Hard disk drive

Ergonomic considerations

Whenever possible, try and take into account the following ergonomic considerations when using your new

computer, whether at home or in the office:

Position of the keyboard and mouse – Place the keyboard directly in front of you (1). Keep your

forearms horizontal, with your wrists in a neutral, comfortable position (2) while using the keyboard or

mouse – not at an angle. Let your upper arms hang naturally at your sides. Use the palm rest only briefly,

to relax your wrists when you are not typing. Place the mouse at the same level as the keyboard and use

your whole arm to move it.

Position and viewing angle of the monitor – Set the display at a comfortable viewing distance (3).

Make sure the display screen is at eye level or slightly lower. Use the display’s tilting feature to find the

best position. You can reduce eye-strain and muscle-fatigue by adjusting the tilt of the display to the

proper position. Remember to adjust the brightness setting of the display.

Furniture and posture – Sit in a chair with good back support (4). Adjust the level of the chair so your

feet are flat on the floor. A footrest may make you more comfortable. Sit in a relaxed, upright posture

and avoid slouching forward or leaning too far backwards.

Lighting – Choose a location where windows and lights do not create glare or reflection on the display.

Use indirect lighting to avoid bright spots reflecting on the display. You can also purchase accessories for

your display that help reduce glare. Proper lighting adds to your comfort and work effectiveness.

Ventilation – Make sure you leave at least 25cm of space behind and on the left of the main unit (5).

And finally – Remember to have breaks during sessions with your computer. Excessive use of the

computer may strain muscles or tendons.

Adjusting the viewing angle

To adjust the height and viewing angle of the display, proceed as follows:

Hold both sides of the display, pull the display out towards you, and upwards.

Set the display height so it does not touch the keyboard, and adjust the viewing angle approximately

27 degrees from eye level to the center of the screen.

Starting your computer

To start your computer the first time, you can either:

Press the power button on the system unit until the green power indicator light turns on (1).

Press the Standby button (2) above the numbered PPKs on the keyboard until the green power indicator

light on the main unit turns on.

Once you have started using your computer, you can use the Programmable Power Buttons (PPK) on the

keyboard to start your system and launch your favorite application automatically.

If you press the power button for more than four seconds, the computer will switch itself off.

Shutting down your computer

It is important that you shut down your computer properly so you do not lose unsaved data.

To shut down your computer, proceed as follows:

Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar.

Click Shut Down...

The Shut Down Windows dialog box appears.

Select Shut down.

Click OK.

Wait for your computer to turn off automatically.

The power indicator turns off.

Turn off any peripherals connected to your computer.

Respond to any prompts warning you to save documents.

If you are unable to shut down your computer:

- Close all software in use.

- Remove the PC Card, if applicable. To do so, double-click the Unplug or Eject Hardware icon in the taskbar. Select the hardware you want to

unplug and click Stop.

- Disconnect any USB devices.

- Press the <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Delete> keys at the same time and select Shut Down to turn the computer off.

If this does not work, you can press the power button for more than four seconds. This will shut down the computer. This operation may result in loss

of data.

If you want to shut down the computer for a short period only, you can save power by using the Standby mode.

Click the Registration icon on your desktop.

Click Next.

Click Internet.

Fill in your Registration card fields.

Scroll down to the bottom of the form and click Send.

Click OK.

You must connect your phone line before you can use any online services, including the online registration service.

To access the online Registration Web page, you must have an Internet connection.

As your VAIO desktop does not come with an internal modem, you will need to set up and configure an external modem before you can make use of

these communication features.

The <Esc> (Escape) key is used to cancel commands

The twelve function keys along the top of the keyboard are used to

perform designated tasks. For example, in many applications, <F1> is the

Help key. The task associated with each function key may vary from one

application to another.

Correction keys (3)

Print Screen key (4)

The <Insert>, <Back Space> and <Delete> keys enable you to make

corrections when typing.

The <Prt Sc> key takes an electronic snapshot of the screen and moves it

to the Windows^®Clipboard. You can then paste the screenshot into a

document and print it.

Standby button (5)

Press this button either to start up your computer, or to enter Standby

mode, or to resume from a power saving mode.

Programmable Power Keys (PPK) (6)

You can use these buttons, numbered 1 to 4, to launch straight into

assigned applications.

Numeric keypad area (7)

This contains the keys found on a typical calculator. Use the numeric

keypad area to type numbers or to perform mathematical calculations such

as addition and subtraction. Note that you must press the <Num Lock> key

to activate the keypad.

Navigation keys (8)

These keys enable you to move the cursor on the screen.

Application key

The Application key displays a shortcut menu; pressing this key is

equivalent to clicking the right mouse button.

Several keys are used in combination with at least one other key: <Ctrl>,

<Alt> and <Shift>. When held down at the same time as another key, the

<Ctrl> (Control) and <Alt> (Alternate) keys offer another way to execute

commands. For example, in many applications, instead of choosing the

Save command from a menu, you can hold down <Ctrl> and press S

(referred to as <Ctrl>+<S>). The <Shift> key is used to type capital letters

or special symbols such as @ and $.

The key with the Windows^®logo displays the Windows^®Start menu; it

is equivalent to clicking the Start button on the taskbar.

Press Caps Lock once to activate the uppercase characters. Use the Num

Lock key to activate the numerical keypad.

A green light indicates whether the Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll

Lock functions are active.

Using programmable power keys (PPK)

Press a programmable power key to start your favorite software without having to click the shortcuts on the

desktop.

Use a programmable power key simply by pressing it.

Even when your computer is off, you can press a PPK to start the system and launch the appropriate

application automatically.

If you want to, you can use VAIO Action Setup to change the functions of the PPKs.

The default settings for the PPK buttons are:

P1: Starts Microsoft Outlook Express

P2: Connects you to the Club VAIO website

P3: Starts Sony’s PictureGear

P4: Starts VAIO Help

Using the mouse

The VAIO wheel mouse allows you to control the cursor in a number of ways. You can point to, select, drag,

and scroll objects on the screen using the buttons and the wheel.

the movement by moving the entire mouse. (The scroll function is available only with applications that support a

scroll feature.)

Using the CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive

Your computer is equipped with a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive.

To insert a disc, proceed as follows:

Turn on the computer.

Press the Eject button to open the drive.

The tray slides out.

Place a CD-RW/DVD-ROM/CD-R/CD-ROM in the left-hand side of the tray with the label side facing

outwards. Use the hinges to secure the disc.

Close the tray by pushing it gently.

When the computer is in Standby or Hibernate mode, you cannot insert or remove a disc.

Be sure to seat the disc firmly under the drive hub hinges. If you do not seat the disc firmly, you could damage your disc drive and you may not be

able to open the tray.

When you have finished using a disc, wait until the LED indicator turns off before pressing the Eject button to remove the disc.

If the disc does not come out when you press the Eject button, go to Windows Explorer. Select the drive, click the right button of your mouse and

select Eject.

Using the CD-RW function

Your computer is equipped with a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive.

To burn CDs, you can use CD-RW and CD-R discs:

The CD-RW (CD-ReWritable) disc is a data memory medium that can be used to write, erase and rewrite

a program or other data.

The CD-R (CD-Recordable) disc is a data memory medium that can be used to write a program or other

data, but then no more than once.

To achieve optimum performance when writing data on a CD-RW disc, follow these recommendations :

Before writing to a new CD-RW, you must first format the disc. If you do not format the disc, your

computer will not recognize it.

To make a CD-R’s data readable on a CD-ROM drive, you need to close the session when you eject it. To

complete this process, follow the instructions included with your software.

Only use circular discs. Do not use discs with any other shape (star, heart, card, etc.), as this may damage

the CD-RW drive.

Do not strike or shake the computer while writing data to a disc.

For optimal writing speed, deactivate the screensaver before writing data to a disc.

Memory-resident disc utilities may cause unstable operation or data loss. Deactivate these utilities before

writing data to a disc.

For best results, use CD-Rs that are compatible with 4x speed, as DirectCD and Easy CD Creator are

preset to that speed. Your VAIO desktop does not support 1x writing speed.

When using a software application to burn CDs, be sure to exit and close all other applications.

Exit anti-virus software before writing data to a disc.

Never touch the surface of the disc. Fingerprints and dust on the surface of a disc may cause writing

errors.

Do not put your VAIO desktop into a power saving mode while using DirectCD to write data, or while

using Easy CD Creator .

Using the DVD function

To achieve optimum performance when playing DVD-ROMs, you should follow these recommendations.

You can play DVDs using the CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive and the MediaBar DVD Player software.

Close all open applications before playing a DVD-ROM movie.

Do not switch power saving modes while playing a DVD video.

If the virus checker is active, you need to disable it.

Do not use resident disc utilities or resident utilities to speed up the access of discs, because they may

cause the system to become unstable.

Make sure that the screensaver is deactivated.

Region codes indicators are labeled on the DVD discs to indicate in which region and on what type of

player you can play the disc. Unless a '2' or 'all' is labeled on your DVD disc or on the packaging, you

cannot play the disc on this player.

Do not try to change the region code settings of the CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. Any difficulties caused by

changing the region code settings of the CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive are out of warranty.

Using PC Cards

Your VAIO computer has a PC Card slot that supports Type I or Type II PC Cards. PC Cards allow you to connect

portable external devices.

Inserting a PC Card

To insert a PC Card, proceed as follows:

Slide the front panel cover in the direction of the arrow to open it.

Insert the PC Card gently into the PC Card slot, as shown.

The PC Card is automatically detected by your system.

The Unplug or Eject Hardware icon appears in the taskbar.

You do not need to shut down your computer when inserting a PC Card.

Some PC Cards may require you to disable idle devices when using the PC Card.

You may not be able to use some PC Cards or some functions of the PC Card with this computer.

Be sure to use the most recent software driver provided by the PC Card manufacturer.

If an “!” mark appears on the Device Manager tab in the System Properties dialog box, remove the software driver and then reinstall it.

Do not force a PC Card into the slot. It may damage the connector pins. If you have difficulty inserting a PC Card, check that you are inserting the PC

Card in the correct direction. See the manual supplied with your PC Card for more information on use.

For some PC Cards, if you alternate between Normal power operation and Standby or Hibernate power management modes while the card is

inserted, you may find that a device connected to your system is not recognized. Reboot your system to correct the problem.

Removing a PC Card

Follow the steps below to remove the PC Card while your computer is on. If it is not removed properly, your

system may not work. If you want to remove a PC Card when your computer is off, skip steps 1 to 7.

To remove a PC Card, proceed as follows:

Double-click the Unplug or Eject Hardware icon in the taskbar.

Using power saving modes

The color of the power indicator light on the main unit tells you which mode the computer is in.

If you plan to stop using your computer for a short period of time (not overnight), you can put it into

Standby mode instead of turning it off completely. Putting the computer into Standby mode saves energy

and allows a quick return to normal computer use.

To set the timer for your computer to automatically enter Standby mode after a certain amount of time,

open Power Options in the Control Panel.

To activate Standby mode manually, use one of these two methods:

Use the Standby button:

Save your work, close all applications and close your Internet connection, if applicable.

Press the Standby button in the top right-hand corner of the keyboard.

The computer goes into Standby mode, indicated by the umber light.

Use the Windows taskbar:

If you are interrupted and need to leave your computer suddenly, you can put it into Hibernate mode. This

power saving mode saves you the time of shutting down in the normal way.

When you put your computer into Hibernate mode:

Everything in the memory is saved to the hard disk.

The monitor and hard disk are turned off.

The computer is turned off.

The power indicator light turns off.

open Power Options in the Control Panel.

You can connect a suitable computer display directly to your VAIO desktop.

You may not be able to display the computer's LCD and the external display together, depending on the

Connecting an i.LINK™ device

Your computer includes two i.LINK (IEEE1394) connectors, which you can use to connect to an i.LINK

device such as a digital video camera recorder or to connect two VAIO computers in order to copy, delete or

edit files.

The 6-pin i.LINK connector on the back of your system can:

Supply power from the computer to the connected device if the device has a 6-pin connector, and

Supply 10V to 12V.

The 4-pin i.LINK connector on the front of the system cannot supply power to external devices.

The i.LINK connectors support transfer rates up to 400 Mbps; however, the actual transfer rate depends on

the transfer rate of the external device.

The i.LINK features available may vary depending on the software applications you use. Refer to the

documentation that came with your software for more information.

Connecting two VAIO computers

You can connect your VAIO desktop to another VAIO computer using an i.LINK™ cable (not supplied). With

Smart Connect* on your VAIO desktop, you can copy, edit or delete files on another VAIO computer that has

also Windows Millennium Edition installed or that has Smart Connect 3.0.

You can also print a document on a printer connected to another VAIO computer.

To connect your VAIO desktop to another VAIO computer, proceed as follows:

Connecting to a network (LAN)

Your computer comes with a preinstalled Ethernet interface. This function is enabled by default.

Should you need to enable the function yourself to connect to a network, proceed as follows:

Right-click on My Computer on the desktop and select Properties.

Click the Device Manager tab.

Under the Network Adapters category, select SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter.

Click Properties.

Click Enable Device and then click OK.

Click OK to close the System Properties window.

The Ethernet connection is now enabled.

Connect only 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX cables to the Ethernet port. Using other cables or a telephone cable may cause a malfunction, excessive heat

or even fire in the port.

About the computer and software

My computer does not start

Check that the computer is plugged into a power source and that it is turned on.

Check that the power indicator on the front panel of the computer indicates that the power is on.

Confirm that the power cord and all cables are connected firmly.

If you have plugged the computer into an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS), make sure the UPS is

turned on and works.

Check that the monitor is properly connected to the main unit. Check that the brightness and contrast

controls are adjusted correctly.

Moisture condensation may have occurred. Wait at least an hour before turning the computer on.

If the message Press <F1> to continue, <F2> to enter setup appears at the bottom of the display, you

need to initialize the BIOS.

To initialize the BIOS, proceed as follows:

Turn off the computer.

Remove any peripheral devices connected to the computer.

Turn on the computer and press <F2> when the Sony logo appears.

The BIOS setup menu screen appears.

Press <F5> or use the arrow keys to select Setup Defaults. The message Load default configuration

now? appears.

Make sure that [Yes] is selected and then press <Enter>.

Press <F10> or use the arrow keys to select Save and Exit.

My computer does not shut down

It is recommended that you shut down your computer using the Shut Down command on the Windows

Start menu. Using other methods, including those listed here, may result in loss of unsaved data.

If the Shut Down command does not work properly, proceed as follows:

Shut down the computer by pressing <Alt> + <F4>. The Shut Down Windows box appears. Select Shut

down from the drop-down menu.

If this does not work, press <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <Delete>. The Close Program dialog box appears. Click

Shut Down.

If this does not work, press the power button and hold it for at least four seconds.

This turns off the power.

Unplug the computer from the mains.

My system is running slowly

The system response time varies, depending on the number of applications that are open and running.

Close any application that you are not currently using.

Increasing the system memory may also help. The computer has two memory slots. For memory

upgrades, use only 3.3V PC-133 CL3 168pin SDRAM DIMM modules. For information on installing

memory, please see the online manual, Adding and removing a memory module (page 66).

My computer locks up

If you suspect an application is locking your system, you can try to stop it. To do this, press

<Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Delete> once, select the application that is locking your system, and then click End

Task.

If the above method does not work or you do not know which application is locking your system, restart

the computer. On the Windows taskbar, click the Start button, click Shut Down, and then select

Restart in the list and click OK.

If the above method does not work, press the power button and hold it for at least four seconds. This

turns off the power.

If your computer locks up while playing a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, stop the CD, and shut down the

computer by pressing <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Delete>, and then click Shut Down.

My computer or software program is not responding

To end the application that has stopped responding, proceed as follows:

Press <Ctrl>+<Alt><Delete>.

In the Close Program dialog box, scroll down until you locate the comment Not responding next to

an application.

Select this application from the list and click End Task. Windows will try to close the application. If it

fails to do so, a second dialog box appears.

Select End Task again.

If you are unable to unlock the application, repeat the above procedure, but select Shut Down when the Close Program dialog box appears.

If this still fails, proceed as follows:

If possible, save any unsaved work.

Press <Alt>+<F4>.

The Shut Down Windows box appears.

Select Restart.

Click OK.

If none of the above solves the problem, you can restart the computer by pressing <Ctrl>+<Alt><Delete> twice, or by pressing the power button

for longer than 4 seconds.

If the same application locks up regularly, contact the software publisher or the advertised technical support.

Windows locks up during shutdown

There are many reasons why the Windows operating system may not shut down properly, including

incompatible or conflicting drivers, damaged files, or non-responsive hardware.

Click Troubleshooting.

Click the subject on which you want the information, and then answer the questions that refer to your

My mouse does not work

Check that the mouse is plugged into the mouse connector on the monitor.

There may be dust or dirt inside the mouse mechanism.

To clean the mouse, proceed as follows:

Turn off the computer and turn the mouse upside down.

Remove the mouse ball cover by turning the ring clockwise as indicated by the arrows.

Turn the mouse upright and drop the mouse ball into your hand.

Using a piece of sticky tape, remove any dirt or dust on the mouse ball and inside the ball socket.

Put the mouse ball back into the socket and replace the cover.

Secure the cover by turning the ring anti-clockwise.

This cleaning procedure does not apply to optical mouse devices.

My mouse needs to be set up for left-hand use

To set your mouse up for left-handed users, proceed as follows:

Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop.

My LCD does not display anything

Check that the computer is plugged into a power source and that it is turned on.

I cannot play a CD

After inserting the CD, wait for a few seconds for the system to detect it before you try to access it.

Make sure the label of the disc is facing outwards.

If the disc requires software, make sure the software is installed according to the instructions of the

program.

Check the volume of your speakers.

Clean the disc with an appropriate cleaner.

Moisture condensation may have occurred. Leave the computer for at least 1 hour before turning it on.

I cannot play a DVD-ROM

If a region code warning appears when you are using the DVD player, it could be that the DVD-ROM you

are trying to play is incompatible with the CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive on your VAIO desktop. The region

code is listed on the packaging of the disc.

If you hear sound but cannot see a picture, your computer's video resolution may be set too high. For

best results, change the resolution in the Windows Control Panel - Display - Settings to 800 x 600

using 8-bit color.

If you see the video but cannot hear sound, check all of the following:

Make sure the mute setting is off in your DVD player software.

Check the master volume setting in the Audio Mixer. If you have connected external speakers, check

the volume settings for your computer speakers and check the connections between your speakers

and the computer.

In the Device Manager, check that the correct drivers are installed properly. To display the Device

Manager, click Start , point to Settings and click Control Panel. Double-click the System icon. In

the System Properties dialog box, click on the Device Manager tab.

A dirty or damaged disc may cause the computer to 'hang' while it tries to read the disc. If necessary,

reboot the computer, remove the disc and then check that it is not dirty or damaged.

On your computer, the default DVD region code is 2, which is the region code for European DVDs. Do not change this setting using the Region Code

Change function in Windows , or any other software application. System malfunctions originating from the user changing the DVD region code are

beyond the scope of your warranty and will result in service charges for repair.

My USB floppy disk drive cannot write to a diskette

The diskette may be write-protected. Disable the write-protect feature or use a diskette that is not write-

protected.

Check that the diskette is properly inserted into the USB floppy disk drive.

The USB floppy disk drive is an optional accessory and can be purchased from your Sony dealer.

When I double-click an application icon, a message such as 'You must insert the application CD into your

drive' appears and the software does not start

Some titles require specific files that are located on the application CD-ROM.

Insert the disc and try starting the program again.

Make sure you place the disc in the tray with the label side facing outwards.

Why does my CD-RW drive not record at the highest speed?

You must use 8x CD-R or 4x CD-RW media to achieve optimum performance.

If you want to use other media and are having difficulty formatting non-4x CD-RW discs, change the writing

speed from 4x to a lower setting.

To change the writing speed from the default to a lower speed, proceed as follows:

Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.

Right-click the Compact Disc icon.

Select Properties.

Select the Settings tab.

Change the Current Write Speed field to 2x.

Click OK.

The VAIO desktop computer has a maximum recording rate of 8x for CD-R and 4x for CD-RW discs.

About sound

My speakers are not producing sound

If you are using an application that has its own volume control, check that the volume is turned up.

Check the volume controls in Windows and in Windows Media Player.

If you are using external speakers, check that the speakers are plugged into the headphones connector

and the volume is turned up. If the speakers have a mute button, make sure it is off. If batteries power

the speakers, check that the batteries are inserted properly and that they are charged.

My microphone does not work

Check that your external microphone is plugged into the microphone connector correctly.

My microphone is too sensitive to background noise

If you find there is too much background noise when you record sound, you can adjust the microphone gain.

To adjust the microphone settings, proceed as follows:

Right-click the Volume icon on the Windows taskbar in the bottom right-hand corner.

Click Open Volume Controls.

The Volume Control dialog box appears.

In the Options menu, select Properties.

The Properties dialog box appears.

Change the setting in the Adjust volume for dialog box from Playback to Recording, and then click

OK.

Reduce the microphone level by moving the slider control.

If available, click the Advanced button under Microphone Balance.

The Advanced Controls for Microphone dialog box appears.

Deselect the I Mic +2dB UP check box, and then click Close.

Close the Recording Control dialog box.

The unwanted noise should now be cleared.

About peripherals

I cannot use DV devices. The message 'DV equipment seems to be disconnected or turned off' appears

Check that the DV device is turned on and that the cables are properly connected.

If you are using multiple i.LINK™ devices, the combination of the connected devices may cause unstable

operation. If this is the case, turn off all connected devices and disconnect unused devices. Check the

connection and then turn on the power again.

My PC Card is not working

Make sure the PC card is compatible with your version of Windows .

How do I install a printer?

Always check the printer manufacturer’s website for the latest drivers for Windows Millennium Edition

before proceeding. Some printers do not function properly without updated drivers for Windows

Millennium Edition.

If the printer has a USB connection, the printer should be automatically installed.

To install a local printer, proceed as follows:

From the Start menu, select Settings, then Printers.

Click Add Printer.

Click Next.

Select Local Printer and click Next.

Select the appropriate manufacturer and model and click Next.

Select the appropriate port, and then click Next.

Click Yes to have Windows -based programs use this as the default printer.

Click Next.

Click No and then click Finish.

The printer is now installed.

This procedure applies for most, but not for all printers.

I cannot print

Check that all the cables of the printer are properly connected.

Check that your printer is correctly configured and that you have up-to-date drivers. If necessary, contact

your dealer.

My connected printer does not print after the computer resumes from a power saving mode

To reset the printer connection, proceed as follows:

Right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop, then select Properties.

Click the Device Manager tab.

Select Refresh, then click OK.

My i.LINK™ device does not appear on the desktop

To see the i.LINK device icon on the desktop, proceed as follows:

Turn off and disconnect your i.LINK device.

Reconnect your device.

When I record images to a digital video device using DVgate, my system displays the message 'Recording to

This section describes safety guidelines and precautions to help you protect your computer from potential

damage.

Your VAIO desktop and memory modules use high precision components and electronic connectors

technology. To avoid the invalidation of your guarantee by mishandling, it is recommended that:

You contact your dealer to install a new memory module.

You do not install memory modules yourself, if you are not familiar with upgrading memory on a

computer.

Adding and removing memory

In the future, you may want to install memory modules to expand the functionality of your computer. You

can increase the memory by installing optional memory modules, although we recommend that you do not

install them yourself, unless you are familiar with upgrading memory on a computer.

Be careful when adding memory. Mistakes on installation or removal of the memory module may cause a

malfunction.

For memory upgrades, use only PC133 (CL3) SDRAM DIMM.

Electrostatic discharge can damage electronic components. Before touching a memory expansion board,

remember the following:

Handle the memory module gently.

The procedures described in this document assume familiarity with the general terminology associated

with personal computers and with the safety practices and regulatory compliance required for using and

modifying electronic equipment.

Disconnect the system from its power source and from any telecommunication links, networks, or

modems before you open the system. Failure to do so may result in personal injury or equipment

damage.

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage memory modules and other components. Install the memory

module only at an ESD workstation. If such a station is not available, do not work in a carpeted area, and

do not handle materials that produce or hold static electricity (cellophane wrappers, for example).

Ground yourself by maintaining contact with an unpainted metal portion of the chassis while

performing the procedure.

Do not open the memory module package until you are ready to install the module. The package

protects the module from ESD.

Use the special bag delivered with the memory module or wrap the module in aluminium foil to protect it from electrostatic discharge.

Do not place the memory module in places subject to:

- Heat sources such as radiators or air ducts,

- Direct sunlight,

- Excessive dust,

- Mechanical vibration or shock,

- Strong magnets or speakers that are not magnetically shielded,

- Ambient temperature of more than +35°C or less than +5°C,

- High humidity.

Removing a memory module

If you are not familiar with upgrading memory on a computer, we highly recommend that you contact your

dealer.

To remove a memory module, proceed as follows:

Shut down your computer and disconnect all peripheral devices.

Unplug the computer from the mains.

Wait until the computer cools down.

The inside of the main unit becomes very hot during operation. Wait for about one hour for the

computer to cool down before opening the unit.

Before you remove the memory module, touch a metal part of the computer to discharge any electricity

accumulated on your body.

Position the main unit so the back panel is facing you. Use a screwdriver to take out the screw under the

roof of the unit, just above the AC input connector (A).

Pull out the inner unit from its protective cabinet by holding the t-lever and pulling it slowly and firmly

(B). You do not need to remove the unit entirely to access the memory module.

Place the unit on its left side.

Locate the memory module.

Push down one of the end levers of the module socket and gently lift the memory module up before

taking it out completely (C).

Adding or changing a memory module

If you are not familiar with upgrading memory on a computer, we highly recommend that you contact your

dealer.

To add or change a memory module, proceed as follows:

Shut down your computer and disconnect all peripheral devices.

Unplug the computer from the mains.

Wait until the computer cools down.

The inside of the main unit becomes very hot during operation. Wait for about one hour for the

computer to cool down before you open the unit.

Before you add or change the memory module, touch a metal part of the computer to discharge any

static electricity accumulated on your body.

Remove the old memory module, if necessary (see Removing a memory module).

Slide the new memory module into the slot, making sure the release levers click into place and secure

the memory card.

Slide the main unit back into its protective cabinet and replace the screw.

Turn on your computer.

There is only one correct way to insert the memory module. Make sure the rivets of the module are lined up with the connector.

Viewing the amount of memory

To view the amount of memory, proceed as follows:

Turn on the computer.

On handling the hard disk

The hard disk has a high storage density and reads or writes data in a short time. However, it can be easily

damaged by mechanical vibration, shock or dust.

Although the hard disk has the internal safety device to prevent losing data due to mechanical vibration,

shock or dust, you should be careful when handling your computer.

To avoid damaging your hard disk:

Do not subject your computer to sudden movements.

Keep the computer away from magnets.

Do not place your computer in a location subject to mechanical vibration or in an unstable position.

Do not move your computer while the power is on.

Do not turn off the power or restart the computer while reading or writing data to disk.

Do not use your computer in a place subject to extreme changes in temperature.

If the hard disk is damaged, the data cannot be restored.

On handling the LCD screen

Do not leave the LCD facing the sun as it can damage the LCD. Be careful when using the computer near

a window.

Do not scratch the LCD or exert pressure on it. This could cause a malfunction.

Using the computer in low temperature conditions may produce a residual image on the screen. This is

not a malfunction. When the computer returns to normal temperature, the screen returns to normal.

A residual image may appear on the screen if the same image is displayed for a lengthy period of time.

The residual image disappears after a while. You can use a screensaver to prevent residual images.

The screen becomes warm during operation. This is normal and does not indicate a malfunction.

The LCD is manufactured using high-precision technology. You may, however, see tiny black points and/

or bright spots (red, blue, or green) that continuously appear on the LCD. This is a normal result of the

manufacturing process and does not indicate a malfunction.

Avoid rubbing the LCD screen, as this can damage the screen. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the LCD screen.

On using the power source

Your computer operates on 220V-240V (1.1A) AC 50/60 Hz.

Do not share the AC outlet with other high power-consuming equipment, such as a photocopier or

shredder.

You can purchase a power strip with a surge protector. This device prevents damage to your computer

caused by sudden power surges, in an electrical storm, for example.

Do not place heavy objects on the power cord.

To disconnect the cord, pull it out by the plug. Never pull the cord itself.

Unplug your computer from the wall outlet if you will not be using the computer for a long time.

On handling your computer

Clean the unit with a soft cloth, which is either dry or lightly moistened with a mild detergent solution.

Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder, or solvent such as alcohol or benzine, as these

may damage the finish of your computer.

Should you drop a solid object or any liquid onto the computer, shut down your computer and then

unplug it. You may want to have the computer checked by qualified personnel before operating it again.

Do not drop the computer or place heavy objects on top of the computer.

Do not place your computer in a location subject to:

Do not place electronic equipment near your computer. The electromagnetic field of your computer may

cause a malfunction.

Provide adequate air circulation to prevent internal heat from building up. Do not place your computer

on porous surfaces such as rugs or blankets, or near material such as curtains or draperies that may block

its ventilation slots. Always use the supplied VAIO desktop stand for the main unit.

The computer uses high-frequency radio signals and may cause interference to radio or TV reception.

Should this occur, relocate the computer a suitable distance away from the set.

Use only specified peripheral equipment and interface cables; otherwise, problems may occur.

Do not use cut or damaged connection cables.

If the computer is brought directly from a cold location to a warm one, moisture may condense inside

your computer. In this case, allow at least one hour before turning on your computer. If any problems

occur, unplug your computer and contact VAIO-Link.

Make sure you disconnect the power cord before cleaning the computer.

As you may lose important data once your computer is damaged, you should back up your data regularly.

Restore the original application programs from the Product Recovery CD-ROM.

On handling diskettes

Do not open the shutter manually or touch the surface of the diskette.

Keep diskettes away from magnets.

Keep diskettes away from direct sunlight and other sources of heat.

On handling compact discs

Do not touch the surface of the disc.

Do not drop or bend the disc.

Fingerprints and dust on the surface of a disc may cause reading errors. Always hold the disc by its edge

and central hole, as shown.

Proper care of the disc is essential to its continuous reliability. Do not use solvents such as benzine,

thinning agents, commercially available cleaners or anti-static spray, as they may cause damage to the

disc.

For normal cleaning, hold the disc by its edge and use a soft cloth to wipe the surface from the center

out.

If the disc is badly soiled, moisten a soft cloth with water, wring it out well, and use it to wipe the surface

of the disc from the center out. Wipe off any remaining moisture with a dry soft cloth.
