tain parts inside this unit.
1. Recording Copyright
If condensation does occur, leave this unit turned on for
two to three hours. By that time, the unit will have warmed
up and any condensation will have evaporated. To reduce
the risk of condensation, keep this unit connected to a wall
outlet.
Unless it’s for personal use only, recording copyrighted
material is illegal without the permission of the copyright
holder.
2. AC Fuse
The AC fuse inside the A-1VL is not user serviceable. If
For British models
you cannot turn on the A-1VL, contact your Onkyo dealer.
Replacement and mounting of an AC plug on the power supply
cord of this unit should be performed only by qualified
service personnel.
3. Care
Occasionally you should dust the A-1VL all over with a
soft cloth. For stubborn stains, use a soft cloth dampened
with a weak solution of mild detergent and water. Dry the
A-1VL immediately afterwards with a clean cloth. Don’t
use abrasive cloths, thinners, alcohol, or other chemical
solvents, because they may damage the finish or remove
the panel lettering.
IMPORTANT
The wires in the mains lead are coloured in accordance with
the following code:
Blue: Neutral
Brown: Live
4. Power
As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this apparatus
may not correspond with the coloured markings identifying the
terminals in your plug, proceed as follows:
The wire which is coloured blue must be connected to the ter-
minal which is marked with the letter N or coloured black.
The wire which is coloured brown must be connected to the
terminal which is marked with the letter L or coloured red.
WARNING
BEFORE PLUGGING IN THE UNIT FOR THE FIRST
TIME, READ THE FOLLOWING SECTION CARE-
FULLY.
AC outlet voltages vary from country to country. Make
sure that the voltage in your area meets the voltage
requirements printed on the A-1VL’s rear panel (AC230 -
240V, 50 Hz).
IMPORTANT
A 5 ampere fuse is fitted in this plug. Should the fuse need to
be replaced, please ensure that the replacement fuse has a
rating of 5 amperes and that it is approved by ASTA or BSI to
BS1362. Check for the ASTA mark or the BSI mark on the
body of the fuse.
IF THE FITTED MOULDED PLUG IS UNSUITABLE FOR
THE SOCKET OUTLET IN YOUR HOME THEN THE
FUSE SHOULD BE REMOVED AND THE PLUG CUT OFF
AND DISPOSED OF SAFELY. THERE IS A DANGER OF
SEVERE ELECTRICAL SHOCK IF THE CUT OFF PLUG
IS INSERTED INTO ANY 13 AMPERE SOCKET.
If in any doubt, consult a qualified electrician.

Notes:
• Place the unit away from strong light such as direct
sunlight or inverted fluorescent light, which can pre-
vent proper operation of the remote controller.
• Using another remote controller of the same type in
the same room or using the unit near equipment that
uses infrared rays may cause operational interference.
• Do not put any object, such as a book, on the remote
controller. The buttons of the remote controller may
accidentally be pressed and drain the batteries.
• Make sure the audio rack doors do not have colored
glass. Placing the unit behind such doors may prevent
proper remote controller operation.
Attach the battery
cover.
• If there is an obstacle between the remote controller
and the remote control sensor, the remote controller
will not operate.
Notes:
• Do not mix new batteries with old batteries. Do not
mix different kinds of batteries.
• To avoid corrosion, remove the batteries if the remote
controller is not to be used for a long period of time.
• Remove dead batteries immediately to avoid damage
from corrosion. If the remote controller does not
operate smoothly, replace both batteries at the same
time.
• The life of the batteries supplied is about six months
but will vary depending on usage.

Connecting the A-1VL
Caution:
Before Making Any Connections
• Do not connect speakers having impedance values of
4 ohms or lower.
• Do not connect more than one speaker cord to indi-
vidual speaker terminals. Connecting more than one
speaker cord may cause failure.
• Unnecessarily long, or very thin speaker cables may
affect the sound quality and should be avoided.
• Be careful not to short the positive
and negative wires. Doing so may
• Read the manuals supplied with your components.
• Don’t connect the power cord until you’ve completed
all audio and video connctions.
RCA/Phono Connection Color Coding
RCA/Phono connections are usually color coded: red
and white. Use red plugs to connect right-channel audio
inputs and outputs (typically labeled “R”).
Use white plugs to connect left-channel audio inputs
and outputs (typically labeled “L”). And use yellow
plugs to connect composite video inputs and outputs.

Connect the “+” connector on each speaker to the “+”
connectors on the A-1VL, and connect the “–” connec-
tor on each speaker to the “–” connectors on the A-1VL.
Be sure to connect the positive and negative cables for
the speakers properly. If they are mixed up, the left and
right signals will be reversed and the audio will sound
unnatural.
Changing the Speaker
Impedance Value Setting
The A-1VL allows you to set the speaker impedance
values according to the speakers you use, adjusting the
optimum frequency characteristics against speaker
loads.
We recommend you set the “SPEAKER IMPEDANCE
SELECTOR” setting to “8 OHMS MIN./SPEAKER”
for speakers having impedance of 8 ohms or higher.
Likewise, you may want to set the setting to “4 OHMS
MIN./SPEAKER” for speakers having impedance of
4 ohms or higher.

Troubleshooting
If you have any trouble using your A-1VL, look for a solution in the troubleshooting section. If you can’t resolve the
issue yourself, contact your Onkyo dealer.
Power
Can’t turn on the A-1VL.
• Make sure that the power cord is properly plugged into the wall outlet. (page 11)
• Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, wait five seconds or more, then plug the cable in again.
The power is turned off and the power indicator blinks in white.
• The amp protection circuit has been activated. Remove the power cord from the wall outlet immediately and contact
your Onkyo dealer.
Audio
There’s no sound, or it’s very soft.
• When you use the A-1VL as a power amplifier (when the DIRECT function is turned on), the sound from the component
connected to the preamplifier will be output. If you want to output the sound from a component connected to the A-1VL,
or when you use the A-1VL as a preamplifier, use the DIRECT button to turn off the DIRECT function.
• Make sure that all audio connecting plugs are pushed in all the way. (page 9)
• Make sure that the inputs and outputs of all components are connected properly.
• Make sure that the polarity of the speaker cables is correct and that the bare wires are in contact with the metal part
of each speaker terminal. (page 9)
• Make sure that the input source is properly selected. (page 12)
• If the MUTE indicator blinks, press the remote controller’s [MUTING] button to ummute the A-1VL. (page 12)
• To use a turntable with an MC-type cartridge requires a commercially available MC phono preamp. (page 10)
• Make sure that none of the connecting cables are bent, twisted, or damaged.
Noise can be heard.
• Using cable ties to bundle audio cables with power cords, speaker cables, and so on may degrade the audio perfor-
mance, so do not bundle cables and cords together.
• An audio cable may be picking up interference. Try repositioning your cables.
Remote Controller
The remote controller doesn’t work.
• Make sure that the batteries are installed with the correct polarity. (page 8)
• Install new batteries. Don’t mix different types of batteries or old and new batteries. (page 8)
• Make sure that the remote controller is not too far away from the A-1VL, and that there’s no obstruction between the
remote controller and the A-1VL’s remote control sensor. (page 8)
• Make sure that the A-1VL is not subjected to direct sunshine or inverter-type florescent lights. Relocate if necessary.
(page 8)
• If the A-1VL is installed in a rack or cabinet with colored glass doors, the remote controller may not work reliably
when the doors are closed. (page 8)
Recording
Can’t record.
• On your recorder, make sure the correct input is selected. The A-1VL is not equipped with digital input/output
terminals and can perform only analog recording. (page 13)
• The signal from the component connected to the MAIN IN terminal cannot be recorded.
The A-1VL contains a microcomputer for signal processing and control functions. In very rare
situations, severe interference, noise from an external source, or static electricity may cause it to
lock up. In the unlikely event that this happens, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, wait
at least five seconds, and then plug it back in again.
Onkyo is not responsible for damages (such as CD rental fees) due to unsuccessful recordings
caused by the unit’s malfunction. Before you record important data, make sure that the material
will be recorded correctly.
