With an autom obile/airplan e power adapter, you can save battery power

Printers  
You can attach alm ost an y type of prin ter to your con vertible tablet PC.  
Th e m ost com m on types are in kjet an d laser prin ters, wh ich prin t in color  
or black an d wh ite.  
In kjet prin ters an d cartridges are relatively in expen sive, but th ey are  
slower th an laser prin ters. Usin g an in kjet color prin ter, you can prin t  
pictures, ban n ers, an d greetin g cards, as well as docum en ts.  
Laser prin ters an d cartridges are m ore expen sive, but th ey prin t m uch  
faster th an in kjet prin ters. Laser prin ters are better th an in kjet prin ters  
wh en you are prin tin g large docum en ts.  
USB flash drive  
Use a USB flash drive for storin g files or tran sferrin g files to an oth er  
com puter.

Installing the battery  
To install the battery:  
1 Close th e LCD pan el.  
2 Turn your con vertible tablet PC over so th e bottom is facin g up.  
3 Hold th e battery label-side down an d lower it in to th e open battery  
bay un til th e battery clicks in to place.  
4 Slide th e battery lock to th e locked position .  
Connecting the AC adapter  
You can run your con vertible tablet PC usin g an AC adapter or your  
con vertible tablet PCs battery. Th e battery was sh ipped to you partially  
ch arged. You sh ould use th e AC adapter righ t away to fully ch arge th e  
battery. Allow th ree h ours for th e battery to fully ch arge.  
Important  
If the battery is not fully charged before you use your  
convertible tablet PC on battery power for the first time, the  
battery life may be much shorter than you expect. If the  
battery life seems short even after being charged for  
three hours, the battery may need to be recalibrated. For  
information on recalibrating the battery, see “Recalibrating  
the battery” on page 81.

Connecting the AC adapter  
To connect the AC adapter:  
1 Con n ect th e power cord to th e AC adapter.  
Caution  
Make sure that you use the AC adapter that came with your  
convertible tablet PC or one of the same type purchased  
from Gateway.  
Replace the power cord if it becomes damaged. The  
replacement cord must be of the same type and voltage  
rating as the original cord or your convertible tablet PC may  
be damaged.  
2 Con n ect th e AC adapter to your con vertible tablet PCs power  
con n ector.

3 Plug th e power cord in to a wall outlet. Th e battery ch arge in dicator  
turn s on (see Status in dicators” on page 33 for th e location of th e  
battery ch arge in dicator). If th e battery ch arge in dicator does n ot  
turn on , un plug th e adapter from your con vertible tablet PC, th en  
plug it back in .  
4 Wh en you fin ish usin g your con vertible tablet PC for th e first tim e,  
turn off your con vertible tablet PC an d leave your con vertible tablet  
PC con n ected to AC power un til th e battery ch arge in dicator turn s  
blue.  
Warning  
Do not attempt to disassemble the AC adapter. The  
AC adapter has no user-replaceable or user-serviceable  
parts inside. The AC adapter has dangerous voltages that  
can cause serious injury or death. Contact Gateway about  
returning defective AC adapters.  
Important  
If the battery charge indicator does not turn blue after  
three hours, contact Gateway Customer Care at  
Protecting from power source problems  
Durin g a power surge, th e voltage level of electricity com in g in to your  
con vertible tablet PC can in crease to levels far above n orm al levels an d  
cause data loss or system dam age. Protect your con vertible tablet PC an d  
periph eral devices by con n ectin g th em to a surge protector, wh ich absorbs  
voltage surges an d preven ts th em from reach in g your con vertible tablet  
PC.  
Warning  
High voltages can enter your convertible tablet PC through  
both the power cord and the modem connection. To protect  
your convertible tablet PC and avoid electrical shock, use  
a surge protector. If you have a telephone modem, use a  
surge protector that has a modem jack. If you have a cable  
modem, use a surge protector that has an antenna/cable  
TV jack. During an electrical storm, unplug both the surge  
protector and the modem.

Do not work for long periods with the convertible tablet PC  
resting on your lap. If the air vents are blocked, the  
convertible tablet PC may become hot enough to harm  
your skin.  
Provide adequate space around your convertible tablet PC  
so air vents are not obstructed. Do not use the convertible  
tablet PC on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similar surface.  
Turning on the Power on Lid Lift feature  
Th e Power on Lid Lift feature turn s on your con vertible tablet PC  
wh en ever you open th e LCD pan el. Your con vertible tablet PC was  
sh ipped to you with th e Power on Lid Lift feature turn ed off.  
To turn on the Power on Lid Lift feature:  
1 Turn on your con vertible tablet PC.  
2 As soon as it starts an d you see a startup screen , press F2. Th e BIOS  
Setup utility open s.  
3 Open th e Advanced m en u.  
4 High ligh t Wake From Lid, th en select Enabled by pressin g th e spacebar.  
5 Open th e Exit m en u, th en h igh ligh t Exit Saving Changes an d press  
ENTER.  
6 Select Yes, th en press ENTER.

to “wake” it up.

To close unresponsive programs and restart your convertible tablet  
PC:

If your convertible tablet PC does not turn off immediately,  
complete the following steps until your convertible tablet  
PC turns off:  
1 Slide and hold the power switch for about five seconds,  
then release it.  
2 Insert a straightened paper clip into the reset hole on  
the bottom of your convertible tablet PC.  
3 Unplug the power cord and remove the battery for more  
than 10 seconds.

time. A monitor must be plugged into the monitor port  
on your convertible tablet PC.

examples of devices that provide wireless

Your con vertible tablet PCs pen is th e on ly device th at can write, tap,  
an d in put directly on your con vertible tablet PCs display.  
Caution  
A finger-tap or PDA stylus has no effect on your convertible  
tablet PC’s display, and ink pens and other pointed objects  
could damage the surface. Always use the pen that came  
with your convertible tablet PC. You can order extra pens  
from Gateway.

Do not sharply strike the display. Although the display is  
durable, it can break.

with equipment on commercial aircraft. Current aviation  
regulations require wireless devices to be turned off while  
traveling in an airplane. IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, and  
IEEE 802.11g communication devices are examples of  
devices that provide wireless communication.  
In environments where the risk of interference to other  
devices or services is harmful or perceived as harmful, the  
option to use a wireless device may be restricted or  
eliminated. Airports, hospitals, and oxygen or flammable  
gas laden atmospheres are limited examples where use  
of wireless devices may be restricted or eliminated. When  
in environments where you are uncertain of the sanction  
to use wireless devices, ask the applicable authority for  
authorization prior to use or turning on the wireless device.

Calibration  
Th e first tim e you use your con vertible tablet PC, you sh ould calibrate  
your pen for both portrait an d lan dscape orien tation s. Calibration  
en sures th e accuracy of th e pen an d adjusts th e screen s perform an ce for  
differen t users.  
If th e on -screen poin ter does n ot seem to lin e up with th e tip of th e  
pen —for exam ple, because som eon e else h as used your con vertible  
tablet PC an d adjusted it for th eir own use—recalibrate it to your tappin g  
pattern s.  
Recalibrate if you write with th e opposite h an d from th e previous  
user—righ t-h an ded writer to left-h an ded writer.  
To open the calibration program:  
Double-tap or double-click  
(Tablet and Pen Settings) in th e taskbar.  
Tap or click Properties, th en tap or click Calibrate. Follow th e  
on -screen in struction s.  
Gestures  
A gesture is a sh ape you draw with your tablet PC pen to sen d a com m an d  
to your con vertible tablet PC. In In put Pan el, you can also use gestures  
to con trol th e in sertion poin t in th e active program . Wh en you use th ese  
gestures, you get th e sam e result as pressin g th e correspon din g key on a  
stan dard keyboard.

If an external monitor or projector is connected and you  
close the LCD panel, your convertible tablet PC may turn  
off the LCD panel, but will not enter Standby mode.

Th e S-Video out jack on your option al port replicator lets you view your  
con vertible tablet PC display on a television screen usin g a stan dard  
S-Video cable.

To turn on external video by default, connect the television  
(or other external video device) before starting your  
convertible tablet PC.

Audio is not transmitted through the S-Video out jack. Use  
the built-in speakers or a set of headphones or external  
powered speakers, or connect your convertible tablet PC  
to a stereo system using the headphone jack to hear sound  
while playing a DVD. DVD playback to a VCR will be  
scrambled by copyright protection software.  
To view your convertible tablet PC display on a television:  
1 With your con vertible tablet PC off, con n ect on e en d of a stan dard  
S-Video cable to th e S-Video out jack on your port replicator. For th e  
location of th e S-Video out jack, see Back” on page 110.  
2 Con n ect th e oth er en d of th e cable to th e Video in jack on your

Monitoring the battery charge  
Your n ew Gateway con vertible tablet PC is design ed to provide an

tablet PC uses th e latest ch ipset an d m obile processor tech n ologies to  
m an age th e processor speed an d power con sum ption for a greater battery  
life experien ce. Th is design provides you with m axim um perform an ce  
wh en plugged in to AC power balan ced with optim ized battery life wh en  
on battery power.

If your battery ch arge in dicator displays wh at looks like an in accurate  
ch arge, you m ay n eed to recalibrate th e battery. For m ore in form ation ,

Recalibrating the battery  
If your con vertible tablet PC un expectedly goes in to Stan dby m ode wh ile  
you are usin g it but th e battery ch arge is n ot low, you m ay n eed to  
recalibrate your battery. You sh ould also recalibrate th e battery  
periodically to m ain tain th e accuracy of th e battery gauge.  
To recalibrate the battery:  
1 Con n ect th e AC adapter, th en turn on your con vertible tablet PC.  
2 As soon as your con vertible tablet PC starts an d you see a startup  
screen , press F2. Th e BIOS Setup utility open s.  
3 Open th e Advanced m en u.  
4 High ligh t Battery Auto Learning, th en select Enabled by pressin g th e  
spacebar.

5 Open th e Exit m en u, th en h igh ligh t Exit Saving Changes an d press

Do not interrupt the battery recalibration process. If  
recalibration is interrupted, you must start the process over  
again.  
Wh en th e recalibration h as fin ish ed, th e m essage “Press [Esc] key to  
exit” appears.  
7 Press ESC. Th e battery ch arge in dicator n ow displays an accurate  
battery ch arge. If th e battery ch arge in dicator does n ot sh ow an  
accurate ch arge, con tact Gateway Custom er Care.  
Changing batteries  
If your con vertible tablet PC is con n ected to AC power, you can ch an ge  
th e battery wh ile your con vertible tablet PC is turn ed on . If your  
con vertible tablet PC is n ot plugged in to an AC outlet, you m ust turn  
your con vertible tablet PC off wh ile ch an gin g th e battery.

PC, it reads th e m em ory in form ation from th e h ard drive an d open s

Using power saving modes  
Always save your work before usin g Stan dby m ode. In Stan dby m ode,  
your con vertible tablet PC reduces or turn s off th e power to m ost devices  
except m em ory. However, th e in form ation in m em ory is n ot saved to th e  
h ard drive. If power is in terrupted, th e in form ation is lost.  
Wh en in Hibern ate m ode, your con vertible tablet PC saves all m em ory  
in form ation to th e h ard drive, th en turn s th e power com pletely off.

m odem cable to see if th at m akes a differen ce. Make sure th at th e  
con n ectors are free from corrosion an d all screws in th e wall or  
teleph on e wall jack are secure.  
You can also call your teleph on e service an d h ave th e teleph on e lin e  
ch ecked for n oise or low lin e levels.  
Try an oth er teleph on e lin e (eith er a differen t teleph on e n um ber in  
your h ouse or a teleph on e lin e at a differen t location ). If you can  
con n ect on th is lin e, call your teleph on e service to fix th e origin al  
lin e.  
Try con n ectin g with th e m odem at a lower con n ection speed. If

Your fax communications program only sends and receives faxes at  
14,400 bps when you have a 56K modem

of 14,400 bps.
