baTTery inforMaTion
• Use a 12 volt group 24 deep cycle battery or smaller available at any
marine retail store or any battery retailer.
• Use only a marine sealed lead-acid or absorbed glass mat (AGM) battery.
Do not use a non-sealed battery.
• Disconnect battery when not in use.
MainTenanCe
1.After use, the motor unit should be rinsed with fresh water, then wiped
down with a cloth dampened with an aqueous based silicone spray.
2.The propeller must be cleaned of weeds and fishing line. The line can get
behind the prop, wear away the seals and allow water to enter the motor.
Check this after every 20 hours of operation.
• Do not transport kayak with battery.
3.Before each use, check to see that the prop nut is secure.
• Do not mount anything to the battery box cover.
4.To prevent accidental damage during transporting or storage, disconnect
the battery whenever the motor is off of the water. For prolonged storage,
lightly coat the metal parts with an aqueous based silicone spray.
5.For maximum performance, restore battery to full charge before each use.
6.Keep battery terminals clean with fine sandpaper or emery cloth.
7.In order to prevent corrosion and maximize conductivity, it is highly
recommended that you apply a dielectric grease to the plug, receptacle
and battery terminals after every use. Dielectric grease is available at most
hardware or automotive stores.
8.The weedless wedge propeller is designed to provide absolute weed free
operation with very high efficiency. To maintain this top performance,
the leading edge of the blades must be kept smooth. If they are rough or
nicked from use, restore to smooth by sanding with fine sandpaper.
• Do not use battery box for storage of anything but battery.
• Battery should be installed and charged by adults only.
• WarninG: Risk of explosive gas mixture. Never smoke, strike a match,
or cause a spark in the vicinity of battery.
• Before making any connections to batteries in confined space (such as this
kayaks battery box/compartment) allow it to air out for 15 minutes.
• When connecting cables, always connect the red positive ( + ) wires to the
red positive ( + ) terminal on the battery and the black negative ( - ) wires
to the black negative ( - ) terminal on the battery.
• As a general on the water estimate, the Torque 12 volt motor will pull 25
amps at full speed. The actual ampere draw is subject to your particular
environmental conditions and operation requirements. Maintain battery
at full charge. Proper care will ensure having battery power when you need
it, and will significantly improve the battery life. Failure to recharge lead-acid
batteries (within 12-24 hours) is the leading cause of premature
battery failure. Use a variable rate charger to avoid overcharging.
ProPeller rePlaCeMenT
• Replacement propellers are available at most marine retailers or at any
Minn Kota Authorized Dealer. The part number you need is MKP-6
Prop 2061125 Weedless Wedge or for increased power the Power Prop
(MKP-2). The MKP-2 will add about 0.5 mph to the top speed of the boat
with no additional amp draw.
reCharGinG of baTTery
• Follow instructions on your battery charger.
• It is strongly recommended to remove the battery from the boat during
recharging and transport. If you charge the battery while it is in the craft, be
sure to have the battery compartment open and the battery well ventilated.
• Unplug the charger before connecting the battery to the charger.
• WarninG: Be sure that all electrical connections are not in contact with
water as this could result in shock or electrocution.
• Disconnect the motor from the battery before beginning any prop work.
• Hold the propeller and loosen the prop nut with a pliers or a wrench.
• Remove prop nut and washer. If the drive pin is sheared/broken, you will
need to hold the shaft steady with a screwdriver

push it back in.
The built-in Maximizers solid state electronics create pulse width modulation
to provide longer running time and extended battery life. With the Torques
Maximizer speed control, you may, in single battery applications, experience
some interference in your depth finder display due to RF (radio Frequency) or
electrical interference. If interference does occur, call customer service for our
document that has a few steps to reduce or eliminate the interference problem
or download the file from the Torques website page under the features tab at:
• Align new propeller with drive pin.
• Install prop washer and prop nut.
• Tighten prop nut 1/4 turn past snug. [25-35 inch lbs.]Washer
Be careful, over tightening can damage prop.

Replacement parts are available by calling Ocean Kayak customer service
at 800-8-KAYAKS.
i pulled my kill switch and my battery died overnight,
what happened?
The kill switch is not designed as an on/off switch but as an emergency kill
switch. It is recommended to disconnect the battery for any prolonged
storage to eliminate battery drainage.
TroubleshooTinG
My motor does not go directly into reverse from full speed.
is it broken?
Motor fails to turn on or loses power after a short running time:
• Make sure the kill switch tether is in place.
The motor control unit requires being reset before switching from forward to
reverse or reverse to forward. This process is simply setting the dial control to
the off position for approximately 2-3 seconds.
• Check circuit breaker. The reset lever will be angled out at a
60 degree angle if blown. Reset by pressing the lever back in.
• Insure that the motor plug is fully inserted in the receptacle in
the transom of the boat and that both are free of any corrosion.
• Check battery connections for proper polarity and make sure
battery terminals are clean and corrosion free. Use fine sandpaper
or emery cloth to clean terminals.
Can i install an after market prop on my motor to increase speed?
This is not recommended as it will increase the amp draw of the motor causing
it to overheat. The use of any non-standard parts will void the warranty.
how important is the battery selection for the electric motor usage?
The battery is a critical element of your electric motor system. A high-quality
deep cycle marine battery should always be used. Unlike automobile
batteries, deep cycle marine batteries are designed to be drawn down to a
discharged state and then recharged. (To extend the life of your battery, always
recharge after use. Most deep cycle marine batteries fail due to lack of proper
maintenance.)
• Check battery charge, if low return to full charge.
• With battery disconnected make sure prop turns freely. Also
check behind prop for obstructions and debris. See prop
replacement instructions on page 5.
• Check that speed control knob is securely attached to pivot post.
• If this still doesn’t solve the issue, contact customer service.
What size battery do i need?
We recommend using a sealed 12 volt group 24 deep cycle battery with a mini-
mum 85 amp hour rating. A group 24 is the largest size battery that can be used
with the Torque kayak.
Motor stops working completely after a short time:
Turn the speed control dial to the “off” position. Then continue
normal operation.
The batteries i have seen do not have an amp hour rating, they list a
reserve capacity. how do i choose the right battery?
If an amp hour rating is not available, select a deep cycle marine battery with a
minimum of 140 minute reserve capacity.
• Insure that the motor plug is fully inserted in the receptacle and
that both are free of any corrosion.
• Check battery charge, if low return to full charge.
• Insure that the kill switch tether is in place.
What do i need to recharge the battery?
We recommend using a multi-stage charger such as the Minn Kota MK110P.
you experience prop vibration or loud vibration noise coming
from the motor during normal operation:
• Tighten motor tie down strap to reduce vibration.
• Remove and rotate the prop 180 degrees. See propeller
replacement instructions on page 5.
how long will it take to recharge the battery?
The amount of time it takes to recharge the battery will depend on the type of
charger being used. A charger with a higher amp output will charge quicker.
how long will my kayak run on a fully charged battery?
The amount of run-time will vary depending on the amp hour rating of the deep
cycle battery being used. The higher the amp hour rating the more run-time you
will have. As a general estimate, the Torque 12 volt motor will pull 25 amps
at full speed.
• If prop is damaged replace with the MKP- prop kit (see page 5).

freQuenTly asKed QuesTions (ConTinued froM PaGe 7)
What do i do if i experience prop vibration?
Props and shafts are not 100% symmetrical. Often times simply removing the
prop, rotating it 180 degrees, and reinstalling it will lessen or eliminate the
incidence of vibration.
how fast can the Torque go?
The maximum speed is 5.5 mph.
Why is the rudder on the Torque extra large?
The rudder is designed to optimize steering when the motor is in use. It
allows for precise positioning, a tight turning radius, responsive steering and
total hands-free control.
Can the Torque be paddled without the motor?
Yes, a skeg plug is included with the Torque kayak and can be placed in place
of the motor unit. This lowers the weight of the kayak to 75 lbs. and allows it to
paddle like a regular kayak.
