Once you have connected your machine to a network with an RJ-45
Ethernet cable, you can share the machine with other network users.
You need to set up the network protocols on the machine to use it as your
network printer. Protocols can be set up by the following two methods:
Configuring TCP/IP
Via network administration programs
Your machine can be set up with a variety of TCP/IP network information,
such as an IP address, a subnet mask, a gateway, and DNS addresses.
There are several ways in which your machine can be assigned a TCP/
IP address, depending on your network.
You can configure your machine’s print server settings and manage the
machine via the following programs that came with your machine:
SyncThru™ Web Admin Service: A web-based printer
management solution for network administrators. SyncThru™ Web
Admin Service provides you with an efficient way of managing
network devices and lets you remotely monitor and troubleshoot
network printers from any site with corporate intranet access.
• Static addressing: A TCP/IP address is assigned manually by the
system administrator.
• Dynamic addressing via BOOTP/DHCP: A TCP/IP address is
assigned automatically by the server.
SyncThru™ Web Service: A web server embedded to your network
print server, which allows you to:
Note
Before configuring TCP/IP, you need to set the network protocol
to TCP/IP.
- Configure the network parameters necessary for the machine to
connect to various network environments.
- Customize printer, copy, and fax settings.

This chapter introduces you to how select and load print media for your
Note
• Leaving the scanner lid open while copying may affect copy
quality and toner consumption.
• Dust on the scanner glass may cause black spots on the

machine.
This chapter includes:
• If you are copying a page from a book or magazine, lift the
scanner lid until its hinges are caught by the stopper and then
close the lid. If the book or magazine is thicker than 30 mm,
start copying with the lid open.
Selecting print media
Loading originals
You can print on a variety of print media, such as plain paper, envelopes,
labels, and transparencies. Always use print media that meet the
guidelines for use with your machine. Print media that does not meet the
guidelines outlined in this user’s guide may cause the following
problems:
You can use the scanner glass to load an original for copying, scanning.
1
Lift and open the scanner lid.
• Poor print quality
• Increased paper jams
• Premature wear on the machine.
Properties, such as weight, composition, grain, and moisture content,
are important factors that affect the machine’s performance and the
output quality. When you choose print materials, consider the following:
• The type, size and weight of the print media for your machine are
described later in this section.
• Desired outcome: The print media you choose should be appropriate
for your project.
• Brightness: Some print media are whiter than others and produce
sharper, more vibrant images.
2
Place the original face down on the scanner glass and align it with
the registration guide at the top left corner of the glass.
• Surface smoothness: The smoothness of the print media affects how
crisp the printing looks on the paper.
Note
• Some print media may meet all of the guidelines in this section
and still not produce satisfactory results. This may be the
result of improper handling, unacceptable temperature and
humidity levels, or other variables over which Samsung has no
control.
• Before purchasing large quantities of print media, ensure that
it meets the requirements specified in this user’s guide.
Caution
Using print media that does not meet these specifications may
cause problems, requiring repairs. Such repairs are not covered
by Samsung’s warranty or service agreements.
3
Close the scanner lid. Be careful not to move the document.
Caution
When you close the scanner lid after placing the document, be
careful your fingers not to be caught between the scanner glass
and the lid. Your machine may have a heavy lid (or cover) for
optimal pressure on the document for the best scanning.

F to 86o F). The relative humidity should be between 10% and 70%.
• Envelopes with a peel-off adhesive strip or with
more than one flap that folds over to seal must
use adhesives compatible with the printer’s
fusing temperature for 0.1 second. Check your
machine’s specification to view the fusing
temperature, see page 13.1. The extra flaps and
strips might cause wrinkling, creasing, or jams,
and may even damage the fuser.
• Store unused print media in a moisture-proof wrap, such as a plastic
container or bag, to prevent dust and moisture from contaminating
your paper.
• Load special media types one sheet at a time through the manual
feeder to avoid paper jams.
To prevent print media, such as transparencies and label sheets, from
sticking together, remove them as they print out.
• For the best print quality, position margins no
closer than 15 mm (0.6 inches) from the edges
of the envelope.
• Avoid printing over the area where the
envelope’s seams meet.

Guidelines
To avoid damaging the machine, use only
transparencies designed for use in laser
printers.
• Transparencies used in the printer must be able
to withstand the machine’s fusing temperature.
Check your machine’s specification to view the
fusing temperature, see page 13.1.
• Place them on a flat surface after removing
them from the machine.
• Do not leave them in the paper tray for long
periods of time. Dust and dirt may accumulate
on them, resulting in spotty printing.
To avoid smudging caused by fingerprints,
handle them carefully.
To avoid fading, do not expose printed
transparencies to prolonged sunlight.
• Ensure that transparencies are not wrinkled,
curled, or have any torn edges.
To avoid damaging the machine, use only labels
designed for use in laser printers.
• When selecting labels, consider the following
factors:
- Adhesives: The adhesive material should be
stable at your machine’s fusing temperature.
Check your machine’s specification to view the
fusing temperature, see page 13.1.
- Arrangement: Only use labels with no exposed
backing between them. Labels can peel off
sheets that have spaces between the labels,
causing serious jams.
- Curl: Prior to printing, labels must lie flat with no
more than 13 mm (5 inches) of curl in any
direction.
Transparencies
Labels
- Condition: Do not use labels with wrinkles,
bubbles, or other indications of separation.
• Make sure that there is no exposed adhesive
material between labels. Exposed areas can cause
labels to peel off during printing, which can cause
paper jams. Exposed adhesive can also cause
damage to machine components.
• Do not run a sheet of labels through the machine
more than once. The adhesive backing is designed
for only a single pass through the machine.
• Do not use labels that are separating from the
backing sheet or are wrinkled, bubbled, or
otherwise damaged.
Caution
Recommended media: Transparency for a
Color Laser Printers produced by HP,
Xerox and 3M.
It is not recommended to use paperbacked
transparencies such as Xerox 3R91334,
which can cause a jam or be scratched.
• Do not print on media smaller than 76 mm
(3.00 inches) wide or 127 mm (5.00 inches) long.
• In the software application, set margins at least
6.4 mm (0.25 inches) away from the edges of
the material.
Card stock or
custom-sized
materials
• Letterhead must be printed with heat-resistant
ink that will not melt, vaporize, or release
hazardous emissions when subjected to the
printer’s fusing temperature for 0.1 second.
Check your machine’s specification to view the
fusing temperature, see page 13.1.
• Letterhead ink must be non-flammable and
should not adversely affect printer rollers.
• Forms and letterhead should be sealed in a
moisture-proof wrapping to prevent changes
during storage.
Preprinted
paper
• Before you load preprinted paper, such as forms
and letterhead, verify that the ink on the paper is
dry. During the fusing process, wet ink can come
off preprinted paper, reducing print quality.

In the manual feeder
The manual feeder can hold special sizes and types of print material,
such as transparencies, postcards, note cards, labels, and envelopes. It
is useful for single page printing on letterhead or colored paper.
Tips on using the manual feeder
• Load only one size of print media at a time in the manual feeder.
When you print out many pieces of paper at once, tray use is
recommended.
To prevent paper jams, do not add paper when there is still paper in
the manual feeder. This also applies to other types of print media.
Note
• Do not push the paper width guides far enough to cause the
material to warp.
• Print media should be loaded face up with the top edge going into the
manual feeder first and be placed in the center of the tray.
• If you do not correctly adjust the paper width guides, it may
cause a paper jams.
• Always load only the print media specified in page 5.1 to avoid paper
jams and print quality problems.
• Flatten any curl on postcards, envelopes, and labels before loading
them into the manual feeder.

Extend the top handle on the imaging unit and then use it to pull the
imaging unit out of the machine completely.
Cleaning your machine
To maintain print and scan quality, follow the cleaning procedures below
each time the toner cartridge is replaced or if print and scan quality
problems occur.
Caution
• Cleaning the cabinet of the machine with cleaning materials
containing large amounts of alcohol, solvent, or other strong
substances can discolor or distort the cabinet.
• If your machine or its around is contaminated with toner, we
recommend you to use cloth or tissue dampened with water
to clean it. If you use a vacuum cleaner, toner blows in the air
and might be harmful for you.
Cleaning the outside
Clean the cabinet of the machine with a soft lint-free cloth. You can
dampen the cloth slightly with water, but be careful not to let any water
drip onto or into the machine.
Caution
To prevent damage to the imaging unit, do not expose it to
light for more than a few minutes. Cover it with a piece of
paper, if necessary.
Cleaning the inside
• Do not touch the green surface on the imaging unit with your
hands or any other material. Use the handle on it to avoid
touching this area.
During the printing process, paper, toner, and dust particles can
accumulate inside the machine. This buildup can cause print quality
problems, such as toner specks or smearing. Cleaning the inside of the
machine clears or reduces these problems.
• Be careful not to scratch the surface of the imaging unit.
4
With a dry lint-free cloth, wipe away any dust and spilled toner.
1
Turn the machine off and unplug the power cord. Wait for the
machine to cool down.
2

Pull the corresponding toner cartridge out.
Maintaining the toner cartridge
Toner cartridge storage
To get the most from the toner cartridge, keep the following guidelines in
mind:
• Do not remove the toner cartridge from its package until ready for use.
• Do not refill the toner cartridge. The machine warranty does not cover
damage caused by using a refilled cartridge.
• Store toner cartridges in the same environment as your machine.
To prevent damage to the toner cartridge, do not expose it to light for
more than a few minutes.
3
Holding the toner cartridge, thoroughly roll it 5 or 6 times to
distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.
Expected cartridge life
The life of the toner cartridge depends on the amount of toner that print
jobs require. The actual number may also be different depending on the
print density of the pages you print on, and the number of pages may be
affected by operating environment, printing interval, media type, and
media size. If you print a lot of graphics, you may need to change the
cartridge more often.
Redistributing toner
When the toner cartridge is near the end of its life:
• White streaks or light printing occurs.
Note
If toner gets on your clothing, wipe it off with a dry cloth and
wash clothing in cold water. Hot water sets toner into fabric.
• The toner related message telling that the toner is low.
• SmartPanel program window appears on the computer telling you
which color cartridge is low on toner.
4
Grasp the toner cartridge and align it with the corresponding slot
inside the machine. Insert it back into its slot until it clicks into place.
• The Status LED blinks red.
If this happens, you can temporarily reestablish print quality by
redistributing the remaining toner in the cartridge. In some cases, white
streaks or light printing will still occur even after you have redistributed
the toner.

Tips for avoiding paper jams
By selecting the correct media types, most paper jams can be avoided.
When a paper jam occurs, follow the steps outlined on page 11.1.
• Follow the procedures on page 5.5. Ensure that the adjustable guides
are positioned correctly.
• Do not overload the tray. Ensure that the paper level is under the
brackets of the tray.
3
Remove the jammed paper by gently pulling it straight out.
• Do not remove paper from the tray while your machine is printing.
• Flex, fan, and straighten paper before loading.
• Do not use creased, damp, or highly curled paper.
• Do not mix paper types in a tray.
• Use only recommended print media. See page 5.1
.
Ensure that the recommended print side of print media is facing up in the
mamual tray and tray.
Clearing paper jams
When a paper jam occurs, paper jam messages appear on the display.
Refer to the table below to locate and clear the paper jam.
If the paper does not move when you pull, or if you do not see the
paper in this area, check the paper exit area. See page 11.2.

configuring Printer or MFP devices. Since an MFP device
combines the printer and scanner, the Unified Linux Driver
Configurator provides options logically grouped for printer and
scanner functions. There is also a special MFP port option
responsible for the regulation of access to an MFP printer and
scanner via a single I/O channel.

Sharing Ports Between Printers and Scanners
Scanners Configuration
In this window, you can monitor the activity of scanner devices,
view a list of installed Samsung MFP devices, change device
properties, and scan images.
Your machine may be connected to a host computer via the
parallel port or USB port. Since the MFP device contains more
than one device (printer and scanner), it is necessary to
organize proper access of “consumer” applications to these
devices via the single I/O port.
The Samsung Unified Linux Driver package provides an
appropriate port sharing mechanism that is used by Samsung
printer and scanner drivers. The drivers address their devices
via so-called MFP ports. The current status of any MFP port can
be viewed via the Ports Configuration. The port sharing
prevents you from accessing one functional block of the MFP
device, while another block is in use.

configuration.
Shows all of the
installed scanners.
When you install a new MFP device onto your system, it is
strongly recommended you do this with the assistance of an
Unified Driver Configurator. In this case you will be asked to
choose I/O port for the new device. This choice will provide the
most suitable configuration for MFP’s functionality. For MFP
scanners I/O ports are being chosen by scanner drivers
automatically, so proper settings are applied by default.
