Note:
You cannot clean the print head if an ink cartridge is low or expended. You must replace
the cartridge first (see page 32).
1. Load letter-or A4-size plain paper in the sheet feeder.
2. Press the Setup button.
3. Select Maintenance and press OK.
4. Select Head Cleaning and press OK.
5. Press x Start.
Cleaning lasts around 1 minute. When it’s finished, you see a message on the
display screen.
Caution:
Never turn off the Epson Stylus Photo RX595 Series during a cleaning cycle or you
may damage it.
6. Press x Start to run a nozzle check and confirm that the print head is clean.
Maintaining Your All-in-One 29
Note:
If you don’t see any improvement after cleaning the print head three times, turn off your
all-in-one and wait at least six hours to let any dried ink soften. Then try printing again.
If you do not use your all-in-one often, it is a good idea to print a few pages at least once
a month to maintain good print quality.
Checking the Ink Cartridge Status
Your RX595 Series will let you know when an ink cartridge is low or expended by
displaying a message on its display screen or your computer.
Note:
You cannot print or copy when an ink cartridge is expended even if the other cartridges
are not expended. Replace any expended cartridges before printing or copying.
To check ink cartridge status from the display screen
anytime, follow these steps:
1. Press the Setup button.
2. Select Ink Levels and press OK.
3. A cartridge marked with a ! is getting low on ink.
See page 32 to replace the cartridge, if necessary.
A window may appear on your computer screen when you try to print when ink is
low. This window can optionally display ink offers and other updates retrieved
from an Epson web site. On a Windows computer that is connected to the
Internet, you may see a screen asking if you want to receive these Epson offers the
first time you try to print when ink is low. Click Accept or Decline.
Note:
To disable checking for ink offers or updates from Epson, see the instructions in your
on-screen User’s Guide.

Note:
We recommend that you use genuine Epson cartridges and do not refill them. The use
of other products may affect your print quality and could result in printer damage.
Yields vary considerably based on images printed, print settings, paper type, frequency
of use, and temperature. For print quality, a small amount of ink remains in the cartridge
after the “replace cartridge” indicator comes on. The printer ships with full cartridges
and part of the ink from the first cartridges is used for priming the printer.
For best printing results, use up a cartridge within six months of opening the package.
Maintaining Your All-in-One 31
Replacing Ink Cartridges
Make sure you have a new ink cartridge before you begin. You must install new
cartridges immediately after removing the old ones.
Caution:
Do not open ink cartridge packages until you are ready to install the ink. Cartridges are
vacuum packed to maintain reliability.
Leave your old cartridges in the Epson Stylus Photo RX595 Series until you are ready to
replace them to prevent the print head nozzles from drying out.
Remove the CD/DVD tray and return the output tray to the paper position before
replacing ink cartridges (see page 5).
1. Turn on the RX595 Series.
If a cartridge is low or expended, you see a message on the display screen. Note
which cartridges need to be replaced and press OK.
If you’re replacing a cartridge before you see a message on the display screen,
press the Setup button, select Maintenance, and press OK. Then select
Change Ink Cartridge and press OK.
2. Open the scanner, then open the cartridge cover.
3. Squeeze the tab on the cartridge and lift it up.
Dispose of it carefully. Do not take the used
cartridge apart or try to refill it.
Warning:
If ink gets on your hands, wash them thoroughly with
soap and water. If ink gets into your eyes, flush them
immediately with water. Keep ink cartridges out of
the reach of children.
32 Maintaining Your All-in-One
4. Remove the cartridge from the package, but be careful not to touch the green
chip on the edge.
5. Remove the yellow tape from the bottom of the ink cartridge.
Caution:
Do not remove any other labels or seals, or ink will leak.
6. Insert the new ink cartridge into the holder and push it down until it clicks
into place.
7. Once you replace all the cartridges that need replacing, close the cartridge
cover and push it down until it clicks into place.
8. Close the scanner.

9. Press OK to begin charging the ink. This takes about 2 minutes. When you
see a completion message on the display screen, ink charging is finished.
Caution:
To conserve ink, never turn off the RX595 Series while ink is charging. If you see an ink
replacement message on the display screen, press OK and press down all the
cartridges securely.
If you remove a low or expended ink cartridge, you cannot reinstall and use the
cartridge.

Problems and Solutions
Check the solutions below if you’re having trouble using your Epson Stylus Photo
RX595 Series.
Printing and Copying Problems
■
■
■
■
If the Copy, Memory Card, and Specialty Print lights flash sequentially and
the display screen goes dark, your RX595 Series is in sleep mode to save
power. Press any button (except the P On button) to wake it up.
Make sure the top of your original is positioned against the back left corner of
the scanner glass. If the edges are cropped, move your original away from the
edges slightly.
Make sure your paper is loaded printable side up, short edge first, and against
the right side with the edge guide against it. Don’t load paper above the arrow
mark inside the guide.
Make sure the paper size settings are correct for the paper you loaded.
Paper Feeding Problems
■
If paper doesn’t feed, remove it and flip through the stack to separate the
sheets. Reload paper against the right side and slide the edge guide against it.
■
Do not load too many sheets at once. Load up to 20 sheets of photo paper, 80
sheets of Epson Bright White paper, 100 sheets of matte paper, 120 sheets of
plain paper, 10 envelopes, or one sheet of transfer paper or adhesive sheets.
■
■
Do not load paper with holes punched in it.
If paper is jammed:
1. Press x Start to eject the jammed paper.
2. If paper is still jammed, gently pull it out from the output tray or sheet
feeder.
3. If paper is stuck inside, press the P On button to turn off the RX595
Series. Then open the scanner, remove the jammed paper and torn pieces,
close the scanner, and turn the RX595 Series back on.
Solving Problems 37
Print Quality Problems
Check here for solutions to print or copy quality problems.
If you scanned your image first and the quality problem also appears when you
view the image on your computer screen, also check for image quality solutions in
the on-screen User’s Guide.
■
Make sure the document is placed flat against the scanner glass and the
RX595 Series is not tilted or placed on an uneven surface.
■
■
■
Load the paper printable side up (usually the whiter, brighter, or glossy side).
Make sure your paper isn’t damp or curled.
Use a support sheet with special paper or load your paper one sheet at a time.
Remove sheets from the output tray so not too many collect at a time.
■
Make sure the type of paper you loaded matches the paper size and paper type
settings on the control panel (see page 10) or in your printer software
(see page 25).
■
■
For the best print quality, use Epson papers (see page 7) and genuine Epson
ink cartridges (see page 32).
If you notice light or dark bands across your printouts or they are too faint,
you may need to clean the print head. This unclogs the nozzles so they can
deliver ink properly. Run a nozzle check (see page 28) to see if the print head
needs cleaning.
■
■
Clean the print head (see page 29).
If you notice jagged vertical lines, you may need to align the print head. See
the on-screen User’s Guide for instructions.
■
■
The ink cartridges may be low on ink. Check your cartridge status (see
page 28) and replace cartridges, if necessary (see page 32).
If a dotted line appears in the image, clean the scanner glass with a soft, dry,
lint-free cloth (paper towels are not recommended), or use a small amount of
glass cleaner on a soft cloth, if necessary. Do not spray glass cleaner directly
on the glass.

Important Safety Instructions
Before using your RX595 Series, read and follow these safety instructions:
■
■
■
Be sure to follow all warnings and instructions marked on the RX595 Series.
Use only the type of power source indicated on the RX595 Series label.
Use only the power cord that comes with the RX595 Series. Use of another cord may
cause fires or shock. Do not use the cord with any other equipment.
■
■
Place the RX595 Series near a wall outlet where the plug can be easily unplugged.
If you won’t be using the RX595 Series for a long period, unplug the power cord from
the electrical outlet.
■
■
Always turn off the RX595 Series using the P On button, and wait until the P On
light stops flashing before unplugging the printer or cutting off power to the electrical
outlet.
Avoid plugging the RX595 Series into an outlet on the same circuit as a photo copier
or air control system that regularly switches on and off, or on an outlet controlled by a
wall switch or timer.
■
■
Do not let the power cord become damaged or frayed.
If you use an extension cord with the RX595 Series, make sure the total ampere rating
of the devices plugged into the extension cord does not exceed the cord’s ampere
rating. Also, make sure the total ampere rating of all devices plugged into the wall
outlet does not exceed the wall outlet’s ampere rating.
■
■
Avoid locations that are subject to rapid changes in heat or humidity, shocks or
vibrations, or dust.
Leave enough room around the RX595 Series for sufficient ventilation. Do not block
or cover openings in the RX595 Series case or insert objects through the slots.
■
■
Do not place the RX595 Series near a radiator or heating vent or in direct sunlight.
Do not use aerosol products that contain flammable gases inside or around the
RX595 Series. Doing so may cause fire.
■
Place the RX595 Series on a flat, stable surface that extends beyond its base in all
directions. It will not operate properly if it is tilted or at an angle.
■
■
Make sure the RX595 Series is at least 4 inches (10 cm) away from the wall.
Do not open the scanner section while copying, printing, or scanning.
40 Notices
■
Do not touch the flat white cable inside the RX595 Series, and be careful not to trap
your fingers when closing the scanner.
■
■
Do not spill liquid on the RX595 Series.
Except as specifically explained in your documentation, do not attempt to service the
RX595 Series yourself.
■
Unplug the RX595 Series and refer servicing to qualified service personnel under the
following conditions: if the power cord or plug is damaged; if liquid has entered the
product; if the product has been dropped or the case damaged; if the product does not
operate normally or exhibits a distinct change in performance. Adjust only those
controls that are covered by the operating instructions.
■
When storing or transporting the RX595 Series, do not tilt it, stand it on its side, or
turn it upside down; otherwise ink may leak from the cartridges.
Ink Cartridge Safety Instructions
■
Keep ink cartridges out of the reach of children and do not drink the ink.
■
Be careful when you handle used ink cartridges; there may be ink remaining around
the ink supply port. If ink gets on your skin, wash it off with soap and water. If it gets
in your eyes, flush them immediately with water.
■
■
Do not put your hand inside the RX595 Series or touch any cartridges during
printing.
Install a new ink cartridge immediately after removing an expended one. Leaving
cartridges uninstalled can dry out the print head and may prevent the RX595 Series
from printing.
■
If you remove an ink cartridge for later use, protect the ink supply area from dirt and
dust and store it in the same environment as the RX595 Series. Note that there is a
valve in the ink supply port, making covers or plugs unnecessary, but care is needed to
prevent the ink from staining items that the cartridge touches. Do not touch the ink
cartridge ink supply port or surrounding area. Do not store the cartridge upside
down.
LCD Screen Safety
■
Use only a dry, soft cloth to clean the LCD screen. Do not use liquid or chemical
cleansers.
■
If the LCD screen is damaged, contact Epson. If the liquid crystal solution gets on
your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water. If the liquid crystal solution
gets into your eyes, flush them immediately with water. If discomfort or vision
problems remain after a thorough flushing, see a doctor immediately.
