Important Precautions
WARNING:
To reduce the risk of burns, fire, electric shock, or injury to persons, read the
following important precautions and information before operating the hiker.
1. It is the responsibility of the owner to ensure
that all users of the hiker are adequately in-
formed of all warnings and precautions.
into a grounded circuit capable of carrying 15
or more amps. No other appliance should be on
the same circuit. Do not use an extension cord.
2. Use the hiker only as described in this manual. 13. Use only a single-outlet surge suppressor that
is UL 1449 listed as a transient voltage surge
3. The hiker is intended for in-home use only.
Do not use the hiker in any commercial, rental,
or institutional setting.
suppressor (TVSS). The surge suppressor
must have a UL suppressed voltage rating of
400 volts or less and a minimum surge dissi-
pation of 450 joules. The surge suppressor
must be electrically rated for 120 volts AC and
15 amps. To purchase a surge suppressor, see
your local NordicTrack dealer or call 1-888-
825-2588 and order part number 146148.
4. Place the hiker on a level surface, with at
least eight feet of clearance behind it. Do not
place the hiker on any surface that blocks air
openings. To protect the floor or carpet from
damage, cover the floor under the hiker.
14. Keep the power cord and the surge suppres-
sor away from heated surfaces.
5. Keep the hiker indoors, away from moisture
and dust. Do not put the hiker in a garage or
covered patio, or near water.
15. Never move the walking belt while the power
is turned off. Do not operate the hiker if the
power cord or plug is damaged, or if the hiker
is not working properly. (See BEFORE YOU
BEGIN on page 5 if the hiker is not working
properly.)
6. Do not operate the hiker where aerosol prod-
ucts are used or where oxygen is being ad-
ministered.
7. Do not operate the hiker until it is properly as-
sembled. (See ASSEMBLY on page 6.) You
must be able to safely lift 45 pounds (20 kg) in
order to move the hiker.
16. Never start the hiker while you are standing
on the walking belt. Always hold the handrails
while using the hiker.
8. Keep children under the age of 12 and pets
away from the hiker at all times.
17. The hiker is capable of high speeds. Adjust
the speed in small increments to avoid sud-
den jumps in speed.
9. The hiker should not be used by persons
weighing more than 300 pounds.
18. The heart rate monitor is not a medical de-
vice. Various factors, including the user's
movement, may affect the accuracy of heart
rate readings. The heart rate monitor is in-
tended only as an exercise aid in determining
heart rate trends in general.
10. Never allow more than one person on the
hiker at a time.
11. Wear appropriate exercise clothing when
using the hiker. Do not wear loose clothing
that could become caught in the hiker.
Athletic support clothes are recommended for
both men and women. Always wear athletic
shoes. Never use the hiker with bare feet,
wearing only stockings, or in sandals.
19. Never leave the hiker unattended while it is
running. Always remove the key, unplug the
power cord and move the on/off switch to the
off position when the hiker is not in use. (See
the drawing on page 5 for the location of the
on/off switch.)
12. When connecting the power cord (see page 10),
plug the power cord into a surge suppressor
(not included) and plug the surge suppressor
20. Do not change the grade of the hiker by plac-
ing objects under the hiker.
3
Download from Www.Somanuals.com. All Manuals Search And Download.
21. Never insert or drop any object into any
opening.
24. Always remove iFit.com CD’s and videocas-
settes from your CD player or VCR when they
are not in use.
22. When using iFit.com CD’s and videocassettes,
an electronic “chirping” sound will alert you
when the grade and/or speed of the hiker is
about to change. Always listen for the “chirp”
and be prepared for grade and/or speed
changes. In some instances, the grade and/or
speed may change before the personal trainer
describes the change.
25. Inspect and tighten all parts of the hiker regu-
larly.
26.
DANGER:
Always unplug the power
cord immediately after use, before cleaning
the hiker, and before performing the mainte-
nance and adjustment procedures described
in this manual. Never remove the motor cover
unless instructed to do so by an authorized
service representative. Servicing other than
the procedures in this manual should be per-
formed by an authorized service representa-
tive only.
23. When using iFit.com CD’s and videocassettes,
you can manually override the grade and
speed settings by pressing the grade and
speed buttons. However, when the next “chirp”
is heard, the grade and/or speed will change to
the next settings of the CD or video program.

Return the sensor unit to a position against your
chest.
The heart rate monitor is not a medical device.
Various factors may affect the accuracy of
heart rate readings. The heart rate monitor is
intended only as an exercise aid in determining
heart rate trends in general.
HEART RATE MONITOR TROUBLE-SHOOTING
If the heart rate monitor does not function properly,
or if the displayed heart rate is excessively high or
low, try the trouble-shooting steps below.
HOW TO PUT ON THE HEART RATE MONITOR
The heart rate monitor consists of two components:
the chest strap and the sensor unit. Follow the steps
below to put on the heart rate monitor.
• Make sure that the heart rate monitor is under your
clothing, against your skin, and as high under the
pectoral muscles or breasts as is comfortable. Note:
If the heart rate monitor does not function when posi-
tioned as described, try moving it slightly lower or
higher on your chest.
Chest Strap
• Make sure that the logo on the sensor unit is facing
forwards and is right-side-up.
Buckle
• Each time you use the heart rate monitor, use saline
solution such as saliva or contact lens solution to wet
the two electrode areas on the sensor unit (see the
drawing above). If heart rate readings do not appear
until you begin perspiring, re-wet the electrode
areas.

• As you walk on the hiker, make sure that you are
near the center of the walking belt and within arm’s
length of the console. For the console to display
heart rate readings, the user must be within arm’s
length of the console.
Wrap the heart rate
monitor around your
chest. Attach the
other end of the
chest strap to the

scribed above.
Adjust the length of
the chest strap, if
necessary. The
heart rate monitor should be under your clothing,
against your skin, and as high under the pectoral
muscles or breasts as is comfortable. Make sure
that the logo is facing forward and is right-side-up.
• The operation of the heart rate monitor can be af-
fected by magnetic interference caused by high
power lines or other sources. If it is suspected that
magnetic interference may be causing a problem,
try relocating the hiker.

• If the heart rate monitor still does not function prop-
erly, test the heart rate monitor in the following way:
HEART RATE MONITOR CARE AND MAINTENANCE
• Thoroughly dry the heart rate monitor after each
use. The heart rate monitor is activated when the
electrode areas are wetted and the heart rate
monitor is put on; the heart rate monitor shuts off
when it is removed and the electrode areas are
dried. If the heart rate monitor is not dried after each
use, it may remain activated longer than necessary,
draining the battery prematurely.
Hold the heart
rate monitor
and place
your thumbs
over the elec-
trode areas as
shown.
Electrode Areas
Next, hold the
heart rate monitor near the console.
• Store the heart rate monitor in a warm, dry place.
Do not store the heart rate monitor in a plastic bag
or other container that may trap moisture.
While holding one thumb stationary, begin tapping
the other thumb against the electrode area at a rate
of about one tap per second.
• Do not expose the heart rate monitor to direct
sunlight for extended periods of time. Do not expose
the heart rate monitor to temperatures above 122°
Fahrenheit (50° Celsius) or below 14° Fahrenheit
(-10° Celsius).
Check the heart rate reading on the console.
• If the heart rate monitor does not function properly
after you have followed all of the above instructions,
the battery should be replaced in the following way:
• Do not excessively bend or stretch the sensor unit
when using or storing the heart rate monitor.
Locate the battery
cover on the back of
the sensor unit.
Insert a coin into the
slot in the cover,
turn the cover coun-
terclockwise, and
remove it.
• Clean the sensor unit using a damp cloth—never
use alcohol, abrasives, or chemicals. The chest
strap may be hand washed and air dried.
Remove the old
battery and insert a
new CR 2032 bat-
tery; make sure

THE PERFORMANT LUBETM WALKING BELT
This product is for use on a nominal 120-volt circuit,
and has a grounding plug that looks like the plug illus-
trated in drawing 1 below. A temporary adapter that
looks like the adapter illustrated in drawing 2 may be
used to connect the surge suppressor to a 2-pole
receptacle as shown in drawing 2 if a properly
grounded outlet is not available.
Your hiker features a walking belt coated with
PERFORMANT LUBETM, a high-performance lubricant.
IMPORTANT: Never apply silicone spray or other
substances to the walking belt or the walking plat-
form. Such substances will deteriorate the walking
belt and cause excessive wear.

Your hiker, like any other type of sophisticated elec-
tronic equipment, can be seriously damaged by sud-
den voltage changes in your home’s power. Voltage
surges, spikes, and noise interference can result from
weather conditions or from other appliances being
turned on or off. To decrease the possibility of your
hiker being damaged, always use a surge suppres-
sor with your hiker (see drawing 1 at the right).
Surge Suppressor
Lug
Metal Screw
To purchase a surge suppressor, see your local
NordicTrack dealer or call 1-888-825-2588 and order
part number 146148. Use only a single-outlet surge
suppressor that is UL 1449 listed as a transient voltage
surge suppressor (TVSS). The surge suppressor must
have a UL suppressed voltage rating of 400 volts or
less and a minimum surge dissipation of 450 joules.
The surge suppressor must be electrically rated for
120 volts AC and 15 amps.
The temporary adapter should be used only until a
properly grounded outlet (drawing 1) can be installed
by a qualified electrician.
The green-colored rigid ear, lug, or the like extending
from the adapter must be connected to a permanent
ground such as a properly grounded outlet box cover.
Whenever the adapter is used it must be held in place
by a metal screw. Some 2-pole receptacle outlet box
covers are not grounded. Contact a qualified elec-
trician to determine if the outlet box cover is
grounded before using an adapter.
This product must be grounded. If it should malfunc-
tion or break down, grounding provides a path of least
resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of elec-
tric shock. This product is equipped with a cord having
an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding
plug. Plug the power cord into a surge suppressor,
and plug the surge suppressor into an appropriate
outlet that is properly installed and grounded in
accordance with all local codes and ordinances.
Important: The hiker is not compatible with GFCI-
equipped outlets.

HOW TO USE PRESET PROGRAMS
The console offers twenty-six preset programs. Each
preset program automatically controls the grade and
speed of the hiker to simulate a hiking trail as it guides
you through an effective workout. You can choose a
moderate, challenging, or extreme program. Follow the
steps below to use a preset program.
For example, if you select section A of the Delta
Lake Trail, the matrix will show that the grade set-
tings for the program are low. The Speed display
will show that the hiker will reach a maximum
speed of 3 miles per hour during the program and
the Vertical Feet/Cals./Grade display will show
that the hiker will reach a maximum grade of 6%
during the program.
Insert the key fully into the console.

See GETTING STARTED on page 12.
Put on the heart rate monitor if desired.
2
Press the Start button or the Speed + button to
start the program.

See HOW TO PUT ON THE HEART RATE
MONITOR on page 8.
A moment after the button is pressed, the hiker
will automatically adjust to the first grade and
speed settings for the program. Hold the handrails
and begin walking.
Enter your age and a target heart rate if desired.
3
See step 3 on page 13.
Each program is divided into several time seg-
ments of different lengths. The Distance/Time dis-
play shows both the time remaining in the program
and the time remaining in the current segment of
the program. One grade setting and one speed
setting are pro-

erate trail (the Delta Lake Trail) is divided into
seven sections. As you press the Moderate,
Challenging, or Extreme button repeatedly, indica-
tors will flash in the trail display to show which trail
section you have selected. You may choose to
complete all sections of a trail in sequence (one
section each day you exercise) or you may
choose to complete sections at random. Note: If
you are completing sections of a trail in sequence,
when the Moderate, Challenging, or Extreme but-
ton is pressed, the most recently completed sec-
tion of the trail will light and the next section to be
completed will flash.
When only three seconds remain in the first seg-
ment of the program, both the Current Segment
column and the column to the right will flash and a
series of tones will sound. In addition, the Speed
display will flash three times if the speed is about
to change and the Vertical Feet/Cals./Grade display
will flash if the grade is about to change. When the
first segment is completed, all grade settings will
move one column to the left. The grade setting for
the second segment will then be shown in the
flashing Current Segment column and the hiker
will automatically adjust to the grade and speed
settings for the second segment.
When a preset program is selected, the matrix will
show the grade settings for the program. The
Speed display will show the maximum speed set-
ting for the program and the Vertical Feet/Cals./
Grade display will show the maximum grade set-
ting for the program.

As you exercise, indicators will light along the se-
lected trail section to show your approximate posi-
tion on the trail. The program will continue until
the grade setting for the last segment is shown in
the Current Segment column of the matrix and no
time remains in the program. The walking belt will
then slow to a stop.
If desired, press the Total button to view exer-
cise feedback for all consecutive trail sections
completed.
7
If you are completing sections of a trail in sequence
(for example, if you completed sections A and B of
the Delta Lake Trail the last two times you exer-
cised and you are now using section C), you can
view the total vertical feet climbed, the total calo-
ries burned, and the total distance hiked for sec-
tions A, B, and C combined. To view this informa-
tion, press the Total button. The Vertical Feet/
Cals./Grade display will show the total vertical feet
for seven seconds and then the total calories for
four seconds. The Distance/Time display will show
the total distance for eleven seconds.
If the grade or speed setting for the current
segment is too high or too low, you can manually
override the setting by pressing the Grade or
Speed buttons on the console. Every few times
one of the Grade buttons is pressed, an additional
indicator will light or darken in the Current Segment
column of the matrix. Important: If you manually
override the grade or speed setting for the cur-
rent segment, when the segment ends the hiker
will automatically adjust to the grade and
speed settings for the next segment. Note:
Because each program is based on a set dis-
tance, if you manually increase the speed, the
time remaining in the current segment and the
time remaining in the program will decrease; if you
manually decrease the speed, the time remaining
in the current segment and the time remaining in
the program will increase.
When the program is completed, remove the
key.
8
Step onto the foot rails and remove the key from
the console. Make sure to keep the key in a secure
place. Note: If the displays and indicators on
the console remain lit after the key is removed,
the console is in the “demo” mode. Refer to
page 22 and turn off the demo mode.
To stop the program temporarily, press the Stop
button. The displays will pause and the Distance/
Time display will begin to flash. To restart the pro-
gram, press the Start button or the Speed + but-
ton. To end the program, press the Stop button, re-
move the key, and then re-insert the key.
When you are finished using the hiker, move the
on/off switch near the power cord to the off position
and unplug the power cord.
Follow your progress with the displays.

est grade and then return to the lowest grade. This will recalibrate the hiker.
b. If an “E6” appears in the Distance/Time display, remove the key and unplug the power cord. Wait
for sixty seconds and then plug in the power cord and re-insert the key.

Conditioning Guidelines
uses easily accessible carbohydrate calories for en-
ergy. Only after the first few minutes does your body
begin to use stored fat calories for energy. If your goal
is to burn fat, adjust the grade and speed of the hiker
until your heart rate is near the lowest number in your
training zone.
WARNING:
Before beginning this
or any exercise program, consult your physi-
cian. This is especially important for individu-
als over the age of 35 or individuals with pre-
existing health problems.
For maximum fat burning, adjust the grade and speed
of the hiker until your heart rate is near the middle
number in your training zone.
The pulse sensor is not a medical device.
Various factors, including your movement,
may affect the accuracy of heart rate readings.
The sensor is intended only as an exercise aid
in determining heart rate trends in general.
Aerobic Exercise
If your goal is to strengthen your cardiovascular sys-
tem, your exercise must be “aerobic.” Aerobic exercise
is activity that requires large amounts of oxygen for
prolonged periods of time. This increases the demand
on the heart to pump blood to the muscles, and on the
lungs to oxygenate the blood. For aerobic exercise,
adjust the grade and speed of the hiker until your heart
rate is near the highest number in your training zone.
The following guidelines will help you to plan your ex-
ercise program. Remember—these are general guide-
lines only. For more detailed exercise information, ob-
tain a reputable book or consult your physician.
EXERCISE INTENSITY
Whether your goal is to burn fat or to strengthen your
cardiovascular system, the key to achieving the
PROGRAM GUIDELINES
desired results is to exercise with the proper intensity.
The proper intensity level can be found by using your
heart rate as a guide. The chart below shows recom-
mended heart rates for fat burning and aerobic exercise.
Each program should include the following three parts:
A Warm-up—Start each program with 5 to 10 minutes
of stretching and light exercise. A proper warm-up in-
creases your body temperature, heart rate and circula-
tion in preparation for exercise.
Training Zone Exercise—After warming up, increase
the intensity of your exercise until your heart rate is in
your training zone for 20 to 60 minutes. (During the
first few weeks of your exercise program, do not keep
your heart rate in your training zone for longer than 20
minutes.) Breathe regularly and deeply as you exer-
cise—never hold your breath.
To find the proper heart rate for you, first find your age
near the bottom of the chart (ages are rounded off to
the nearest ten years). Next, find the three numbers
above your age. The three numbers define your “train-
ing zone.” The lower two numbers are recommended
heart rates for fat burning; the higher number is the
recommended heart rate for aerobic exercise.
A Cool-down—Finish each program with 5 to 10 min-
utes of stretching to cool down. This will increase the
flexibility of your muscles and will help prevent post-ex-
ercise problems.
Exercise Frequency
To measure your heart rate during exercise, use the
heart rate monitor. If your heart rate is too high or too
low, adjust the speed and grade of the hiker.
To maintain or improve your condition, complete three
programs each week, with at least one day of rest be-
tween programs. After a few months, you may com-
plete up to five programs each week if desired.
Fat Burning
To burn fat effectively, you must exercise at a relatively
low intensity level for a sustained period of time.
During the first few minutes of exercise, your body
The key to success is to make exercise a regular and
enjoyable part of your everyday life.

from your hips. Allow your back and shoulders to relax as you
reach down toward your toes as far as possible. Hold for 15
counts, then relax. Repeat 3 times. Stretches: Hamstrings,
back of knees and back.
2. Hamstring Stretch
Sit with one leg extended. Bring the sole of the opposite foot
toward you and rest it against the inner thigh of your extended
leg. Reach toward your toes as far as possible. Hold for 15
counts, then relax. Repeat 3 times for each leg. Stretches:
Hamstrings, lower back and groin.
2
3. Calf/Achilles Stretch
With one leg in front of the other, reach forward and place your
hands against a wall. Keep your back leg straight and your
back foot flat on the floor. Bend your front leg, lean forward and
move your hips toward the wall. Hold for 15 counts, then relax.
Repeat 3 times for each leg. To cause further stretching of the
achilles tendons, bend your back leg as well. Stretches:
Calves, achilles tendons and ankles.
