Samsung SCH-i600 2003 OS Upgrade  
INTRODUCTION  
The Samsung Upgrade Tool will allow you to upgrade the Smartphone 2002 operating system to the  
Windows Mobile Smartphone 2003 operating system on the Samsung SCH-i600 smartphone.  
This tool is NOT designed to back-up or restore user installed applications or data (i.e. contacts, files,  
settings, photos, etc…). All user data will be lost during the upgrade process. It is the user’s responsibility  
to back-up all data using the Microsoft® ActiveSync® 3.7 synchronization software (provided on the  
Samsung Companion CD or downloadable from the Microsoft Windows Mobile web page).  
Disclaimer: Samsung is not responsible for any 3rd party applications installed in your handset. Make  
certain you have saved the installation programs for these applications Additionally, you should verify the  
applications are compatible with Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 Software before trying to re-install.  
INSTALLATION  
1.1 SYSTEM and EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

Supported Microsoft Windows OS: 98SE, ME, 2000, or XP  
40 MB of free hard disk space  
Microsoft ActiveSync v3.7  
Samsung USB Drivers (available for download on the OS Upgrade web page)  
Available USB Port  
CD-ROM drive  
Samsung SCH-i600 Handset and Desktop Charger/Sync Cradle with power adapter  
Warning: DO NOT run this program on a Windows 95/98 first edition or NT Operating System. These  
Operating Systems do not meet the minimal requirements for USB support. Any 3rd party Travel  
Chargers, Desktop Cradles or USB Sync Cables are not supported and the results of using these  
accessories during the upgrade are unknown.

1.2 IMPORTANT NOTIFICATIONS  
After installing the above software, applications make certain:  
1. You synchronize/back-up all of your personal data with your PC via ActiveSync.  
2. You have a live internet connection. (Broadband/DSL/Hi-Speed connection is preferred)  
3. Disable the stand-by and hibernation modes on your PC.  
4. The SCH-i600 phone radio connection is turned on. To verify the radio is on, the antenna and signal  
strength icon should appear as  
.
5. Your SCH-i600 cradle is connected directly to your PC USB port and NOT through a USB Hub or any  
other USB pass-through device.  
6. Your SCH-i600 cradle is connected and plugged into a power outlet.  
1.3 START UPGARDE PROCESS  
1. Directly connect the Samsung SCH-i600 Desktop/Sync cradle to your PC and to a power outlet.  
2. Download the Upgrade Tool file (Samsung_i600_UpgradeTool.zip) to your PC desktop.  
3. Double-click the Upgrade Tool file and extract the folder to your PC desktop.  
4. Double-click the i600 Upgrade Tool folder on your desktop.  
5. Double-click the mobile device icon  
to run the application.  
6. CAREFULLY, follow the on-screen instructions to begin the upgrade process.  
7. Once the upgrade of the operating system is complete, you must accept the changes made to the  
operating system by performing the following steps:  
1. Undock the device from the Desktop/Sync cradle  
2. Remove the battery  
3. Replace the battery and power-on the device  
When the SCH-i600 handset powers up the home screen  
should appear as the screen image to the right:

8. Verify the software version number in your handset. Start Menu > Settings menu > More > Phone  
Settings > Version. The following should appear:  
PDA  
S:i600.03.V.XE18.13349 EBoot:04.11  
Phone  
S:i600.03 V:XE18  
9. The upgrade is Successful!  
1.4 RE-SYNCHORNIZATION OF YOUR DATA  
After you have successfully upgraded the SCH-i600 handset to Windows Mobile 2003 Software for the  
Smartphone OS:  
Note: You can now upgrade to the latest version of ActiveSync, which is downloadable from the  
Microsoft Windows Mobile web site.  
1. Re-set the ActiveSync Connection Settings. Open the ActiveSync application > Select File >  
Select Connection Settings > Check the Box next to “Allow USB Connection with Desktop  
Computer” > Click OK.  
2. Dock the SCH-i600 handset in the Desktop/Sync cradle.  
3. Establish a new ActiveSync partnership and follow the on-screen instructions.  
Note: ActiveSync will prompt you to set up a new partnership and rename your device.

TROUBLESHOOTING

If you receive a communication error, verify you have the desktop/sync cradle directly connected to  
your PC and not through a USB Hub or any other pass-through device.  
If you receive an error opening the upgrade tool, make sure you have extracted the file to your PC  
desktop and not have it open in the WinZip file.  
If you receive an “Open With” menu window/pop-up when extracting any zip file, you will need to  
install the WinZip application. WinZip can be downloaded from www.winzip.com. For further  
assistance with WinZip please see www.winzip.com or choose Help within the WinZip application.

If you do not know how to disable the stand-by and/or hibernation modes on your PC, please contact  
the manufacture for your PC for support on Power Save options.

If for any reason the install tool locks up, exit program, restart your PC and try the upgrade again.  
If ActiveSync fails after you have upgraded your handset, please restart your PC and try the upgrade  
again.

If the install tool only updates the PDA software and NOT the Phone software, verify the phone radio  
is turned on. If it was not, turn on and perform the upgrade again.  
If the install tool only updates the PDA software and NOT the Phone software, verify that you  
carefully followed the instructions in setting up the Samsung PDA Drivers.

If you experience any other problems or cannot recover your device, please visit a Verizon Wireless
