Things to Consider Before You Connect
Protect Against Power Surges
•

Connect all components before you plug any of their power cords into the wall outlet.
Turn off the TV and/or components before you connect or disconnect any cables.
Make sure all antennas and cables are properly grounded. Refer to the Important Safeguards sheet
packed with your DVD/VCR.
Protect Components from Overheating
•
Don’t block ventilation holes on any of the components. Arrange the components so that air can
circulate freely.
•

Don’t stack components.
When you place components in a stand, make sure you allow adequate ventilation.
If you connect an audio receiver or amplifier, place it on the top shelf so the heated air from it
won’t flow around other components.
Position Cables Properly to Avoid Audio Interference
•
Insert each cable firmly into the designated jack.
•
If you place components above the TV, route all cables down the side of the back of the TV instead
of straight down the middle of the back of the TV.
•
If your antenna uses 300-ohm twin lead cables, do not coil the cables. Also, keep the twin lead
cables away from audio/video cables.
Connection Pictures
Audio/video cables are usually bundled together. For better visibility, the connection pictures in this
book show each cable separately (audio left, audio right, and video).

Compatible Discs
This DVD player is capable of playing the following types of
discs: DVDs, audio CDs, Video CDs, CDs with mp3 files, WMA
files (Windows Media Audio), and CDs with JPEG files on
them . Before you put a disc in the player, make sure it is
compatible.
DVD+Rewritable
You can’t play the following types of discs: Laserdiscs, CD-I,
CD-ROM (computer-only discs), DVD-ROM, discs recorded
using other broadcast standards (i.e. PAL or SECAM), or CD-G
discs.
Note: Some discs may not be comptible due to laser pickup and
disc design.

The pictures below show the cables needed for the connections represented in this book.
Note: Audio/Video cables (A/V cables for short) are usually sold as a bundled set, but the connection pictures in this
book show each cable separately for better visibility.

DVD/VCR + TV
1. Connect a coaxial cable to the Cable/Antenna jack on your TV (sometimes labeled ANT IN) and to
the TV jack on your DVD/VCR player.
2. Connect the coaxial cable from your cable outlet, cable box, or antenna to the ANT IN jack on your
DVD/VCR.
3. Connect the audio cables to the AUDIO OUT L (left – white) and R (right – red) jacks on the back of
your DVD/VCR player, and to the corresponding Audio Input jacks on your TV (sometimes labeled
AUDIO IN L and R).
4. Connect the video cable.
A. Basic video connection – Connect the video cable (yellow) to the VIDEO OUT jack on the back of
your DVD/VCR player, and to the Video Input jack on your TV (sometimes labeled VIDEO IN).
B. S-Video (optional) – If your TV has an S-Video jack, connect an S-Video cable (not provided) to
the S-VIDEO OUT jack on the back of your DVD/VCR player and to the S-VIDEO IN jack on your
TV. This connection is only for DVD signal. For the VCR signal, you must also connect the
standard video cable.
C. Component video (optional, connection not pictured) – If your TV has component video jacks (Y,
Pb, Pr), connect component video cables (not provided) to the COMPONENT OUT jacks on the
DVD/VCR player for the best picture quality. This connection is only for DVD signal. For the VCR
signal, you must also connect the standard video cable.

DVD/VCR + TV + Audio Receiver
Both Dolby Digital® and DTS® are audio formats used to record 5.1-channel audio signals onto the
digital track of film (while the film is being made). Both of these formats provide up to six separate
channels: left, right, center, left rear, right rear, and common subwoofer. The disc will play 5.1-channel
sound only if you’ve connected a DTS or Dolby Digital receiver or decoder and if the disc is encoded in
the Dolby Digital or DTS format.
Please Read This Before Using the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT Jack!
This player’s digital output jack is designed for a connection to a Dolby Digital or DTS receiver or decoder. Older
digital equipment may not be compatible with the Dolby Digital bitstream. Such a connection can create a high level
of noise that may be harmful to your ears, and could damage headphones or speakers. It is important to choose the
correct Digital Output setting in the DVD Player’s Sound menu, especially when you use either of the DIGITAL AUDIO
OUT jacks. For more information, go to page 45.
1. Connect the left and right audio cables to your audio/video receiver and to the AUDIO OUT L (left –
white) and R (right – red) jacks on the back of your DVD/VCR.
2. If you have a Dolby Digital or DTS receiver, use one of the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jacks to connect the
receiver to the DVD/VCR. You must also set the Digital Output setting in the Sound menu (go to
page 45).
Note: The DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jack has two options: OPTICAL and COAXIAL. Some Dolby Digital receivers have one
type of Digital Audio Input jack, and some have both. Under most conditions, optical and coaxial connections work
equally well — the only difference is the type of cable you connect to the jack.
If you want to use a less expensive cable, connect a coaxial cable to the COAXIAL jack. Rarely, but sometimes, coaxial
cables — especially long ones, pick up radio frequency (RF) interference from household appliances, nearby power
lines, and/or broadcast towers.
If you would rather use the OPTICAL jack, connect an optical digital cable to the DVD/VCR and to the corresponding
digital optical input jack on the receiver.
3. Connect the video cable.
A. Basic video connection – Connect the video cable (yellow) to the VIDEO OUT jack on the back of
your DVD/VCR player, and to the Video Input jack on your TV (sometimes labeled VIDEO IN).
B. S-Video (optional) – If your TV has an S-Video jack, connect an S-Video cable (not provided) to
the S-VIDEO OUT jack on the back of your DVD/VCR player and to the S-VIDEO jack on your TV.
This connection is only for DVD signal. For the VCR signal, you must also connect the standard

Install Batteries in the Remote
1. Remove the battery compartment cover on the back of the remote.
2. Insert new batteries. Match the polarities (+ and –) on the batteries with the diagram on the
remote.
3. Put the battery compartment cover back on the remote.
Important Battery Information
•
If you’re not going to use the remote for a month or more, be sure to remove the batteries because
they can leak and cause damage.
•
•
Dispose of batteries in the proper manner, according to federal, state, and local regulations.
Any battery may leak electrolyte if mixed with a different battery type, if inserted incorrectly, if all
batteries are not replaced at the same time, if disposed of in fire, or if an attempt is made to charge
a battery not intended to be recharged.
•
Discard leaky batteries immediately. Leaking batteries can cause skin burns or other personal injury.
Point the Remote in the Right Direction and Put it in DVD or VCR Mode
When you want the remote to operate the DVD/VCR player, point the remote at the DVD/VCR, not the
TV. The remote has to be pointed in the correct direction and toward the correct component in order
for the remote control’s signal to communicate with the sensor on the component. Make sure there is a
clear path between the remote control and the component you want to operate, so the signal isn’t
blocked.
Turn on the TV and DVD/VCR
1. Turn on your TV and tune it to the correct Video Input Channel.
• If you used a coaxial cable to connect your DVD/VCR to your TV, tune the TV to channel 3. Your
TV must be set to channel 3 the first time you set up the DVD/VCR. See page 37 for instructions
on how to change the ouput channel once you have started setup.
• If you used audio/video cables to connect your DVD/VCR, tune the the TV to its Video Input
Channel (see page 62 for help).
2. Press the DVD or VCR button to turn on the DVD/VCR.
• For DVD functions, press the DVD button.
• For VCR functions, press the VCR button.
3. The first time you turn on your DVD/VCR, the Languages
menu appears.
If you want the DVD/VCR menus to appear in English, press
the OK button on the remote control. If you prefer another
language, press the arrow down button until that language
is highlighted. Press OK to select the language.

Using the Remote Control to Choose On-screen Menu Items
Press the MENU button to bring up the Main Menu. To select an on-screen item, press the number
button on the remote control that matches the on-screen number. Selecting a menu item can take you
to another menu, activate a choice, or activate a data entry field (such as the hour field in the CLOCK
menu).
If a number doesn’t appear next to an on-screen menu, use the arrow buttons to highlight an item on
the screen, and press OK to select the highlighted item.
Complete the VCR setup

The language setting determines the language in which the
on-screen displays and menus appear. You can choose from
English, Spanish, or French. The default is English. If you

Auto Channel Search
Before you can watch channels through the VCR, you must
set the type of signal you have (cable or TV) and search for
all available channels.

The VCR gives you two ways to set the time and date: the
Auto Clock Set feature or manually.

Daylight Savings Time begins or ends.
• Remember that AUTO CLOCK SET must be set to OFF
and DAYLIGHT SAVING and TIME ZONE can’t be set to
AUTO when setting the time manually. Otherwise, the
time will be reset when the VCR is turned off.

This chapter is dedicated to connecting your DVD/VCR player. Before you start
playing discs, you might want to get familiar with the remote control — Chapter 2
has details.
If you want to skip straight to playing discs, go to Chapter 3 (page 17). It explains
playback features of DVDs, Audio CDs, Video CDs, discs that contain MP3 files.
The VCR features are described in Chapter 4, including how to record and set up
the VCR (page 29). The DVD/VCR player’s menu system is outlined in Chapter 5
(page 38), and Chapter 6 contains troubleshooting assistance, your Limited
Warranty, and additional information about your DVD/VCR player.
What to Expect
DVD and VCR Modes
As you familiarize yourself with this product, keep in mind that you need to tell
the remote which part of the unit you want to operate — the DVD part of the unit
or the VCR part. To operate the DVD part of the DVD/VCR, press the DVD button on
the remote. To operate the VCR part, press the VCR button. (You can also change
modes on the front of the unit by pressing the DVD/VCR button.)
Menu Systems
Since this product combines a DVD player with a VCR, the menu systems are
separate. The settings in one menu system don’t affect the other. For example, you
have to set the menu language for the VCR menu and then set the language for
the DVD menu.
User’s Guide
In this user’s guide, the product is generally referred to as a DVD/VCR. You might
see features referenced separately as DVD or VCR features, or you might see them
combined, depending on the feature.

Chapter 2: Using the Remote Control
Button Descriptions for DVD and VCR Modes
In addition to operating your DVD/VCR, the remote that came with it will operate most RCA, GE, and
Proscan TVs. However, this section only describes the buttons on the remote that you will use with your
DVD/VCR.
For descriptions of remote control buttons to be used with your TV (RCA, GE, and Proscan only), go to
the next page.

INFO Shows the status displays on screen of your RCA, GE, or
Proscan TV, or DVD/VCR (whichever component the remote is
set to control). Displays the on-screen Info Display when
playing DVD discs.
INPUT In VCR or TV mode, selects between the Video Input
Channels and the tuner. Video Input Channel refers to the
signal coming from the component connected to audio/
video input jacks on the DVD/VCR or TV.

Using the Remote Control
LOCK Locks the buttons on the front of the unit.
MENU Displays the on-screen menu system. (To see the VCR Main menu, press VCR and then MENU. To
see the DVD Main menu, press DVD and then MENU).
OK Selects the setting or menu that is highlighted.
ON•OFF Turns DVD/VCR on or off.
OPEN•CLOSE In DVD mode, opens and closes disc tray. In VCR mode, ejects a tape.
PAUSE Pauses playback or recording modes (in VCR mode). Press PAUSE again to return to active
playback or recording. When playing DVD discs, press two times to search frame by frame.
PLAY Plays a tape or DVD disc.
PLAY MODE In DVD mode, accesses Play Mode icon in the Info Display.
RECORD In VCR mode, starts record mode on tapes with the safety tab intact. Press repeatedly to set
a recording duration for the Express Recording feature.
REVERSE Rewinds the tape when the VCR is in stop mode. In DVD and VCR mode, searches backward
through a tape or disc during playback mode. In DVD mode, starts slow motion playback during play-
pause mode with each press of the button decreasing the slow-motion speed.
SEARCH In VCR mode, accesses Index search feature.
SPEED In VCR mode, selects tape speed.
STOP Stops the current DVD/VCR function (record, playback, rewind, etc). Also opens/closes the disc
tray when you press and hold. In order to see the DVD player menu, press the STOP button.
SUBTITLE In DVD mode, accesses the Subtitle part of the on-screen Info Display, and turns Subtitles on
and off (if subtitles are available on the disc you are playing).
TIMER In VCR mode, accesses the timer recording menu.
TITLE/GUIDE In DVD mode, accesses the DVD disc guide (if available).
TV•VCR Functions as a TV/VCR button in VCR mode
VCR Turns on the DVD/VCR and puts the remote control in VCR mode. Likewise, you can change to
DVD mode by pressing the DVD button.
ZOOM In DVD mode, enlarges the image on the screen so you can zoom in on details. To pan
horizontally and vertically while you’re zooming, press the arrow buttons on the remote.
Button description for TV function buttons
This remote operates most TVs that carry the RCA, GE, or Proscan brand. The following list (in
alphabetical order) provides basic information about how these buttons will operate when in TV mode.
(0-9) Number buttons Enter channel numbers.
CH +/- Changes channels.
GO BACK/RETURN Goes back to the last channel the TV was tuned to.
GUIDE Accesses the GUIDE Plus+ programming guide if the TV has that feature.
INPUT Tunes to the TV’s Video Input Channel(s). For more information about Video Input Channels, go
to page 62.

Using the Remote Control
MUTE Lowers the volume to minimum level. Press again to restore volume.
ON•OFF Turns off a compatible RCA, GE, or Proscan TV.
TV Turns on a compatible RCA, GE, or Proscan TV and puts the remote in TV mode.
VOL +/- Decreases and increases volume level.
Using the INPUT Button
Use the INPUT button to scroll through the available Video Input Channels (LINE1 and LINE2) and
regular broadcast signals. The Video Input Channels allow you to view images from a device connected
to the DVD/VCR (like a camcorder).
1. Press the remote control’s VCR button to enter VCR mode. Make sure that the DVD/VCR is turned
ON.
2. Press the remote control’s INPUT button to tune to the Video Input Channel. LINE1 represents the
rear A/V jacks and LINE2 represents the front A/V jacks).
3. To tune back to the broadcast signal you were previously watching through the DVD/VCR, press the
INPUT button again.

No matter which on-screen display you’re using (the DVD
player’s menu, the Info Display that appears during playback,
the VCR Main menu, or a disc’s menu), you’ll use the same
buttons on the remote control to move through the on-
screen display: the four arrow buttons and the OK button.
Use the arrow buttons on the remote to move through on-
screen menus in the direction of the arrow button (to go
right, press the right arrow button; to move left, press the
left arrow button, etc.). The arrow buttons are used to
highlight an option. Once highlighted, press the OK button
to select that menu option.

Chapter 3: Playing Discs
Regional Coding
Both the DVD/VCR and the discs are coded by region. These
regional codes must match in order for the disc to play. If
the codes don’t match, the disc won’t play. This player’s code
is region 1.
DVD+Rewritable
ALL means all regions. Other regions are: 2: Europe, the
Middle East, Rep. of South Africa, Japan - 3: Southeast
Asia,Taiwan - 4: Central America, South America, Australia,
Mexico, New Zealand - 5: Russian Federation, Africa (except
Egypt and Rep. of South Africa), India, Pakistan - 6: China.
Using Different Menus
This DVD player is capable of playing the
following types of discs: DVDs, audio CDs,
Video CDs, CDs with mp3 files, WMA files
(Windows Media Audio), and CDs with
JPEG files on them. Before you put a disc
in the player, make sure it is compatible.
Each disc is programmed with different features. There are
three separate types of menus that you can use to access
features:
•
The Disc menu – The Disc menu is part of each disc and
is separate from the DVD player’s menu. The contents of
each Disc menu vary according to how the disc was
authored and what features are included.
You can’t play the following types of
discs: Laserdiscs, CD-I, CD-ROM
(computer-only discs), DVD-ROM, discs
recorded using other broadcast standards
(i.e. PAL or SECAM), or CD-G discs.
The Disc menu is turned on and off (while the disc is
playing) with the MENU button on the remote.

The DVD player’s Info Display – The Info Display appears
as icons across the top of the screen when a disc is
playing. It can only be accessed while you are playing a
disc. It’s turned on and off with the INFO button on the
remote.
Note: Some discs may not be comptible
due to laser pickup and disc design.
The DVD player menu – The DVD player’s menu system is
accessed only when a disc isn’t playing. It appears
automatically when you press the STOP button on the
remote.
Remember: A feature will only work if the disc was
programmed with that feature. For example, if you choose
subtitles on the Info Display, the subtitles will only appear if
the disc was created with subtitles. If a menu or icon is
“grayed out” it means that item (or feature) isn’t available.

Turn on the TV and your DVD/VCR (press ON•OFF on the
remote or press the Power button on the DVD/VCR).
1. If necessary, tune the TV to its Video Input Channel (if
you need more information, go to page 62).
This is an example
of a one-sided disc.
2. Press the OPEN•CLOSE button (the disc tray opens).
3. Place a disc gently into the tray with the disc’s label
facing up (double-sided discs have content on both
sides, so you can place either side up).
4. Press the OPEN/CLOSE or PLAY button. The disc tray
closes. The DVD/VCR reads the disc’s table of contents,
and then one of three things happens depending on how
the disc was programmed:

• The disc starts playing.
• The disc menu appears on the screen. One of the
options will start disc play. Highlight that option and
press OK.
• The DVD player’s main menu appears on the screen.
Highlight the Play option and press OK.
When you stop playing a disc, the player remembers where
you stopped. When you start playing the disc again, the
DVD/VCR picks up where you left off unless the disc is
removed or the unit is unplugged, or if you press the STOP
button twice.
Search Options
To search a disc, you can use the FORWARD button or the REVERSE button. You can also utilize the
following search features:
Picture Scan
When you’re playing a disc, each time you press FORWARD or REVERSE, your DVD/VCR scans the disc
faster until you reach the fastest scan speed. To resume normal playback, press PLAY.
Freeze Frame and Frame Advance
While a disc is playing, press PAUSE to freeze the picture. To advance one frame at a time, press PAUSE
again (the on-screen icon changes from PAUSE to FRAME). Each time you press the FORWARD or
REVERSE button, the picture goes to the next (or previous) frame. To resume normal playback, press
PLAY.
Note: If you pause a DVD disc or VCD disc for a long period of time, the video will disappear from the screen. Press
any button on the remote to revert to the place on the disc where you paused playback.

Slow Motion (in Freeze Frame Mode)
While a disc is playing, press PAUSE. Press REVERSE or FORWARD (each time you press REVERSE or
FORWARD the slow motion will get even slower until you reach the slowest speed). To resume normal
playback, press PLAY.
Playback Options
Many of your DVD/VCR’s playback features are accessed through the Info Display (described on pages
20 through 26). Additionally, with some discs you can access playback features directly from the
remote control.
Chapter Advance
While a disc is playing, you can skip forward or backward a chapter or track at a time by pressing the
CH+ and/or CH- buttons (also labeled
and
).
Zoom
1. While you’re playing a disc, press ZOOM (the player zooms in on the image). Each time you press
ZOOM, the picture is magnified even more (until you get to the maximum zoom level). To resume
normal playback, press PLAY.
2. To see other parts of the picture when you’ve zoomed in on the image, press the up, down, left,
and/or right arrow buttons. This feature is called pan and scan.

Using the On-Screen Info Display
The Info Display appears across the top of the screen when you press the INFO button on the remote
while you’re playing a disc. Use the left and right arrow buttons to highlight different icons. Once an
icon is highlighted, follow the on-screen instructions, and use the up and down buttons on the remote
to scroll through the options.
You can only access the Info Display when you’re playing a disc. Also, the Info Display features are only
available if the disc was created with that particular feature. If one of the icons is “grayed out,” that
feature isn’t available for the disc you’re playing.
The invalid symbol appears on the screen when you press a button that doesn’t have any
function. To make the Info Display disappear from the screen, press INFO on the remote.

How to Navigate the Info Display
To access the Info Display, press the INFO button on the
remote while you’re playing a disc.
Arrow
buttons
Use the left and right arrow buttons on the remote to
highlight different icons. Once an icon is highlighted, follow
the on-screen instructions, and use the up or down arrow
buttons to scroll through options.

Time Display (all Info Displays)
This feature displays the time that has elapsed during
playback. For DVD discs, the time displayed refers to the
current title and acts as a Time Search feature. You can skip
right to any scene.
Hour
Seconds
Minutes
Highlight the Time Display icon, and use the number
buttons on the remote to enter the elapsed time you
want to go to. You must use two digits for each field. For
example, if you enter 01:35:12, playback will start 1
hour, 35 minutes, and 12 seconds into the title.
Note: For Audio CDs, the time displayed refers to the track that’s
playing.
Title/Track Icon (all Info Displays)
Some DVD discs contain more than one title. Each title is
divided into chapters. CDs are divided into separate tracks.
To select a title/track:
Highlight the Title/Track icon, and use the number
buttons on the remote to enter the title number (or track
number), and press OK, or press the up or down arrow
buttons to scroll through the titles/tracks.
Note: Many discs only have one title.
Chapter Icon (DVD Info Display)
A title can be divided into individual chapters (similar to
tracks on a CD). To skip to a specific chapter:
Highlight the Chapter icon, and use the number buttons
on the remote to enter the chapter number and press
OK, or press the up or down arrow buttons to scroll
through the chapters.
Shortcut
Note: The Chapter feature won’t work if the disc isn’t formatted
with separate chapters.
While you’re playing a disc, you can
use the CH +/- buttons to go to the
next chapter/ previous chapter.

Subtitles Icon (DVD Info Display)
By default, subtitles are off. To turn subtitles on:
Highlight the Subtitle icon, and press the up or down
arrow buttons to scroll through the available subtitle
languages (the subtitle language options appear in the
box at the bottom of the Info Display), then press OK.
Notes:
Changing the subtitle language with the Info Display will only
affect the disc you are currently playing. When the disc is
removed or the player is turned off, the subtitle language will
revert to the language setting specified through the DVD player’s
main menu.
If the disc doesn’t contain the language you want to use, the
disc’s default language is automatically selected.
Some discs are programmed to only allow you to access the
subtitle feature through the disc’s menu. During playback, press
MENU to access the disc’s menu.
Audio Language Icon (DVD Info Display)
If the disc was created with different language tracks
(recorded in different languages), you can change the
language while you’re playing the disc.
Highlight the Audio icon, and press the up or down
arrow buttons to scroll through the available languages
(the language options appear in the box at the bottom
of the Info Display), then press OK.
Shortcut
Press the AUDIO button, while the disc is
playing (the Info Display appears with
the Audio icon already highlighted).
Notes:
The language feature only works if the disc was created with
multiple language tracks. If the disc doesn’t contain the language
you selected, the disc will play in the default language.
When you choose an audio language during disc playback, you
only override the audio language setting in the DVD Player’s main
menu temporarily.
The audio language can also be changed through the DVD player
menu.

Play Mode Icon (DVD, CD Info Displays)
The Play Mode options available depend upon the type of
disc you’re playing. The default play mode (standard play)
plays the disc’s contents in the order in which the disc was
created (i.e., track 1 plays first, followed by track 2, etc.).
Play Mode Options
Repeat: DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs and mp3s.
Random Play: Audio CDs and mp3s (tracks play in random
order).
Program Play: DVDs, Audio CDs and mp3s (create your own
playlist by defining the order of the tracks in the DVD
Player’s Play Mode menu—page 38.)
Introscan: Audio CDs. Plays the first few seconds of each
track.
Repeat
By default the Repeat feature is Off. The options available
depend upon the type of disc you’re playing.

With DVD discs you can repeat the title, chapter, or use
AB repeat.
With Audio CDs you can repeat the disc, a track, or
create a program that plays repeatedly.
With mp3s you can repeat the disc, a track, or create a
program that plays repeatedly.
Repeating Discs, Titles, Chapters, or Tracks
Highlight the Play Mode icon, and press the up or down
arrow buttons to scroll through the available play mode
options (the options appear in the box at the bottom of
the Info Display), then press OK.
To turn off the Repeat feature, press the up or down
arrow button repeatedly until Play Mode: Standard
appears.

AB Repeat
AB Repeat lets you define a specific segment on the disc that you want to repeat. For example, you
might want to watch the dogfight in the movie Top Gun. To watch this scene over and over:
1. With the Play Mode icon highlighted, press the up or down arrow button until Repeat Mode: AB
appears. Press OK to set A point appears at the bottom of the Info Display. Press OK when the disc
gets to the beginning point of the segment (the A point) that you want to repeat.
2. Allow the disc to play to the end of the segment you want to repeat. Don’t fast forward — you
must let the disc play in standard playback mode to set the B point (the ending point of the
segment). Press OK to set the B point (the segment you marked will play repeatedly until you turn
off the Repeat feature).
3. To turn off the Repeat feature, press the up arrow button on the remote until Play Mode: Standard
appears at the bottom of the Info Display. Press OK.
Note: Repeat is also cancelled when you eject the disc.
Random (Audio CD and mp3)
1. With the Play Mode icon highlighted in the Info Display, press down arrow button until Play Mode:
Random appears in the text at the bottom of the Info Display. Press OK (the tracks start playing in
random order).
To switch back to Standard Playback, press the up or down arrow button repeatedly until Play Mode:
Standard appears in the text bar underneath the Info Display icons.
Note: The player defaults to Standard Playback whenever you put a new CD into the DVD player.
Program Play (DVD and Audio CD Info Displays)
The Program Play Mode (DVD, Audio CD and mp3) is only available after you set up a program through
the DVD Player’s menu. Go to page 38 for instructions.
IntroScan (Audio CD Info Display)
Use this feature to preview the first few seconds of each track on a CD.
After you’ve highlighted the Play Mode icon, press the up or down arrow button on the remote until
Play Mode: Introscan appears. If necessary, press the OK button (the first few seconds of each track
starts playing).

After Introscan previews all of the tracks, it stops.
If you want to play the track that Introscan is previewing, press the PLAY button (the current track
starts playing in its entirety).
•
To stop IntroScan, press the STOP button (the main menu appears).

Bookmark Icon (DVD Info Display)
The Bookmark feature lets you mark a point on the disc so
that when you turn the player off and back on (without
having ejected the disc), you can quickly start playing the
disc from a bookmarked point.
Creating a Bookmark
1. Highlight the Bookmark icon on the Info Display. Press OK (the Bookmark Banner appears).
2. Highlight an unused bookmark. When the disc reaches the scene you want to mark, press the OK
button on the remote (the bookmark icon changes to two icons side-by-side: an arrow and a trash
can).
To play the disc from the bookmarked scene, highlight the arrow (the international symbol for
playback) and press the OK button.
To delete the bookmark, highlight the trash can and press OK.
This is the Bookmark Banner.

3. To remove the Info Display and/or Bookmark Banner, press the INFO button on the remote.
Using a Bookmark
1. While you’re playing a disc, press the INFO button on the remote (the Info Display appears).
2. Press the right arrow button to highlight the Bookmark icon, and press OK (the Bookmark Banner
appears).
3. Use the arrow buttons on the remote to highlight the play arrow icon that’s next to the
bookmarked scene you want to activate.
4. Press OK (the disc starts playing from the bookmarked scene).

Clearing a Bookmark
The bookmarks are erased each time you remove a disc from
the player and/or when the power is turned off.
1. While you’re playing a disc, press the INFO button on the
remote (the Info Display appears).
2. Press the right arrow button to highlight the Bookmark
icon, and press OK (the Bookmark Banner appears).
3. Use the arrow buttons on the remote to highlight the
trashcan icon that’s next to the bookmarked scene you
want to delete, and press OK (the bookmark is cleared,
and the trashcan icon changes back to an unused
bookmark icon).

Changing the Camera Angle (DVD Info Display)
Some discs contain multiple angles of a particular scene or
sequence. If the disc only has one angle, this feature won’t
work. Currently, very few discs have this feature.
1. While a disc is playing, press ANGLE on the remote. If the
disc wasn’t created with multiple angles, (the invalid
symbol) appears. If the disc contains multiple angles, the
Angle icon appears with the current angle number and
the number of angles available. For example, 1/4
indicates that Angle 1 is displayed and there are 4
different angles available.
2. Press the up or down arrow button again to go to the
second camera angle. Press the arrow buttons again to
go to the third angle, etc.
3. To resume normal playback, scroll through the camera
angles until you get to Angle Off.
PBC - Playback Control (Video CD Info Display)
Playback Control functions allow you to interact with the
system via menus, search functions, or other typical
computer-like operations. Moreover, still pictures of high
resolution can be played if they are included on the disc.
1. While the Video CD is playing, press INFO (the Info
Display appears).
2. Highlight the PBC icon. Press the up or down arrow
buttons to toggle between on and off.

Playing mp3 and WMA music files and displaying JPEG files
mp3 is an audio file format which compresses recorded music. It was developed by Fraunhofer
Gesellschaft in collaboration with Thomson Inc. The main advantage of the mp3 format is that it means
CD-quality music tracks can be stored on a personal computer in user-friendly, compressed files.
WMA (Windows Media Audio) is another audio file format developed by Microsoft.
JPEG files are image files.
Note: The time taken for the contents of the disc to be displayed varies according to the size and number of JPEG
files actually on the disc. If nothing is displayed after a few minutes, it is likely that certain files are too large. Try
reducing the files’ resolution and write another disc.
Displaying JPEG files or playing mp3 or WMA files
Before inserting a disc, check that it is compatible with the player.
1. Open the tray by pressing the OPEN•CLOSE button.
2. Place the disc with the printed side facing up.
3. If the AutoPlay option in the Play Mode menu is enabled (see page 38), the disc’s contents are
displayed, otherwise press the PLAY button to display them.
4. Select a folder using the up and down arrow buttons on
the remote control, then press OK to display the list of
files or press PLAY to start playing all the files contained in
the folder.
5. Select a file using the arrow buttons, then press PLAY to
start playback.

7. When the player has played all the files the music or slide show stops and the disc’s contents
appear.

Playing JPEG and mp3 music files at the same time
You can display JPEG files while listening to mp3 music files recorded on the same disc. It is not
possible to play JPEG and WMA music files at the same time.
1. Insert the disc containing the two types of file in the player.
2. Select an image file using the arrow buttons, then press OK to confirm your selection. The name of
the folder where the file is located and the name of the file appear on the right in the “Current
selection” section.
3. Then select an mp3 music file using the arrow buttons, then press OK to confirm your selection. The
name of the folder where the file is located and the name of the file appear on the right in the
“Current selection” section.
Note: To delete your selection, press the CLEAR button.
4. Press the PLAY button to start playing the two files at the same time.
Note: You can also select a folder containing JPEG and mp3 files using the arrow buttons, then press PLAY. In this
case, the player starts playing the pictures and music at the same time beginning with the first file of each type.

The player starts the slide show with the JPEG file selected and proceeds by displaying all the
JPEG files in the same folder, and then all the JPEG files in the subfolders located in the same
folder. At the same time, the player plays the selected mp3 file, then all the mp3 files in the
same folder, and finally the mp3 files contained in the folders located at the same level as the
folder containing the file selected at the start.
Note: If the mp3 files are finished playing before the end of the slide show, the player starts playing the mp3 files
again until the slide show ends.
5. Press INFO to access the Info menu during simultaneous playback. You can change the slide show’s
projection speed.
6. During simultaneous playback you can use the ANGLE button to rotate the picture 90°. Use the

Chapter 4: VCR Features
VCR Basics
Once your initial settings are complete, you can begin using your DVD/VCR. In order to begin, you must
first understand some basic concepts.
Playing a tape
1. Tune the TV to your DVD/VCR viewing channel (03, 04, or the Video Input Channel).
2. Insert a tape in the DVD/VCR.

Press FORWARD or REVERSE to cue the tape to the desired position during Play mode.
To advance the tape 30 seconds at a time during Play mode, press the SEARCH button on the
remote control (each time you press SEARCH, 30 seconds is added to the amount of tape that
is scanned — up to 5 minutes).

Press PLAY (if necessary) to begin tape play.
Press PAUSE to stop action. For slow-motion playback, press FORWARD and/or REVERSE (while
picture is paused). To move one frame at a time, press FORWARD on the remote (while
paused).

Press CHANNEL +/- (or CH +/- on the remote) to remove any streaks from the picture, if
necessary.
Press STOP to stop playback.
Automatic Rewind
The DVD/VCR automatically rewinds the tape if it reaches the end of the tape during playback. While
rewinding, you can press the ON•OFF button (the DVD/VCR will turn off after it rewinds the tape). If
the tape has no safety tab, it will be ejected.
Tape Eject
Press the EJECT button on the DVD/VCR when stopped to eject the tape. You can also press and hold
the OPEN•CLOSE button on the remote control for three seconds.
Basic Recording
1. Set the tape speed by pressing the SPEED button on the remote control.
2. Press the RECORD button to begin recording.
3. Press the STOP button to halt recording.
If you just want to pause the recording for a short time (like during a commercial), press PAUSE
instead of STOP.
Check the Safety Tab
Make sure there is a tape in the DVD/VCR with its safety tab
in place. You cannot record on a tape if the safety tab has
been removed. If the safety tab is removed and you want to

record, simply cover the hole with adhesive tape.

VCR Features
Recording Features
Your DVD/VCR provides many ways to record programming. Basic recording is explained in detail on
page 29. The following recording techniques are also available.
•

Recording – lets you press one button to record a program.
Instant Timer Recording (ITR) – allows recording to start while a program is being watched. This
feature automatically stops recording after a designated period of time.
•
Timer Recording – program the DVD/VCR for a daily, weekly, or one-time recording which will
automatically start and stop at the times you set.
Instant Timer Recording (ITR)
Use ITR to quickly record the remaining portion of a program being watched. ITR is a great way to
capture the end of a sporting event that has run into overtime or a live broadcast that runs long. ITR
works in 30-minute increments. You can capture the last 30, 60, 90, etc. minutes of programming
(depending on tape length), up to 9 hours total.
To Activate ITR:
1. Turn on the DVD/VCR and tune it to the channel with the desired programming.
2. Insert a tape with its safety tab in place into the DVD/VCR. Make sure it is cued to record at the
proper starting point.
Note: To override the preferred tape speed setting, press the SPEED button on the remote control repeatedly to
toggle between SP and SLP choices.
3. Press the RECORD to start recording.
4. Repeatedly press RECORD to set up the recording duration.

Press RECORD until Instant Timer Record 0:00 appears.
Each time you press the RECORD button, 30 minutes is added.
The DVD/VCR automatically turns off after it has recorded the set amount of time.

VCR Features
Timer Recording
You can set up to 8 different TV programs to be recorded. Before a Timer Recording will work, the VCR
needs to be set up correctly.

DVD/VCR’s clock must be set correctly.
The timer indicator appears in the display when you turn off the DVD/VCR and a timer recording
has been set. The tape indicator flashes if there is no tape in the DVD/VCR when a timer recording
has been set and the unit is turned off.

For a cable box or satellite receiver, turn it on and tune it to the channel you want to record before
the recording is to begin. The channels will be controlled by the cable box or receiver.
Insert a tape with its safety tab in place and enough tape to record the program.
To Set Up a Timer Recording Program:
1. Press the MENU button to display the VCR Main Menu.

DVD/VCR.

Time Counter
The time counter shows the actual time used when recording or playing a tape. The time counter helps
locate the beginning or end of recorded events. It resets to 0:00:00 whenever a tape is ejected from
the DVD/VCR.
For example, if you record a 30–minute program at the beginning of a tape, rewind it, and then want
to go to the end of the first program to start another recording:
1. Press the INFO button twice to display only the time
counter.
2. Press the CLEAR button to reset the time counter to
0:00:00.
3. Press the remote control’s FORWARD button to advance
a tape until the time counter reads 0:30:00.

VCR Features
Index Search
The VCR has a VHS Index Search System that automatically records index marks
on the tape every time you start a recording. During playback you can locate the
program you want to play by the number of index marks or by scanning. The VCR
will search forward or reverse from the location you are at on the tape.
To Activate Index Search:
1. While playing back, press the STOP button to stop the tape.
2. Press the SEARCH button on the remote control (SCH_ _ appears on the
display on the front of the unit) .
3. If you want to search through a certain number of index marks, press two
number buttons to enter the number of marks you want to search. Press
CLEAR to correct an entry.
4. Press the FORWARD button to search forward or REVERSE to search in reverse.
The VCR will locate your index mark and begin playback. If you did not enter
a specific index number, the VCR will locate the next index mark and begin
playback.
5. Press STOP to stop Index Search.
Notes: Certain index marks may be missed by the VCR including:

VCR Features
Broadcast Type
You can select the type of audio signal the DVD/VCR receives and records. Choose
from STEREO, SAP, and MONO.
Press the right arrow button to choose the desired setting. STEREO is used for
normal or stereo broadcast recording. MONO is used if the signal is weak or the
sound is too noisy. SAP is used to record a Second Audio Program, such as a
bilingual program.
Audio Output
You can set how the audio is ouput to your TV.
STEREO is used for true separation of the sound to the left and right speakers.
LEFT is used when you want to hear the left channel sound from both speakers.
RIGHT is used when you want to hear the right channel sound from both
speakers.
VCR Output Channel
Note: This is feature is not included in the VCR menu system. It is done from the front panel
and is displayed on the front of the unit.
Use this option to change the VCR’s output channel. The default channel is 3. To
change the output channel to channel 4, follow the steps below.
1. Make sure the DVD/VCR is off (no indicators lit on the display).
2. Press and hold the CHANNEL + or - button on the front of the unit for 5
seconds (RF3 appears on the front of the DVD/VCR).
3. Press CHANNEL + or - again to change the output channel to 4 (RF4 appears).
4. To save the change, press the POWER button on the front of the unit.
Child Lock
You can lock the buttons on the front of the DVD/VCR to prevent children from
using them.
To lock the buttons:
Press the LOCK button on the remote (SAFE appears on the front of the unit and
flashes when a button on the front of the unit is pressed). Remember, the DVD/
VCR can still be controlled by the remote, so put it in a safe place.
To unlock the buttons:
Press the LOCK button again to unlock the buttons on the front of the DVD/VCR.

Chapter 5: DVD Menu System
The DVD Player Menu System
The DVD player menu system is not the same as the disc menu or the Info Display. The DVD player
menu comes up when there is no disc playing. If you are playing a disc, press STOP on the remote
control to stop playback and bring up the DVD player menu. If a screensaver is on the screen, press
STOP or CLEAR. (Remember that you have to put the remote in DVD mode by pressing the DVD button
if it’s in VCR mode.)
Use the arrow buttons on the remote to highlight different menu items. Use the OK button to select a
menu that is highlighted.
Throughout the menu system, text appears at the bottom of the screen to explain what to do.
To return to a previous menu, press the left arrow button.
The Play Menu
The Play menu doesn’t have submenus or options like the
other man menu options. Instead, the status changes: if
you’re playing a disc and access the main menu, the menu
appears as Resume Play; if you haven’t started playing the
disc, the title of the disc appears next to the Play menu.

Discs are formatted to play chapters (or tracks on audio CDs)

in a certain (standard) order. If you’d like to play chapters in
a different order, you can use the Play Mode menu. You
must have a disc in the player with the disc tray closed in
order to access all of the Play Mode items.
Note: All of the Play Mode options, expect for Program Play, can
be accessed during playback via the DVD player’s Info Display (see
page 20).
Start
The DVD Player’s default play mode is Start. The chapters
and tracks on a disc play in the order listed on the disc,
starting with chapter (track) 1.

Program Play
With this option, you choose the order in which the chapters
(or tracks) play.
1. Highlight Program Play, and press the OK button (the
Program Playlist screen appears). Follow the on-screen
instructions to create your program:
1a. DVD: select a title using the and buttons and press
the button to access the list of chapters. To select a
chapter, press the and buttons.
1b. Audio CD: select a track using the and buttons, or
select All to start playing all the tracks.

AutoPlay
You can set up the DVD Player so a disc automatically starts playing whenever the disc tray is closed.
Highlight AutoPlay and press OK (On appears next to the AutoPlay menu). To turn AutoPlay off, just
press OK again while AutoPlay is highlighted.
Note: AutoPlay isn’t available for mp3 discs (the mp3 menu will appear when you insert the disc).
The Parental Control Menu
You can set up ratings limits and lock your player in order
to control the type of content people watch on your DVD/
VCR. The padlock icon indicates whether the player is
locked or unlocked.
Locked: You need to enter the password in order to
play discs that have a higher rating than what
you’ve allowed. When the player is locked, nobody
can access the Parental Control menu without
entering the password.

Unlocked: No password required to play discs. Even
if you’ve set ratings limits, they won’t be enforced
when the player is unlocked.
Locking your DVD/VCR
1. If you’re playing a disc, press STOP (the DVD Player’s main menu appears).
2. Press the down arrow button until Parental Control is highlighted, and press OK (the Parental
Control menu items appear).
3. Since Lock is highlighted, just press the OK button on the remote (the Enter Password screen
appears).
4. Use the number buttons on the remote control to enter your password and press OK (Confirm
Password appears). Enter the same numbers you entered before and press OK (if necessary, press the
left arrow button to return to the previous menu).
Notes: Once the player is locked, you’ll need to enter the password every time you access the Parental Control menu.
The player is shipped without any rating limits set. You need to set Ratings Limits (go to page 41 for instructions) in
order for the player to prevent people from playing discs with certain ratings.

Unlocking your DVD/VCR
1. If you’re playing a disc, press STOP (the DVD Player’s
main menu appears).
2. Press the down arrow button until Parental Control is
highlighted, and press OK (the Enter Password screen
appears).
3. Use the number buttons to enter the password you
created, and press OK (the Parental Control menu items
appear).
4. Press the down arrow button until Unlock is highlighted,
and press OK. If asked, enter your password to confirm
that you want to unlock the player (if necessary, press
the left arrow button to return to the previous menu).
Changing Your Password
You can change your password, but the player must be
locked.
1. If a disc is playing, press STOP (the main menu appears).
2. Press the down arrow button until Parental Control is
highlighted, and press OK. If asked, enter your current
password (the Parental Control menu items appear).
3. Press the down arrow button to highlight Password, and
press OK (the Enter New Password screen appears).
4. Use the number buttons on the remote to enter the
four-digit number that you want to use as your new
password, and press OK (you will be prompted to enter
your new password again to confirm). Enter your
password, and press OK.
Resetting Your Password
If you forget your password, you can reset it by following the steps below.
1. If a disc is playing, press STOP (the main menu appears).
2. Enter 321 and press OK (the unit resets to the factory defaults and Factory Reset....Done appears.
3. Press ON•OFF to turn the unit off.
4. Turn it on again (the Language screen appears). Highlight your desired language and press OK.

DVD Menu System
Explanation of Rating Limits
The Rating Limits feature lets you determine what types of
discs can be played in the player, and what types of discs
will require a password to override the rating limit that
you’ve set. In the U.S., the ratings feature is based on the
ratings set up by the MPAA (Motion Pictures Association of
America) such as R, PG, G, etc.
The system ranks the ratings from 1 to 8 in order to
accommodate ratings systems used in other countries (1 is
considered material that is least offensive and 8 is
considered the most offensive).
Note: In order for the Ratings to be enforced, the DVD/VCR must
be locked and the disc you’re playing must contain a movie (or a
title) that is rated.
To Set Ratings for Rated Titles:
The Rating Limits menu enables you to block discs that
contain movies with a rating assigned to them (R, PG-13,
PG, G, etc.) from being played unless you enter the password
you created in the Password menu.
1. From the main menu, highlight Parental Control and
press OK (enter your password if asked).
2. Highlight Ratings Limits and press OK (the 8-level rating
list appears.
3. Use the up and down arrow buttons to move the bar to
the rating level you find acceptable.
Notes: Ratings that don’t require a password (free access) appear
under the bar. Ratings that require a password appear above the
bar.
4. Press OK.
5. To return to the main menu, press the left arrow button
until the main menu appears.

To Set Ratings for Unrated Titles:
Some discs contain titles that don’t have a rating assigned
to them. Sometimes, movies you might find the most
explicit are unrated. You can restrict access by requiring a
password for unrated titles.
1. From the main menu, highlight Parental Control and
press OK (enter your password if asked).
2. Highlight Unrated Titles and press OK (another screen
appears).
3. Press the down arrow button to highlight Password
Required, and press OK. Now your password will be
required to play unrated titles as long as you make sure
to lock the player.
4. To return to the main menu, press the left arrow button
until the main menu appears.
Note: You must lock the player in order for rating limits to be
enforced.

DVD Menu System
Display Menu
The Display menu contains the settings that affect how a disc’s content looks on your TV and the
brightness of the display that’s on the front of the DVD/VCR.
TV Image
The TV Image menu adjusts the way a movie appears on
your TV. Standard TVs are 4 x 3 format. Depending on the
type of television you have, you may want to adjust the
screen setting (also called the aspect ratio).
1. With the player on (no disc playing), press MENU (the
main menu appears). If a disc is playing, press STOP.
2. Use the up and down arrow buttons to highlight Display.
Press the OK button on the remote (the Display choices
appear).

3. Since TV Image is the first submenu, it’s already

4 x 3 Letterbox – Choose this setting if you want to see
movies in their original aspect ratio (height-to-width ratio).
You’ll see the entire frame of the movie, but it will take up a
smaller portion of the screen vertically. The movie might
appear with black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.
4 x 3 Standard – Choose this setting if you want the movie
to fill the entire screen of your TV. This might mean that
parts of the picture (the left and right edges) won’t be seen.
Most discs produced in a widescreen format can’t be
cropped in this fashion. This means the black bars will
appear at the top and the bottom of the screen.

DVD Menu System
16 x 9 Widescreen – Choose this setting if your DVD Player
is connected to a widescreen TV. If you choose this setting
and you don’t have a widescreen TV, the images on the
screen might appear distorted due to vertical compression. If
you play a disc recorded in 4 x 3 format on a widescreen TV,
the left and right sides of the screen will appear black.
Progressive Scan
You can change how the video signal is output to your TV as either progressive scan or interlaced.
1. With the player on (no disc playing), press MENU (the main menu appears). If a disc is playing, press
STOP.
2. Use the up and down arrow buttons to highlight Display. Press the OK button on the remote (the
Display choices appear).
3. Use the up and down arrow button to highlight Progressive Scan. Press the OK button (the
Progressive Scan options appear).
4. Use the OK button to toggle between Progressive Scan on or off.
Tip: You can also toggle progressive scan and interlace mode by pressing and holding the PAUSE button when a disc
is not playing.
Important: If you lose the picture signal when connected to your TV with component video cables, toggle the
progressive scan/interlace mode as mentioned above.
Sound Menu
The Sound menu lets you adjust the player’s settings to match the equipment you connected to your
DVD/VCR, and to use the DVD player’s Sound features.
Sound Logic
The Sound Logic feature compresses the dynamic range (quietest sound to loudest sound) of a disc’s
soundtrack to even out the range of volume.
1. From the Main Menu, (player on, no disc playing), highlight Sound and press the OK button on the
remote (the Sound options appear).
2. If Sound Logic isn’t already highlighted, press the up arrow button on the remote control to
highlight it and press OK (the Sound Logic options appear).
3. Use the up and down arrow buttons to highlight a choice and press the OK button:
Off - this is the default (Sound Logic is turned off).
On - the volume range is compressed (loud sounds are quieter and soft sounds are louder).
Note: The performance of the Sound Logic feature varies depending upon the equipment you have connected to
your DVD/VCR and also the audio format of the disc you’re playing.

Digital Output
If you connected your DVD/VCR to a receiver via the Digital Audio Out jacks (COAXIAL or OPTICAL) on
the back of the player, choose both Dolby Digital and DTS settings.
1. If the main menu isn’t on the screen, press the STOP button (the main menu appears).
2. Use the up and down arrow buttons to highlight Sound. Press OK.
3. Highlight the Digital Output menu. Press OK (the options appear).
4. Highlight your selection. Press OK to select.
5. Press the left arrow button to return to the Sound menu or press MENU to exit the menu system.
Note: If you choose the DTS setting and your receiver, decoder, or disc doesn’t support the DTS format, you won’t
hear any audio.

DVD Menu System
Notes:
Discs are created differently. The DVD player can’t override some language preferences. If a disc’s software was
created to play the movie (title) in a preferred language, the preference you set might be ignored.
Also, if the language isn’t available on the movie you’re playing, the disc’s default language will be chosen. You must
turn on the Subtitle feature in order for them to appear when you’re playing a disc. If the disc wasn’t created with
subtitles, you won’t be able to use the Subtitle feature.
If the disc wasn’t created with the Subtitle language you chose in the Subtitles menu, the discs default subtitle
language will be chosen.
Child Lock
You can lock the buttons on the front of the DVD/VCR to prevent children from using them.
To lock the buttons:
Press the LOCK button on the remote (SAFE appears on the front of the unit and flashes when a button
on the front of the unit is pressed). Remember, the DVD/VCR can still be controlled by the remote, so
put it in a safe place.
To unlock the buttons:
Press the LOCK button again to unlock the buttons on the front of the DVD/VCR.

Most problems you encounter with your product can be corrected by consulting the following
troubleshooting list.
Note: If you prefer, we can provide you with the name of an Authorized Service Representative who will visit your

General Problems
Player won’t work
•
Try unplugging the AC power cord and plugging it back in.
No power
•

Plug in the DVD/VCR. Make sure both ends of the AC power cord are securely plugged into the
player and into an AC outlet.
Make sure the DVD/VCR isn’t plugged into an outlet controlled by a light switch.
Player turns off automatically
•
The power automatically turns off after the player has been in stop mode for approximately 30
minutes. Turn power back on.
No picture
•

Turn your TV to its Video Input Channel (go to page 62).
Turn on the TV.
Make sure your player is connected properly.
If you’re using component video cables to connect to your TV, toggle the progressive scan/interlace
mode (see page 44).
No sound or distorted sound

Make sure your player is connected properly. Make sure all cables are securely inserted into the
appropriate jacks.

You may need to readjust the Digital Output setting (from the Sound menu). Go to page 45. If you
selected DTS and your DVD/VCR isn’t connected to a DTS compatible decoder or receiver, either you
won’t hear any audio, or it will be distorted. Also, if you’ve connected a DTS compatible receiver or
decoder and chose the correct setting in the Digital Output menu, and the disc doesn’t support the
DTS audio format, you won’t hear any audio or you’ll hear distorted audio.

Turn your TV to its Video Input Channel (go to page 62).
Sound is muted when you’re using search features (fast forward, reverse, frame advance, etc.).
If you connected an audio receiver to your DVD/VCR, make sure you chose the correct input setting

Remote control won’t work
•
You might be in the wrong mode. To operate the DVD functions of your DVD/VCR, press DVD on the
remote before you press any other buttons. To operate the VCR, press the VCR button first. If you’re
operating the TV, press the TV button first, etc. (this remote operates most RCA, GE, and Proscan
TVs).
•
Check battery installation—the direction on the + and - on the batteries must match the
information in the battery compartment cover.
•

Insert new batteries in the remote.
Operate the remote control at a distance of no more than 20 feet.
Remove any obstacles between the remote and the DVD/VCR or other component. If your DVD/VCR
is in an entertainment cabinet, the glass doors might obstruct the remote control from operating
the unit. Open the doors.

Reset the remote — remove the batteries; press and hold the 1 button for 60 seconds; replace the
batteries and try the remote again.
General DVD Problems
Disc won’t play
•
Insert a disc with the label side facing up.
•
Check the type of disc you put into the player. This player only plays DVD video discs, DVD audio
discs, Video CDs, CDs with mp3 files, discs with WMA files and/or JPEG files on the them, and audio
CDs.
•

If you’re trying to play a disc with JPEG files on it, the player might not read the disc if it has larger
files on it.
Both the player and the disc are coded by region. If the regional codes don’t match, the disc cannot
be played. This player is Region No. 1.
Play starts, but then stops immediately
•
The disc is dirty. Clean it.
•
Condensation has formed. Allow player to dry out.
Can’t advance through a movie
•
You can’t advance through the opening credits and warning information that appear at the
beginning of movies because the disc is programmed to prohibit that action.
The invalid icon appears on screen
The feature or action cannot be completed at this time for one of the following reasons:
• The disc’s software restricts it.
• The disc’s software doesn’t support that feature (e.g., angles).
• The feature is not available at the moment.
• You’ve requested a title or chapter number that is out of range.

The disc might be damaged. Try another disc.

It is normal for some distortion to appear while scanning.

•
Your player is equipped with a screen saver that appears on the TV after your player has been idle
for several minutes. To make it disappear, press STOP or CLEAR on the remote.
Subtitle and/or audio language is not the one selected from the initial setting
•
If the subtitle and/or audio language does not exist on the disc, the initial settings will not be seen/
heard. The disc’s priority language is selected instead. Set the subtitle and/or audio language
manually through the Info Display or the player menu.
The menu is displayed in a foreign language
•
The Language menu (Player Menus) is set to that language. Go to Languages (In Spanish, shown as
Idiomas; in French, as Langues) in the main DVD player menu and select the Player Menus option
(In Spanish, shown as Menús del Lector; in French, as Menus Lecteur) Highlight the language you
prefer, and press OK.
Play doesn’t begin
•
The rating of the title on the disc exceeds the rating limit set in the Ratings Limits menu. Unlock
the player and/or change the rating limit in those menus.
No forward or reverse scan
•
Some discs have sections that prohibit rapid scanning, or title and chapter skip.
•
If you’re trying to skip through the warning information and credits at the beginning of a movie,
you won’t be able to. This part of the movie is often programmed to prohibit skipping through it.
Desired angle cannot be changed
•
Most discs don’t have the multi-camera angle system, and some discs only have multiple angles
during certain parts of the movie.
Picture is too tall and thin
•
Change the aspect ratio: go to the main menu, select Display, select TV Image. Go to page 43 for
more information.
Picture is too short and wide
•
Change the aspect ratio: go to the main menu, select Display, select TV Image. Go to page 43 for
more information.

won’t be able to eject the disc during this time. Wait 15 seconds and try again.
I get an “Incompatible file” message when I try to play JPEG files

Some JPEG files might be too large to be displayed, or a large file is blocking the player from
displaying all the other JPEG files on the disc.
I forgot my password

You need to reset the unit to its factory defaults to reset the password and enter a new one. See

Don’t move the player while a disc is being played. The disc may get scratched or broken, and the

Formation of Condensation

Due to sharp changes in temperature and humidity, condensation may form if warm air comes in
contact with any cold parts inside the player.
When condensation forms inside the player, the player may not operate correctly. If this occurs,
leave the player at room temperature until the inside of the player becomes dry and operational.
If condensation forms on a disc, wipe the disc with a soft, dry cloth by moving the cloth from the
center hole toward the outer edge.
Handling Discs
• Don’t touch the disc’s signal surfaces. Hold by the edges or by one edge and the hole in the center.
• Don’t affix labels or adhesive tape to label surfaces. Don’t scratch or damage the label.
• Do not use damaged (cracked or warped) discs.
Cleaning Discs

Dirty discs can cause reduced video and audio performance. Always keep discs clean by wiping
them gently with a soft cloth from the inner edge toward the outer perimeter.
If a disc becomes very dirty, wet a soft cloth in water, wring it out well. Wipe the dirt away gently,
and remove any water drops with a dry cloth.
Do not use record-cleaning sprays or anti-static agents on discs. Also, never clean the discs with
benzene, thinner, or other volatile solvents which may cause damage to the disc surface.

Description of Jacks (from left to right)
S-VIDEO OUT – If your TV has an S-VIDEO jack, connect an S-Video cable to the DVD/VCR’s S-
VIDEO jack and to the TV’s S-Video jack to achieve better picture quality than using the VIDEO jack.
S-Video only carries the picture, so you must connect the audio cables, as well. This connection is
only for DVD signal. For the VCR signal, you must also connect the standard video cable.
VCR IN (AUDIO/VIDEO) – If you are using color-coded red, yellow and white RCA cables, connect
these jacks to a video input component, such as a video game system or camcorder.
DVD/VCR OUT (AUDIO/VIDEO) – If you are using color-coded red, yellow and white RCA cables,
connect these jacks to the corresponding jacks on your TV.
COMPONENT VIDEO OUT (Y, Pb, Pr) – Use these jacks to connect to a TV with component video
input jacks. Unlike a single video input, component video maintains the video signal as three
separate signals through these three jacks. This connection provides optimum quality. To ensure
maximum picture quality, use three video-grade cables for the Y, Pb, and Pr connections. It is
essential to match the color-coded connectors with a compatible TV. This connection is only for
DVD signal. For the VCR signal, you must also connect the standard video cable.
AUDIO OUT— Use these jacks to connect your DVD/VCR to an audio/video receiver.
DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (OPTICAL and COAXIAL)
Use one of these jacks to connect your DVD/VCR to a receiver or decoder with Dolby Digital or DTS
capability. Some receivers have either the COAXIAL or OPTICAL type of Digital Audio Input jack, and
some have both. Under most conditions, optical and coaxial connections work equally well — the
only difference is the type of cable you connect to the jack.
If you want to use a less expensive cable, connect a coaxial cable to the COAXIAL jack if your
receiver has a COAXIAL input jack. Rarely, but sometimes, coaxial digital cables — especially long
ones, pick up radio frequency (RF) interference from household appliances, nearby power lines, and/
or broadcast towers.

Explanation of Input Jacks and Cables
This section describes the jacks and cables you can use to make connections (only audio/video cables
are packed with your DVD/VCR — you can purchase cables by calling 1-800-338-0376, details are on
to connect your DVD/VCR to your TV depending upon the cables you have and the jacks that are on the
back of your TV.
Different jacks and cables provide a different level of performance. It’s important to remember, we’re
talking about degrees of picture improvement for comparison. If your TV has Component jacks (Y, Pb,
Pr), S-VIDEO, and composite video (often color-coded yellow and grouped with Audio Left and Right
jacks that are white and red); Component (Y, Pb, Pr), would be considered excellent, S-Video would be
very good, and the composite video jack (yellow) would be considered good.
Component Video (Y, Pb, Pr) Jacks and Cables
The Y, Pb, Pr jacks provide optimum picture quality because the video is separated into three signals
(two signals are dedicated to the color portion of the image, and the other signal is dedicated to the
black and white part of the image).
To ensure maximum picture quality, use three video-grade cables for the connection. There are bundled
component video cables sold that are color-coded to match the Y, Pb, Pr jacks (red, green, and blue).
Component Video Input jacks are usually found on Digital Televisions (HDTV).
Note: Also, remember to connect the left and right audio cables because the Y, Pb, Pr jacks and cables carry only the
picture signal, not the sound.
S-Video Jacks and Cables
The S-Video (separate video) jack provides better picture quality than a composite video jack
(sometimes labeled VIDEO and color-coded yellow) because S-Video keeps the color (chrominance, also
called chroma) part of the signal separate from the black and white (luminance) part of the picture.
S-Video cables are designed to keep the color information separated. If your TV has an S-VIDEO jack,
connect the DVD Player to the TV with an S-Video cable (not provided) for a better quality picture.
Note: Remember to connect the left and right audio cables because the S-Video cable carries only the picture signal,
not the sound.
Audio/Video Jacks and Cables (RCA-type)
Audio
These jacks are used to send the audio from the disc you’re playing in the DVD/VCR to the TV. The
audio jacks and cables are often color-coded (red for right audio, and white for left audio). You must
connect audio cables to the AUDIO L and R jacks on the DVD/VCR and the corresponding Audio
Input Jacks on the TV no matter which Video jack you connect (VIDEO; S-VIDEO; Y, Pb, Pr)
Note: If your component has only one input for audio (mono), connect it to the left (white L/Mono) audio jack on
the TV and don’t connect the right audio part of the cable.
Video
The basic Video jack (usually color-coded yellow) jack is also referred to as composite video.
Composite video doesn’t keep color information separated (like S-Video), but it’s better than the
video quality you get from an RF coaxial cable (the type used to plug the cable feed into a TV).

How to find your TV’s Video Input Channel
In order to see what’s playing on your DVD/VCR, you need to tune the TV to the Video Input
Channel that corresponds to the jacks you used to hook up the unit to the TV. The Video Input
Channel(s) varies for different brands and different models of TVs. Below are some things to try.

Consult the Owner’s Manual that came with your TV.
If you can’t find the information in the manual, or can’t find the manual, review the following list
of ways to access Video Input Channels on TVs.
• There might be a button on the TV’s remote control that accesses the Video Input Channel (see
table below for examples).
• You might select the Video Input Channel from the TV’s menu system.
• You might tune to it by pressing a specific channel number (see table below)
• Press the Channel up and/or down buttons on the TV’s remote control (sometimes the Video Input
