Chapter 1: Introduction
Welcome
Thank you for choosing the Dual-Band Wireless A/G Media Center Extender. The Extender lets you send digital
video, pictures, and music from your Media Center PC to your TV, without running cables through the house. Plus
you get to watch and pause live TV shows, or you can digitally record them so you can watch them later.
802.11a: a wireless networking standard
that specifies a maximum data transfer
rate of 54Mbps and an operating
frequency of 5GHz.
How does the Extender do all of this? It sits by your home TV and connects to it using standard video and audio
cables. Then it connects to your home network via Wireless-A (802.11a) or Wireless-G (802.11g) networking, or
if you prefer, it can be connected via standard 10/100 Ethernet cabling. Using the Extender’s remote control and
the user-friendly TV menus, you can browse through TV listings, recordings, digital music tracks, and more.

Navigation Pad
with LED
Press the left, right, up, or down arrows to navigate through the menus displayed on the TV
screen.
To indicate the status of the Extender, the LED can display one of three colors: green, blue,
and red.
Green. The Navigation Pad LED will light up green when the Extender is booting up and
working properly. The green LED will flash quickly when the Extender is updating its
software image.
Blue. The blue Navigation Pad LED will flash quickly when the Extender is resetting itself or
restoring its software image.
Red. The red Navigation Pad LED will flash quickly when a system failure has occurred.
Use the Enter button to make a selection from the menus displayed on the TV screen.
Use the Back button to move back through the menus displayed on the TV screen.

Press the Standby button to put the Extender in power-saving standby mode. Press this
button again to use the Extender. After exiting standby mode, the Extender will re-establish
its connection with the Media Center PC. (This may take several seconds.)

AUDIO
The Extender offers two types of audio outputs, digital and analog. In most cases, you will use the AUDIO
(L and R) ports for analog audio; however, you have the option of digital audio if your TV offers a digital input.
DIGITAL
The DIGITAL port is where you will connect the optical cable for digital audio output.
AUDIO (L and R) The L and R ports are where you will connect the left and right RCA audio cables.
VIDEO
The Extender offers three types of video outputs: composite (VIDEO port), S-video, and component video. In most
cases, you will use the VIDEO or S-VIDEO port; however, you have the option of component video if your TV offers
a component video input.
VIDEO
The VIDEO port is where you will connect the RCA video cable.
S-VIDEO
The S-VIDEO port is where you will connect the S-video cable.
VIDEO SELECT
Use this switch to indicate the type of video the Extender is sending to your TV. For video or
S-video, set this switch to the left. For component video, then set this switch to the right.
NOTE: Make sure the Extender is powered off before changing
the position of this switch.

These ports are where you will connect the component video cables (not included).

The USB ports are not used at this time.
Ethernet Port
The Ethernet port is where you will connect the Ethernet network cable if you are using a
wired Ethernet network.
Ethernet Button Press this button if the Extender is having difficulty communicating with your Media Center
PC over a wired Ethernet network.
Antenna
The antenna is permanently attached to the Extender.

Remote Control
The Extender includes a remote control. When you first want to use the remote, insert the included AA batteries
into the battery compartment. Then use the remote to navigate through menus and make selections on the TV
screen, as well as control slide shows, video, or music.
Here are descriptions of the remote’s various buttons:

Before You Begin
For the Extender to work properly, make sure you have the following:

A PC running Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005
A wired network
OR
a Wireless-A (802.11a), Wireless-G (802.11g), or Wireless A+G (802.11a + 802.11g) network
(A Wireless-B (802.11b) network will not work with the Media Center Extender.)
If the Extender will connect to a wired network, start with the “Instructions for Connecting to a Wired Network”
section. If the Extender will connect to a wireless network, proceed to the “Instructions for Connecting the
Extender” section.

Instructions for Connecting to a Wired Network
1. Connect the included Ethernet network cable from the Extender’s Ethernet port to an
Ethernet network port on your Media Center PC, router, or switch.
2. The Extender’s Ethernet port includes an LED in one corner. It will light up when the Extender
has successfully joined your wired network.
If the LED does not light up, push the Extender’s Ethernet X-II button on the back panel.
3. Proceed to the “Instructions for Connecting the Extender” section.

1. If you are using composite or S-video, connect the video cable from the Extender’s VIDEO output to your TV’s
VIDEO input. Then make sure the VIDEO SELECT switch is set to the left.

2. If you are using analog audio, connect the RCA audio cable from the Extender’s left and right AUDIO outputs
to your TV’s AUDIO inputs.
If you are using a stereo with digital audio, connect the Toslink optical cable (not included) from the
Extender’s SPDIF digital AUDIO output to your stereo’s digital AUDIO input.

3. Plug the Extender’s power cord into an electrical outlet.

Chapter 4: Setting up the Media Center Extender
1. Power on your TV, and select the video input that displays the Extender’s Setup Key Screen (press the INPUT,
SOURCE, or TV/VIDEO button on your TV’s remote control).
2. Write down the Setup Key. You will need to enter it when your Media Center PC asks for the Setup Key.

4. The Media Center Extender Setup wizard will automatically run. When the Media Center PC asks you for the
Setup Key, enter the Setup Key you previously wrote down.
5. Follow the on-screen instructions displayed by the Media Center PC.

Appendix A: Troubleshooting
This appendix provides solutions to problems that may occur during the installation and operation of the
Extender. Read the description below to solve your problems. If you can't find an answer here, check the Linksys
Common Problems and Solutions
1. I’ve connected the Extender to my TV, and I see an error code on the screen.
When an error has occurred, you will see a picture of the Extender and a book, with a numbered triangle in
the lower left-hand corner. Look at the number in the triangle, and refer to the table below for your solution.

2. I need to restore the Extender’s software image.
You can restore the Extender’s software image to its factory defaults; however, if you do so, you will lose any
custom settings you may have configured. (Before you restore its software image, write down all of your
custom settings.) Do NOT restore the software image unless you are sure this is necessary.
To restore the Extender’s software image, follow these instructions:
A. On the back panel of the Extender, set the power switch to the OFF position.
B. Press and hold down the standby button on the front panel. While holding down the standby button, set
the power switch to the ON position.
C. When the Navigation Pad LED flashes green, release the standby button and then immediately press the
standby button once.
D. The Navigation Pad LED will flash yellow as the Extender’s software image is restored.
E. When the software image has been restored, follow the instructions in “Chapter 4: Setting up the Media
Center Extender” to set up the Extender.
F. Use your Media Center PC to enter any custom settings you may have configured. If you need more
information, refer to the documentation for the Media Center PC.
3. I need to update the Extender’s software image.
To update the Extender’s software image, follow these instructions:
A. Download the Extender’s software image update file from the Linksys website, www.linksys.com.
B. Extract the zip file on your Media Center PC and save the Extender’s .mcx file.
C. Double-click the .mcx file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
D. After the software image has been updated, use your Media Center PC to enter any custom settings you
may have configured. If you need more information, refer to the documentation for the Media Center PC.

4. When I use the Extender on my wireless network, I see choppy video and dropped frames, or I hear
choppy audio and distorted sounds.
Follow these instructions until your problem is solved:
A. You may be using a Wireless-B (802.11b) network, which is not supported by the Extender. Make sure
the Extender is connected to a Wireless-A (802.11a) or Wireless-G (802.11g) network. (A Wireless-A
network is recommended.)
B. If you are using a Wireless-G network, your network may be experiencing interference caused by a
microwave or 2.4 GHz cordless phones. If possible, move the wireless router away from your microwave
or 2.4GHz cordless phones. (If your 2.4GHz cordless phones cause interference, you may want to switch
to 900MHz or 5GHz cordless phones.)
C. You may be using a “double hop” wireless network, which is not supported by the Extender. (A “double
hop network” is a network in which both the Media Center PC and Extender communicate with the
wireless router via wireless.) Make sure at least one of the devices, the Extender or the Media Center
PC, is connected to the wireless router using an Ethernet network cable.
D. Check the Media Center PC to see if it has sufficient system resources available for use by the Extender.
If you need more information, refer to the documentation for the Media Center PC.
E. Change the channel that your wireless network uses. For instructions on how to change the channel
setting, refer to the documentation for the wireless router.
F. If your wireless network is still experiencing performance and interference problems, visit
Microsoft’s suggestions about maximizing wireless network performance.

What version of Windows XP Media Center do I need?
You must use Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. The Extender does not support previous versions.
I don’t have Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, but I do have a previous version. How do I get
an upgrade?
For more information, contact the manufacturer of your Media Center PC. If you are not sure how to contact the
Can I use the Extender with a Wireless-B (802.11b) network?
No, Wireless-B networking is not supported by the Extender. It will work with a Wireless-A (802.11a) or
Wireless-G (802.11g) network.
What is a “double hop” wireless network?
It is a network in which both the Media Center PC and Extender are connected to the wireless router via wireless.
This type of network is not supported and may cause choppy video or frequent drop-outs. For best results, use
an Ethernet network cable to connect either the Media Center PC or Extender to the wireless router.
What is the IEEE 802.11a standard?

What is ad-hoc mode?
When a wireless network is set to ad-hoc mode, the wireless-equipped computers are configured to
communicate directly with each other. The ad-hoc wireless network will not communicate with any wired
network.
What is infrastructure mode?
When a wireless network is set to infrastructure mode, the wireless network is configured to communicate with
a wired network through a wireless access point or router.

Appendix B: Wireless Security
Linksys wants to make wireless networking as safe and easy for you as possible. The current generation of
Linksys products provide several network security features, but they require specific action on your part for
implementation. So, keep the following in mind whenever you are setting up or using your wireless network.
Security Precautions
The following is a complete list of security precautions to take:
1. Change the default SSID.
2. Disable SSID Broadcast.
3. Change the default password for the Administrator account.
4. Enable MAC Address Filtering.
NOTE: Some of these security
features are available only
through the network router or
access point. Refer to the
router or access point’s
documentation for more
information.
5. Change the SSID periodically.
6. Use the highest encryption algorithm possible. Use WPA if it is available. Please note that this may reduce
your network performance.

Wireless networks are easy to find. Hackers know that in order to join a wireless network, wireless networking
products first listen for “beacon messages”. These messages can be easily decrypted and contain much of the
network’s information, such as the network’s SSID (Service Set Identifier). Here are the steps you can take:
Change the administrator’s password regularly. With every wireless networking device you use, keep in
mind that network settings (SSID, WEP keys, etc.) are stored in its firmware. Your network administrator is the
only person who can change network settings. If a hacker gets a hold of the administrator’s password, he, too,
can change those settings. So, make it harder for a hacker to get that information. Change the administrator’s
password regularly.
SSID. There are several things to keep in mind about the SSID:
1. Disable Broadcast
2. Make it unique
3. Change it often
Most wireless networking devices will give you the option of broadcasting the SSID. While this option may be
more convenient, it allows anyone to log into your wireless network. This includes hackers. So, don’t broadcast
the SSID.
Wireless networking products come with a default SSID set by the factory. (The Linksys default SSID is
“linksys”.) Hackers know these defaults and can check these against your network. Change your SSID to
something unique and not something related to your company or the networking products you use.

Change your SSID regularly so that any hackers who have gained access to your wireless network will have to
start from the beginning in trying to break in.
MAC Addresses. Enable MAC Address filtering. MAC Address filtering will allow you to provide access to only
those wireless nodes with certain MAC Addresses. This makes it harder for a hacker to access your network with
a random MAC Address.
WEP Encryption. Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is often looked upon as a cure-all for wireless security
concerns. This is overstating WEP’s ability. Again, this can only provide enough security to make a hacker’s job
more difficult.
IMPORTANT: Always
remember that each device in
your wireless network MUST
use the same encryption
method and encryption key or
your wireless network will not
function properly.
There are several ways that WEP can be maximized:
1. Use the highest level of encryption possible
2. Use “Shared Key” authentication
3. Change your WEP key regularly
WPA. Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is the newest and best available standard in Wi-Fi security. Two modes are
available: Pre-Shared Key and RADIUS. Pre-Shared Key gives you a choice of two encryption methods: TKIP
(Temporal Key Integrity Protocol), which utilizes a stronger encryption method and incorporates Message
Integrity Code (MIC) to provide protection against hackers, and AES (Advanced Encryption System), which
utilizes a symmetric 128-Bit block data encryption. RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) utilizes
a RADIUS server for authentication and the use of dynamic TKIP, AES, or WEP.
WPA Pre-Shared Key. If you do not have a RADIUS server, select the type of algorithm, TKIP or AES, enter a
password in the Pre-Shared key field of 8-64 characters, and enter a Group Key Renewal period time

between 0 and 99,999 seconds, which instructs the Router or other device how often it should change the
encryption keys.
WPA RADIUS. WPA used in coordination with a RADIUS server. (This should only be used when a RADIUS
server is connected to the Router or other device.) First, select the type of WPA algorithm, TKIP or AES. Enter
the RADIUS server’s IP Address and port number, along with a key shared between the device and the server.
Last, enter a Group Key Renewal period, which instructs the device how often it should change the
encryption keys.
RADIUS. WEP used in coordination with a RADIUS server. (This should only be used when a RADIUS server is
connected to the Router or other device.) First, enter the RADIUS server’s IP Address and port number, along
with a key shared between the device and the server. Then, select a WEP key and a level of WEP encryption,

Implementing encryption may have a negative impact on your network’s performance, but if you are transmitting

You can update the Extender’s software image; however, if you do so, you will lose the custom settings you may
have configured on the Extender. Before you update its software image, write down all of your custom settings,
including the wireless ones if the Extender works with a wireless network. After you update its software image,
you will have to re-enter all of your custom settings.
To update the Extender’s software image, follow these instructions:
1. Download the Extender’s software image update file from the Linksys website, www.linksys.com.
2. Extract the zip file on your Media Center PC and save the Extender’s .mcx file.

TCP/IP
Before a computer can communicate with a network router, TCP/IP must be enabled. TCP/IP is a set of
instructions, or protocol, all PCs follow to communicate over a network. This is true for wireless networks as
well. Your PCs will not be able to utilize wireless networking without having TCP/IP enabled. Windows Help
