes are skipped or replaced with
other scenes and so on.
Region Code
This system is used to protect copyrights. A
region number is allocated on each DVD
system or DVD disc according to the sales
region. Each region code is shown on the
system as well as on the disc packaging. The
system can play the discs that match its
region code. The system can also play discs
ALL
with the “ ” mark. Even when the region
code is not shown on the DVD, the region
limit may still be activated.
