(1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference
received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.
Note: This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for class B digital device,
pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection
against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can
radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and use in accordance with the instructions, may
cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference
will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or
television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is
encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:
• Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.
• Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver.
• Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected.
• Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help.
Use of shielded cable is required to comply with class B limits in Subpart B of Part 15 of FCC Rules.

Model ID0019 (including WLAN Module MoM217FCC ID: AZD217)
This device complies with Industry Canae-eempt RSS standard(s). Operation is subject to the
following two conditions: (1) this device ause interference, and (2) this device must accept
any interference, including inteerence that y cause undesired operation of the device.
This transmitter must not be co-loated or operated in conjunction with any other antenna or
transmitter.
The available scientific evidence does not show that any health problems are associated with using
low-power wireless devices. There is no proof, however, that these low power wireless devices are
absolutely safe. Low-power wireless devices emit low levels of radio frequency energy (RF) in the
microwave range while being used. Whereas high levels of RF can produce health effects (by heating
tissue), exposure to low-level RF that does not produce heating effects causes no known adverse
health effects. Many studies of low-level RF exposures have not found any biological effects. Some
studies have suggested that some biological effects might occur, but such findings have not been
confirmed by additional research. This model has been tested and found to comply with FCC/IC
radiation exposure limits set forth for an uncontrolled equipment and meets the FCC radio frequency
(RF) Exposure Guidelines in Supplement C to OET65 and RSS-102 of the IC radio frequency (RF)
Exposure rules.

overseas travels or special power sources such as those on aircraft and
ships, DC-AC inverters, etc.
NOTES
• We recommend charging the battery pack in temperatures between
10 °C and 30 °C (50 °F and 86 °F). If either the ambient temperature or
the battery packs temperature is outside the range of approx. 0 °C to
40 °C (32 °F to 104 °F), charging will not start.
• If the ambient temperature or the battery packs temperature is low,
charging may take longer than usual.
• The battery pack will be charged only when the camcorder is off.
• If the power supply was disconnected while charging a battery pack,
make sure the POWER/CHG indicator has gone out before restoring
the power supply.
• If remaining battery time is an issue, you can power the camcorder
using the compact power adapter so the battery pack will not be con-
sumed.
• Charged battery packs continue to discharge naturally. Therefore,
charge them on the day of use, or the dabefore, to ensure a full
charge.
• Battery packs for this camcorder cdisplay the remaining battery time.
The first time you use a baac, fully charge it and then use the
camcorder until the battery s completely exhausted. Doing so will
ensure that the remaiing recording time will be displayed accurately.
• We recommend that you prepare battery packs to last 2 to 3 times
longer than you think you might need.
USA and Canada only: The Lithium ion/polymer battery that
powers the product is recyclable. Please call
1-800-8-BATTERY for information on how to recycle this
battery.

the image beyond the range of the optical zoom to obtain a
larger zoom without any deterioration in image quality. At full wide
angle, the angle of view with advanced zoom is wider than the
angle of view with optical zoom.
[
Digital] For digital zoom (light blue area on the zoom bar),
the image is processed digitally so mage quality will deteriorate
the more you zoom in.
NOTES
• Keep at least 1 m (3.ft.) away from the subject. At full wide angle, you
can focus on a subject as close as 1 cm (0.39 in.). Using tele macro

Advanced Shooting
This chapter covers advanced shooting functions, such as Spe-
cial Scene modes and Baby mode. For details about basic
video shooting, refer to Basic Shooting and Playback (A 41).
Selecting the Movie Format (AVCHD/MP4)
You can choose to record movies in AVCHD or MP4 format. AVCHD
movies are ideal for playback with fantastic picture quality. MP4 mov-
ies are versatile and can easily be played back on smartphones or
uploaded to the Web.
Operating modes:
SCN
> [ Recording Setup] > [Movie Format] >

Selecting the Video Qualiy
The camcorder offers several video quality options (measured by bit
rate*) for recording movies. For AVCHD movies, select 60P or MXP
mode for higher quality and select LP for longer recording times. Simi-
larly, for MP4 movies, select 35 Mbps or 24 Mbps mode for higher
quality and 4 Mbps mode for longer recording times. If you select 60P
or 35 Mbps, movies will be recorded at 60P frames per second, pro-
gressive.
The table after the following procedure gives approximate recording
times.
* Bit rate indicates how much information is recorded in 1 second of video and also
affects recording time available on the memory. Movies with higher bit rates will
have higher video quality while those with lower bit rates will have smaller file sizes,
allowing you to record longer and upload more quickly.

Handling Precautions
Camcorder
Be sure to observe the following precautions to ensure maximum per-
formance.
Save your recordings periodically. Make sure to transfer your record-
ings to an external device such as a computer or digital video recorder
(A 107) and save them on a regular basis. This will protect your impor-
tant recordings in case of damage and create more free space on the
memory. Canon shall not be liable for any data loss.
• Do not carry the camcorder by the LCD panel. Be careful when closing
the LCD panel.
Handle the touch screen with care. Do not apply excessive force and
do not use ballpoint pens or other hard-tipped tools to operate the
touch screen. This may damage the touch screens surface.
• Do not hold the camcorder in the same posture for long periods of
times as this may cause low-temperaturcontact burns. Even if the
camcorder does not feel too hot, ongecontact with the same
body part may cause skin rss r blistering. The use of a tripod is
recommended for people wculation problems or very sensitive
skin, or when using te camcoder in very hot places.
• Do not leave the camcordr in places subject to high temperatures (like
the inside of a car parked under direct sunlight), or high humidity.
• Do not use the camcorder near strong electromagnetic fields such as
above TVs or near plasma TVs.
6/4Do not use the camcorders Wi-Fi functions inside hospi-
tals, medical clinics or onboard aircraft. In addition, do not use them
near medical equipment or sensitive electronic devices as it may affect
their performance. In the case of pacemakers, keep the camcorder at
least 22 cm (8.7 in.) away from the device.
6/4The camcorders Wi-Fi functions may be subject to inter-
ference from devices such as cordless phones and microwave ovens.
Keeping as much distance as possible from these devices or using the
camcorders Wi-Fi functions at a different time of day may reduce such
interference.
• Do not point the lens at strong light sources. Do not leave the cam-
corder pointed at a bright subject.
Additional Information Š 175

• Do not use or store the camcorder in dusty or sandy places. The cam-
corder is not waterproof – avoid also water, mud or salt. If any of the
above should get into the camcorder it may damage the camcorder
and/or the lens.
• Be careful of heat generated by lighting equipment.
• Do not disassemble the camcorder. If the camcorder does not function
properly, consult qualified service personnel.
• Handle the camcorder with care. Do not subject the camcorder to
shocks or vibration as this may cause damage.
• When mounting the camcorder on a
5.5 mm
tripod, make sure that the tripods fas-
tening screw is shorter than 5.5 mm
(0.2 in.). Using other tripods may dam-
age the camcorder.
When recording movies, try to get a
calm, stable picture. Excessive cam-
corder movement while shooting and extensive use of fast zooms and
panning can result in jittery scenes. In extreme cases, the playback of
such scenes may result in visually induced moon sickness. If you expe-
rience such a reaction, stop the playbmmeiately and take a rest
break as necessary.
Long-term storage
If you do not intend to use the camcorder for a long time, store it in a
place free of dust, in low humidity, and at temperatures not higher than
30 °C (86 °F).
Battery Pack
DANGER!
Treat the battery pack with care.
• Keep it away from fire (or it might explode).
• Do not expose the battery pack to temperature higher than 60 °C
(140 °F). Do not leave it near a heater or inside a car in hot weather.
• Do not try to disassemble or modify it.
• Do not drop it or subject it to shocks.
• Do not get it wet.
176 Š Additional Information

• Dirty terminals may cause a poor contact between the battery pack and
the camcorder. Wipe the terminals with a soft cloth.
Long-term storage
• Store battery packs in a dry place at temperatures no higher than 30 °C
(86 °F).
To extend the battery life of the battery pack, discharge it completely
before storing it.
• Charge and discharge all your battery packs fully at least once a year.
Remaining battery time
When you are using a battery pack that is compatible with Intelligent Sys-
tem, if the remaining battery time displayed is not correct, charge the bat-
tery pack fully. Still, the correct time may not be displayed after a large
number of repeated uses, if a fully charged battery pack is left unused, or
if a battery pack is used for long periods of time in high temperatures. Use
the time shown on the screen as an approximation.
Memory Card
• We recommend backing up ecordings on the memory card onto
your computer. Data may be corrupted or lost due to memory card
defects or exposure to static electricity. Canon shall not be liable for lost
or corrupted data.
• Do not touch or expose the terminals to dust or dirt.
• Do not use memory cards in places subject to strong magnetic fields.
• Do not leave memory cards in places subject to high humidity and high
temperature.
• Do not disassemble, bend, drop, or subject memory cards to shocks
and do not expose them to water.
• Check the direction before inserting the memory card. Forcing a mem-
ory card into the slot if it is not correctly oriented may damage the mem-
ory card or the camcorder.
• Do not attach any labels or stickers on the memory card.
Additional Information Š 177

• Secure Digital (SD) memory cards
have a physical switch to prevent writ-
ing on the card so as to avoid the
accidental erasure of the cards con-
tent. To write-protect the memory card
set the switch to the LOCK position.
LOCK switch
Built-in Rechargeable Lithium Battery
The camcorder has a built-in rechargeable lithium battery to keep the
date/time and other settings. The built-in lithium battery is recharged
while you use the camcorder; however, it will discharge completely if
you do not use the camcorder for about 3 months.
To recharge the built-in lithium battery: Connect the compact power
adapter to the camcorder and leave it connected for 24 hours with the
camcorder off.
Disposal
When you delete movies or initialmemory, only the file allocation
table is altered and stored ata is nphysically erased. When you dis-
pose of the camcorder or memoy card or give either to another per-
son, initialize the camcorder’s built-in memory (6/4only) or
memory card using the [Complete Initialization] option (A 33). Fill it up
with unimportant recordings, and then initialize it again using the same
option. This makes recovering the original recordings very difficult.
