PREPARATION
CONNECTING TO POWER
You can power your Listener from either an internal battery or AC power.
Using Battery Power
To power the Listener from an internal battery, you need one 9-volt battery (not
supplied). For the best performance and longest life, we recommend Ra-
dioShack alkaline batteries.
Caution:
Always use a fresh battery of the required size and recommended
type.

1. Insert a coin into the slot between the front
and back halves of the case, and twist it
slightly to separate the halves, then lift off the
front case.
2. Snap the battery connector over the battery’s
terminals.
3. Place the battery on top of the foam cushion
inside the front case, then place the back
case over the front case and snap it closed.
When the Listener’s volume drops or the sound
distorts, replace the 9-volt battery.

Caution: If you do not plan to use the Listener for a week or more, or if you plan
to use only an AC adapter, remove the battery. Batteries can leak chemicals
that can destroy electronic parts.
Warning: Dispose of old batteries promptly and properly. Do not burn or bury
them.
Using AC Power
You can power your Listener from standard AC power using a 9-volt AC adapter
(not supplied) and a Size E Adaptaplug.

Cautions:
You must use an AC adapter that supplies at least 9 volts DC
power and delivers at least 300 milliamps. Its center tip must be
set to positive, and its barrel plug must correctly fit the Listener’s
jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could
!
9V DC
damage the Listener or the adapter.
• Always plug the adapter into the Listener before you plug it into the AC out-
let. Always unplug the adapter from the AC outlet before you unplug it from
the Listener.
9V DC
Insert the adapter’s barrel plug into the Listener’s
jack, then plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet.

Note:
Connecting the AC adapter automatically disconnects the internal bat-
tery.
MOUNTING
You can place the Listener on a flat surface, such as a shelf or desk top, or
mount it directly on the wall.
To mount the Listener on the wall, you need two flat-head screws (not supplied)
with heads that fit into the keyhole slots on the back of the Listener.

Note:
To prevent feedback, do not
place the suction cup pickup coil
near the Listener’s speaker.
4. Because telephone designs vary greatly, you
might need to try attaching the pickup coil at dif-
ferent locations on your telephone. Start by
pressing the suction cup against the back of the
handset, opposite the receiver’s earpiece. Then
lift the telephone handset off the cradle.

5. While listening to the dial tone through the Listener’s speaker, move the
suction cup to different locations on the phone. Try the left rear corner of
the phone’s base, as well as around the receiver’s earpiece. Keep moving
the suction cup pickup coil until you find the position that provides the best
sound quality and volume.
