accommodate your needs. This manual will show you how to use your charger
safely and effectively. Please read, understand and follow these instructions and
precautions carefully, as this manual contains important safety and operating
instructions. The safety messages used throughout this manual contain a signal
word, a message and an icon.
The signal word indicates the level of the hazard in a situation.
Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will
result in death or serious injury to the operator or bystanders.
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided,
could result in death or serious injury to the operator or bystanders.
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided,

or sold by Schumacher® Electric Corporation may result in a risk of fire,
electric shock or injury to persons or damage to property.

To reduce the risk of damage to the electric plug or cord, pull by the plug
rather than the cord when disconnecting the charger.
An extension cord should not be used unless absolutely necessary. Use of an
improper extension cord could result in a risk of fire and electric shock. If an
extension cord must be used, make sure:
•That the pins on the plug of the extension cord are the same size and shape
as those of the plug on the charger.
•That the extension cord is properly wired and in good electrical condition.
•That the wire size is large enough for the AC ampere rating of the charger as
specified in Section 8.

To reduce the risk of electric shock, unplug the charger from the outlet before
attempting any maintenance or cleaning.
Remove personal metal items such as rings, bracelets, necklaces and
watches when working with a lead-acid battery. A lead-acid battery can
produce a short-circuit current high enough to weld a ring or the like to metal,
causing a severe burn.

PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS
Risk of explosive gases.

Working in the vicinity of a lead-acid battery is dangerous. Batteries generate
explosive gases during normal battery operation. For this reason, it is of
utmost importance that you follow the instructions each time you use the
charger.
To reduce the risk of a battery explosion, follow these instructions and those
published by the battery manufacturer and the manufacturer of any equipment
you intend to use in the vicinity of the battery. Review the cautionary markings
on these products and on the engine.

NEVER smoke or allow a spark or flame in the vicinity of a battery or engine.
Be extra cautious to reduce the risk of dropping a metal tool onto the battery.
It might spark or short-circuit the battery or other electrical part that may cause
an explosion.

Use this charger for charging LEAD-ACID batteries only. It is not intended to
supply power to a low voltage electrical system other than in a starter-motor
application. Do not use this battery charger for charging dry-cell batteries that
are commonly used with home appliances. These batteries may burst and
cause injury to persons and damage to property.

NEVER overcharge a battery.

PREPARING TO CHARGE
Risk of contact with battery acid. Battery acid is a
highly corrosive sulfuric acid.

Consider having someone close enough by to come to your aid when you
work near a lead-acid battery.
Have plenty of fresh water and soap nearby in case battery acid contacts your
skin, clothing or eyes.
Wear complete eye and body protection, including safety goggles and
protective clothing. Avoid touching your eyes while working near the battery.

If battery acid contacts your skin or clothing, immediately wash the area with
soap and water. If acid enters your eye, immediately flood the eye with cold
running water for at least 10 minutes and get medical attention right away.

If battery acid is accidentally swallowed, drink milk, the whites of eggs or
water. DO NOT induce vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately.
If it is necessary to remove the battery from the vehicle to charge it, always
remove the grounded terminal first. Make sure all of the accessories in the
vehicle are off to prevent arcing.

Be sure the area around the battery is well ventilated while the battery is being
charged.
Clean the battery terminals before charging the battery. During cleaning, keep
airborne corrosion from coming into contact with your eyes, nose and mouth.
Use baking soda and water to neutralize the battery acid and help eliminate
airborne corrosion. Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth.

Add distilled water to each cell until the battery acid reaches the level
specified by the battery manufacturer. Do not overfill. For a battery without
removable cell caps, such as valve regulated lead acid batteries (VRLA),
carefully follow the manufacturer’s recharging instructions.

Read, understand and follow all instructions for the charger, battery, vehicle
and any equipment used near the battery and charger. Study all of the battery
manufacturer’s specific precautions while charging and recommended rates
of charge.
Determine the voltage of the battery by referring to the vehicle owner’s manual
and make sure that the output voltage of the charger is the correct voltage.

Locate the charger as far away from the battery as the DC cables permit.
Never place the charger directly above the battery being charged; gases from
the battery will corrode and damage the charger.

Never allow battery acid to drip onto the charger when reading the electrolyte
specific gravity or filling the battery.

Do not operate the charger in a closed-in area or restrict the ventilation in any

DC CONNECTION PRECAUTIONS
5.1
Connect and disconnect the DC output clips only after removing the AC plug
from the electrical outlet. Never allow the clips to touch each other.

Attach the clips to the battery and chassis, as indicated in sections 6 and 7.
FOLLOW THESE STEPS WHEN BATTERY IS INSTALLED IN
VEHICLE.
A spark near the battery may cause a
battery explosion. To reduce the risk
of a spark near the battery:

Position the AC and DC cables to reduce the risk of damage by the hood, door
and moving or hot engine parts. NOTE: If it is necessary to close the hood
during the charging process, ensure that the hood does not touch the metal
part of the battery clips or cut the insulation of the cables.

Stay clear of fan blades, belts, pulleys and other parts that can cause injury.
Check the polarity of the battery posts. The POSITIVE (POS, P, +) battery
post usually has a larger diameter then the NEGATIVE (NEG, N, -) post.

Determine which post of the battery is grounded (connected) to the chassis.
If the negative post is grounded to the chassis (as in most vehicles), see step
6.5. If the positive post is grounded to the chassis, see step 6.6.
For a negative-grounded vehicle, connect the POSITIVE (RED) clip from the
battery charger to the POSITIVE (POS, P, +) ungrounded post of the battery.
Connect the NEGATIVE (BLACK) clip to the vehicle chassis or engine block
away from the battery. Do not connect the clip to the carburetor, fuel lines or
sheet-metal body parts. Connect to a heavy gauge metal part of the frame or
engine block.

For a positive-grounded vehicle, connect the NEGATIVE (BLACK) clip from
the battery charger to the NEGATIVE (NEG, N, -) ungrounded post of the
battery. Connect the POSITIVE (RED) clip to the vehicle chassis or engine
block away from the battery. Do not connect the clip to the carburetor, fuel
lines or sheet-metal body parts. Connect to a heavy gauge metal part of the
frame or engine block.

Connect the AC supply cord to the electrical outlet.
When disconnecting the charger, disconnect the AC cord, remove the clip
from the vehicle chassis and then remove the clip from the battery terminal.

FOLLOW THESE STEPS WHEN BATTERY IS OUTSIDE VEHICLE
A spark near the battery may cause a
battery explosion. To reduce the risk
of a spark near the battery:

Attach at least a 24-inch (61 cm) long 6-gauge (AWG) insulated battery cable
to the NEGATIVE (NEG, N, -) battery post.
Connect the POSITIVE (RED) charger clip to the POSITIVE (POS, P, +) post
of the battery.
Position yourself and the free end of the cable you previously attached to the
NEGATIVE (NEG, N, -) battery post as far away from the battery as possible
– then connect the NEGATIVE (BLACK) charger clip to the free end of the
cable.

Do not face the battery when making the final connection.
Connect the AC supply cord to the electrical outlet.
When disconnecting the charger, always do so in the reverse order of the
connecting procedure and break the first connection while as far away from
the battery as practical.

A marine (boat) battery must be removed and charged on shore. To charge it
onboard requires equipment specially designed for marine use.
BATTERY CHARGING – AC CONNECTIONS
Risk of electric shock or fire.

This battery charger is for use on a nominal 120-volt circuit. The charger must
be grounded to reduce the risk of electric shock. The plug must be plugged
into an outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all
local codes and ordinances. The plug pins must fit the receptacle (outlet). Do
not use with an ungrounded system.
Never alter AC cord or plug provided – if it does not fit the outlet, have proper
grounded outlet installed by a qualified electrician. Improper connection can
result in a risk of an electric shock or electrocution.

NOTE: Pursuant to Canadian Regulations, use of an adapter plug is not
allowed in Canada. Use of an adapter plug in the United States is not
recommended.

•100 feet long or less - use an 18 gauge extension cord.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Automatic Voltage Detection
When the charger is connected to a battery, it will automatically determine
whether the connected battery is a 6 volt battery or a 12 volt battery. This
eliminates the possibility of using the wrong voltage setting.
Thermal Runaway
The charger automatically reduces the current if it detects the battery may be
getting too hot. This is a safety precaution.
Charging
1. Ensure that all of the charger components are in place and in good
working condition, including the plastic boots on the battery clips.
2. Connect the battery following the connection instructions described in
Using the Quick-Disconnect Cable Connectors section.
3. Connect the AC power following the precautions listed in Section 8.
4. If you’ve connected everything correctly, the AC POWER
LED will be
lit indicating the charger has power, the CONNECTED
LED will be lit
indicating the battery is properly connected and the CHARGING
LED
will be lit indicating that the charger is charging. If any of these LEDs are
not lit, check the connections at the battery and AC source or have the
battery checked/replaced.

NOTE: This charger is equipped with an auto-start feature. It will not supply
current to the battery clips until a battery is properly connected and the
CONNECTED
LED is lit. Unlike traditional chargers, the clips will not spark if
touched together.
Using The Quick-Connect Cable Connectors
Connect either of the two output cable assemblies to the charger in seconds.
Make sure to place the charger on a dry, non-flammable surface like metal or
concrete.
NOTE: Never connect the clamp and ring terminal connectors together for use in
other applications, such as external battery or other power source charging, or to
extend the output cable length, as reverse polarity and/or overcharge conditions
will occur.
Battery Clips
Connect the battery clip cable assembly to the charger. Follow the safety
instructions in sections 6 or 7 to connect the output clips to the battery.
Ring Terminals
The ring connectors permanently attach the battery providing easy access to
quickly charge your battery. This application is appropriate for motorcycles, lawn
tractors, ATV’s and snowmobiles. To permanently attach it to a battery, loosen
and remove each nut from the bolts at the battery terminals. Connect the red
positive ring connector ring to the positive (POS, P, +) battery terminal. Connect
the black negative ring connector ring to the negative (NEG, N, -) battery
terminal. Replace and tighten the nuts to secure it. Take care to keep both wires
and plug away from metal and the engine hood. Connect the ring connector
cable assembly to the charger. Periodically check the ring connectors to ensure
they are properly connected.
Aborted Charge
If charging can not be completed normally, charging will abort. When charging
aborts, the charger’s output is shut off, and the CHARGING
LED will flash. To
reset after an aborted charge, either disconnect the battery or unplug the charger.
Desulfation Mode
If the battery is left discharged for an extended period of time, it could become
sulfated and not accept a normal charge. If the charger detects a sulfated battery,
the charger will switch to a special mode of operation designed for such batteries.
Completion of Charge
Charge completion is indicated by the CHARGED
LED. When lit, the charger
has stopped charging and switched to the Maintain Mode of operation.

Maintain Mode
When the CHARGED
LED is lit, the charger has started Maintain Mode.
In this mode, the charger keeps the battery fully charged by delivering a small
current when necessary. If the battery voltage drops below a preset level, the
charger will go back into Charge Mode until the battery voltage returns to the full
charge level, at which point the charger will return to Maintain Mode.
NOTE: The maintain mode technology utilized in Schumacher’s maintainers
allows you to safely charge and maintain a healthy battery for extended periods
of time. However, problems with the battery, electrical problems in the vehicle,
improper connections or other unanticipated conditions could cause excessive
voltage draws. As such, occasionally monitoring your battery and the charging
process is recommended.
NOTE: The charger automatically switches between Charge Mode and Maintain
Mode as necessary. The CHARGED
LED may cycle on when the battery is at
full charge and off when the voltage drops below a preset level and the charger
goes into Charge Mode. This cycle will continue, and the CHARGED
LED will
stay on for longer periods of time as the battery becomes more fully charged.
13.
CALCULATING CHARGE TIME
Use the following table to more accurately determine the time it will take to bring
a battery to full charge. First, identify where your battery fits into the chart.
Find your battery’s rating on the chart below, and note the charge time given. The
times given are for batteries with a 50% charge prior to recharging. Add more
time for severely discharged batteries.

14.
MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

Before performing maintenance, unplug and disconnect the battery charger
(see Sections 6, 7 and 8).

After use, unplug the charger and use a dry cloth to wipe all battery corrosion
and other dirt or oil from the terminals, cords, and the charger case.
Ensure that all of the charger components are in place, securely attached and
in good working condition, including the plastic boots on the battery clips.
Servicing does not require opening the unit, as there are no user-serviceable
parts.

STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS

Store the charger unplugged, in an upright position. The cord will still conduct
electricity until it is unplugged from the outlet.

17.
BEFORE RETURNING FOR REPAIRS
17.1
When a charging problem arises, make certain that the battery is capable
of accepting a normal charge. Use a good battery to double check all
connections, the AC outlet for a full 120-volts, the charger clips for correct
polarity and the quality of the connections from the cables to the clips and
from the clips to the battery system. The clips must be clean.

When a battery is very cold, partially charged or sulfated, it will not draw
the full rated amperes from the charger. It is both dangerous and damaging
to a battery to force higher amperage into it than it can effectively use in
recharging.
When an UNKNOWN OPERATING PROBLEM arises, please read the
complete manual and call the customer service number for information that
will usually eliminate the need for return.

charger for 2 years from the date of purchase at retail against defective material
or workmanship that may occur under normal use and care. If your unit is not
free from defective material or workmanship, Manufacturer’s obligation under this
warranty is solely to repair or replace your product with a new or reconditioned

3.
PREPARACIÓN PARA LA CARGA

corrosivo.

Considere la idea de que alguna persona se encuentre cerca suyo para poder
ayudarlo cuando trabaje en forma cercana a una batería de plomo-ácido.
Cuente con una gran cantidad de agua potable y jabón a mano en caso de
que el ácido de la batería tenga contacto con su piel, ropa u ojos.
Utilice protección visual y corporal completa, incluyendo gafas de seguridad y
prendas de protección. Evite tocar sus ojos mientras trabaje en forma cercana
a la batería.

Si el ácido de la batería tiene contacto con su piel o su ropa, lave de
inmediato el área afectada con agua y jabón. En caso de que ingrese ácido
en un ojo, sumerja el mismo de inmediato bajo agua potable corriente por al
menos 10 minutos y obtenga atención médica en forma inmediata.

Si el ácido de la batería es accidentalmente ingerido, se recomienda beber
leche, clara de huevo o agua. NO provoque vómito. Busque ayuda médica de
inmediato.
Si resulta necesario extraer la batería del vehículo para cargarla, siempre
retire el terminal con descarga a tierra en primer lugar. Asegúrese de que
todos los accesorios en el vehículo se encuentren apagados, para evitar la
formación de arcos eléctricos.

SIGA ESTOS PASOS CUANDO LA BATERÍA ESTÉ COLOCADA EN
EL VEHÍCULO
Una chispa provocada cerca de la

En un vehículo con descarga a tierra por borne negativo, conecte el gancho
POSITIVO (ROJO) del cargador de batería al borne POSITIVO (POS, P, +)
sin descarga a tierra de la batería. Conecte el gancho NEGATIVO (NEGRO)
al chasis del vehículo o al bloque motor alejado de la batería. No conecte el
gancho al carburador, líneas de combustible o cuerpos metálicos. Conecte a
una pieza metálica de calibre grueso del marco o del bloque motor.

En un vehículo con descarga a tierra por borne positivo, conecte el gancho
NEGATIVO (NEGRO) del cargador de batería al borne NEGATIVO (NEG, N,
-) sin descarga a tierra de la batería. Conecte el gancho POSITIVO (ROJO)
al chasis del vehículo o al bloque motor alejado de la batería. No conecte al
carburador, líneas de combustible o cuerpos metálicos. Conecte a una pieza
metálica de calibre grueso del marco o del bloque motor.

Conecte el cable de suministro de CA al tomacorriente.
Al desconectar el cargador, desconecte el cable de CA, retire el gancho del
chasis del vehículo y luego retire el gancho del terminal perteneciente a la

CARGA DE BATERÍA, CONEXIONES DE CA
El riesgo de descarga eléctrica o incendio

Este cargador de batería está destinado a un uso en un circuito con tensión
nominal de 120 V. El cargador debe poseer una descarga a tierra para
reducir el riesgo de descargas eléctricas. El enchufe se debe conectar a un
tomacorriente adecuadamente instalado y que cuente con descarga a tierra

de acuerdo con todas las ordenanzas y códigos. Los pasadores del enchufe
deben adaptarse al receptáculo (tomacorriente). No utilizar con un sistema
que no posea descarga a tierra.

Nunca altere el cable o enchufe de CA suministrado, si no se ajusta al
tomacorriente, haga instalar un tomacorriente adecuado con descarga a tierra
por medio de un electricista capacitado. Una conexión inadecuada puede
provocar un riesgo de descarga eléctrica o electrocución.
NOTA: De acuerdo a las Leyes Canadienses, el uso de un enchufe adaptador
no es permitido en el Canada. El uso de un enchufe adaptador no es
recomendable en Los Estados Unidos de América.

INSTRUCCIONES DE OPERACIÓN
Detección de Voltaje Automático
Cuando el cargador está conectado a la batería, este identificará,
automáticamente, si la batería conectada es de 6 o 12 volts. Este proceso
eliminará la posibilidad de usar el tipo de voltaje equivocado.
Escape termal
El cargador reducirá automáticamente la corriente si detecta que la batería se
está calentando demasiado. Esta es una prevención de seguridad.
Carga
1. Asegúrese de que todas las piezas del cargador estén bien instaladas
y en buenas condiciones para su función, incluyendo los protectores de
plástico de las pinzas de la batería.
2. Conecte la batería de acuerdo con las instrucciones de conexión
descritas en la sección Uso de conectores de cables de desconexión

4. Si usted ha conectado todo correctamente, el LED CARGA ALTERNA
CA del indicador de CARGA alterna se encenderá, indicando que el
cargador tiene energía, el LED CONECTADA se encenderá para
advertir que la batería está propiamente conectada y el LED CARGANDO
que el cargador está cargando. Si por alguna razón, alguna de las
luces LED no encienden, revise las conexiones y el alimentador de
corriente alterna CA o reemplace la batería.
NOTA: Este cargador está equipado con un auto-rectificador. Este no permitirá
paso de corriente si las pinzas de la batería no están conectadas en forma
correcta y el LED CONECTADA
encendido. A diferencia de otros cargadores
tradicionales, las pinzas no harán corto si se juntan una con otra.
Uso de Conectores de Cables de Conexión Rápida
Conecte cualquiera de los dos juegos de cables de salida al cargador en
segundos. Asegúrese de colocar el cargador sobre una superficie seca y no
inflamable como metal o concreto.
NOTA: Nunca conecte la pinza y las terminales de los conectores de argolla
juntos, para aplicarlo de otra forma, tal como batería externa u otra fuente de
poder de carga, o para alargar el cable de salida, esto ocasionará polaridad
invertida o sobrecarga.
Abrazaderas de la Batería
Conecte el juego de cable con abrazaderas de batería al cargador. Siga las
instrucciones de seguridad en las secciones 6 y 7 para conectar las abrazaderas
de salida a la batería.
Terminales de Tipo Anillo
Los conectores tipo anillo conectan la batería de manera permanente,
permitiendo un acceso fácil para cargar rápidamente su batería. Esta aplicación
es adecuada para motocicletas, cortadoras de césped, vehículos todo terreno y
vehículos de nieve. Para conectarla de manera permanente a la batería, afloje
y retire cada tuerca de los pernos en los terminales de la batería. Conecte el
anillo conector del anillo rojo positivo al terminal de batería positivo (POS, P,
+). Conecte el anillo conector del anillo negro negativo al terminal de batería
negativo (NEG, N, -). Vuelva a colocar las tuercas y apriételas para asegurar la
batería. Tenga cuidado de mantener los cables y el enchufe alejados del metal
y del capó del motor. Conecte el juego de cable con abrazaderas de batería
al cargador. Revise periódicamente los anillos conectores para esegurar una
conexión apropiada.

Carga anulada
Si no se puede completar la carga normalmente, la carga se anulará. Cuando
se anule la carga, la salida del cargador se apagará y se ilumina el LED
CARGANDO
. Para reiniciar después de que se anula la carga puede
desconectar la batería o desenchufar el cargador.
Modo de desulfatación
Si se deja la batería sin cargar por un largo tiempo se puede sulfatar y no
aceptar una carga normal. Si el cargador detecta una batería sulfatada cambiará
a un modo especial de funcionamiento diseñado para estas baterías.
Finalización de la carga
La finalización de la carga se indica con el LED CARGADO
. Cuando se
enciende, el cargador ha dejado de cargar y pasó al Modo de funcionamiento de
mantenimiento.
Modo de mantenimiento
Cuando el LED CARGADO
se enciende, el cargador ha comenzado el Modo
de mantenimiento. En este modo el cargador mantiene la batería totalmente
cargada mediante una pequeña corriente cuando corresponda. Si la tensión de
la batería desciende por debajo de un nivel predeterminado el cargador volverá
al Modo de carga hasta que la tensión de la batería vuelva al nivel de carga
completa en cuyo punto el cargador volverá al Modo de mantenimiento.
NOTA: El Modo de Mantenimiento es una tecnología utilizada en los cargadores
Schumacher, para permitirle cargar y mantener confiadamente segura su batería
y para que mantenga su batería saludable por largos períodos de tiempo. Ahora,
los problemas con la batería, problemas eléctricos del vehículo, conexiones
equivocadas u otras condiciones que surgan, podrías causar excesivo escape
de voltaje. De modo que, se recomienda, enérgicamente supervisar la batería y
el proceso de carga.
NOTA: El cargador automáticamente pasa del Modo de carga al de
mantenimiento según corresponda. El LED CARGADO
iniciará el ciclo
cuando la batería esté totalmente cargada y se apagará cuando la tensión
descienda al nivel determinado y el cargador pase al Modo de carga. Este ciclo
continuará y el LED CARGADO
permanecerá por períodos más largos a
medida que la batería se vaya cargando.

14.
INSTRUCCIONES DE MANTENIMIENTO
14.1
Antes de realizar mantenimiento, desenchufe y desconecte el cargador de la
batería (ver Secciones 6, 7 y 8).

Después de usar, desenchufe el cargador y utilice un paño seco para limpiar
la corrosión de toda la batería y otra suciedad o aceite de los terminales,
cables y carcasa del cargador.
Asegúrese de que todas las piezas del cargador estén bien instaladas,
aseguradas y en buenas condiciones para su función, incluyendo los
protectores de plástico en las pinzas de la batería.
Para realizar mantenimiento no es necesario abrir la unidad, ya que no
existen piezas a las cuales puede realizarle mantenimiento el usuario.

INSTRUCCIONES DE ALMACENAJE
15.1
Guarde el cargador desenchufado en posición vertical. El cable seguirá
conduciendo electricidad hasta que se desenchufe del toma.

Almacene en el interior, en un lugar fresco y seco.
No guarde los ganchos en asas, enganchados entre sí, en o cerca de metales
o enganchados en cables.

ANTES DE DEVOLVER A REPARACIONES

Cuando surja un problema de carga, asegúrese de que la batería puede
recibir una carga normal. Utilice una buena batería para verificar dos veces
todas las conexiones, el toma de CA para obtener 120-volts completos, los
ganchos del cargador para lograr una polaridad correcta y la calidad de las
conexiones de los cables a los ganchos y de los ganchos al sistema de la
batería. Los ganchos deben estar limpios.

Cuando la batería está muy fría, parcialmente cargada o sulfatada no
obtendrá todo el índice de amperes del cargador. Es peligroso y perjudicial
