ONE YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY
For LCD Displays
Congratulations on your purchase of a Runco video product and welcome to the Runco family! We believe Runco produces
“The World’s Finest Home Theater Products.” With proper installation, setup and care, you should enjoy many years of
unparalleled video performance.
This is a LIMITED WARRANTY as defined in the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Please read it carefully and retain it with your
other important documents.
WHAT IS COVERED UNDER THE TERMS OF THIS LIMITED WARRANTY:
SERVICE LABOR: Runco will pay for service labor by a Runco Authorized Service Center when needed as a result of a
manufacturing defect for a period of one (1) year from the effective date of delivery to the end user.
PARTS: Runco will provide new or rebuilt replacement parts for the parts that fail due to defects in materials or workmanship
for a period of one (1) year from the effective date of delivery to the end user. Such replacement parts are then subsequently
warranted for the remaining portion (if any) of the original warranty period.
WHAT IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE TERMS OF THIS LIMITED WARRANTY:
Image retention on LCD display panels is specifically excluded from coverage under this Limited Warranty. Image retention or
staining of an image is the result of misuse of the product and therefore cannot be repaired under the terms of this Limited
Warranty.
Normal viewing material such as television/satellite broadcasts, videotape or DVDs (not put into pause for extended periods of
time) will not cause damage to your display under normal conditions. Many DVD players are also equipped with screen savers
for this reason.
TO AVOID IMAGE RETENTION (Burn-in): Please ensure that still images are not left on your LCD display panel. Also
ensure that images displayed in the 4:3 aspect ratio mode (black or gray stripes, but no picture information is present on the
left and right edges of the screen) are used as infrequently as possible. This will prevent permanent retention on your LCD
display panel, which can be seen permanently under certain conditions once burn-in has occurred.
The types of images to avoid include video games, still images and computer screens with stationary tool bars and icons. (This
is why computers are equipped with screen savers – to prevent still images from burning into the monitor’s phosphors after
being displayed continuously for an extended period of time).
This Limited Warranty only covers failure due to defects in materials and workmanship that occur during normal use and does
not cover normal maintenance. This Limited Warranty does not cover cabinets or any appearance items; failure resulting from
accident, misuse, abuse, neglect, mishandling, misapplication, faulty or improper installation or setup adjustments; improper
maintenance, alteration, improper use of any input signal; damage due to lightning or power line surges, spikes and
brownouts; damage that occurs during shipping or transit; or damage that is attributed to acts of God. In the case of remote
control units, damage resulting from leaking, old, damaged or improper batteries is also excluded from coverage under this
Limited Warranty.
CAUTION: THIS LIMITED WARRANTY ONLY COVERS RUNCO PRODUCTS PURCHASED FROM RUNCO AUTHORIZED
DEALERS. ALL OTHER PRODUCTS ARE SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDED FROM COVERAGE UNDER THIS LIMITED
WARRANTY. MOREOVER, DAMAGE RESULTING DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY FROM IMPROPER INSTALLATION OR SETUP
IS SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDED FROM COVERAGE UNDER THIS LIMITED WARRANTY. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT
INSTALLATION AND SETUP WORK BE PERFORMED ONLY BY AN AUTHORIZED RUNCO DEALER TO PROTECT YOUR
RIGHTS UNDER THIS WARRANTY. THIS WILL ALSO ENSURE THAT YOU ENJOY THE FINE PERFORMANCE OF WHICH
YOUR RUNCO PRODUCT IS CAPABLE WHEN INSTALLED AND CALIBRATED BY RUNCO AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL.

RIGHTS, LIMITS AND EXCLUSIONS:
Runco limits its obligations under any implied warranties under state laws to a period not to exceed the warranty period. There
are no express warranties. Runco also excludes any obligation on its part for incidental or consequential damages related to
the failure of this product to function properly. Some states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, and
some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages. So the above limitations or
exclusions may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights that vary from
state to state.
EFFECTIVE WARRANTY DATE:
This warranty begins on the effective date of delivery to the end user. For your convenience, keep the original bill of sale as
evidence of the purchase date.
IMPORTANT – WARRANTY REGISTRATION:
Please fill out and mail your warranty registration card. It is imperative that Runco knows how to reach you promptly if we
should discover a safety problem or product update for which you must be notified.
CONTACT A RUNCO AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER TO OBTAIN SERVICE:
Repairs made under the terms of this Limited Warranty covering your Runco video product will be performed at the location of
the product, during usual working hours, providing location of product is within normal operating distance from a Runco
Authorized Service Center. In some instances it may be necessary for the product to be returned to the Runco factory for
repairs. If, solely in Runco’s judgment, location of product to be repaired is beyond normal operating distance of the closest
Runco Authorized Service Center, or the repair requires the unit be returned to the Runco factory, it is the owner’s
responsibility to arrange for shipment of the product for repair. These arrangements must be made through the selling Runco
Dealer. If this is not possible, contact Runco directly for a Return Authorization number and shipping instructions. Runco will
return product transportation prepaid in the United States, unless no product defect is discovered. In that instance, shipping
costs will be the responsibility of the owner.

1. Do not mix an old battery with a new one or different types of
batteries.
Note
2. If you will not use the remote control for a long time, remove the
batteries to avoid damage from battery leakage.
• Do not drop the remote control or expose it to moisture or high temperature.
Notes on Remote Control
Operation
• The remote control may malfunction under a fluorescent lamp. If that occurs, move the
LCD display away from the fluorescent lamp.
• Make sure that there is nothing obstructing the infrared beam between the remote
control and the IR receiver on the LCD display.
The signal from the remote control can be reflected by walls or
other surfaces.
Note
• If the effective range of the remote control decreases, or it stops working, replace the
batteries with new ones.
• Ambient conditions may possibly impede the operation of the remote control. If this
happens, point the remote control at the LCD display and repeat the operation.

Proper installation of your Crystal Series LCD Display will ensure the highest possible
picture quality. Whether you are installing the Crystal Series LCD Display temporarily or
permanently, you should take the following into account to ensure that it performs
optimally.
3.3
Installation
Considerations
You can either place the Crystal Series LCD Display on a table or in an entertainment
center, or mount it on a wall.
Wall-Mounting the Crystal
Series LCD Display
If you do decide to wall-mount the Crystal Series LCD Display, ensure that the wall-mount
bracket is installed according to the instructions included with it. The wall must be capable
of supporting a redundant weight factor three (3) times the weight of the display, or be
reinforced.
Runco recommends that this be done by a custom installation specialist.
Use only the Runco-approved wall-mount kit designed for your
display.
Note
In general, minimize or eliminate light sources directed at the display. Contrast ratio in your
images will be noticeably reduced if light directly strikes the display, such as when a shaft
of light from a window or floodlight falls on the image. Images may then appear washed
out and less vibrant.
Ambient Light
Other considerations and tips that can help improve your installation:
Other Considerations
• Keep the ambient temperature constant and below 35°C (95°F). Keep the display away
from heating and/or air conditioning vents. Changes in temperature may cause drifts in
the display circuitry, which may affect performance.
• Keep the Crystal Series LCD Display away from devices that radiate electromagnetic
energy such as motors and transformers. Common sources of these include slide
projectors, speakers, power amplifiers and elevators.

Proceed as follows to connect the Crystal Series LCD Display to your video sources,
external controller(s) – if present – and AC power.
3.4
Connections to the
Crystal Series LCD
Display
When connecting your equipment:
• Turn off all equipment before making any connections.
• Use the correct signal cables for each source.
• Ensure that the cables are securely connected. Tighten the thumbscrews on
connectors that have them.
• Use the left audio input when connecting mono audio sources.
Rear Connector Access
To access the left rear connector panel, push down on the plastic clip holding the cover in
place. Then, pull firmly on the cable access cover to open it.
Connecting the Crystal

video quality because the signal is carried in the digital domain
throughout the entire signal path, from source component output
into the display.
This Crystal Series LCD Display supports the VESA Display Data
Channel (DDC) standard. This standard provides “Plug and Play”
capability; the display and a VESA DDC-compatible computer
communicate their setting requirements, allowing for quick and easy
setup.

The Crystal Series LCD Display has been designed to incorporate setup and calibration
standards established by the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF). The ISF has developed
carefully crafted, industry-recognized standards for optimal video performance and has
implemented a training program for technicians and installers to use these standards to
obtain optimal picture quality from Runco video display devices. Accordingly, Runco
recommends that setup and calibration be performed by an ISF-certified installation
technician.

Although it may be possible to obtain satisfactory picture quality using the naked eye and
regular program material, Runco recommends using the following calibration tools for best
results:
• External test pattern source – Ovation Multimedia, Digital Video Essentials or AVIA test
DVD or equivalent.
• A blue filter (provided with many test DVDs), for color level and tint adjustments.
Connect your test pattern source to the input that you are calibrating and proceed as
follows. Perform the adjustments in the order listed here.
Brightness: On your external test pattern source, select a PLUGE pattern. (PLUGE is an
acronym for “Picture Line-Up Generation Equipment.”) Figure 4-2 shows a typical PLUGE
pattern.

PLUGE patterns vary but generally consist of some combination of black, white and gray
areas against a black background. The example above includes two vertical bars and four
shaded boxes.
Select Brightness from the Picture Adjust menu. Using the left- and right-arrow (
buttons, adjust the brightness so that:
)
• The darkest black bars disappear into the background.
• The dark gray areas are barely visible.
• The lighter gray areas are clearly visible.
• The white areas are a comfortable level of true white.
• The image contains only black, gray and white (no color).
Contrast: On your external test pattern source, select a stepped, gray-bar pattern like the
one shown in Figure 4-3.

Brightness and contrast controls are interactive. A change to one
may require a subtle change to the other in order to achieve the
optimum setting.

appear to be a single shade of blue:
Tint: Tint or “hue” is essentially the ratio of red to green in the color portion of the image.
When tint is decreased, the image appears redder; when it is increased the image
appears greener. To set the tint, select Tint from the Picture Adjust menu. While looking at
the color bar pattern through a blue filter, adjust the tint level until the cyan and magenta
color bars (on either side of the green bar) appear to be a single shade of blue.
Like the brightness and contrast controls, the color and tint controls
are interactive. A change to one may require a subtle change to the
other in order to achieve the optimum setting.

Sharpness: “Sharpness” is the amount of high-frequency detail in the image. To adjust
sharpness, select Sharpness from the Picture Adjust menu and press ENTER. On your
external test pattern source, select a pattern like the one shown in Figure 4-5. Adjust as
needed, looking for white edges around the transitions from black to gray and different
sized lines in the “sweep” patterns at the top and bottom. Lower the sharpness setting to
eliminate them.
Figure 4-5. Typical Test Pattern for Adjusting Sharpness
DNR: To apply Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) to the input signal, select DNR from the
Picture Adjust menu. Noise reduction is useful for clearing up noisy RGB images such as
those from a PC. Adjust as desired using the left- or right-arrow buttons, keeping in mind
that reducing noise (which reduces high frequencies) may also “soften” the image.
MPEG NR: Use the MPEG Filter to reduce or eliminate so-called “mosquito noise” in
MPEG-compressed video signals (digital broadcasts or DVDs). Adjust as needed to
minimize distortion around the edges of moving objects, moving artifacts around edges
and/or blotchy noise patterns superimposed over the objects.
Backlight: The Backlight control changes the apparent brightness of the displayed
image. Its effect is similar to that of a lamp intensity control on a projector.
The Backlight control is disabled when Auto Backlight (described
on page 41) is set to On.
Note
Color Temperature: To adjust the color temperature, select Color Temp. from the
Picture Adjust menu and press ENTER. (Color temperature defines the “color of gray.”)
The choices are 5400K, 6500K, 8500K and Custom. The default setting, 6500K, is
appropriate for most situations. Higher settings produce a “bluer” picture; lower ones
impart a reddish hue to the image.

Gamma: The Gamma control determines how gray shades are displayed between
minimum input (black) and maximum input (white) for all signals. A good gamma setting
helps to optimize blacks and whites while ensuring smooth transitions for the
“in-between” values utilized in other grays.
Unlike brightness and contrast controls, Gamma allows you to lighten or darken the
overall tone of your images without changing the extremes. All images will be more vibrant
while still showing good detail in dark areas.
The default Gamma setting of 2.20 is appropriate for most typical home theater
environments.
Save Settings (not available for RGB input): The Crystal Series LCD Display lets you
save image quality settings for each input and supported resolution to a preset. You can
recall this preset at a later time by simply pressing a button on the remote control or using
the Restore Settings menu command (see below).
You should save changes to any of the following settings to a preset; otherwise they will
be lost when a new input source or resolution is selected:
• Brightness
• Contrast
• Color saturation
• Tint
• Sharpness
• Gamma
• Color temperature and white balance
Restore Settings (not available for RGB input): To recall a preset, choose Restore
Settings from the Picture Adjust menu and select “Custom,” “ISF Day” or “ISF Night.” Or,
use the corresponding buttons on the remote control.
To adjust the Crystal Series LCD Display audio settings, select Audio from the Main Menu
and press ENTER.

Balance: To adjust the left/right speaker balance, select Balance from the Audio Menu
and press ENTER. Use the left- and/or right-arrow buttons to make one channel louder
than the other.
Equalizer: The Crystal Series LCD Display has a five-band graphic equalizer that you can
use to boost or cut certain audio frequencies. To use it, select Equalizer from the Audio
menu and press ENTER. Select one of four equalizer presets – Standard (flat), Music, Film
or Speech – or select Custom to create your own according to taste. The five frequency
bands are 100, 300, 1000, 3000 and 10,000 Hertz (Hz).
Surround: The Crystal Series LCD Display has a “surround sound” mode that simulates a
multi-channel sound system. To use the surround mode, select Surround from the Audio
menu and set it to On.
When Surround is set to On, the graphic equalizer is disabled.

Audio Language: Some digital TV broadcasts provide audio soundtracks in multiple
languages. If you are watching such a program, select Audio Language from the Audio
menu to choose a soundtrack language: English, Français, Español or Português.
Digital Audio Out: The Crystal Series LCD Display can output either two or six channels
of digital audio. Select Dolby Digital if your A/V receiver can decode a Dolby
Digital-encoded, 5.1-channel bitstream. Otherwise, select PCM to have the Crystal Series
LCD Display output PCM-encoded, stereo audio.
TV Speaker: To disable the speakers, select TV Speaker from the Audio menu, set it to

The Crystal Series LCD Display searches all channel frequencies and adds a channel to its
memory when it detects a signal on that channel frequency. (This may take a few
minutes.) If Auto Tuning fails to detect any CATV channels, select HRC or IRC and try
again. (STD, HRC and IRC refer to different sets of frequencies used by cable television
providers. IRC stands for “Incrementally Related Carrier;” HRC stands for “Harmonically
Related Carrier.”)
Add/Erase: If Auto Tuning fails to detect a channel, select Add/Erase from the Channel
menu and press
or
to select it. Then, select Add to add it to the channel list. To
erase the currently-selected channel from the available channel list, select Add/Erase from
the Channel menu, then select Erase.
Favorite Channel: You can specify up to five channels as “favorite” channels that can be
accessed by pressing a single button on the remote, instead of manually entering the channel
number. To do this, select Favorite Channel from the Channel menu and press ENTER.
Use the up- or down-arrow button to select the memory location in which you want to
store the favorite channel. Then, use the left- or right-arrow button to specify the channel

connectors. Input 3 and Input 4 have both Component and Composite video connectors.
To specify which connection type you are using – or to switch from one to the other if
equipment is connected to both – select Input Selection from the Setup menu and press
ENTER.
The default setting for all four AV inputs is Automatic. With this setting, the Crystal Series
LCD Display searches for an active source on both connectors and displays the first one it
detects. If equipment is connected to both, Automatic input selection triggers a switch
when a source component is disconnected or powered off.
Monitor Out: If you have equipment connected to the AV OUT, select Monitor Out from
the Setup menu to route either the main or PIP audio/video signals to that output.

Overscan (not available for RGB input): Overscan pushes the outside edge of the
active picture area of the video signal out beyond the edge of the display area.
Some television programs are produced based on the assumption that older television
sets may not display the outer edges of the broadcast picture area. Overscan effectively
trims away these inactive, outer edges and enlarges the remaining portion of the image to
fill the display area.
Use the on-screen slidebars to set the desired amount of horizontal and vertical overscan,
as well as horizontal and vertical image shift.
These settings only affect 480i source material. For HDTV, DVDs and other video sources,
Overscan is generally not necessary or desirable.
Input Label: You can give each Crystal Series LCD Display input a descriptive name. To
do this, select Input Label from the Setup menu and choose one from the list.
HDMI Audio: If the HDMI source is a PC or other device that does not support audio
output via HDMI, set HDMI Audio to PC.
If the source does support audio output via HDMI, set this option to HDMI to route the
HDMI (digital) audio signal to the speakers when HDMI1 or HDMI2 is selected.
RGB Signal: The RGB input supports both DTV and VESA (computer) resolutions and
signal timings. If the RGB source is a computer, select PC. If it is a DTV set-top box or
other equipment with an RGB output, select Video.
Film Mode: To smooth out moving images from interlaced, standard-definition (SD)
sources, select Film Mode and set it to Automatic.
In most cases, the Crystal Series LCD Display detects the proper “pull-down” rate and
vertical frequency. However, if your source is jittery and/or tearing you may wish to specify
the pull-down rate (2:2 or 3:2) to ensure stable processing for that source.
Auto Backlight: Select Auto Backlight from the Setup menu and set it to On to have the
Crystal Series LCD Display adjust the Backlight setting automatically, according to the
ambient light level in the viewing area.
OSD Timer: Use the
or
button to set the OSD Timer. This timer controls how long
the menus remain on-screen after selecting them. Select from 0 to 60 seconds, in
10-second increments. When you set the OSD to 0, the menus remain on-screen until
you hide them by pressing EXIT.
Auto Off: Set Auto Off to 30, 60 or 120 minutes to have the Crystal Series LCD Display
go into standby mode when no source signal is present for the selected amount of time.
When Auto Off is set to zero (0) minutes (disabled), the Crystal Series LCD Display
remains in normal operating mode, regardless of the presence or absence of an input
sync signal.

The SAP is usually a foreign-language translation. However, it can also be used for other
purposes such as Described Video Services (DVS), which provide descriptive narration of
key visual elements in programs for the benefit of the visually impaired.

6. Serial Communications
To interface the Crystal Series LCD Display with a home theater automation/control
system or a PC running terminal emulation software, connect it to your control system or
PC as shown in Figure 3-11.
6.1
RS-232 Connection
and Port Configuration
Configure the RS-232 controller or PC serial port as follows: no parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop
bit and no flow control. Set the baud rate to match that of the Crystal Series LCD Display
RS-232 port; the default baud rate is 115200.
• Commands are in ASCII format and are not case-sensitive.
• A carriage return is not required after a command.
6.2
Serial Command
Syntax
• When you send a valid command, the Crystal Series LCD Display executes it and
acknowledges it with a right-bracket character (]) followed by the four-digit numeric
code you sent; for example, ]0002.
• When you send an invalid command (one followed by values outside the valid range for
that command), the Crystal Series LCD Display ignores it and returns >MAX or <MIN
instead of the four-digit code.
• When you send an unrecognized/misspelled command, the Crystal Series LCD Display
ignores it and returns -N/A instead of the four-digit code.
Table 6-1 lists the RS-232 command set.

The following serial commands are meant to emulate buttons on the remote control. Each button
has its own serial command, so effectively it is as if you were using the IR remote only you’ll be
doing so via serial commands. These commands provide active OSD responses just like the IR
remote.
Each command begins with [key followed by the four-digit number of the button. No carriage
return is necessary. The response you receive from the unit if the command is valid will be a
right-bracket (]) followed by the four-digit numeric code you sent. (For example, the ‘ON’ com-
mand is [key0015; the response will be ]0015). All commands are in ASCII.
