• Install all batteries correctly, with + and - aligned as marked

on the unit.

• Do not mix batteries (old/new, carbon/alkaline, etc.).

• Remove batteries when the unit is not used for a long

time.

14. Outdoor Antenna Grounding – If an outside antenna or

cable system is connected to the product, be sure the

antenna or cable system is grounded so as to provide some

protection against voltage surges and built-up static charges.

Article 810 of the National Electrical Code,ANSI/NFPA 70,

provides information with regard to proper grounding of the

mast and supporting structure, grounding of the lead-in wire

to an antenna discharge unit, size of grounding conductors,

location of antenna-discharge unit, connection to grounding

electrodes, and requirements for the grounding electrode.

15. Lightning – For added protection for this product during a

lightning storm, or when it is left unattended and unused for

long periods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet and

disconnect the antenna or cable system.This will prevent

damage to the product due to lightning and power-line

surges.

Welcome!

This DigitalVideo Disc Player will allow you to enjoy better picture quality, clearer sound, and endless

playback features on DigitalVideo Discs (DVDs). Expanding technology allows you to add options to your

viewing - watch a director’s cut of a movie, listen to the producer’s comments, or play your favorite scene

repeatedly. Hear a movie in different languages, or listen only to the soundtrack.The possibilities are limited

only by your choices and the materials available on the DVD.

We hope you enjoy this DVD Player and learn to use its features.To get the most from the DVD Player,

read this manual carefully. It will describe how you can access these features.

Environmental Information

Your system has materials that can be recycled and reused if disassembled by a specialized company. Please

observe the local regulations regarding the disposal of packaging materials, exhausted batteries, and old

equipment.

Safety Information

● Do not expose the system to excessive moisture, rain, sand, heat, or humidity.

● Place the DVD Player on a firm, flat surface.

● Keep the DVD Player away from domestic heating equipment and direct sunlight.

● When placing the DVD Player in a cabinet, allow about one inch of space all around the DVD Player for

ventilation. Leave enough room in front of the DVD Player for the disc tray to open completely.

● If the DVD Player is brought directly from a cold to a warm location, or is placed in a very damp room,

moisture may condense on the lens inside the DVD Player. If this occurs, the DVD Player will not

operate normally. Leave the power on for about one hour with no disc in the DVD Player until normal

playback is possible.

● The mechanical parts of the Player contain self-lubricating bearings and must not be oiled or lubricated.

● When the DVD Player is turned off, it is still consuming some power.To disconnect the system from

the power supply completely, remove the AC power plug from the power outlet.

● Always keep the disc tray closed to avoid dust on the lens.

Cleaning Discs

● When a Disc becomes dirty, clean it with a cleaning cloth.Wipe the Disc from the center to the edge

in a straight line. Do not wipe the Disc in a circular pattern.

● Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner, commercially available cleaners, or anti-static spray

intended for analog discs.

Playable Discs

This DVD Player will play various types of Discs. Look for these logos on your Discs to determine

whether the Disc will play on this Player.

DVD (DigitalVideo Disc)

Audio CD (Compact Disc Digital Audio)

Video CD and SuperVideo CD

CD-R (CD-Recordable) and CD-RW (CD-Rewritable)

Finalize CD-Rs when you record them. Otherwise, you cannot play them

on this Player.

Recordable

ReWritable

DVD+R (DVD + Recordable) and DVD+RW (DVD + Rewritable)

Finalize these Discs when you record them. Otherwise, you cannot play them

on this DVD Player.

Region Codes and Color Systems

DVDs must meet the requirements for Region Codes and Color Systems before you can use them

with the DVD Player. DVDs must be labeled for ALL regions or for Region 1 in order to play on

this DVD Player.You cannot play Discs that are labeled for other regions.These symbols must appear

on your DVDs, or you cannot play the DVD in this Player.

The number inside the globe refers to a region of the world. Region 1 represents the United States,

Canada, upper regions of North America, Bermuda, the U.S.Virgin Islands, and small regions near

Australia.

Furthermore, recordings are made according to different color systems throughout the world.The

most common color systems are NTSC (which is used primarily in the United States and North

America), PAL, and SECAM.

This DVD Player is compatible with NTSC and PAL. Make sure the Discs you play were recorded in

NTSC or PAL and your TV is NTSC or PAL compatible.You must set the DVD Player’s TV TYPE to

match your TV and your DVDs. Details are on page 38. The color system of the DVD may appear on

the DVD or on the Disc case.

DVD Player Upgrades

If a DVD does not play properly, please contact Philips at 1-800-531-0039 for assistance. Due to the

inconsistency of Disc formats provided by various Disc manufacturers, your DVD Player may require a

playability enhancement.As DVD technology has advanced, these enhancements have become both

common and easy to complete.

8 General Information

Battery Installation

Remove the battery compartment lid on the rear of the

remote control by pressing in the tab, then lifting off the lid.

Place two AA batteries inside the battery compartment

with their and ends aligned as indicated. Do not mix old

–

and new batteries or different types of batteries (standard, alkaline,

etc.).

Replace the battery compartment lid.

Using the Remote Control

When using the remote control to operate the DVD Player, aim the

remote toward the front of the Player (not toward the TV).

When referring to this manual, remember...

The feature is available on some DigitalVideo Discs.

DVD

The feature is available on some Audio Compact Discs.

VIDEO CD

The feature is available on someVideo Compact Discs or

SuperVideo CDs.

DVD Disc Menus...

Some explanations in this manual describe the DVD Disc Menus, which vary

among DVDs. Movie producers set these menus, and not all DVDs have

menus. If the DVD has a menu, access the Disc Menu by pressing the DISC

MENU button on the remote control. Details are on page 20.

DVD Player Menus...

Some instructions explain how to use the DVD Player’s Setup menu to set

features of the Player or the Disc.You get to the Setup Menu by pressing

SYSTEM MENU on the remote control. Even if a feature is set in the

Player’s menu, it will not be available if the current Disc does not include

that feature.

Available Disc Features...

Features in this manual may not be available on every Disc. If the feature is

not available, you cannot use the DVD Player to make the feature available.

The л will appear in the top left corner of the TV screen if you try to

access a feature that is not available. For example, the feature may not be

available at the present time. Some features are only available during

playback, while other items can be accessed only when play is stopped.Try

stopping or starting playback, then try the feature again.

Determining the best possible connection...

The capabilities of your existing equipment, especially your TV, will determine your connection possibilities.

However, the following guidelines describe which options provide the best picture and sound quality.

ComponentVideo provides the best picture quality. Details are on page 13.

If your TV accepts Progressive Scan through the ComponentVideo connection, set

PROGRESSIVE to ON at the Player. Details are on page 38.

S-Video provides excellent picture quality. Details are on page 12.

CompositeVideo (a yellowVideo jack) provides good picture quality. Details are on page 11.

YourTV may have only an RF-style jack, usually labeled Antenna In or 75 ohm or

RF In.You will need an RF modulator in order to view the DVD Player at yourTV.

Details are on page 10.

Digital audio connections provide the clearest sound, but you must have a digital stereo

receiver. Connect the DVD Player’s COAXIAL digital audio out jack to your Stereo for the

best sound quality. Details are on page 15.

If digital connections are not possible, connect the DVD Player’s red and white AUDIO OUT

jacks to the Audio In jacks of your Stereo,TV, or RF modulator. Details are on pages 10-14.

Before you begin...

Refer to the manuals of your TV, Stereo, or other equipment as necessary. Note the style of jacks and

connectors on the other equipment. Determine how to choose different Audio andVideo In

channels/sources on your other equipment so you can see and hear the DVD Player on the TV, Stereo,

etc.

Disconnect all equipment from the power outlets. Connect the equipment to the power outlets only

after you have finished hooking up everything. Never make or change connections with equipment

connected to the power outlet.

Remember...

Connect the DVD Player directly to the TV. For example, do not connect the DVD Player to aVCR,

then connect theVCR to a TV.This type of connection may distort the picture and sound.Also, your

VCR might have the copy protection system, which could distort the DVD image or prevent playback

of some Discs.

Set the TV to the correctVideo In channel. Such channels may be called AUX or AUXILIARY IN,

AUDIO/VIDEO or A/V IN, EXT1 or EXT2 or External In, etc.These channels are often near channel

00. See your TV manual for details. Go to your lowest TV channel (01 or 02) and change TV channels

downward until you see the DVD screen saver on the TV. Or, your TV’s remote may have a button or

switch that selectsVideo In channels. Check your TV manual for details.

If you are using an RF modulator, set the TV to channel 3 or 4.

Set the Stereo to the correct channel or “source” mode.

Do not connect the DVD Player’s AUDIO OUT jacks to the PHONO IN jack of your Stereo.

You only need one audio connection and one video connection between the DVD Player and your TV

and/or Stereo. So, you will not use all the jacks on the DVD Player.

Antenna or Cable TV Signal

Before you begin, make sure you have an RF modulator and extra RF coaxial cables.

These are not supplied with the Player, but are available from Philips or most

consumer electronics retailers.

Connect the supplied video cable (which has yellow markings) to the Player’s yellow

VIDEO (VIDEO OUT) jack. Connect the other end of the cable to the VIDEO IN

jack on the RF modulator. TheVIDEO IN jack on the RF modulator is usually yellow and

might be labelledVIDEO, CVBS, COMPOSITE, or BASEBAND.

Connect the supplied audio cable (which has red and white markings) to the

Player’s AUDIO OUT (left and right) jacks.

Connect the other ends of the audio cable to the AUDIO IN jacks on the RF

modulator. Audio jacks on the RF modulator usually are red (right) and white (left). Match the

cable colors to the jack colors.

You probably already have an Antenna or Cable TV signal connected to the ANTENNA IN jack

on your TV. Disconnect it now from theTV. Reconnect the Antenna or CableTV

signal to the ANTENNA IN jack on your RF modulator.

Connect an RF coaxial cable (not supplied) to the RF OUT,ANTENNA OUT, orTO

TV jack on the RF modulator. The RF OUT jack may be labelled differently among different

brands. Refer to the instructions provided with your RF modulator. Connect the other end of

the same RF coaxial cable to the ANTENNA IN or RF IN jack on yourTelevision.

Your RF Modulator should have a Channel 3/4 switch.The setting of this switch determines the

TV channel on which you will watch materials playing on the DVD Player.

Set the RF Modulator’s Channel 3/4 switch to either 3 or 4, whicheverTV channel is

least used in your area. If your RF modulator has a Modulator/Antenna switch, set it

accordingly. Refer to the instructions that came with the RF Modulator.

Connect the power cords of all the equipment to a power outlet.

Turn on yourTV and choose channel 3 or 4. Choose the same channel to which you set

the RF Modulator’s Channel 3/4 switch.

Turn on the DVD Player by pressing STANDBY-ON . You should see the Player’s blue

DVD screen on the TV.

There are many playback features and options available on Discs.After

familiarizing yourself with the DVD Player as described on pages 17-19, see

pages 20 and following to try additional features.

Press STANDBY-ON

to turn on the DVD

Player. Turn on yourTV. Set it to the correctVideo In

channel. You should see the blue DVD screen on the TV.

Press OPEN/CLOSE / to open the disc tray.

Load your Disc in the tray, with the label facing up. If the Disc

(DVD) is two-sided, make sure the label of the side you want to play

is facing up.

Press OPEN/CLOSE / again to close the tray.

Play may start automatically. If not:

• If you are playing a DVD, a Disc menu may appear. If the Title or

Chapter selections are numbered, press a Number button to select

an item. Or, press 341 2 to select an item, then press OK. Playback

will begin. Or, follow the on-screen instructions as detailed in the

DVD Disc menu.

• If you are playing an Audio CD, press PLAY 3to start play.

• If aVideo CD has Playback Control, press DISC MENU to access

its menu while play is stopped. Or, press RETURN/TITLE to see the

menu during playback. Press the Previous 4, Next ¢, 3, 4, 1,

2, or Number buttons to select an item, then press OK. Follow the

instructions provided by theVideo CD. Not allVideo CDs have

Playback Control. See the Disc case or menus for details.

Helpful Hints

To stop play at any time, press STOP 7.

• If the Disc is locked by Parental

controls, you must enter your

password or unlock the Disc.

• DVDs have a region code.This

Player will play only DVDs of

Region 1 or ALL. Details are on

page seven.

• If there is no activity at the Player

or its remote for 15 minutes, the

Player will turn itself off. Press

STANDBY-ON y on the Player

or POWER y or PLAY 2on the

remote to turn on the Player.

If you press STOP 7only once, play will resume at the same point if

you press PLAY 3later to restart play.This is known as the Resume

feature.

Resume applies to the last five Discs. Press PLAY 3immediately

after inserting the Disc in the Player (while LOADING shows on the

TV screen). RESUME PLAY will appear on the TV screen briefly.

If you press STOP 7more than once to stop playback, play will start

at the beginning of the Disc again if you press PLAY 3later to

restart playback.

Press DISC MENU during DVD playback.

The main Disc menu (or Root menu) will appear.The menu may list

camera angles, spoken language and subtitle options, and Chapters

for the Title.

Or, if the currentTitle has a specificTitle menu, press the

RETURN/TITLE button to access theTitle menu. Title menus

are not available on all Discs.

Press 341 2 to select items in the menu, then press OK.

Continue until you set up all the features you want or until playback

begins. If Chapters or options are numbered, press the appropriate

Number button to select the item. Some DVDs may not allow you

to operate the Disc menu this way. Follow the instructions on the

Disc.

You can reduce or enlarge the video image during playback.

Press ZOOM repeatedly during Disc playback to make the

picture two, three, or four times larger. Or, keep pressing ZOOM to

reduce the picture to 1/2, 1/3, or 1/4 its normal size.

Press 341 2 to move around in the enlarged picture. The

blue box within a larger gray box that appears during zoomed play

indicates the position of the zoomed area within the overall picture.

To return the picture to regular size, press ZOOM until the

picture returns to its normal size.

Camera Angle

Some DVDs include scenes recorded from different angles.To watch

segments from a different angle, follow these steps.The DVD must have

multiple angles available. Check the DVD Disc case or Disc menu for

details and availability.

During DVD playback, press the ANGLE button repeatedly

to select a different angle.

In a few seconds, playback changes to the selected angle. If multiple

angles are not available, л may appear in the top left corner of the

TV screen when you press ANGLE.

• Zooming may not be possible

on all DVDs.

• Zooming is not available on

DVDs that have the PAL color

• You also can change Angles in

During Disc playback, press REPEAT to choose a Repeat

option. Depending on the type of Disc, you may choose to play the

Chapter, Track, Title, or ALL (Disc) repeatedly. Or, continue to press

REPEAT to choose SHUFFLE or SHUFFLE REPEAT.The Tracks,

Chapters, and/or Titles will play in random order (SHUFFLE) instead

of the order recorded (1, 2, 3, etc.). If you choose SHUFFLE REPEAT,

all the Tracks, Chapters, and/or Titles will play in random order

repeatedly.

Repeat A-B

You also may set the Player to play only a specific portion of a Disc

repeatedly. Follow these steps.

Press PLAY B to start Disc playback.

When the Disc reaches the point at which you want

repeated playback to begin, press REPEAT A-B.

When the Disc reaches the point at which you want to end

the segment, press REPEAT A-B again. The segment will begin

playing repeatedly.

On a DVD, make sure the entire A-B segment is within a single Title.

On aVideo CD or Audio CD, the A-B segment should be within a

single Track. If you do not enter the B setting before the end of the

Title or Track is reached, Repeat A-B will be cancelled.

Some DVDs are recorded in multiple languages; some may have extra audio

options such as a director’s commentary or a music soundtrack.You can

choose the language or the soundtrack that you want to hear by adjusting

AUDIO in the PREFERENCE PAGE.To do so, follow the steps below.

The easiest way to choose a different audio language or soundtrack is to

press the AUDIO button on the remote during DVD playback.The audio

will change to the language or soundtrack you select.

Press STOP 7 twice to stop DVD playback.

Some DVDs include subtitles. Choose the language you want for available

subtitles by adjusting SUBTITLE in the PREFERENCE PAGE.To do so, follow

language you select.

28 Parental Password

DVD

The PARENTAL feature limits viewing of DVDs. You need a password to

change the PARENTAL settings or to play Locked Discs.To set your

password, follow the steps below.

To adjust the PARENTAL level so DVDs cannot play if they exceed that

level, see page 30.

To prevent specific DVDs from playing, regardless of how you set the

PARENTAL level, see page 29.

Press SYSTEM MENU.

at the top of the menu, then press OK or 4.

Press 2 to highlight CHANGE in green.Then press

OK.

Press the Number buttons to enter your old six-digit

password in the OLD PASSWORD box. (If this is the first time

you have set a password, you may not have to enter an OLD

PASSWORD.The numbers you enter may go into the NEW

PASSWORD box instead.) The box beside NEW PASSWORD will

be selected next automatically. Press the Number buttons to

enter a new six-digit password of your choice. The box beside

CONFIRM PWD will be selected next automatically. Press the

Number buttons to enter the same new six-digit password

you just entered for the NEW PASSWORD.

Helpful Hints

• The default or factory preset

password is 842100. You can

use it to play a Locked Disc or

enter it as the old password.

The 842100 password is

acceptable even after you set

your own personal password.

• Philips denies any liability

associated with unintended

watching of Discs. Make sure

your Discs play according to your

PARENTAL settings before you

allow children access to the

Player.

Press OK to save the new password. The previous menu will

appear.

• Your password must have

exactly six digits.A series of Xs

will appear instead of your

actual password to protect the

password's identity.

Disc Lock 29

Not all DVDs are rated or coded by the Disc maker.You can specifically

lock or unlock a DVD, regardless of its rating. If you lock a specific DVD,

you must enter your password before you can watch the DVD. Password

details are on page 28.

Press SYSTEM MENU.

The GENERAL SETUP PAGE icon will be selected. Press OK or

Your selection will be highlighted in brown. If you choose UNLOCK,

the DVD that is currently in the DVD Player will be unlocked for

six-digit password.

If you choose LOCK, the DVD that is currently in the DVD Player

cannot play unless you enter your six-digit password. PLEASE

ENTER PASSWORD will appear on the TV screen to prompt you to

enter your password. Press the Number buttons to enter your

password, then press OK. Your password will not appear on the TV

screen.This protects its identity. Password details are on page 28.

Press SYSTEM MENU to remove the menus.

• Two-sided DVDs may have a

different ID for each side.To

unlock the entire Disc, unlock

each side.

• Multi-volumeVideo CDs or

DVD sets may have a different

ID for each volume or Disc.To

unlock the set, unlock each

volume or Disc.

• Once you enter your password

to play a Locked Disc, you can

stop and resume playback

without reentering the

password every time you

resume play. However, if you

open the disc tray or turn off

the DVD Player, you will have

to enter the password to play

the Disc again.

• You cannot select DISC LOCK

if there is no Disc in the Player.

30 Parental Levels

You can set the Player to block or allow playback according to the DVD

movie rating. Some DVDs may give you the option of entering your

password to allow playback. If not, change the PARENTAL setting so you

can watch the Disc.

Not all DVDs conform to the levels you select, as not all DVDs are coded

or protected by the DVD manufacturer.Therefore, make sure the DVD

plays according to your PARENTAL setting before you allow children

unlimited access to the Player or DVDs.

To prevent specific DVDs from playing, regardless of how you set the

PARENTAL level, see page 29.

RATING EXPLANATIONS

• ADULT - Mature material; should be viewed only by adults due to graphic

sexual material, violence, or language.

• NC-17 - No children under age 17; not recommended viewing for children

under age 17.

• R - Restricted; recommended that parents restrict children under age 17

from viewing or allow children to view only when supervised by a parent

or adult guardian.

• PGR - Parental Guidance Required

• PG 13 - Material is unsuitable for children under age 13.

• PG - Parental Guidance suggested.

• G - General Audience; recommended as acceptable for viewers of all ages.

• KID SAFE - Safe for children to view

You may play Tracks or Chapters in an order you specify instead of normal

order (1, 2, 3, etc.).The order you set is a Program. For example, if you

want to set up an Audio CD so Track 12 will play first, put Track 12 in

Program position number one (1).

To set up a Program, follow these steps.

number you want to play first. The number of available Titles,

Chapters, or Tracks will appear at the top of the screen.

information. If you are not sure of the contents of aVideo CD or its Tracks,

use the Preview features to see the content of the Tracks. Not allVideo

CDs contain this information. See your Disc case for details.

This DVD Player can play some Compact Disc-Recordable (CD-R) discs

that you record on your computer.These CD-Rs may contain pictures in a

JPEG format or audio files/tracks in an MP3 format. For example, you may

have photographic film developed by a retailer that places the pictures on a

CD-R for you.These pictures may be in JPEG format. Or, you may copy or

download MP3 music files from certain legal Internet sites, then copy those

files onto a CD-R. (You cannot make or record such CD-Rs using this

DVD Player. See your computer manual for details on making CD-R

recordings.)

If you are playing a CD-R on this Player and the CD-R contains JPEG or

MP3 files, you may want to access the CD-R menu using Navigator.

34 JPEG and MP3 Features

General Information on CD-R and CD-RWs

● When you make CDs to play on this DVD Player, the Disc should have

at least 6-10 pictures or 2-3 MP3 music files. Make sure there are at

least 3 MB (three megabytes) of information on the Disc.The maximum

number of files per folder is 500.

● JPEG file names should end with the “.jpg” extension.

● To select a JPEG or MP3 file for playback, press the Number buttons to

select an item, then press OK. Or, press 3 or 4 to select an item, then

press OK.

JPEG features

● Press 3 or 4 to highlight an item in the Disc's menu, then the picture

will be previewed on the right side of the menu.

● While playback is stopped, you will see miniature images of the pictures.

A maximum of 12 images will appear. Press Previous 4or Next

¢ to see the other pictures on the Disc.

● Press ZOOM to enlarge a JPEG image. Press 3, 4, 1, or 2 to move or

pan through the picture.

● When play is stopped, press 4 and 1 to select the filmstrip icon at the

bottom of the screen, then press OK.This will start play at the first

picture on the current page.

● During JPEG playback, press 3, 4, 1, or 2 to flip or rotate the image.

● Press the ANGLE button repeatedly during playback to determine how

the images will progress or "scan" in and out.

Repeat/Shuffle

● During JPEG play, press REPEAT to choose:

REPEAT ONE - Keep the current JPEG image still on the screen.

REPEAT ALL - Play all files on the Disc repeatedly.

SHUFFLE - Play files in random order.

REPEAT OFF - Cancel all repeat options and resume normal playback.

● While the menu is on the screen, press REPEAT to choose:

FOLDER - All file in the current folder will play once.

REPEAT ONE - Keep a JPEG image still on the screen or plays an MP3

file repeatedly.

REPEAT FOLDER - Play files in the selected folder repeatedly.

SHUFFLE - Play files in random order.

MP3 Program

1 While the Disc menu is on the screen and play is stopped, press 1 to

switch into the FILELIST. FILELIST will flash briefly at the bottom of the

screen.

2 Press 3 or 4 to choose a Track to add to the playlist, then press 2.

ADD TO PLAYLIST will appear briefly at the bottom of the screen. (To

remove an item from the Program, press 1 to go to the PLAYLIST.

Press 3 or 4 to choose the item, then press 2 to remove it. REMOVE

FROM PLAYLIST will appear briefly at the bottom of the screen.) The

maximum number of files for a Program is 100.

3 To play the Program, press 3 or 4 to select any item in the PLAYLIST,

then press OK to start playing the Program from that point.

Playing MP3 and JPEG files simultaneously

You may set the DVD Player to display video in one of three formats:

Letter Box, Pan & Scan, or Widescreen (16:9).To choose a format, follow

these steps.The format you select must be available on the DVD. If it is not,

the settings for TV DISPLAY will not affect the picture during DVD

playback.

Press 2 to select theVIDEO SETUP PAGE icon at the top

of the menu, then press OK or 4.

DVD is recorded in pan & scan or regular format. Check the Disc

case for details.

Select 4:3 LETTER BOX if you want to see the entire, widened

picture with black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.This

looks like the picture you see when watching movies in a theater.This

setting is possible only if the DVD was recorded in the letterbox or

widescreen format. Check the Disc case for details.

Select 16:9 (widescreen) if you connected the DVD Player to a

widescreen TV.

Press SYSTEM MENU to remove the menus.

Just as you can adjust your picture on your TV, you can adjust some picture

elements at the DVD Player. Choose a picture setting that best displays the

Disc you are playing.This feature is known as Smart Picture and can be

adjusted by following these steps.

If you selected BRIGHT, STANDARD, or SOFT, you are

finished. Press SYSTEM MENU to remove the menus. You

may want to play a Disc for a few minutes in each setting to decide

which you prefer.

If you selected PERSONAL, you can adjust specific picture

An adjustment scale will appear on the TV screen. Press 1 or 2 to

adjust the element you selected.

• For BRIGHTNESS, choosing a more positive value brightens the

color on the screen and seems to add white to the picture.

Choosing a more negative value darkens the colors in the picture.

Choose zero (0) for the average setting.

• For CONTRAST, choosing a more positive value adds more

noticeable difference between the black and white in your picture

and sharpens the picture. Choose a more negative CONTRAST

value to blur the distinction between black and white in the picture.

The picture will not seem as sharp.

• For TINT, choose a more positive value to add red to the picture.

Choose a negative value to add yellow to the picture. Choose zero

(0) to balance the reds and yellows in the picture.You can adjust

TINT when you need people’s skin tones to look more natural.

• For COLOR, choose a more positive value to increase the color in

your picture. To decrease the color in the picture, choose a more

negative value. As you decrease the COLOR, the picture becomes

more black and white. Choose zero (0) to balance the color.

Press OK to save the setting and return to the PICTURE

SETTING menu. Repeat steps 7-8 as necessary to adjust all

the elements you want.

When you are finished, press SYSTEM MENU.

TVType

DVDs are recorded in a color system, usually NTSC or PAL. NTSC is the

most common in the United States.Your TV also has a color system.

This Player is compatible with NTSC and PAL. However, the color system of

the DVD, the TV, and the Player should match. If all three are not the same,

the DVD may play in only black and white, the picture may roll continuously,

or the picture may appear distorted. TV TYPE lets you set the Player to

match the color systems of your DVDs and your TV.

rate of 96 kHz. Set LPCM OUTPUT to 96K if you are playing Discs

recorded at this high rate. Otherwise, set LPCM OUTPUT to 48K.

Closed captions are hidden in the video signal of some Discs. Different than

subtitles, closed captions are intended for the hearing impaired and also show

sound effects. For example, closed captions may include information such as

“phone ringing” or “footsteps approaching,” while a subtitle would only show

spoken text.

Though you can turn on Closed Captions in the DVD Player’s menu, the

captions must be available on the Disc.Also make sure you turn on Closed

Captioning on yourTV. Otherwise, the captions will not appear.

The Screen Saver is the moving DVD logo that appears on yourTV screen

when playback is stopped. It prevents damage to yourTV screen caused by

leaving a still image on theTV too long.

Press 4to select SCREEN SAVER, then press 2.

No power

Press the STANDBY-ON

button on the front of the DVD Player or POWER

on the remote.

A red light appears on the front of the Player if the DVD Player is in Standby mode (power off).

Make sure you connected the DVD Player’s power cord to an AC power outlet.

Make sure the AC outlet has power by trying another appliance in the same outlet.

•

No picture

•

Make sure the TV power is on.

Check the video cables. Make sure the cable(s) are fastened securely to the DVD Player and to the

TV.

•

Set your TV to the correctVideo In channel.These channels are usually near channel zero. Or, you

may have a button on the TV remote control that selects an Auxiliary, A/V IN, orVideo channel. See

your TV owner’s manual for details. Or, go to your lowest TV channel (01 or 02), then change

channels down until you see DVD playback or the blue DVD screen on the TV.

If you are using an RF modulator as described on page 10, set the TV to channel 3 or 4 instead.

You only need one video connection between the DVD Player and the TV. Details are on page nine.

•

Distorted picture

•

Check the Disc for fingerprints or scratches. Clean the Disc with a soft cloth, wiping from the

center to the edge in a straight line. Do not wipe the Disc in a circular motion.

Sometimes a small amount of picture distortion may appear.This is not a malfunction.

•

The picture is distorted, the picture rolls, or the picture is only black and white.

•

TVs have a color system standard, usually NTSC in the United States. If the Disc’s or DVD Player’s

color system is different than your TV’s color system, the picture may be distorted or colorless. Set

the Player’s TV TYPE to match your TV and your DVDs. Details are on page 38.

A DVD orVideo CD picture may become distorted or black and white if you switch among PAL

and NTSC (for TV TYPE). If so, set SMART PICTURE to STANDARD to correct the picture. Details

are on page 36.

•

The sound is distorted or there is no sound during Disc playback.

•

Make sure you did not connect any cables from the DVD Player to a Stereo’s “PHONO IN” jack.

Make sure you did not connect the Player’s COAXIAL digital audio out jack to an analog jack on

the Stereo. (Analog audio jacks are usually labeled as such and are usually red and white.The coaxial

jack of the DVD Player is black.

No sound

•

Check the audio connections. Details are on pages 10-15. Remember, you only need one audio

connection. See page nine to see what connection best suits your situation.

Make sure cables are connected firmly to all equipment.

Select another channel, sound source, or Auxiliary station at your Stereo or TV. See your Stereo or

TV manual for details. Or, continue selecting the different sound sources or modes on the Stereo

or TV until you hear sound from the Disc that is in the DVD Player. Details are on pages 10-15.

Make sure your DOWNMIX, DIGITAL OUTPUT, and LPCM OUTPUT settings match the

capabilities of your Stereo or TV. Details are on pages 39-40.

•

Check the Audio setting of a DVD in the DVD Disc Menu, if available, and adjust as necessary.

Deactivate mute at the DVD Player by pressing MUTE on the Player’s remote.

Disc will not play.

•

Make sure the Disc label is facing up. If you are playing a two-sided Disc, make sure the label of the

side you want to play is facing up. Details are on page 16.

•

Check the Parental controls. Details are on pages 28-30.

Check the Region Code of the DVD.The DVD must be coded for All regions or Region 1 in order

to play on this DVD Player. Details are on page seven.

•

See if the Disc is defective by trying another Disc. Make sure the Disc is not scratched or warped.

Carefully clean the Disc. Details are on page six.

•

You must finalize CD-R, DVD+R, and DVD+RW discs before playing them on this Player.

If you are playing a CD-R or CD-RW you made, make sure it contains at least 3 MB of data. Details

are on page 34.

An Audio CD will not play.

•

Some Audio CDs available on the market are copy protected.These discs will not play on this DVD

Player. See your retailer for options regarding non-protected Audio CDs.

The DVD logo does not appear on theTV screen after you remove a Disc.

Reset the DVD Player by switching it off, then on again.

•

The DVD Player does not respond to the remote control.

•

Aim the remote at the remote sensor on the front of the Player. Do not aim the remote toward

your TV, but toward the DVD Player.

Remove any obstacles between the DVD Player and the remote control. Move closer to the Player

and try the remote again.

Inspect or replace the batteries in the remote control. Details are on page eight.

The DVD Player will not select some features, such as Angles, Subtitles, or

multi-language Audio.

•

The feature may not be available on the Disc. If it is not, the л will appear on the TV screen. Check

the Disc case to see if the Disc has the feature. If the Disc does not have the feature, the DVD

Player cannot create the feature.This is not a malfunction of the Player.

Or, the feature may not be available at the present time. Some features are only available during

playback, while other items can be accessed only when play is stopped.Try stopping or starting

playback, then try the feature again.

The DVD Player does not work.

•

Disconnect the power cord from the power outlet for a few minutes. Reconnect the power cord

and try to operate the Player again as usual.

The DVD Player turns itself off.

•

If there is no activity at the DVD Player or with its remote control for 15 minutes and playback is

stopped, the Player will turn itself off.This is an energy-saving feature that cannot be altered. Press

STANDBY-ON y on the Player or POWER y or PLAY 2 on the remote to turn on the Player.

Disc play is irregular or DVD Disc menu operation is faulty.

•

Due to the inconsistency of Disc formats provided by various Disc manufacturers, your DVD Player

may require a playability enhancement or upgrade. As DVD technology has advanced, these

enhancements have become both common and easy to complete.

Analog: Sound that has not been turned into numbers.Analog sound varies, while digital sound has specific

numerical values.Analog sound is available when you use the red and white audio jacks on your equipment.

These jacks send audio through two channels, the left and right.

AUDIO OUT Jacks: Jacks on the rear of the DVD Player that send audio to another system (TV, Stereo, etc.).

The jacks are red and white.

CD: Compact Disc.

Chapter: A part of a Title.

COAXIAL jack: Sends digital audio to a Stereo, allowing you to adjust the volume at the Stereo.The Stereo

must have a Coaxial In jack.This connection provides the 5.1 channel surround sound as heard in movie

theaters. The COAXIAL jack on the rear of the DVD Player is black.

Color system: There are various systems for transmitting television signals, for example PAL, SECAM, and

NTSC. NTSC is the most common color system in the United States of America.

ComponentVideoY Pb Pr Jacks: TheVideo Out jacks on the rear of the DVD Player that send high-quality

video to a TV that has ComponentVideo In jacks. The jacks on the DVD Player are red, blue, and green.

Digital: Sound that has been converted into numerical values. Digital sound is available when you use the

Player’s COAXIAL jack, which sends audio through multiple channels instead of two channels as analog does.

Dolby Digital: A surround sound system that provides 5.1 channel sound as used in movie theaters.

DVD: DigitalVideo Disc.

Letter Box: Widescreen format; a TV aspect ratio setting (4:3). Displays the video in full-width, with black bars

at the top and bottom of the TV screen.This format is similar to seeing a movie in a theater. If the Disc does

not include a letter box format, selecting letter box may have no effect. Some DVDs are two-sided, with one

side playing in widescreen format and the other side playing in a normal (pan & scan) format.

Pan & Scan: A TV aspect ratio setting (4:3). Displays the video with full-height picture with one or both sides

of the picture trimmed to fit on your TV screen. Some movie companies refer to this as “reformatting the

picture to fit your TV screen.”

PBC: Playback Control.A special feature on someVideo CDs/SuperVideo CDs that enables interactive use.

PCM: Pulse Code Modulation. A digital audio encoding system.

RGB: Red-Green-Blue.A top-quality video connection where red, green, and blue components of the picture

are carried through separate wires.This also is referred to as the component video connection.

S-Video: Produces a clear picture by sending separate signals for the luminance and the color.

Title: A unit of recording on a DVD.

VCD: Video Compact Disc.

VIDEO OUT Jack: Yellow jack on the rear of the DVD Player that sends video (picture) to a TV.

Widescreen: A TV aspect ratio setting (16:9). Displays the video appropriately when you connect the DVD
