Information About Carbon Monoxide   WARNING: This product is intended for use in ordinary indoor   locations of family living units. It is not designed to measure com-   pliance w ith Occupational Safety and Health Administration   (OSHA), commercial or industrial standards. It is not suitable for   installation in hazardous locations as defined in the National   Electric Code.   Ge n e ra l Ca rb o n Mo n o xid e In fo rm a t io n   Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless and tasteless poison gas that   can be fatal when inhaled. CO inhibits the blood’s capacity to carry oxy-   gen.   Periodically review this alarm manual and discuss your CO alarm emer-   gency procedure with all the members of your family. Never ignore a CO   alarm. A true alarm is an indication of potentially dangerous levels of   CO. CO alarms are designed to alert you to the presence of CO before   an emergency – before most people would experience symptoms of CO   poisoning, giving you time to resolve the problem calmly.   The installation of this device should not be used as a substitute   for proper installation, use and maintenance of fuel burning   appliances, including appropriate ventilation and exhaust sys-   tems. It does not prevent CO from occurring, nor can it solve an   existing CO problem.   Determine if anyone in the household is experiencing symptoms of CO   poisoning. Many cases of reported CO poisoning indicate that while   victims are aware they are not well, they become so disoriented they are   unable to save themselves by either exiting the building or calling for   assistance. Also, young children and household pets may be the first   affected. You should take extra precautions to protect high-risk persons   from CO exposure because they may experience ill effects from CO at   levels that would not ordinarily affect a healthy adult.   WARNING: This device is designed to protect individuals from   acute effects of carbon monoxide exposure. It may not fully safe-   guard individuals w ith specific medical conditions. If in doubt,   consult a medical practitioner.   Individuals w ith medical problems may consider using w arning   devices w hich provide audible and visual signals for carbon   monoxide concentrations under 30 PPM.   This carbon monoxide alarm requires a continuous supply of elec-   trical pow er – it w ill not w ork w ithout pow er. Models w ithout   battery backup w ill not operate during pow er failure.   Sym p t o m s o f CO Po iso n in g   The following common symptoms are related to CO poisoning and   should be discussed with ALL members of the household.   This alarm has not been investigated for carbon monoxide detec-   tion below 70 PPM.   Mild Exposure:   Slight headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue (often described as   “flu-like” symptoms).   Medium Exposure:   Severe throbbing headache, drowsiness, confusion, fast heart rate.   Contents of This User’s Guide   1. Learn the difference between dan-   gerous, high, mid and low levels.   • Vehicles and other combustion engines running in an open or closed   garage, attached or near a home.   • Burning charcoal or fuel in grills and hibachis in an enclosed area.   Co n d it io n s Th a t Ca n Pro d u ce Ca rb o n Mo n o xid e   The following conditions can result in transient CO situations:   Dangerous Levels:   When someone is experiencing symptoms of CO poisoning and CO   readings are generally above 100 PPM. Anytime someone is experiencing   the symptoms of CO poisoning this should be treated as an emergency.   See “What to do When the Alarm Sounds” (inside front cover).   • Excessive spillage or reverse venting of fuel-burning appliances caused   by outdoor ambient conditions, such as, wind direction and/or veloci-   ty, including high gusts of wind, heavy air in the vent pipes   (cold/humid air with extended periods between cycles).   High Levels:   Generally above 100 PPM, with no one experiencing symptoms. This   should be treated as an urgent situation. See “What to do When the   Alarm Sounds” (inside front cover).   • Negative pressure resulting from the use of exhaust fans.   • Simultaneous operation of several fuel-burning appliances competing   for limited internal air.   Mid Levels:   Generally between 50 PPM to 100 PPM. This should be cause for   concern and should not be ignored or dismissed. See “What to do   When the Alarm Sounds” (inside front cover).   • Vent pipe connections vibrating loose from clothes dryers, furnaces, or   water heaters.   Low Levels:   • Obstructions in, or unconventional, vent pipe designs which can   amplify the above situations.   Generally below 50 PPM. Kidde recommends you take action to   eliminate the source of CO. See “What to do When the Alarm Sounds”   (inside front cover).   • Extended operation of unvented fuel-burning devices (range, oven,   fireplace, etc.).   IMPORTANT: If the alarm sounds, it should be treated as a poten-   tially serious condition. See “What to do When the Alarm Sounds”   (inside front cover).   • Temperature inversions which can trap exhaust gases near the ground.   • Vehicle idling in an open or closed garage, or near a home.   Po ssib le So u rce s o f Ca rb o n Mo n o xid e   To be safe, know the possible sources of CO in your home. Keep fuel-   burning appliances and their chimneys and vents in good working condi-   tion. Learn the early symptoms of exposure, and if you suspect CO poi-   soning, move outside to fresh air and get emergency help. Your first line   of defense is an annual inspection and regular maintenance of your   appliances. Contact a licensed contractor or call your local utility compa-   ny for assistance.   Inside your home, appliances used for heating and cooking are the most   likely sources of CO. Vehicles running in attached garages can also   produce dangerous levels of CO.   CO can be produced when burning any fossil fuel, such as gasoline,   propane, natural gas, oil and wood. It can be produced by any fuel-   burning appliance that is malfunctioning, improperly installed, or not   ventilated correctly, such as:   In fo rm a t io n Ab o u t Ca rb o n Mo n o xid e Ala rm s –   Wh a t Th e y Ca n a n d Ca n n o t Do :   • Automobiles, furnaces, gas ranges/stoves, gas clothes dryers, water   heaters, portable fuel burning space heaters and generators,   fireplaces, wood-burning stoves and certain swimming pool heaters.   CO alarms provide early warning of the presence of CO, usually before a   healthy adult would experience symptoms. This early warning is possible,   however, only if your CO alarm is located, installed and maintained as   described in this guide.   • Blocked chimneys or flues, back drafts and changes in air pressure,   corroded or disconnected vent pipes, loose or cracked furnace   Because carbon monoxide is a cumulative poison, long-term exposures   Download from Www.Somanuals.com. This Kidde unit has a time-weighted alarm – the higher the   level of CO present, the sooner the alarm will be triggered.   Model KN-COPF-i   This CO alarm can only warn you of the presence of CO. It does not   prevent CO from occurring, nor can it solve an existing CO problem. If   your unit has alarmed and you’ve provided ventilation by leaving your   windows and doors open, the CO buildup may have dissipated by the   time help responds. Although your problem may appear to be   temporarily solved, it’s crucial that the source of the CO is determined   and that the appropriate repairs are made.   Digital   Display   Green LED   Red LED   This CO alarm is designed to act as a monitor; it is not designed for use   as a short-term testing device to perform a quick check for the presence   of CO.   Amber LED   Test/Reset   Button   Peak Level   Button   CO alarms have limitations. Like any other electronic device, CO alarms   are not fool-proof. CO alarms have a limited operational life. You must   test your CO alarm weekly, because it could fail to operate at any time.   If your CO alarm fails to test properly, or if its self-diagnostic test reveals   a malfunction, immediately have the unit replaced. This alarm will not   monitor CO levels while in an error condition.   CO alarms can only sense CO that reaches the unit’s sensor. It’s possible   that CO may be present in other areas without reaching the alarm. The   rate and ability by which CO reaches the alarm may be affected by:   Alarm   Sounder   • Doors or other obstructions.   • Fresh air from a vent, an open window or other source.   IMPORTANT: Seven (7) years after the initial pow er up, this alarm   w ill “beep” every 30 seconds and display "End" to indicate that it   is time to replace the alarm. Replace the alarm immediately! It   w ill not detect CO in this condition. See Maintenance Section for   more information regarding End of Life Notification.   • CO being present on one level of the home and not reaching a CO   alarm installed on a different level. (For example, CO in the basement   may not reach an alarm on the second level, near the bedrooms).   For these reasons, we recommend you provide complete coverage by   placing a CO alarm on every level of the home. Please carefully read all   information in sections 2 and 3 on properly installing this CO alarm.   To help identify the date to replace the alarm, a label has been affixed to   the inside of the cover. Write the “replace by” date (seven years from   power up) in a permanent marker on this label.   CO alarms cannot be used to detect the presence of natural gas   (methane), propane, butane, or other combustible fuels.   Instruct children never to touch, unplug or otherwise interfere with the   alarm. Within several   seconds the unit will return to monitor for CO.   DO NOT USE THE ALARM IF THE LABEL HAS BEEN PUNCTURED!   Maintenance Tips   If interconnected to Kidde smoke alarms, pressing the Test/Reset button   on the CO alarm will have no effect on the smoke alarms. The smoke   alarms will not be tested and will not alarm. However, when pressing   the Test button on an interconnected smoke alarm, the CO alarm will   emit a Smoke/Fire audible and visual alarm pattern of 3 long beeps, 1   second of silence, repeated. NOTE: You do not need to press the Test   button to take a CO reading.   To keep your alarm in good working order, you must follow these simple   steps:   • Test the alarm once a week by pressing the Test/Reset button.   • Vacuum the alarm cover once a month to remove accumulated dust.   • Never use detergents or solvents to clean the alarm. Chemicals can   permanently damage or temporarily contaminate the sensor.   Ba t t e ry Ba cku p   This CO alarm is not battery operated. However, the alarm is equipped   with a rechargeable battery to supply short term back-up during a   power outage.   • Avoid spraying air fresheners, hair spray, paint or other aerosols near   the alarm.   • Do not paint the unit. Paint will seal the vents and interfere with   proper sensor operation.   IMPORTANT: Constant exposures to high or low humidity may   reduce the life of your battery and alarm.   Move the CO alarm to a remote location, to prevent possible damage or   contamination of the sensor, prior to performing any of the following:   End of Life Notification   Seven (7) years after unit is first powered, this alarm will “beep” every   30 seconds and display "End" to indicate that it is time to replace the   alarm (see Alarm Removal section for instructions). By pressing the   Test/Reset button the audible notification will be silenced for up to two   days giving you time to replace the unit at a more convenient time. The   display will alternate between the the CO ppm reading and "End" to   remind you to replace the unit right away. This silence feature can only   be used for a few days before it will no longer function and the beep   cannot be silenced. The alarm will still monitor and alarm for CO during   this period but all other functionality will be lost.   • Staining or stripping floors or furniture, painting or wall-papering   • Using aerosols or adhesives   WARNING: Reinstall the CO alarm as soon as possible to assure continu-   ous protection.   The following is a list of substances that at high levels can damage the   sensor or cause temporary readings that are not CO readings:   • Ethylene, ethanol, alcohol, iso-propanol, benzene, toluene, ethyl   acetate, hydrogen, hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide.   Once AC power has been removed from unit after reaching its end of   service life, the battery will discharge itself to render the unit safe for   disposal.   • Also most aerosol sprays, alcohol based products, paint, thinner, sol-   vent, adhesive, hair spray, aftershave, perfume, auto exhaust (cold   start) and some cleaning agents.   Download from Www.Somanuals.com.
