Precautions
1. Region Numbers
For British models
Replacement and mounting of an AC plug on the
power supply cord of this unit should be performed
only by qualified service personnel.
The DVD standard uses region numbers to control
how discs can be played around the world, the
world being divided into six regions. This unit will
only play DVD discs that match its region number,
1
which can be found on its rear panel (e.g.,
).
IMPORTANT
The wires in the mains lead are coloured in accor-
dance with the following code:
2. About this Manual
This manual explains how to use all of this unit’s
functions. Although the DVD standard offers many
special features, not all discs use them all, so
depending on the disc being played, this unit may
not respond to certain functions. See the disc’s
sleeve notes for supported features.
When you attempt to use a DVD feature
that is not available, this logo may appear
onscreen, indicating that the feature is not
supported by the current disc or this unit.
Blue:
Neutral
Brown: Live
As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this
apparatus may not correspond with the coloured
markings identifying the terminals in your plug,
proceed as follows:
The wire which is coloured blue must be connected
to the terminal which is marked with the letter N or
coloured black.
The wire which is coloured brown must be con-
nected to the terminal which is marked with the let-
ter L or coloured red.
3. Recording Copyright
Unless it’s for personal use only, recording copy-
righted material is illegal without the permission of
the copyright holder.
IMPORTANT
4. Power
The plug is fitted with an appropriate fuse. If the
fuse needs to be replaced, the replacement fuse
must approved by ASTA or BSI to BS1362 and
have the same ampere rating as that indicated on
the plug. Check for the ASTA mark or the BSI
mark on the body of the fuse.
IF THE FITTED MOULDED PLUG IS UNSUIT-
ABLE FOR THE SOCKET OUTLET IN YOUR
HOME THEN THE FUSE SHOULD BE
REMOVED AND THE PLUG CUT OFF AND
DISPOSED OF SAFELY. THERE IS A DANGER
OF SEVERE ELECTRICAL SHOCK IF THE
CUT OFF PLUG IS INSERTED INTO ANY 13
AMPERE SOCKET.
WARNING
BEFORE PLUGGING IN THE UNIT FOR THE
FIRST TIME, READ THE FOLLOWING SEC-
TION CAREFULLY.
AC outlet voltages vary from country to country.
Make sure that the voltage in your area meets the
voltage requirements printed on this unit’s rear
panel (e.g., AC 230–240 V, 50 Hz).
Setting the [STANDBY/ON] switch to STANDBY
does not fully shutdown the DV-S155X. If you do
not intend to use the DV-S155X for an extended
period, remove the power cord from the AC outlet.
5. Never Touch this Unit with Wet Hands
Never handle this unit or its power cord while your
hands are wet or damp. If water or any other liquid
gets inside this unit, have it checked by your Onkyo
dealer.
If in any doubt, consult a qualified electrician.
For European Models
6. Installing this Unit
Declaration of Conformity
Install this unit in a well-ventilated location.
Ensure that there’s adequate ventilation all
around this unit, especially if it’s installed in an
audio rack. If the ventilation is inadequate, the
unit may overheat, leading to malfunction.
Do not expose this unit to direct sunlight or heat
sources, because its internal temperature may
rise, shortening the life of the optical pickup.
Avoid damp and dusty places, and places subject
to vibrations from loudspeakers. Never put the
unit on top of, or directly above a loudspeaker.

side or on a sloping surface, because it may cause
a malfunction.
If you install this unit near a TV, radio, or VCR,
the picture and sound quality may be affected. If
this occurs, move this unit away from the TV,
radio, or VCR.
Moisture condensation can occur in the follow-
ing situations:
— The unit is moved from a cold place to a
warm place.
— A heater is turned on, or cold air from an air
conditioner is hitting the unit.
— In the summer, when this unit is moved from
an air conditioned room to a hot and humid
place.
— The unit is used in a humid place.
Do not use this unit when there’s the possibility
of moisture condensation occurring. Doing so
may damage your discs and certain parts inside
this unit.
If condensation does occur, remove all discs and
leave this unit turned on for two to three hours.
By this time, the unit will have warmed up and
any condensation will have evaporated. To
reduce the risk of condensation, keep this unit
connected to a wall outlet.
7. Care
Occasionally, you should dust this unit all over
with a soft cloth. For stubborn stains, use a soft
cloth dampened with a weak solution of mild deter-
gent and water. Dry the unit immediately after-
wards with a clean cloth. Do not use abrasive
cloths, thinners, alcohol, or other chemical sol-
vents, because they may damage the finish or
remove the panel lettering.
8. Handling Notes
If you need to transport this unit, use the original
packaging to pack it how it was when you origi-
nally bought it.
Do not use volatile liquids, such as insect sprays,
near this unit. Do not leave rubber or plastic items
on this unit for a long time, because they may
leave marks on the case.
This unit contains a semiconductor laser system
and is classified as a “CLASS 1 LASER PROD-
UCT”. So, to use this model properly, read this
Instruction Manual carefully. In case of any trou-
ble, please contact the store where you purchased
the unit.
This unit’s top and rear panels may get warm
after prolonged use. This is normal.
When you’ve finished using this unit, remove all
discs and turn off the power.
If you do not use this unit for a long time, it may
not work properly the next time you turn it on, so
be sure to use it occasionally.
To prevent being exposed to the laser beam, do not
try to open the enclosure.
DANGER:
VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE LASER RADIATION
WHEN OPEN AND INTERLOCK FAILED OR
DEFEATED. DO NOT STARE INTO BEAM.
9.To Obtain a Clear Picture
This unit is a high-tech, precision device. If the lens
on the optical pickup, or the disc drive mechanism
becomes dirty or worn, the picture quality may be
affected. To maintain the best picture quality, we
recommend regular inspection and maintenance
(cleaning or worn part replacement) every 1,000
hours of use depending on the operating environ-
ment. Contact your Onkyo dealer for details.
CAUTION:
THIS PRODUCT UTILIZES A LASER. USE OF
CONTROLS OR ADJUSTMENTS OR PERFOR-
MANCE OF PROCEDURES OTHER THAN
THOSE SPECIFIED HEREIN MAY RESULT IN
HAZARDOUS RADIATION EXPOSURE.
10. Moisture Condensation
Moisture condensation may damage this unit.
Read the following carefully:
The label on the right is
applied on the rear panel.
When you take a glass containing a cold drink out-
side on a summer’s day, drops of water, called con-
densation, form on the outside of the glass.
Similarly, moisture may condense on the lens of
the optical pickup, one of the most important parts
inside this unit.
1. This unit is a CLASS 1
LASER PRODUCT
and employs a laser inside the cabinet.
2. To prevent the laser from being exposed, do not
remove the cover. Refer servicing to qualified

1 Detach the battery cover.
2 Insert two size-AA/R6 batteries.
Be sure to match the + and – ends of the batteries with to diagram inside the battery
compartment.
3 Attach the battery cover.
• Do not mix new batteries with old batteries or different kinds of batteries.
• To avoid corrosion, remove the batteries if you do not intend to use the remote controller
for a long time.
• Remove dead batteries immediately to avoid damage from corrosion. If the remote con-
troller does not operate smoothly, replace both batteries at the same time.

• Place the unit away from strong light, such as direct sunlight or inverted fluorescent light,
which can prevent proper operation of the remote controller.
• Using another remote controller of the same type in the same room or using the unit near
equipment that uses infrared rays may cause operational interference.
• Do not put any object (such as a book) on the remote controller. The buttons of the remote
controller may be pressed by mistake, which drains the batteries.
• Make sure the audio rack doors do not have colored glass. Placing the unit behind such
doors may prevent proper remote controller operation.
• If there is an obstacle between the remote controller and the remote control sensor, the
remote controller will not operate.

Connections
Before Making Any Connections
• Read the manuals supplied with your AV components.
• Don’t connect the power cord until you’ve completed and double-checked all audio and video
connections.
Optical Digital Inputs
The DV-S155X’s optical digital inputs have shutter-type covers that open when an optical plug
is inserted and close when it’s removed. Push plugs in all the way.
Caution: To prevent shutter damage, hold the optical plug straight when inserting and remov-
ing.
RCA AV Connection Color Coding
RCA-type AV connections are usually color coded: red, white, and yellow. Use red plugs to
connect right-channel audio inputs and outputs (typically labeled “R”). Use white plugs to con-
nect left-channel audio inputs and outputs (typically labeled “L”). And use yellow plugs to con-
nect composite video inputs and outputs.

Connections—Continued
Connecting your television
Here’s how to connect the DV-S155X to your television so you can view DVD and other
images. The connection method depends on the type of connector you use. Depending on the
connectors that your television has, connect either the component jacks, the S-video jack, or the
composite jack.
If your television has component video input jacks
Use commercially-available component video connection cables to connect the DV-S155X’s
component video output jacks to the component video inputs of your television.

To switch the video output type
If your television supports progressive-scan video, you can use the PROGRESSIVE button on
the DV-S155X or on the remote to switch the video output type. Do this while playback is
stopped.
Progressive (NTSC only):
This is the higher-quality mode that produces a sharper image. Choose this if you’ve connected
a television that supports progressive input. The “PROGRESSIVE” indicator in the display area
will light.
Interlaced (default setting):
Choose this if you’ve connected a television that does not support progressive video input.
Note
• If you choose Progressive when the DV-S155X is connected to a television that doesn’t sup-
port progressive input, the image will not be output correctly. Press the remote’s PROGRES-
SIVE button to turn off progressive mode.
• The image may be garbled when you switch between progressive and interlaced modes.
Regarding the DV-S155X’s compatibility with progressive-scan televisions
At present, some progressive-scan televisions are not completely compatible with the
DV-S155X, and can produce garbled images. If you experience problems when using progres-
sive playback, turn off progressive mode on the DV-S155X and use the progressive function
provided on your television.

PAL Output Setting
With this setting you can specify how the DV-S155X outputs video signals when playing NTSC
format discs.
Auto (default):
Use this option if your TV or projector supports PAL
and NTSC. When you play a PAL disc, the video out-
put will be PAL. When you play an NTSC disc, it’ll
be NTSC. The DV-S155X does not convert the for-
mat.
PAL:
Use this option if your TV doesn’t support NTSC
playback, or the picture is distorted when watching
NTSC discs. The DV-S155X will convert NTSC for-
mat video to a PAL-compatible format known as Mod
PAL or 60 Hz PAL.
Note
This setting can be changed only when playback is stopped.
Audio Settings
Digital Out/Digital1
Digital Out/Digital2
You’ll need to perform this procedure if you’ve connected the DV-S155X to an amp that does
not support digital signals, or to an MD recorder. The signal you specify for Digital Out/
Digital1 will be output from the DIGITAL OPTICAL jack. The signal you specify for Digital
Out/Digital2 will be output from the DIGITAL COAXIAL jack.
• Dolby Digital output
Dolby Digital:
Choose this setting if you’ve connected the
DV-S155X to an AV amp or decoder that sup-
ports Dolby Digital. (This is the default setting.)
Dolby Digital > PCM:
Dolby Digital signals will be converted to linear
PCM signals for output. Choose this setting if
you’ve connected the DV-S155X to an AV amp
that doesn’t support Dolby Digital.
Tip
If you’ve connected the DV-S155X to an MD recorder, choosing the “Dolby Digital > PCM” setting for the
digital jack (Digital 1 or 2) to which the recorder is connected will allow you to convert the Dolby Digital
signal into PCM and record it on your MD recorder.
• MPEG output
MPEG:
Choose this if you’ve connected the DV-S155X to an AV amp that supports MPEG.
MPEG>PCM:
MPEG signals will be converted to linear PCM for output. Choose this if you’ve connected
the DV-S155X to an AV amp that doesn’t support MPEG. (This is the default setting.)

not using the player, we recommend that you
remove the disc.
• If you cannot wipe off the dust with a soft
cloth, wipe the disc lightly with a slightly
moistened soft cloth and finish with a dry
cloth.
• Do not use any type of solvent, such as
thinner, benzene, commercial cleaners or
antistatic spray for vinyl LPs. These sol-
vents may damage discs.
Storing discs
• Do not store discs in locations subject to
direct sunlight or near heat sources.
• Do not store discs in locations subject to
moisture or dust, such as a bathroom or
near a humidifier.
• Store discs in cases. Store each case verti-
cally. Stacking or placing objects directly
on a disc may cause it to warp.

Troubleshooting
Please check the following points first. It is possible that the cause may lie with other connected
equipment, so refer to the Instruction Manual of your other equipment as well.
The numbers shown at the end of a line indicate pages for reference.
Power-related problems
Power does not turn on
Make sure that the power cord has not fallen out of the outlet.
Unplug the power cord from the outlet, wait at least five seconds, and plug it back in again.
Sound-related problems
No sound
Could the power cord have fallen out of the outlet?
Make sure that the connecting cables are firmly connected. (page 13)
Insert RCA-type plugs all the way into the jack.
It is possible that the player is being affected by a strong magnetic field, such as produced by a television.
Move the player away from the television.
About the sound quality
Changing the polarity of the power plug will sometimes improve the sound. The sound quality will
stabilize ten to thirty minutes after the power is turned on. Please note that the sound quality will dete-
riorate if you bundle the audio connection cable together with speaker cables.
Video-related problems
Playback image is occasionally distorted
Check whether the disc is dirty.
The image may be somewhat distorted while searching forward or backward. This is not a malfunction of
the player.
Frozen image is blurred
Use the Operation Setting to adjust the Pause/Still. (page 72)
Brightness of the playback image is unsteady. Or, noise is present in the playback image
If you’ve connected the DV-S155X via a video deck or a television with built-in video recorder, copy-
protection is being applied. Connect the DV-S155X directly to your television.
On some televisions or monitors, the color level may become slightly lighter or the tint may change dur-
ing playback. Also, some discs may produce noise in the image because of their high resolution. In such
cases, adjust your television or monitor to get the optimal picture.
Picture does not appear on the television screen
Make sure that the correct input is selected on the television to which the DV-S155X is connected.
If the same image is displayed for an extended time while the player is stopped or paused, the screen
saver function will operate. In this case, press the
button to defeat the screen saver. Press the button
once again to begin playback. The screen saver will operate even if a television is not connected, such as
when playing a CD.
If you’ve connected the DV-S155X to the component jacks of your television, select the “Interlaced” set-
ting. (page 64)
Picture is stretched vertically or horizontally
The TV Shape setting is not appropriate for your television. Make settings as explained in “Initial setup”
or “Advanced setup.” (pages 23, 64)
Mesh-like noise appears on the television screen
Keep the television antenna cable at a distance from the DV-S155X’s power cord and connection cables.

Problems with disc playback
Disc won’t play
When playing a disc recorded in DTS format, you must connect the digital output jack to a DTS-compat-
ible decoder. If a DTS-compatible decoder is not connected to the digital output jack when you play
back, an extreme level of noise will be output from the DV-S155X’s analog audio output jacks.
Make sure that the disc is a type that the DV-S155X is able to play. (page 74)
Check the region number. (page 3)
If the Parental Lock function is active, defeat it or change the level. (page 72)
There’s a time lag before playback begins
For DVDs and for CDs that contain a large number of songs, a certain amount of time is required for the
disc to be read.
Skips occur in the sound
The sound may skip if the player is subjected to vibration, if the disc has a large scratch, or if the disc is
dirty.
Can’t memorize songs or scenes
Make sure that a disc is inserted in the player, and that the song or scene you are attempting to memorize
is on that disc. Some DVDs prohibit memory operations.
Disc is inserted, but won’t play
Make sure that the correct side of the disc is facing upward.
Make sure that the disc is not badly soiled or scratched.
If you suspect that condensation has occurred, leave the player for approximately one hour before
attempting to operate it. (page 78)
Disc doesn’t play in the correct order
Defeat special playback modes such as Repeat Play, Memory Playback, and Random Playback. (pages
57–59)
The specified language, subtitle, or soundtrack is not output
The disc does not contain the language you specified.
When you play back a DVD or video CD, playback begins from the middle
The Resume function is active. If you want to play the disc from the beginning, press the (Stop) button
twice and then play back.
If you press the
DV-S155X will remember that location. The next time you play back that disc, it will begin playing from
the location at which you pressed the button. A DVD-R/DVD-RW disc will play back from the loca-
tion at which you pressed the button, whether it is the same disc or another DVD-R/DVD-RW disc. If
you want to play the disc from the beginning, press the (Stop) button twice and then play back.
(Open/Close) button to open the tray while a DVD or video CD is playing, the
“Prohibited by the disc” symbol appears on the television screen
The operation you selected is prohibited by the disc. (page 75)
“Prohibited by the player” symbol appears on the television screen
The operation you selected is prohibited by the DV-S155X. (page 75)
Playing a Copy Control music CD
Noise or skips occur during playback / Player fails to recognize disc (“NO DISC” indication) / First
song is not played / Finding the beginning of a song takes longer than normal / Plays from the middle
of a song / Some portions won’t play / Stops mid-way through playback / Indicator display is wrong
The disc you are attempting to play is a music CD with Copy Control technology. Some music CDs with
Copy Control do not comply with the CD specification. These are non-standard discs, and may not be
playable on the DV-S155X.

Problems with MP3/WMA/JPEG playback
Can’t play back a disc that contains MP3/WMA/JPEG files
Make sure that the recorded disc is ISO 9660 compliant. (page 76)
Make sure that the disc containing the files has been finalized.
Can’t select a track (file) recorded on the disc
Files will not be recognized if they have a non-standard filename extension. Change the filename exten-
sion. (page 76)
The DV-S155X cannot recognize more than 999 folders or 671 tracks. (page 76)
The DV-S155X does not support multi-session discs. Only the first session of a multi-session disc will be
played. (page 76)
Problems with the remote control
The remote control doesn’t work
Are the batteries inserted with the correct polarity (+, –) as indicated? (page 12)
Try replacing both batteries with fresh batteries. (Avoid mixing batteries of differing types, or old and
new batteries.)
Could the remote control be too far from the DV-S155X?
Is there an obstruction between the remote control and the DV-S155X?
Is strong light (fluorescent light or direct sunlight) shining on the DV-S155X’s remote control optical
sensor?
If the door of your audio rack is made of colored glass, the remote control may not operate correctly.
Problems with connections to external devices
System functions don’t work with other connected Onkyo products
Make sure that both the
will not work if only the
cable and the audio connection cable are connected correctly. The system
cable is connected. (page 18)
Problems with settings
Your settings have disappeared
Your settings will be lost if there is a power failure or the power cord is disconnected while the player is
powered-on.
Can’t change the settings
Some settings can’t be changed during playback. In this case, stop playback before you change the set-
tings.
Sound is output in monaural
While playing a video CD, the output will be monaural if you pressed the remote control’s AUDIO but-
ton to select Mono L or Mono R. To return to stereo, press the remote control’s AUDIO button once
again to select stereo. (page 27)
* The status of this setting is shown in the video output, so you’ll need to connect a television to check
the current status.

Troubleshooting—Continued
The manufacturer expressly disclaims any responsibility for damages (including but not lim-
ited to CD rental fees) incurred because of your inability to make a satisfactory recording due
to a malfunction of this device. Before making an important recording, you should verify that
recording occurs correctly.
This device contains sophisticated microcomputer functionality that in rare cases may mal-
function due to interference, noise, or static electricity from an external source.
If this occurs, unplug the power cord, wait at least five seconds, and then connect the power
cord once again.
To return DVD-related settings to their default state (the factory settings)

Remove the disc so that the display section indicates “No Disc”
While holding down the (Stop) button, press the STANDBY/ON button
The display will indicate “INITIALIZE” for approximately seven seconds, and will
then indicate “COMPLETE.”
DVD-related settings have now been
set to their default state (the factory
settings).
Glossary
Analog audio
Dolby Digital
An electrical signal that directly represents
sound. Compare this to digital audio which
can be an electrical signal, but is an indirect
representation of sound. See also “Digital
audio”.
Using a maximum of 5.1 channels
of audio, this high quality surround system is
used in many of the finer movie theaters
around the world.
The on-screen display shows which channels
are active, for example showing 3/2.1. The 3
being the two front channels and the center
channel; the 2 being the surround channels,
and the .1 being the LFE channel.
Aspect ratio
The width of a TV screen relative to its
height. Conventional TVs are 4:3 (in other
words, the screen is almost square); wide-
screen models are 16:9 (the screen is almost
twice as wide as it is high).
DRM
DRM (digital rights management) is a type of
server software developed to enable secure
distribution of paid content over the web,
recently incorporated by WMA (Windows
Media Audio).
Digital audio
An indirect representation of sound by num-
bers. During recording, the sound is measured
at discrete intervals (44,100 times a second
for CD audio) by an analog-to-digital con-
verter, generating a stream of numbers.
On playback, a digital-to-analog converter
generates an analog signal based on these
numbers. See also “Sampling frequency” and
“Analog audio”.
DTS
DTS stands for Digital Theater Sys-
tems. DTS is a surround system different
from Dolby Digital that has become a popular
surround sound format for movies.

Glossary—Continued
Dynamic range
mally not watch from beginning to end all at
once—karaoke discs, for example.
The difference between the quietest and loud-
est sounds possible in an audio signal (with-
out distorting or getting lost in noise).
Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks are capa-
ble of a very wide dynamic range, delivering
dramatic cinema-like effects.
PCM (Pulse Code Modulation)
The most common system of encoding digital
audio, found on CDs and DAT. Excellent
quality, but requires a lot of data compared to
formats such as Dolby Digital and MPEG
audio. For compatibility with digital audio
recorders (CD, MD and DAT) and AV ampli-
fiers with digital inputs, this unit can convert
Dolby Digital, DTS and MPEG audio to
PCM. See also “Digital audio”.
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File)
A file format developed by Fuji Photo Film
for digital still cameras. Digital cameras from
various manufacturers use this compressed
file format which carries date, time and
thumbnail information, as well as the picture
data.
Regions (DVD-Video only)
These associate discs and players with partic-
ular areas of the world. This unit will only
play discs that have compatible region codes.
You can find the region code of your unit by
looking on the rear panel. Some discs are
compatible with more than one region (or all
regions).
File extension
A tag added to the end of a filename to indi-
cate the type of file. For example, “.mp3”
indicates an MP3 file.
ISO 9660 format
International standard for the volume and file
structure of CD-ROM discs.
Sampling frequency
The rate at which sound is measured to be
turned into digital audio data. The higher the
rate, the better the sound quality, but the more
digital information is generated. Standard CD
audio has a sampling frequency of 44.1kHz,
which means 44,100 samples (measurements)
per second. See also “Digital audio”.
JPEG
A file format used for still images, such as
photographs and illustrations. JPEG files are
identified by the file extension “.jpg” or
“.JPG”. Most digital cameras use this format.
MP3
MP3 (MPEG1 audio layer 3) is a compressed
audio file format. Files are recognized by
their file extension “.mp3” or “.MP3”.
WMA
WMA is short for Windows Media Audio and
refers to an audio compression technology
developed by Microsoft Corporation. WMA
data can be encoded by using Windows
Media Player version 8 or Windows Media
Player for Windows XP.
MPEG audio
An audio format used on Video CDs and
some DVD discs. This unit can convert
MPEG audio to PCM format for wider com-
patibility with digital recorders and AV
amplifiers. See also “PCM (Pulse Code Mod-
ulation)”.
MPEG video
The video format used for Video CDs and
DVDs. Video CD uses the older MPEG-1
standard, while DVD uses the newer and
much better quality MPEG-2 standard.
PBC (PlayBack Control) (Video CD only)
A system of navigating a Video CD through
on-screen menus recorded onto the disc.
Especially good for discs that you would nor-
