Installation
Ensure that the mains supply in your house complies with that indicated on the identification sticker
located at the back of your device. Install the device horizontally, on a suitable base (solid unit with a non-
slippery surface), with enough space around it for ventilation (7 to 10 cm). Make sure the ventilation slots
are not covered. Your device is equipped with a fan which produces a slight hum. Do not stack other
devices, or heavy equipment on top of your machine. Do not place it on amplifiers or other equipment
which may give off heat. Before moving the device, ensure the disc tray is empty. This device is designed
for continuous use. Switching it into stand-by mode does not interrupt its power supply. If the device is
to be left unused for a long period of time or in the event of a thunderstorm, we recommend that you
unplug the device from the mains. The power socket must therefore be easily accessible.

with the label facing upward (in case of a single-sided disc). Always place the disc properly into the tray
using the proper guide area. Always use a soft cloth to clean discs if necessary, wipe from the centre to

Satellite set-up
Satellite or cable receiver
Your DMR is designed to control a satellite receiver. For this purpose, the satellite
receiver must be connected to the AV2 and IR SAT/CABL sockets of the DMR. Before
you connect your satellite receiver to your DMR, you need to set up all the channels on
the satellite receiver (receiver directly connected to the TV set) and check that you can
view them on your TV set. Then connect the devices as described below.
IR controller cell
Satellite receiver
TV set
DTH 7000 E
Adjusting your DMR’s IR (infrared) controller cell
You need to find the correct positioning of the IR controller cell in relation to the front of the
satellite or cable receiver so that your DMR can transmit the commands as you would do with
the satellite receiver’s remote control. The IR (infrared) controller cell must face the receiver
cell of the satellite receiver. You can locate the receiver cell of the satellite receiver by
bringing its remote control as close as possible to the front of the device and trying to change
channels. Move the remote control one centimetre and try again. When the channel of the
satellite receiver changes, locate the position on the front of the unit. Then install the IR
controller cell as shown on the diagram below, facing the cell of the satellite receiver (1 or 2
cm away). If need be, use the adhesive supplied to stick the cell in place.

Digital audio output setting
Depending on the amplifier or television (with or without integrated decoder) connected to
your DVD player, you will need to set the DIGITALAUDIO OUT sockets (coaxial or optical)
so that they deliver the Dolby Digital (1) or DTS (2) digital signals supported by the other
device (3). Tick Dolby Digital or DTS if the amplifier or TV set has a Dolby Digital or
DTS decoder (or both, depending on devices).
(4)
SRS - TruSurround
This function provides you with virtual reproduction of the multichannel sound of a Dolby or
DTS film onto the two channels of your TV or stereo amplifier. The sound effects of a 5.1
system are then simulated.

compression technique elaborated by Dolby
Laboratories for digital audio multichannel
signals. The Dolby Digital system enables any
audio channel configuration, from a stereo
sound (2 channels) up to the digital
“surround” sound 5.1.
If the device connected to the DIGITAL
AUDIO OUT sockets does not support Dolby
or DTS signals, your player will deliver PCM
(Pulse Code Modulation) signals. In that case,
neither Dolby Digital, nor DTS must be ticked.
The linear PCM is a signal recording format

• Not all TV can be operated with this
universal remote control.
• Try to find the most efficient code for your
brand (for brands with several codes).
• Try out which functions you can control with
the remote control.
If you have replaced the batteries of
the remote control, perform the
remote control set-up again.
About the TV/DMR key
With some TVs, video from your DMR takes priority and is displayed on the screen. In this
case, you can no longer change channels on the TV, either by using your DMR’s remote
control unit set to the TV position (by pressing the
key) or by using the TV’s remote
control unit. You can therefore no longer record one channel’s programmes on the hard disk
of your DMR while watching another channel on the TV. If you want to watch one channel
while recording programmes on another channel, you must change the AV1 output
connection setting by selecting Video instead of RGB in the Options menu. See pages 50 and
51 of your user manual for details of how to change the AV1 output connection setting.

Naviclick update
Some channels may modify the layout of their Teletext broadcast. In such a case, and unless
the structure is totally changed, you will have to update the number of the first Teletext page
allocated to the TV guide for the Naviclick function to start working again. The list of pages
is usually included in the Teletext broadcast. Use your TV sets Teletext function to find this
information. Look for the page number for the days programs and the following days page
number.
From step 2. above, select channel Page and press ok. The first number is that of the
day’s programs and the second is that of the following day’s programs. The menu which
appears shows 2 Teletext page numbers for each channel (the first number is that of the day’s
programs and the second is that of the following day’s programs).
To update this information, use the navigation keys to place yourself on the channel to be
modified. Then use the number keys to enter the 2 numbers of the correct page.

If you have a problem
Troubleshooting guide
• The image format is adjustable. Refer to pages
34 and 35. With certain discs, the format is pre-
set and cannot be changed.
Nothing works
Your DMR doesn’t switch on.
• Did you move the DMR ? Check the power
plug: is it well plugged into the mains socket?
Also check the power cable jack at the rear of
the DMR; is it well pushed in.
• Is the mains socket to which you DMR is
connected receiving current ?
Try to plug in a lamp or other electrical device:
do they work ? Check the corresponding fuse in
your house’s fuse box.
Sound problems
No sound
• Check that the DTS and Dolby Digital settings
are suited to the specifications of the device
connected to the digital audio sockets (coaxial
or optical) (k page 50).
The sound is very low or inaudible.
The remote control doesn’t work.
• The sound of the TV set has been cut or set at a
very low level. Press the ( ) key on your TV
set’s remote control and/or adjust the volume on
your TV set (or amplifier, if such is the case).
• To control your DMR, the function selector on
the remote control must be on the dvd position.
• Point the remote control at the front of your
DMR, not at your TV set.
LThe operating range of the remote control is 6
to 8 metres. It gradually decreases as the
batteries wear down. This is a good indicator of
the state of the batteries.
• Make sure no objects (or animals) are in the
path of the infrared beam between the remote
control and your DMR. They may block the
beam and thereby cause a malfunction of your
DMR.
• The batteries may be worn. Replace them.
Ensure correct polarities (+, -).
The sound of the headphones plugged into the
front of the DMR is too loud or too quiet.
• Adjust the volume. Refer to pages 24 and 25.
Menu problems
The menus or subtitles do not appear in the
language you want.
• With a DVD: the DVD menus are not displayed
in your language. Check the disc jacket to see
which languages are available. Choose the
language of your choice, if available (k page
46).
• With a DVD: there are no subtitles. Check the
disc jacket to see whether subtitles are
available. Choose the subtitles of your choice, if
available (k page 47).
• The preferred language for DVD dialogues and
subtitles was set upon initial installation of your
DMR. To change it, refer to pages 46 and 47.
You can also change languages during disc
playback by pressing the red key ( )) for
dialogues and the green key ( ) for
subtitles. This selection is only valid for that
disc, as long as it is not removed from the disc
tray.
The remote control of your DMR also controls
another device.
• Some DVD players made by the Thomson
group (Thomson, Brandt, Ferguson, Saba,
Téléfunken) react to the same codes. To avoid
this inconvenience, you can program your
DMR and its remote control so they have a
different code to those of the other devices.
Refer to page 59.
The remote control and the DMR don’t work
anymore: everything seems blocked.
• Unplug your DMR from the mains for a few
moments and plug it back in.
The menus of your DMR do not appear in the
language you want.
• Check that your language is available in the
settings menu (k page 46). If not, choose
another language.
Picture problems
You don’t see any picture.
• Turn on your TV set and your DMR.
• On your TV set, select the socket which
receives the signals from your DMR (AV1,
TV1, AUX1, etc., depending on the make, if
connected as shown on page 8 or 19).
• Make sure that all connectors are well pushed
into the various sockets.
You can’t access the selected menu, even when
you press ok.
• If the name of the menu appears on
a
transparent background, it means that the
corresponding menu or function is not available.
The Disc, Video, Music, Pictures and Card
menus are contextual menus: they depend on
operations performed beforehand such as:
- Disc is only accessible if there is a disc in the
disc tray of your DMR.
The colours aren’t natural.
• Check that the scart cables are well pushed into
the sockets of the various devices.
The image format doesn’t match the screen
format of your TV set.

If you have a problem
STOP key for at least 3 seconds of your DMR.
Release the STANDBY/ON button. Turn off
your DMR then turn it back on by pressing the
STANDBY/ON button at the front of your
DMR. The menu displayed on-screen is the
menu which enables you to choose your DMR’s
display language. It confirms that all settings
made since initial installation have been
deleted. The DMR has been reconfigured as it
was when purchased (factory settings). Refer to
page 5 of this manual to restart the installation
of your DMR.
- Video is only accessible once you have
recorded a TV program or video sequence
(from an external device).
- Music is only accessible if you have copied
an audio file in MP3 format.
- Pictures is only accessible once you have
copied an image in JPEG format.
- Card is only accessible once you have
connected a card reader to the front USB socket
and inserted a card in it.

Your DMR menu disappears.
• As with computers, your DMR has a screen
saver which replaces the fixed menu by a
mobile THOMSON logo. Press on a navigation
key to bring back the fixed menu.
You can’t watch what happened 50 minutes
ago.
Your DMR’s buffer memory stores no more
than 45 minutes of TV programs. If you want to
save more than 45 minutes of program, you have
to record the program you are watching by
pressing the RECORD button. Please note that
you have to record the program right from the
start. As soon as you press RECORD the contents
of the buffer memory is deleted, even after a
pause.
The Carte line in your DMR’s main menu
remains inactive.
• The reader is not recognised by your DMR. The
compatible readers are listed on page 21. They
correspond to the “USB 1.1 Mass Storage
Class”. In certain cases, you need to turn your
DMR off then back on for the reader to be
recognised.
The display or reading of digital images in
JPEG format is slow.
• Image display can take a fairly long time,
depending on the size of the images. If the
images are too “bulky”, your DMR may not be
able to display them correctly.
You can’t switch channels.
• During the recording of a TV program (or video
sequence from a connected device), switching
channels is impossible. To change channels,
you have to stop the recording completely (k
page 41).
Disc playing problems
The TV guide (NAVICLICK) is not displayed.
• Downloading may be disabled. Make sure that
Off is not ticked (k page 54).
• Does the channel broadcast a TV guide ? Check
in the list on page 55.
The DVD doesn’t play, even when you press
the PLAY button.
• The disc rating is higher than the limit that you
have set (k page 49).
Fast forward or rewind doesn’t work.
• Some discs have scenes which do not allow fast
forwarding, rewinding or chapter skips. When a
command is prohibited or is not available for
the current section or operating mode, a
prohibition sign ( ) appears on-screen for a
few moments.
In quiet moments, you hear a slight hum
coming from your DMR.
Your DMR is equipped with a fan. It releases
heat in order to ensure proper cooling. It
switches on as soon as your DMR is turned on
and produces a slight hum.
The display or reading of digital images in
JPEG format is slow.
• Image display can take a fairly long time,
depending on the size of the images. If the
images are too “bulky”, your DMR may not be
able to display them correctly.
You can’t change the camera angle.
• Most DVDs do not have multiple viewing
angles. When this option is available, it usually
only applies to a few scenes.
Other problems
The time occupied by JPEG images or MP3
files copied onto the hard disc is not indicated
on the banners.
• The only way to find out how much time is
available on your hard disc is by recording a TV
program or a video sequence (from an external
device). It is then indicated on the banner
(k page 28).
You forgot the secret code for the Child Lock.
• To unlock your DMR, you have to enter the
secret code that you chose. If you have
forgotten it, follow the instructions below:
Open the disc tray and make sure there is no
disc in it. Close the disc tray. While pressing
and holding down your player’s STANDBY/ON
key, press and hold down the remote control’s

CD-Rs and MP3 files - (Recommendations)
About CD-R discs
This unit can play most CD-R discs. However, depending on the condition of the CD-recorder,
computer and the disc used, you may find that not all discs will play successfully. When playing a
CD-R disc, it is completely normal for the unit to take up to 20 seconds to recognize the disc before
starting to play. If the disc is not recognized after a period of 20 seconds, remove the disc, and then
insert it again. If after several trials, this disc cannot be recognized, make sure you have followed
the recommendations below or try another type of disc. There are two main types of recordable
CDs:
- CD-R audio discs (for music only), which should be used when recording with Hifi CD-audio
recorder.
- CD-R Data discs are designed for recording via a CD writer on a personal computer. Use these
discs as a preference.
• Whatever the real recording capacity of the CD-R, do not use more than 630 Mb of recording space on
the disc.
• As a preference, opt for 74-min (650 Mb) CD-Rs instead of 80-min (700 Mb) CD-Rs.
• As a preference, opt for CD-Rs instead of CD-RWs (rewritable CDs) as, in certain cases, CD-RW
playback may be faulty.
• Use reliable, good-quality CD writing software.
• Close all other applications on the computer to ensure reliable CD-R disc recording.
Make sure that the recording is “long enough” to be played. If the recording is too short, disc
identification time may be increased.
About MP3 files copied onto CD-Rs
In the case of CD-R MP 3 discs, please follow all the recommendations for CD-R above, plus the
comments below:
Format
Your MP3 files should be ISO 9660 or JOLIET format. ISO 9660 format and Joliet MP3 files are
compatible with Microsoft’s DOS and Windows, and with Apple’s Mac. These two formats are the most
widely used.
Name
When naming your MP3 files do not exceed 12 characters, and place “.mp3” as the file extension.
General name format of: Title.mp3. When composing your title ensure that you use 8 characters or less,
have no spaces in the name, and avoid the use of special characters including ( . , / , \ , = ,+).
Compression
Use a decompression transfer rate of at least 128 kb/sec (kilobytes/second) when recording MP3
files. Sound quality with MP3 files basically depends on the rate of compression/decompression you
choose. Getting audio CD quality sound requires an analog/digital sampling rate, that is conversion to
MP3 format, of at least 128 kb/sec and up to 160 kb/sec. However, choosing higher rates, like 192
kb/sec or more, only rarely give even better sound quality. Conversely, files with sampling rates below
128 kb/sec will not be played properly.
Protection
Do not try recording copyright protected MP3 files. “securized” files are encrypted and code protected
to prevent illegal copying. These files are of the following types: Windows Media™ (registered trade mark
of Microsoft Inc) and SDMI™ (registered trade mark of The SDMI Foundation). You must not copy such
files.
1
Important: The above recommendations cannot be taken as a guarantee that the DVD player will play
MP3 recordings, or as an assurance of sound quality. You should note that certain technologies and
methods for MP3 file recording on CD-Rs prevent optimal playback of these files on your DVD player
(that is degraded sound quality and even, in some cases, inability of the player to read the file or files).
