Safety precautions

2CAUTION
To prevent injury or fire, take the
following precautions:
• Insert the unit all the way in until it is fully locked
in place. Otherwise it may fall out of place when
jolted.
To prevent damage to the machine, take
the following precautions:
• Make sure to ground the unit to a negative 12V
DC power supply.
• Do not open the top or bottom covers of the unit.
• When extending the ignition, battery, or ground
wires, make sure to use automotive-grade wires
or other wires with a 0.75mm² (AWG18) or more
to prevent wire deterioration and damage to the
wire coating.
• To prevent a short circuit, never put or leave any
metallic objects (such as coins or metal tools)
inside the unit.
• Do not install the unit in a spot exposed to direct
sunlight or excessive heat or humidity. Also avoid
places with too much dust or the possibility of
water splashing.
• Do not set the removed faceplate or the faceplate
case in areas exposed to direct sunlight, excessive
heat or humidity. Also avoid places with too much
dust or the possibility of water splashing.
• If the unit starts to emit smoke or strange smells,
turn off the power immediately and consult your
Kenwood dealer.
• To prevent deterioration, do not touch the
terminals of the unit or faceplate with your
fingers.
• Make sure not to get your fingers caught between
the faceplate and the unit.
• Do not subject the faceplate to excessive shock,
as it is a piece of precision equipment.
• Be careful not to drop the unit or subject it to
strong shock.
The unit may break or crack because it contains
glass parts.
• When replacing a fuse, only use a new one with
the prescribed rating. Using a fuse with the wrong
rating may cause your unit to malfunction.
• To prevent a short circuit when replacing a fuse,
first disconnect the wiring harness.
• Do not place any object between the faceplate
and the unit.
• Do not apply excessive force to the moving
faceplate. Doing so will cause damage or
malfunction.
• Do not apply excessive force to the open
faceplate or place objects on it. Doing so will
cause damage or breakdown.
• Do not use your own screws. Use only the screws
provided. If you use the wrong screws, you could
damage the unit.

Safety precautions
About CD players/disc changers
connected to this unit
KENWOOD disc changers/ CD players released in
1998 or later can be connected to this unit.
Refer to the catalog or consult your Kenwood
dealer for connectable models of disc changers/
CD players.
Note that any KENWOOD disc changers/ CD players
released in 1997 or earlier and disc changers made
by other makers cannot be connected to this unit.
Unsupported connection may result in damage.
Setting the "O-N" Switch to the "N" position for the
applicable KENWOOD disc changers/ CD players.
The functions that can be used and the information
that can be displayed will differ depending on the
models being connected.
NOTE
• If you experience problems during installation,
consult your Kenwood dealer.
• If the unit fails to operate properly, press the Reset
button. The unit returns to factory settings when
the Reset button is pressed. If the unit still fails to
operate properly after the Reset button has been
pressed, contact your local KENWOOD dealer for
assistance.
• Press the reset button if the disc auto changer fails
to operate correctly. Normal operation should be
restored.
•
You can damage both your unit and the CD changer if
you connect them incorrectly.
Reset button
• The illustrations of the display and the panel
appearing in this manual are examples used to
explain more clearly how the controls are used.
Therefore, what appears on the display in the
illustrations may differ from what appears on
the display on the actual equipment, and some
of the illustrations on the display may represent
something impossible in actual operation.
LX-bus connection
The LX AMP and the sensor unit cannot be
connected simultaneously.
You must connect any of them at a time.
(The power supply does not turn ON if you have
connected both of them.)
Lens Fogging
In cold climates, there may be a period after you
turn on your vehicle’s heater when the lens that
guides the laser beam used in your MD player fogs
up. If this happens, you cannot play mini discs. Take
out discs and the fogging will disappear. If it does
not return to normal after several hours, contact
your Kenwood dealer.

Notes
Cleaning the Unit
Handling Mini discs
If the faceplate of this unit is stained, wipe it
with a dry soft cloth such as a silicon cloth.
If the faceplate is stained badly, wipe the
stain off with a cloth moistened with neutral
cleaner, then wipe neutral detergent off.
• The MD shutter is designed so that it cannot
be opened. If forced open, the cartridge will be
damaged and use of the MD will no longer be
possible. If the shutter has been opened due to
some cause, be careful not to touch the recording
portion with a finger. Doing so will cause the
sound to skip.
•
Applying spray cleaner directly to the unit may
affect its mechanical parts. Wiping the faceplate
with a hard cloth or using a volatile liquid such as
thinner or alcohol may scratch the surface or erases
characters.
Cleaning the Faceplate Terminals
If the terminals on the unit or faceplate get
dirty, wipe them with a dry, soft cloth.
• Do not use an MD that has a peeling label. Use of
an MD that has a loose or peeling label may cause
problems, such as the label coming off inside the
player and the resultant inability to eject the MD.
• Wipe away dirt or dust from the cartridge surface
with a dry cloth before use. Using an oil-soiled
cartridge in particular may result in the disc not
loading or being unable to eject it. (At time of
cleaning, be careful not to open the shutter.)
About GSM Hands Free Unit
Refer to the instruction manual of GSM Hands
Free Unit KCA-HF521 (optional accessory),
when connected, for the operation method.
The locations of the buttons to be pressed are
shown below.
• Do not leave the MD in the unit for a prolonged
period. The ejected MD should be placed in an
MD case for storage.

• Do not leave the MD in a place exposed to direct
sunlight (such as on a instrument panel) or in
other places that reach high temperatures. The
MD cartridge will become misshapen and will no
longer be usable.
• MDs designed for use with data cannot be used.
Please use MDs designed for music.

• Do not use lens cleaners. Doing so will lead to
breakdown.
CLASS 1
LASER PRODUCT
US and foreign patents Iicensed from Dolby
Laboratories Licensing Corporation.
The label is attached to the chassis/case and
says that the component uses laser beams that
have been classified as Class 1. It means that
the unit is utilizing laser beams that are of a
weaker class. There is no danger of hazardous
radiation outside the unit.
This Product is not installed by the
manufacturer of a vehicle on the production
line, nor by the professional importer of a
vehicle into an EU Member State.

Notes on playing MD Group
This unit is equipped with the group management
function that enables quick search for a track you
want to listen from the grouped MDs (MDs with
group registration thereafter).
(Refer to the instruction manual of home audio
equipped with the group function or another
equipment for the creation of MD.)

Faceplate Angle Adjustment
Theft Deterrent Faceplate
The faceplate of the unit can be detached and
taken with you, helping to deter theft.
Press the [ANG] button for at least 1 second.
Removing the Faceplate
Press the Release button.
The faceplate is unlocked, allowing you to detach
it.
•
Do not apply excessive force to the faceplate. It can
cause damage.
•
•
The faceplate is a precision piece of equipment and
can be damaged by shocks or jolts. For that reason,
keep the faceplate in its special storage case while
detached.
Do not expose the faceplate or its storage case to
direct sunlight or excessive heat or humidity. Also
avoid places with too much dust or the possibility of
water splashing.
Reattaching the Faceplate
1 Align the shaft on the unit with the
depression on the faceplate.
2 Push the faceplate in until it clicks.
The faceplate is locked in place, allowing you to
use the unit.

TEL Mute
The audio system automatically mutes when a
call comes in.
When a call comes in
"CALL" is displayed.
The audio system pauses.
Listening to the audio during a call
Press the [SRC] button.
The "CALL" display disappears and the audio
system comes back ON.
When the call ends
Hang up the phone.
The "CALL" display disappears and the audio
system comes back ON.

1 Select the band for Auto Memory Entry
Press the [FM] or [AM] button.
2 Enter Menu mode
Press the [MENU] button for at least 1 second.
"Menu" is displayed.
3 Select the Auto Memory Entry mode
Press the [FM] or [AM] button.
Select the "A-Memory" display.
4 Open Auto Memory Entry
Press the [4] or [¢] button for at least 2
seconds.
When 6 stations that can be received are put in
the memory Auto Memory Entry closes.

When the 'AF (Alternative Frequency)' (page 28) is ON,
only RDS stations are put in the memory.
When Auto Memory Entry is done in the FM2 band,
the RDS stations preset in the FM1 band aren’t put in
the memory.
Likewise, when it is done in the FM3 band, RDS
stations preset in FM1 or FM2 aren’t put in the
memory.

Traffic Information
Radio Text Scroll
Switching to traffic information automatically
when a traffic bulletin starts even when you aren’t
listening to the radio.
Scrolling the displayed radio text.
Press the [DISP] button for at least 1 second.
Press the [TI] button.
Each time the button is pressed the Traffic
Information function turns ON or OFF.
When it’s ON, "Traffic INFO ON" is displayed.
When a traffic information station isn’t being
received the "TI" indicator blinks.
PTY (Program Type)
Selecting the Program Type and searching for a
station.
1 Enter PTY mode
Press the [PTY] button.
During PTY mode the "PTY Select" is displayed.
When a traffic bulletin starts, "Announcement" is
displayed it and it switches to traffic information.

During reception of an AM station when the Traffic
Information function is turned ON, it switches to an
FM station.
During reception of traffic information the adjusted
volume is automatically remembered, and the next
time it switches to traffic information it’s automatically
the remembered volume.

This function can’t be used during a traffic bulletin or
AM reception.
2 Select the Program Type
Press the [FM] or [AM] button.
Each time the button is pressed the Program

When the connection is made as in 3 above, the unit’s
power will not be linked to the ignition key. For that
reason, always make sure to turn off the unit’s power
when the ignition is turned off.
To link the unit’s power to the ignition, connect the
ignition cable (ACC...red) to a power source that can be
turned on and off with the ignition key.

Screwing the Faceplate on the Unit
If you want to fasten the faceplate to the main
unit so that it does not fall off, screw in the
provided screws in the holes shown below.

1 Engage the catch pins on the removal tool and
remove the two locks on the upper level.
Upper the frame and pull it forward as shown in
the figure.
1 Refer to the section 'Removing the hard rubber
frame' (page 36) and then remove the hard
rubber frame.
2 Remove the screw (M4 × 8) on the back panel.
3 Insert the two removal tools deeply into the slots
on each side, as shown.

Troubleshooting Guide
What might seem to be a malfunction in your unit
may just be the result of slight misoperation or
miswiring. Before calling service, first check the
following table for possible problems.
? No sound can be heard, or the volume is low.

The fader or balance settings are set all the way to
one side.

The input/output wires or wiring harness are
connected incorrectly.

Reconnect the input/output wires or the

The unit is malfunctioning for some reason.

"E-77" code does not disappear, consult

Mecha Error: Something is wrong with the disc
magazine. Or the unit is malfunctioning for
some reason.

press the reset button on the unit. If the
"Mecha Error" code does not disappear,
consult your nearest service center.
Hold Error:
The protective circuit in the unit activates
when the temperature inside the
automatic disc changer exceeds 60°C
(140°F), stopping all operation.
➪ Cool down the unit by opening
the windows or turning on the air
conditioner. As the temperature falls
below 60°C (140°F), the disc will start
playing again.
No Name:
Attempted to display DNPS during the CD
play having no disc names preset.
