Do not attempt to service, calibrate, or repair this monitor.
Because your UA-787W monitor contains delicate, high-precision parts,
avoid exposing it to extremes in temperature or humidity or to direct
sunlight, shock and dust. Auto Control Medical guarantees the accuracy of
this monitor only when it is stored and used within the temperature and
humidity ranges noted on page E-18.

Clean the monitor and cuff with a dry, soft cloth or a cloth dampened with
water and a mild detergent. Never use alcohol, benzene, thinner or other
harsh chemicals to clean monitor or cuff.
Remove and replace batteries if monitor is not used for more than six
months. Alkaline batteries recommended.

The UA-787W is designed to be used at home, by those who are eighteen (18) years
and older, to monitor blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) and pulse rate.

hOW UA-787W WORKS
LifeSource® blood pressure monitors are easy to use, accurate and digitally display
full measurement readouts. Our technology is based on the “oscillometric meth-
od” – a noninvasive blood pressure determination. The term “oscillation” refers
to any measure of vibrations caused by the arterial pulse. Our monitor examines
the pulsatile pressure generated by the arterial wall as it expands and contracts
against the cuff with each heartbeat.
The cuff is inflated until the artery is fully blocked. The inflation speed is maxi-
mized and the pressure level is optimized by the device. The monitor takes mea-
surements while the cuff is both inflating and deflating. This results in a faster
measurement providing greater comfort to the user.
BEFORE yOU START
You must install 4 type AA (1.5 volt) batteries (alkaline batteries recommended),
or use the AC Adapter (see page E-11 for using the Monitor with AC Adapter)
and attach the cuff to the monitor before using it. To install batteries (or replace
them if the “Low Battery” symbol appears on display), proceed as follows:
1. Remove battery compartment cover by gently pushing down on arrow and
sliding cover forward.
2. Put in bottom row of batteries
first. Place the batteries in com-
partment with positive (+) and
negative (–) terminals matching
those indicated in the compart-
ment. Be sure batteries make con-
tact with compartment terminals.

INSTALLING ThE CUFF hOLDER
This monitor comes equipped with a removable cuff holder for your conve-

nience. When not in use, simply slip your Easy-Fit cuff into the holder for
storage.
To install the cuff holder:
1. Align the cuff holder with the rear of the blood pressure
monitor.
2. Slide the cuff holder into the rear of the blood pressure
monitor until it snaps securely into place.
To remove the cuff holder:
1. Push the tab on the cuff holder away from the blood pres-
sure monitor.
2. Slide the cuff holder away from the blood pressure monitor
as shown.
SELECTING ThE CORRECT CUFF SIZE
Using the right sized cuff is essential for an accurate measurement. Our unique

Easy-Fit cuff is designed to accommodate most arm sizes, from 23-43 cm

(9"-17"). the Easy-Fit cuff is contoured to provide you with a quick and com-
fortable fit. Just slide the cuff onto your upper arm and secure – it’s that simple!
To place the cuff on properly, please read the section Taking Your Blood Pressure
(see pg. E-5).
If your arm circumference is greater than 43 cm (17") or smaller than 23 cm
(9"), you will need to purchase a difference size cuff than the one that is included

Tips for Blood Pressure Monitoring:

Relax for about 5 minutes before measurement.
Do not smoke or ingest caffeine at least 30 minutes prior to measurement.
Remove constricting clothing and place cuff on bare arm.
Unless your physician recommends otherwise, use left arm to measure
pressure.

Do not talk during measurement.
Do not cross legs and keep your feet flat on floor during measurement.
Now you are ready. Follow these simple steps:
1. Sit comfortably with your left
arm resting on a flat surface so
that the center of your upper arm
is at the same height as your heart.

pointing away from you. Then position
the tube off-center toward the inner side
of arm in line with the little finger.

3. secure Easy-Fit cuff around arm. The cuff
should be snug but not too tight. You should
be able to insert two fingers between the cuff
and your arm.

4. Press the START button. The average reading (see Pg. E-9) is displayed, the
cuff pressurizes, measurement will begin and the Cuff Inflation Meter will
show on the display screen. It is normal for the cuff to feel very tight.
NOTE: If an appropriate pressure is not obtained, the device
automatically starts to inflate again.
CAUTION: If you wish to stop inflation at any time, press the START
button again.
5. When the measurement is complete, the systolic and diastolic pressure read-
ings and pulse rate are displayed. The cuff deflates and the monitor automati-
cally shuts off after 60 seconds, or you can turn it off by pressing the START
button. Your measurement is automatically stored in memory (the monitor
can store up to 90 readings in memory).

6. Remove cuff and make note of your blood pressure and pulse rate on the
Blood Pressure Record chart in the back of the manual, indicating the date
and time of measurement.

Measurement with the desired systolic pressure:
If your systolic pressure is expected to exceed 230 mmHg follow these steps:
1. Place the cuff on the left arm, unless your physician tells you otherwise.
2. Press and hold the START button until a number 30 to 40 mmHg higher
than your expected systolic pressure appears.
3. Release the START button when the desired number is reached. 280 mmHg
is the highest pressure level the monitor can reach. Measurement will then
begin. Continue to measure your blood pressure as described on Page E-5.

WhAT IS AN IRREGULAR hEARTBEAT
The UA-787W Blood Pressure Monitor provides a blood pressure and pulse
rate measurement even when an irregular heartbeat is detected. The Irregular
Heartbeat symbol
will appear in the display window in the event an
Irregular Heartbeat has occured during measurement. An irregular heartbeat
is defined as a heartbeat that varies by 25% from the average of all heartbeat
intervals during the blood pressure measurement. It is important that you relax,
remain still and refrain from talking during measurements.
NOTE: We recommend contacting your physician if you see this
frequently.

ABOUT ThE CUFF INFLATION METER
The Cuff Inflation Meter is located on the left side of the display screen to tell
you when the blood pressure monitor is inflating and deflating the cuff. The Cuff
Inflation Meter moves up during inflation and moves down during deflation.

USING ThE MONITOR WITh AC ADAPTER
The UA-787W has an AC adapter jack to allow you to supply power from an
outlet in your home. We recommend you use only the supplied AC adapter to
avoid potential damage to the monitor.
Connecting the AC adapter to the monitor:
1. Gently insert the AC adapter plug into a 120V AC outlet.
2. Connect the AC adapter plug into the jack on the right side of the monitor.
Disconnecting the AC adapter from the monitor:
1. Turn the unit off by pressing the START button.
2. Disconnect the plug from the jack of the monitor quickly.
3. Gently remove the AC adapter from the outlet.

■ What Is Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is the force exerted by blood against the walls of the arteies.
Systolic pressure occurs when the heart contracts; diastolic pressure occurs
when the heart expands. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury
(mmHg).
■ What Affects Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is affected by many factors: age, weight, time of day, activity level,
climate, altitude and season. Certain activities can significantly alter one’s blood
pressure. Walking can raise systolic pressure by 12 mmHg and diastolic pressure
by 5.5 mmHg. Sleeping can decrease systolic blood pressure by as much as 10
mmHg. Taking your blood pressure repeatedly without waiting an interval of 2 -
3 minutes between readings, or without raising your arm to allow blood to flow
back to the heart, can also affect it. In addition to these factors, beverages contain-
ing caffeine or alcohol, certain medications, emotional stress and even tight-fitting
clothes can make a difference in the readings.
■ What Causes variations In Blood Pressure?
An individual’s blood pressure varies greatly from day to day and season to sea-
son. For hypersensitive individuals, these variations are even more pronounced.
Normally, blood pressure rises during work or play and falls to its lowest levels
during sleep.

■ What Is hypertension?
Hypertension (high blood pressure) is the diagnosis given when readings consis-
tently rise above normal. It is well known that hypertension can lead to stroke,
heart attack or other illness if left untreated. Referred to as a “silent killer”
because it does not always produce symptoms that alert you to the problem,
hypertension is treatable when diagnosed early.
■ Can hypertension Be Controlled?
In many individuals, hypertension can be controlled by altering lifestyle and
minimizing stress, and by appropriate medication prescribed and monitored by
your doctor. The American Heart Association recommends the following lifestyle
suggestions to prevent or control hypertension:

Have regular physical checkups.
Reduce salt and fat intake.
Maintain proper weight.
Monitor your blood pressure at periodic intervals.
Exercise routinely.
■ Why Measure Blood Pressure at home?
It is now well known that, for many individuals, blood pressure readings taken in
a doctor’s office or hospital setting might be elevated as a result of apprehension
and anxiety. This response is commonly called “white coat hypertension.” In any
case, self-measurement at home supplements your doctor’s readings and provides
a more accurate, complete blood pressure history. In addition, clinical studies
have shown that the detection and treatment of hypertension is improved when
patients both consult their physicians and monitor their own blood pressure at
home.

■ Answers to Why your Readings Are Different Between
home and at the Doctor’s Office
Your blood pressure readings taken in a doctor’s office or hospital setting may be
elevated as a result of apprehension and anxiety. This response is known as white
coat hypertension.
When I bring my monitor to a doctor’s office, why do I get a different
measurement from my monitor to that taken by a doctor or nurse?
The healthcare professional may be using a different sized cuff. The size of the
bladder inside the cuff is critical for the accuracy of the measurement. This may
give you a different reading. A cuff too large will produce a reading that is lower
than the correct blood pressure; a cuff that is too small will produce a reading
that is higher than the correct blood pressure. There may also be other factors
that can cause the difference in measurements.

■ Establishing Baseline Measurements
The most important method to get an accurate blood pressure measurement
is consistency. To get the most benefit out of your monitor, it is important to
establish a “baseline measurement.” This helps build a foundation of measure-
ments that you can use to compare against future readings. To build this baseline
measurement, devote two weeks for consistent blood pressure monitoring. This
involves doing everything the same way when you measure (e.g. measuring dur-
ing the same time of day, in the same location, sitting in the same chair, using
the same cuff, etc.). Once you establish your baseline measurement, you can
start evaluating if your measurement has been affected based on things lifestyle
changes or medication treatment.
■ how Do I Record My Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure readings are typically recorded with the systolic pressure writ-
ten first, followed by a slash mark and the diastolic pressure. For example, 120
mmHg systolic and 80 mmHg diastolic measurements are written as 120/80.
Pulse is simply written with the letter “P” followed by the pulse rate—P 72, for
example. Please see the back of the manual for the blood pressure tracking log.

COMMENT FONCTIONNE LE UA-787W
Les tensiomètres LifeSource® sont facile à utiliser, précis et avec affichage
numérique de la mesure. Notre technologie est basée sur la méthode oscillomé-
trique, une méthode non invasive pour déterminer la tension artérielle. Le terme
« oscillation » se réfère à toute mesure de vibration causée par le pouls artériel.
Notre tensiomètre étudie la pression du pouls générée par le mur de l'artère pen-
dant que celle-ci prends de l'expansion et se contracte sur le brassard avec chaque
battement du coeur.
Le brassard est gonflé jusqu'à ce que l'artère est complètement bloquée. La vitesse
du gonflage est portée au maximum et le niveau de la pression est optimisé par
l'appareil. Les mesures sont prises par le moniteur pendant que le brassard se
gonfle et se dégonfle. Le résultat en est une mesure plus rapide qui fournit plus
de confort à l'utilisateur.
PRÉPARATIFS
Insérer 4 piles AA (1,5 volts) (les piles alcalines sont recommandées) ou utiliser
l’adaptateur c.a. (voir p. F-11 pour des renseignements sur l’utilisation d’un
adaptateur c.a. avec le moniteur) et attacher le brassard au tensiomètre avant de
l’utiliser. Pour installer les piles (ou
les remplacer si le symbole des «piles
faibles» apparaît à l'écran), veuillez pro-
céder comme suit:

3. Replacer le couvercle en le glissant dans le compartiment et en y appuyant
doucement.
À NOTER : Les piles rechargeables ne fonctionneront pas avec votre moniteur.

Ce tensiomètre est muni d’un support amovible commode pour le brassard.

lorsqu’il n’est pas utilisé, placez le brassard EasyFit dans le support pour
l’entretenir.
Pour installer le support pour le brassard :
1. Alignez le support avec la partie arrière du tensiomètre.
2. Glissez le support dans la partie arrière du tensiomètre
jusqu’à ce qu’il rentre à sa place.
Pour retirer le support pour le brassard :
1. Repoussez l’onglet sur le support.
2. Glissez le support pour le retirer du tensiomètre tel que
démontré.
SÉLECTIONNER LE BRASSARD DE GRANDEUR
APPROPRIÉE
Utiliser un brassard de grandeur appropriée est essentiel pour obtenir des mesures

précises. Notre brassard unique Easy-Fit est conçu pour accommoder plusieurs
grandeurs de bras, mesurant entre 23 et 43 cm (9 po et 17 po). Le brassard

Easy-Fit est courbé pour un ajustement rapide et confortable. Vous n’avez qu’à
enfiler le brassard à votre avant-bras et l’attacher fermement – il est aussi simple
que ça ! Pour l’emplacement exact du brassard, veuillez lire la section « Prendre sa
pression » (voir page F-5).
Si la circonférence de votre bras est supérieure à 43 cm (17 po) ou inférieure à 23
cm (9 po), vous allez devoir acheter un brassard de grandeur différente que celui

Indices pour des mesures bien précises

Vous détendre environ 5 minutes avant la mesure.

Ne pas fumer ni consommer de la caféine au moins 30 minutes avant la
mesure.

Enlever tout vêtement trop ajusté et placer le brassard sur votre bras.
À moins d’une restriction de votre médecin, nous vous recommandons
d’utiliser votre bras gauche pour prendre la mesure.

Ne pas parler pendant la mesure.
Ne pas croiser les jambes et garder les pieds à plat sur le plancher pendant
la mesure.
Vous êtes maintenant prêt. Suivez les étapes suivantes :

4. Appuyer sur la touche de mise en marche « START ». La mesure moyenne de
la tension artérielle (voir page F-9) est affichée, le brassard gonfle, la mesure
commence et l’indicateur de gonflage du brassard apparaîtra à l’écran. Il est
normal de sentir le brassard très serré.
À NOTER : Si une tension artérielle appropriée n’est pas obtenue, la pressurisation
recommence automatiquement.
AvERTISSEMENT : vous pouvez cesser la pressurisation en tout temps en appuyant
sur la touche de mise en marche « START ».
5. Lorsque la prise de la tension est terminée, la tension systolique et diastolique
et le pouls apparaissent à l'écran. Le brassard se dégonfle et le moniteur
s'éteint automatique après 60 secondes, ou vous pouvez l'éteindre vous-même
en appuyant sur la touche de mise en marche « START ». Votre mesure est
automatiquement enregistrée dans la mémoire (l’appareil peut enregistrer

6. Enlever le brassard et inscrire le résultat de la tension artérielle et du pouls
dans le journal de la tension artérielle à l’arrière du manuel, en indiquant la
date et l'heure de la mesure.
IMPORTANT : Mesurer sa pression à environ la même heure tous les jours.

PRENDRE SA PRESSION
Mesure avec la tension systolique désirée :
Si votre tension systolique habituelle est supérieure à 230 mm de mercure, suivez
les étapes suivantes :
1. Placer le brassard sur votre bras gauche, à moins d’une restriction de votre
médecin.
2. Appuyer et tenir enfoncée la touche de mise en marche « START » jusqu’à
ce que la tension systolique atteigne un niveau supérieur à votre tension sys-
tolique habituelle de 30 à 40 mm de mercure.
3. Relâcher la touche de mise en marche « START » quand le chiffre désiré est
atteint. 280 mmHg est le plus haut niveau de pression que cet appareil peut
atteindre. La mesure commencera à ce moment-là. Continuer à mesurer la
tension artérielle, tel que décrit à la page F-5.

QU'EST-CE UN RyThME CARDIAQUE IRRÉGULIER
Le tensiomètre UA-787W fournit une lecture de la tension artérielle et du pouls
même lorsqu'un rythme cardiaque irrégulier a lieu. Le symbole du battement
irrégulier du coeur
apparaîtra dans l’écran d’affichage si un battement
irrégulier du coeur a eu lieu pendant la mesure. Un rythme cardiaque irrégulier
est défini comme étant un rythme cardiaque qui varie de 25 % par rapport à la
moyenne de tous les rythmes cardiaques pendant la mesure de la tension artéri-
elle. Il est important que vous soyiez relaxé et que vous restiez calme sans bouger
pendant la mesure.

INDICATEUR DE GONFLAGE DU BRASSARD
L’indicateur de gonflage du brassard est situé sur le côté gauche de l’écran
d’affichage et vous montre quand l’appareil gonfle et dégonfle le brassard.
L’indicateur de gonflage du brassard monte pendant le gonflage et descend pen-
dant le dégonflage.

Le UA-787W comprend une prise pour un adaptateur c.a. vous permettant de
faire fonctionner l’appareil à partir d’une prise d’alimentation dans votre maison.
Nous vous recommandons de n’utiliser que l’adaptateur c.a. fourni, afin d’éviter
des dommages potentiels au tensiomètre.
Comment connecter l’adaptateur c.a. au moniteur :
1. Insérer doucement la fiche de l’adaptateur c.a. dans une prise d’alimentation
120V.
2. Insérer la fiche de l’adaptateur c.a. dans la prise se trouvant sur le côté droit du
moniteur.
Comment déconnecter l’adaptateur c.a. du moniteur :
1. Désactiver l’appareil en appuyant sur la touche de mise en marche « START ».
2. Débrancher rapidement la fiche de la prise du tensiomètre.
3. Retirer doucement l'adaptateur c.a. de la prise d’alimentation au mur.

■ La tension artérielle, c’est quoi ?
On appelle tension artérielle la pression du sang sur la paroi des artères. La con-
traction du coeur est dite systolique. La dilatation du coeur est dite diastolique.
La tension artérielle est mesurée en millimètres de mercure (mmHg).
■ Qu’est-ce qui influence la tension artérielle ?
La tension artérielle peut varier suite à plusieurs facteurs dont l’âge, le poids,
l’heure du jour, le niveau d’activité, le climat, l’altitude et la saison. Certaines
activités peuvent affecter votre tension d’une façon significative. Marcher peut
augmenter la tension systolique de 12 mm de mercure et la tension diastolique
de 5,5 mm de mercure. Dormir peut diminuer la tension systolique de jusqu’à
10 mm de mercure. Prendre sa tension de façon répétitive sans attendre 5 min-
utes entre lectures ou sans lever le bras pour ramener le sang au coeur, peuvent
également l’affecter.
En plus de ces facteurs, les breuvages à teneur en caféine ou alcool, certains
médicaments, un excès de tension nerveuse, et même des vêtements trop serrés
peuvent influencer l’exactitude des résultats.
■ Qu’est-ce qui cause les fluctuations des lectures ?
La tension artérielle d’une personne varie énormément d’un jour à l’autre et
d’une saison à l’autre. Dans les patients hypertensifs, ces fluctuations sont encore
plus prononcées. Normalement, la tension artérielle augmente pendant le travail
et diminue à des niveaux très bas pendant le sommeil.

■ Évaluation d'une tension artérielle élevée
Les critères suivants pour l'évaluation d'une tension artérielle élevée chez les adul-
tes (sans égard pour âge ou sexe) ont été établis comme directives. Remarquez
bien que d’autres facteurs de risque (ex : diabète, obésité, fumer etc) devraient
être considérés et pourraient affecter ces chiffres. S.v.p. consulter votre médecin

■ Qu’est-ce que l’hypertension ?
L’hypertension (haute pression) est le diagnostic lorsque les mesures sont con-
stamment au-dessus de la normale. Il est très bien reconnu que l’hypertension
peut occasionner des risques tels congestion cérébrale, crise cardiaque ou autres
maladies si non traitée. Souvent appelée « le tueur silencieux », parce qu’elle
ne produit souvent pas de symptômes pour nous sensibiliser au problème,
l’hypertension se traite lorsque diagnostiquée tôt.
■ Est-ce qu’on peut contrôler l’hypertension ?
Dans plusieurs personnes, un contrôle est possible en changeant son style de vie,
en évitant le stress et à l’aide de médicaments prescrits par et sous la surveillance
d’un médecin. Pour prévenir ou contrôler l’hypertension, la Fondation des mala-
dies du coeur nous donne les conseils suivants :

Ne pas fumer.

Subir régulièrement des examens médicaux.

Réduire la consommation de sel et de gras.
Surveiller son poids.
Surveiller sa tension artérielle à intervalles périodiques.
Faire de l’exercice physique régulièrement.
■ Pourquoi mesurer sa tension artérielle à la maison ?
Il est bien reconnu que, pour plusieurs personnes, les prises de pression dans le
bureau du médecin ou à l’hôpital peuvent rendre le patient inquiet et nerveux et
faire monter sa pression. On appelle ceci «l’effet sarrau blanc». Les mesures prises
à la maison complètent le suivi du médecin et procurent une analyse plus exacte
de la tension artérielle. De plus, des études en clinique ont démontré qu’à la
maison, les prises de tension effectuées sur une base régulière en consultation avec
son médecin, révèlent une amélioration au niveau du décèlement et du traitement
de l’hypertension.

■ Raisons pour lesquelles vos lectures varient entre celles
obtenues à la maison et celles obtenues au bureau du
médecin
Les prises de pression dans le bureau du médecin ou à l’hôpital peuvent rendre le
patient nerveux et faire monter sa pression. On appelle ceci l’effet sarrau blanc.
Pourquoi, lorsque j’amène mon tensiomètre avec moi au bureau de
mon médecin, les lectures prises avec mon appareil comparées à celles
prises par mon médecin ou infirmière sont-elles différentes ?
Il se peut que le professionnel de la santé utilise un appareil et/ou un brassard dif-
férent. Ceci peut entraîner une lecture différente. Un brassard qui est trop grand
produira une mesure plus basse que la normale; un brassard qui est trop petit
produira une mesure plus haute que la normale. D’autres facteurs peuvent aussi
affecter la variance entre les mesures.
■ Conseils pour la surveillance réussie de la tension
artérielle :
La tension artérielle d’une personne varie durant la journée. Nous vous recom-
mandons d’être consistant dans votre routine quotidienne de mesurer votre ten-
sion artérielle.

Mesurer sa pression à la même heure tous les jours.
S’asseoir dans la même chaise/position.
Ne pas croiser les jambes et garder les pieds à plat sur le plancher pendant
la mesure.

Se détendre pendant 5 minutes avant la mesure.
Utiliser la grandeur de brassard appropriée pour obtenir une lecture
précise.

Rester calme sans bouger – ne pas parler, manger ni faire des mouve-
ments soudains.
Inscrire la mesure dans le journal de la tension artérielle.

■ Établissement des mesures de base
La méthode la plus importante pour obtenir une mesure précise de la tension
artérielle est la cohérence. Pour bénéficier entièrement de votre tensiomètre, il est
important d’établir une « mesure de base ». Ceci aide à bâtir des bases de mesures
que vous pouvez utiliser pour comparer à vos lectures futures. Pour bâtir cette
mesure de base, il faut consacrer deux semaines afin de surveiller d’une manière
consistante sa tension artérielle. Ceci signifie qu’il faut tout faire de la même
façon pendant la mesure (ex : mesurer à la même heure tous les jours, au même
endroit, en s’asseyant sur la même chaise, en utilisant le même brassard, etc). Une
fois la mesure de base établie, vous pouvez commencer à évaluer si votre mesure a
été affectée par des facteurs tels que les changements de mode de vie ou les traite-
ments de médicaments.
■ Comment inscrire son résultat ?
On inscrit en premier lieu la tension systolique suivie d’une barre oblique et de la
tension diastolique. Par exemple, une tension systolique de 120 mm de mercure
et diastolique de 80 mm de mercure s’écrivent 120/80. On inscrit le pouls avec
la lettre «P» suivie de la fréquence des pulsations, soit P72, par exemple. Vous
référer à l’arrière du manuel pour le journal de la tension artérielle.
