Before you can use your new Sprint PCS Phone, you need to activate
your phone and establish your Sprint PCS Account. To do that, simply
call us toll-free at 1-888-715-4588 from any phone other than your
new Sprint PCS Phone. (In southern California, call 1-888-PCS-6699.)
What you should know before you call.

If a Sprint PCS Sales Representative has already activated your
phone, there’s no need to place this call. Instead, see “How to
unlock your phone” on the next page.

This call typically takes about 30 minutes, but may take longer at
peak times.

Your Sprint PCS Phone will be ready for use about an hour after
this call is finished.

Using the dial.
What they tell you.
The dial makes it easy to navigate through your phone’s features.
Symbols on the display screen tell you what your options are and
how to proceed.
Display icons are the symbols your phone uses to communicate
important information.
Short
Character
Display
When you are using your phone’s Features menu,
you will see an “F” followed by a two-digit number.
The two-digit number lets you know which menu
item you are accessing. For example, F51 indicates
the Key Guard function. (See page 57 for a complete
list of menu items and numbers.) When you are
using the phone book or Calls List, you will see the
location of the number you’ve accessed. (See page
27 for more information on the phone book and
page 35 for information on the Calls List.)
Scrolling through m enus.
Curved arrows on the screen (
) indicate that you can access
more options or more information by turning the dial. For example,
on the standby screen you will see curved arrows preceding the
words “Phone List.” When you turn the dial from the standby screen,
you will see the two Phone List options: “Calls List” and “Phone
Book.” Turn the dial again and you will see either the first entry in
your Calls List or the first entry in your phone book. (See page 27 for
more information on the phone book and Calls List.) When only one
curved arrow is displayed, the phone is prompting to you to turn the
dial in that one direction.

by pressing the dial in toward the center of the phone. For example,
on the standby screen you will see an arrow preceding the word
“Features.” When you press the dial, you will see the table of contents

Battery
Shows the level of your battery charge. The more
black you see, the more power you have left. When
the battery is empty, the icon blinks and an alert tone
is sounded. Shortly thereafter, the phone turns off.

Messages menu. To select a different menu from the table of con-
tents, just turn the dial until the arrow points to the menu you want,
then press the dial to select it. (See page 41 for more information on
the Features menu.)
Battery: Putting in
the pow er.
Your new Sprint PCS Phone comes with a rechargeable battery.
Be sure to keep your battery charged in order to get the most talk
time and standby time. When the phone is in standby mode, your
battery’s charge should last approximately 20 hours. When your
phone is used continuously, the charge will last about two hours.
Backing out of a m enu.
If you want to go back to the previous screen, press

want to return to the standby display, press

Installing and rem oving your battery pack.
To install the battery pack, simply place it into the top of the
opening at a 45 angle and gently slide the battery pack down
until the latch clicks.
To remove the battery pack, turn the phone upside down and
press the battery release latch up while lifting the battery pack
out of the phone.
Charging your battery.
You can tell whether or not your battery needs to be recharged just
by checking the upper-right corner of your phone’s display screen.
The more black you see in the battery icon, the more power you
have left. When the battery is nearly empty, the battery icon will blink,

the phone will sound a tone, then very soon the phone will turn off.
Unfortunately, you’ll lose whatever you were just doing if this happens.
So, watch the battery icon to make sure the level is sufficient.
Charging w ith the phone turned on.
The battery icon (
) will flash to let you know that the
battery is charging. When the icon stops flashing, the battery is fully
charged.
To charge your batteries, use only an approved AC adapter, desktop
charger, cigarette lighter adapter, travel adapter or hands-free car kit.
(For more information on these accessories, see the product user
guide for each.)
Charging w hen the phone is off.
When your phone is turned off, the display screen will display the
message “Battery is Charging, Power is Off” and the battery icon
(
) will flash. When the battery is fully charged, the display

Be careful to use only the AC adapter you received with your Sprint
PCS Phone or another approved charger. Using the wrong one could
damage your phone and invalidate your warranty.
Thanks to your phone’s special design, you can recharge the battery
using only the AC adapter. Simply attach one end of the AC adapter to
the connector at the bottom of your phone and plug the other end
into a standard wall outlet. If your battery’s charge is completely run
down, it’ll take approximately three hours to fully recharge. It isn’t
necessary to let the battery completely run down before recharging it.

Adjusting the volum e.
Redialing calls.
The dial adjusts the earpiece volume during a call. Simply rotate the
dial to obtain the volume you want. To adjust the ringer volume,
rotate the dial while the phone is ringing.
To redial the last call you made from your Sprint PCS Phone, just
extend the mouthpiece and press

use your Calls List to redial any of the last 10 calls that you either
placed, received, missed or added to your Scratch Pad. (See page 35

Silencing the ringer.
If you want to silence the ring of all incoming calls, turn the dial down
while the phone is ringing or use the Sounds menu to turn the ringer
off (see page 43). The Sounds menu also lets you set your phone to
vibrate rather than ring.
Preparing your ow n em ergency num bers.
You can save up to three emergency phone numbers on your Sprint
PCS Phone in addition to 911. These numbers can be dialed even if

your phone is locked. To save your three emergency numbers, follow

This feature tells you who is calling by displaying the caller’s number
when the phone rings. If the caller’s name and number are stored in

Phone Number will be displayed on their phone.
Responding to Call Waiting.
If you’re in the middle of a call and hear two beeps, that means you
have another incoming call. To put the first party on hold and answer
the second call, press

With Call Forwarding, all of your incoming calls can be forwarded
to another phone number — even if your Sprint PCS Phone is
turned off. You can still make calls from your Sprint PCS Phone
when Call Forwarding is activated. To activate Call Forwarding,
follow these steps:

Your Sprint PCS Phone alerts you in several ways when you have new
voicemail messages:

internal phone book and the Calls List. All the basic features and
functions of your phone book are described below. See page 35
for instructions on how to use your Calls List.

If the ringer volume is set to “vibration,” the phone will vibrate
rather than sound an alert when you receive a message.
Understanding your phone’s internal
phone book.
Your Sprint PCS Phone has 98 phone book memory locations —
that is, 98 places to store phone numbers with names. Each phone
number can include up to 32 digits and each name can have up to
12 characters.
To acknowledge the notification of a new message, simply press any
key. Your phone will again display whatever was on the screen before
the alert. You can have up to 30 new or saved voicemail messages
and each can be stored for up to 30 days.
Saving and storing a phone num ber.
Retrieving m essages.
When adding numbers to your internal phone book, keep in mind
that location 1 is reserved for your voicemail box. Memory locations
2 through 9 should be reserved for your most commonly used phone
numbers. To save numbers, simply follow the directions below.
To listen to your messages, simply extend the mouthpiece and press
for at least two seconds. The automated voicemail system
will tell you how to proceed. For more information on your voicemail,
see page 42.

1. Enter the phone number you want to save. We suggest that you
save numbers using 10 digits (area code + number) so you can
dial them from your phone book while traveling outside your

dial. The Options menu will then be displayed.

The key guard feature prevents your phone from accidentally dialing
when you press a key unintentionally. To activate the key guard, press
and hold the dial while the phone is in standby. The keypad will be
disabled and the backlight and key beeps will be turned off until the
key guard is deactivated. To deactivate it, just extend the mouthpiece

Using your Calls List.
Your Sprint PCS Phone keeps a list of the last 10 calls you made,
received, missed or added to your Scratch Pad. To review this list,
just follow these steps:
1. Beginning from the standby display, turn the dial once to display
the “Phone List” menu.
2. Turn the dial up to select “Calls List.” Information on the most
recent call will be displayed first.

Sending touch-tone signals from
the phone book.
You can also use your phone to send touch-tone signals (also called
DTMF signals) to access electronic services. Simply put, this means
you can store a series of numbers (such as a personal identification
number) to have at your fingertips whenever you need it.
Inserting a pause or link into a num ber.
1. Enter the first part of the number.
1. First, store the series of numbers as a phone book entry.
2. Press the dial where you want to insert a pause or link. The
Options menu will be displayed.

the phone book entry.
3. Turn the dial to select either “Hard Pause,” “Time Pause” or

has been inserted into a phone number will be marked by [H].

indicated by [L].

Keep in mind that this option can only be used during a call. To enter

(such as a credit card number) and save the entry as you would

You can insert a hyphen into a phone number manually or you can
program your phone to insert them automatically (see page 55).
Hyphens are used for appearance only; the phone dials the number
without any delays. To insert a hyphen manually:

is identified by a two-digit number. If you’re in a hurry, just press the
dial and enter the two-digit number of the menu item you want.

þ 22: Mute/Unmute Access this feature when you are on a call and
need to switch the microphone on or off.
When the microphone is muted, the other
party cannot hear you. You can also mute or
unmute the microphone during a call by
pressing and holding the dial.
þ 23: Key Beep
Volume
This adjusts the volume of the beep you hear
when keys are pressed. You can select “off,”
“low,” “medium” and “high.”
þ 28: Message Ring This setting determines how you will be
notified that you have a new message. If you
select “on,” an alert sounds when you receive
a new message. If you select “+ reminder,” a
beep will sound every two minutes to remind
you that you have an unread message. If you
select “off,” beeps will not sound when you
receive new messages. If Ring Volume is set to
“vibration,” the phone will vibrate rather than
ring when a new message is received.
þ 24: Earpiece
Volume
Use this feature to adjust the earpiece volume.
You can also adjust the earpiece volume during
a call by turning the dial.
þ 25: Ringer Type Use this feature to change the sound of your
phone’s ring. As you turn the dial to scroll
through the five possible settings, your phone
will play the ringer options for you.
þ 26: Key Sound
This adjusts the sound your phone makes
when you press a key. Your options are
“tones” and “clicks”. The other party will hear

locked. Your options are: “off,” “on power-up”
and “right now.” If you choose “on power-up,”
your phone will be locked whenever it is turned
on. “Right now” immediately locks the phone.
The default setting is “off.” You can unlock your
phone from the standby display by pressing the
dial. The phone will then prompt you to enter
the lock code.
þ 64: Restrict All
This allows you to restrict access to all num-
bers in your phone book. When this is turned
on, you must enter the four-digit lock code to
access the phone book for any operation.
þ 65: Master Reset Select this feature to reset all menu settings to
the phone’s original default settings. This will
erase all of your custom menu settings, but will
not affect phone book or Calls List entries.
þ 66: Erase Book This function erases your entire phone book at
once. When you select “Erase Book” from the

þ 68: Emergency # You can use the Security menu to store up to
three emergency numbers. You can call these
numbers, 911 and Sprint PCS Customer Care
even when the phone is locked. When dialing

to input any message, such as your name, up to
12 characters long. Enter the characters just as
you would for the phone book. Refer to the

þ 75: Menu Length You can set the menu length to either long or
short. The long menu displays every available
menu item and is the default setting. The short
menu displays only the most commonly used
menu items. The short menu includes:

Your Sprint PCS Phone is basically a radio transmitter and receiver.
When it’s turned on, it receives and transmits radio frequency (RF)
signals. Your phone operates in the frequency range of 1851 MHz to
1989 MHz. The power level can range from approximately 0.01mW
to approximately 300mW. When your phone is in use, the system
handling your call controls the power level.
Keeping tabs on signal strength.
The voice quality of your Sprint PCS Phone will always be at its best
when the antenna is fully raised. If you’re inside a building, reception
may be better near a window.
Radio frequency safety.
The quality of each call you make or receive depends on the signal
strength in your area. Your phone will inform you of the current
strength by displaying a number of bars next to the signal strength
icon. The more bars, the stronger the signal. (See page 10 for an
illustration of the signal strength indicator.)
In 1991-1992, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
(IEEE) and the American National Standards Institutes (ANSI) joined
in updating ANSI’s 1982 standard for safety levels with respect to
human exposure to RF signals. More than 120 scientists, engineers
and physicians from universities, government health agencies and
industries developed this updated standard after reviewing the
available body of research. In 1993, the Federal Communications
Commission (FCC) adopted this updated standard in a regulation.
In August 1996, the FCC adopted a hybrid standard consisting of
the existing ANSI/IEEE standard and the guidelines published by the
National Council of Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP).

If you’re trying to use your phone in an area where there is no
signal, the Power Save feature will automatically activate to conserve
battery power when you’ve been unable to pick up a signal for 15
minutes. If your phone is on, it will periodically recheck service
availability, or you can do so yourself manually by pressing any key.
A message will be displayed on the screen any time Power Save has
been activated.

The design of your Sprint PCS Phone complies with these updated
standards. Of course, if you want to limit RF exposure even further
than the updated standard, you can choose to control the duration of
your calls and operate your phone in the most power-efficient manner.
Protecting your battery.
Follow these guidelines for the best battery performance:
þ Only use approved battery packs and desktop and travel chargers.
These chargers are designed to maximize battery life. Using other
batteries or chargers will void your warranty and may cause
damage as well.
Maintaining your phone’s peak perform ance.
To operate your phone properly — that is, to maintain safe and
satisfactory service — you should follow these rules:
þ To avoid damage, charge the battery only in temperatures ranging
from 40°F to 104°F.
þ For best reception, extend the antenna fully.
þ Hold the phone with the antenna up and over your shoulder.
þ Do not hold the phone antenna at any time.
þ Do not use the phone with a damaged antenna.
þ Speak directly into the mouthpiece.
þ Do not use the battery charger in direct sunlight or in high
humidity areas, such as the bathroom.
þ Never dispose of the battery pack by burning.
þ Keep the metal contacts at the top of the battery pack clean.
þ Do not allow the battery contacts to touch metal materials.
þ Do not attempt to disassemble or short-circuit the battery pack.
To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose your phone or
accessories to rain or moisture. If your phone does get wet,
turn the power off immediately and remove the battery pack. If it is
inoperable, return it to a Sprint PCS Center or call Sprint PCS
Customer Care for service.
þ You may need to recharge the battery if it has not been used for
a long time.
þ Replace the battery when it no longer provides acceptable
performance. It can be recharged hundreds of times before
it will need to be replaced.

Disposal of batteries.
Follow ing safety guidelines.
You can return your unwanted batteries to your nearest Sony Service
Center or Factory Service Center. For the Sony Service Center nearest
you call 1-800-222-SONY (United States only).
To operate your phone safely and efficiently, you should always follow
any special regulations in a given area and turn your phone off in
areas where use is forbidden or when it may cause interference or
danger.
Note: In some areas, the disposal of rechargeable batteries in
household or business trash may be prohibited.
Using your phone near other electronic devices.
Most modern electrical equipment is shielded from radio frequency
(RF) signals. However, RF signals from PCS phones may affect
inadequately shielded electronic equipment.
Using your phone w hile driving.
Talking on the phone while you’re driving may divert your attention
from the road and is illegal in some states. Remember, safety comes
first.
RF signals may affect improperly installed or inadequately shielded
electronic operating and entertainment systems in motor vehicles.
Check with the manufacturer or its representative to determine
if these systems are adequately shielded from external RF signals.
You should also check with the manufacturer regarding any
equipment that has been added to your vehicle.
When using your Sprint PCS Phone in the car:
þ Focus on driving, not talking.
þ Use a Hands-Free Car Kit (optional accessory).
If you must use the phone while driving, please use Speed Dial or
Touch Dial.
Consult the manufacturer of any personal medical devices (such as
pacemakers and hearing aids) to determine if they are adequately
shielded from external RF signals.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY LEAD TO SERIOUS
PERSONAL INJURY AND POSSIBLE PROPERTY DAMAGE.
Turn off the phone in health care facilities and request permission
before using the phone near medical equipment.

Turn off your phone before flying.
Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere are often, but not
always, clearly marked. They include fueling areas such as gas
stations; below deck on boats; fuel or chemical transfer or storage
facilities; areas where the air contains chemicals or particles such as
grain, dust or metal powders; and any other area where you would
normally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine.
You should turn off your Sprint PCS Phone before boarding any
aircraft. To prevent possible interference with aircraft systems, US
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations require you to
have permission from a crew member to use your phone while the
plane is on the ground. To prevent any risk of interference, FCC
regulations prohibit using your phone while the plane is in the air.
Do not transport or store flammable gas, liquid or explosives in the
compartment of your vehicle that contains your phone or accessories.
Restricting children’s access to your phone.
Your Sprint PCS Phone is not a toy and should not be played with by
children. They could hurt themselves and others, damage the phone
or make calls that increase your telephone bills.
Cautions.
Any changes or modifications to your Sprint PCS Phone not expressly
approved in this document could void your warranty for this equip-
ment and void your authority to operate this equipment. Only use
approved batteries, antennas and chargers. The use of any other type
will invalidate the warranty.
Turn off your phone in dangerous areas.
To avoid interfering with blasting operations, turn off your phone
when in a blasting area or in other areas with signs indicating that
two-way radios should be turned off. Construction crews often use
remote-control RF devices to set off explosives.
FCC notice.
The phone may cause TV or radio interference if used in close
proximity to receiving equipment. The FCC can require you to
stop using the phone if such interference cannot be eliminated.
